IFC PRESIDENT's WELCOMEDear newly accepted Longhorn,

On behalf of the Interfraternity Council (IFC), it is my absolute pleasure to welcome you to one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the country. Top-of-the-chart rankings, strong academic programs, diverse learning communities, and Longhorn sports are some of the many reasons that students choose to attend the University of Texas at Austin. My personal favorite is our rich history of traditions with one of the finest being the excellence found within the Sorority and Fraternity community here on the Forty Acres. Many Texas Greeks have distinguished themselves as being among some of the most active and successful student leaders on campus.

Texas IFC is a community that ignites the spirit of the university as a whole but what is in it for you? The bonds of brotherhood can be stronger than any other kind of relationship. High scholastic expectations will guide you through your undergraduate career, particularly as you make the transition into college. Thousands of service hours and dollars are donated to philanthropic and community causes each year. Fraternities participate in a wide variety of sporting, academic, and social events. Fraternities also provide an excellent avenue for involvement on campus as well as opportunities to develop your leadership skills.

Fraternity life at UT Austin is also unique compared to some other universities. One example is the fact that we do not have formal recruitment. Our informal recruitment process gives potential new members full flexibility to choose a place that is right for you! “The Gentleman’s Guide to Recruitment,” prepared by the IFC, serves as a perfect tool for you to begin assessing and gathering more information about all 26 IFC fraternities. I strongly encourage you to choose intelligently, as this is a decision that will last a lifetime!

Once again, congratulations on your acceptance to the University of Texas at Austin. It is, indeed, quite an accomplishment! We love to celebrate our many traditions of excellence here, and I hope that you take full advantage of the amazing opportunity to join a fraternity by finding an organization with which you can align yourself. I assure you that fraternity life will enrich your experience as a Longhorn. Good luck in your collegiate endeavors, and I look forward to seeing you join the ranks of the prestigious fraternity men who have come before you.

Sincerely,

Edwin QianIFC President

Interfraternity council spotlightThe Interfraternity Council at the University of Texas at Austin serves as the governing body for the twenty-six men’s social fraternities on campus. It currently has eight executive council members who are elected representatives serving full, calendar year terms. Elections for executive council take place every fall near the end of the semester. In addition, IFC is composed of sixteen cabinet members and eight judicial board members plus chapter presidents from each fraternity. The executive council sends out applications and conducts interviews in order to decide who exactly fits appropriately in each cabinet position. The IFC’s vision is to uphold faithfully the ideals and beliefs of its predecessors and create a unified community that is 2,648 fraternity men strong, full of leaders both in academia and in service.

The IFC Cabinet is composed of internal committees responsible for leadership, operations, risk reduction, scholarship, public relations, recruitment, alumni relations, Greek relations, and philanthropy. Chapter presidents, IFC representatives from each fraternity, and cabinet members have one vote per person on issues and proposals brought before the executive council. Each member of the IFC is offered the opportunity to serve on the cabinet or the judicial board. The fraternity man who is selected for each position has the responsibility to act as the primary communication link between the IFC Executive Council and his respective chapter. The IFC is guided by the Advisor to the Interfraternity Council, Phil Butler, an experienced, full-time administrator in the Sorority and Fraternity Life area of the Office of the Dean of Students.

Each year, the IFC hosts at least three community-wide philanthropy events. The IFC Open is our annual golf tournament held every Spring near the end of the school year that benefits the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Austin Area, a non-profit, locally governed agency devoted to improving the social and education skills, physical health and fitness, and emotional well-being of kids most in need. Each fraternity is encouraged to form teams of four to compete for prizes and trophies while simultaneously raising money for this organization. Additionally, every year IFC uploads pictures of each fraternity’s philanthropic efforts to its social media platforms. Fraternity members raise money for their respective philanthropies by encouraging actives to “like” their pictures. For each “like,” IFC donates a certain amount of money. The IFC donates an extra lump-sum of money to fraternities with the most “liked” pictures. Lastly, Movember is the IFC’s largest philanthropic effort of the year. Fraternity members grow out their mustaches in an effort to raise money for cancer research and awareness about men’s health. You can visit movember.com for more information.

SORORITY & FRATERNITY LIFE AT TEXASThe Sorority and Fraternity Community at The University of Texas at Austin is made up of 72 fraternities and sororities organized within six governing councils that make up 15% of the student body at UT Austin. Joining a fraternity will allow you to be a part of the larger Interfraternity Council community that is strongly connected to the University and the greater Austin community.

