CAPTAINS CORNER

Hello fishermen! It has been a while since my last fishing report/newsletter. I have no excuses, but can only say it has been a whirlwind the past few months. This winter has been warmer than most winters of the past, so we've had to target fish we don't generally see in the winter months. We did have some wonderful sailfishing in December and early January. In fact, we had a couple of days in which we had double digit numbers of sailfish while running showers and casting ballyhoo on light spinning outfits. However, since mid January, the strong cold fronts have quit arriving and the ballyhoo showers have definitely slowed down. Luckily, the bottom fishing has been red hot for the past month. With the warmer than normal water temperature, there have been a large amount of snappers to target. The winter months are usually not a good time of year to go after yellowtail snapper, but fisherman have been doing very well targeting them. There have been quality size fish up and down the reef line. The best conditions have been to find off color or muddy water with current and wind working together. We generally like using a light spinning outfit with 12lb line and a trace of fluorocarbon leader to help trick the smarter fish. Our go-to hook is an Owner style number 2 mutu light circle hook or a small yellow jig. Shrimp are also the bait of choice during the winter months. In the winter on the Contagious, we like to target the deeper water snappers like yellow eye, vermillion, and mutton snapper. The past two months has produced some great catches for us. We've had lots of days with 3-5 lb vermillion snapper and yellow eyes. This is also one of the first winters that I've seen an increase in the number of trigger fish and nice mutton snappers in the deeper water. There have been days when the trigger fish are so aggressive that you can't catch the snappers as well as normal. Luckily, the trigger fish are just as good to eat, even though they can dull a knife quickly. Some of the wrecks where we've been catching snappers have had a good number of large amberjacks move in. It has been quite common to be reeling up a nice snapper and have it eaten by an amberjack on the way to the boat. Then you're in for a battle! Lots of fisherman have nick-named amberjacks a "sea donkey" because they kick your a** ! This time of year is one of my favorite time of year to target cobia. Unfortunately, the cobia just haven't showed up in good numbers yet

this year. Hopefully they are just a little behind schedule. There are lots of opinions, but I think its just a phase. When the water gets just right and the large stingrays show back up, the cobia will be right behind. One fish that I have never really targeted in February are the large blackfin tuna on the humps. The last three weeks have produced phenomenal tuna fishing when you can get a well full of live pilchards. The hardest part is catching the bait. A week ago, we managed to have two live wells full of pilchards, so we made the run to the hump. The run paid off with some giant blackfin tuna all ranging from 20 to 28 lbs. Springtime is just around the corner, so we should start to see more and more dolphin traveling through our waters. The key to finding early season dolphin is to find the frigate birds as well as finding a magical piece of debris. The springtime also produces current edges that will have cobia and sailfish migrating and tailing along the color changes, which are formed from the strong gulfstream currents that tuck in close to the reef line. The best baits to use are pilchards and cigar minnows during this condition. Hopefully, my new boat, a 34ft Freeman, will be up and running in the next few weeks. We are finishing up the final touches on the tower and electronics. Warbird Fishing Gear was nice enough to put a beautiful wrap on it. It's going to be quite a fishing machine, so hurry up and book a trip to get out on the water. We still have a few openings later in the summer as well as the fall. The 33ft World Cat is also for sale. it has been a great boat. I know whoever buys it is going to love the stability that it offers. It is equipped with the best Garmin electronics money can buy. E-mail me or call my cell phone if you know anyone interested in buying it. The summer of 2017 will once again offer me the opportunity to work with the young fisherman of the Clearwater Adventures Camps. The camps will begin on June 11th and will operate through the first week of August. The camps continue to grow and change each year. This ensures that the experiences each summer get better and better. Here is the line up for the 2017 camps:

Offshore – Two days with myself aboard my new boat, a great adventure for mahi and tuna. Backcountry – Captain Jeremy Chavez targeting tarpon and snook. Bridge Fishing – Tarpon and shark with Captain T.J. Zinkand. Reef and Wreck Fishing – Landing snapper, grouper, and barracuda, plus other species, is the goal of Captain Brian McCadie. Snorkeling – Captain Samantha Zeher takes the campers to the underwater

world of the Keys – an unforgettable adventure. We have a great brochure. Please call myself , or David Todd at 830-562-3354 or 512-217-1587 and we will get a 2017 brochure to you. Catch'em up! Capt. Brian Cone (305) 481-7689 Visit us at www.islamoradafishing.com or Conetagiousfishing on Instagram