The Interfraternity Council is only one of six bodies of fraternities and sororities at the university. Included in the Greek Community are the members of the Latino Panhellenic Council, the Multicultural Greek Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, the Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic Council, and the University Panhellenic Council. Affiliate Groups represent five fraternities and sororities on campus. They have equal access to all of the leadership development, scholarship, risk management, and academic opportunities and resources offered. The only difference is that they have not joined a council yet.

The Latino Panhellenic Council is a body of four fraternities and four sororities that each have a unique place on our campus. Each organization focuses on celebrating Latino culture and sharing it but welcomes everyone They are not Latino exclusive, but rather they pride themselves on being accepting of all races and ethnicities. The council embodies leadership, community service, cultural understanding, and academics to maximize the experience of its members on the 40 Acres.

The Multicultural Greek Council is composed of two fraternities and one sorority that work towards forming a diverse Greek Community. They are multicultural by mission and seek to explore and celebrate the diversity on the 40 Acres. MGC is the newest addition to UT Austin’s diverse community, and its organizations focus on multicultural awareness, philanthropy, and scholastic excellence to develop members into leaders.

The National Pan-Hellenic Council has a rich history and purpose within the Black community. UT Austin is currently home to three fraternities and two sororities that all have a collective interest and duty to uplift and unite the African-American community. Its organizations focus on leadership, scholastic excellence, community service, and involvement within the African-American community.

The Texas Asian Pan-Hellenic Council promotes Asian-American awareness and the opportunity to develop oneself as a leader while simultaneously serving the community. With six sororities and two fraternities, TAPC is an established group of organizations with strong values and a proven record of service. Its members focus on leadership, scholastic excellence, and community service.

University Panhellenic Council is composed of fourteen sororities, and each one offers a unique opportunity to give back to the community. UPC promotes involvement within the sorority through leadership positions, academic achievement, philanthropic activities, and lasting sisterhood. Any female student who is enrolled at UT Austin and has been granted full-time status may participate in one of the most notable centers of women’s leadership on the 40 Acres.

ABOUT RECRUITMENT

IFC Recruitment at UT Austin is “open and informal.” This means that there are no official start/stop times or dates for fraternities to conduct recruitment activities. The IFC does not sponsor any “Formal Recruitment” events or activities. Because there is no formal recruitment period, when and how a fraternity conducts its recruitment activities are left to the discretion of each individual chapter. Therefore some chapters may focus the bulk of their recruitment efforts in the summer, while others focus their efforts leading up to and after the first day of classes. No fraternity may conduct new member activities until after the first week of school.

When is IFC Recruitment?

Every IFC fraternity takes a fall new member class, so most men join fraternities in the fall. Not every fraternity takes a new member class in the spring semester, though many chapters do. This is left up to each chapter to decide what is right for them.

Do I have to join a fraternity in the fall semester?

A man is eligible to participate in recruitment and join a fraternity if he is enrolled at The University of Texas at Austin as a full-time student. A full-time student is defined as taking twelve credit hours per semester, excluding correspondence courses and courses at other universities. He must not be a new member or initiated member of any North American Interfraternity Conference fraternity. Some fraternities, but not all, are permitted to recruit PACE students. You should check with the fraternity’s national office to find out for certain.

Who is eligible for Recruitment?

Each person looks for different attributes in a fraternity. Each of the chapters focuses on one or more of the following: academics, athletics, campus involvement, community service, leadership, and/or friendship. The choice is yours, so look carefully at all of the chapters and evaluate which one best meets your needs and interests. We advise potential members to visit, at a minimum, three different fraternities before making a final decision.

How do I decide which chapter to join?

Many chapters continue to recruit and affiliate new men throughout the entire school year. Events are organized and scheduled at each chapter’s discretion. But be aware that not all fraternities host recruitment activities during the spring semester.

HOW TO REGISTER

HOW DO I REgister for IFC Recruitment?

Registering for IFC recruitment is optional, however it is highly recommended that you do so. Visit www.texasifc.org and register online. Registering is free and makes your contact information available to all IFC fraternities.

WHAT ARE REFERENCE OR RECOMMENDATION LETTERS?

Reference and recommendation letters are a component of sorority recruitment. You do not need references or recommendation letters to participate in IFC recruitment.

WHAT IS A BID?A bid is a formal invitation to join a fraternity. Bids may be given at any time both verbally and/or in writing, however the IFC does not consider any bids officially accepted until after the first Friday of the fall semester, in case there are any disputes about a potential member amongst two or more fraternities. This means that no new member activities should occur until after the first week of school.

MEMBERSHIP EXPECTATIONS

Potential members may receive multiple bids from different fraternities, but may only accept one. How can I increase my chances of getting a bid? 1. Register with the IFC as soon as possible to let the fraternities know you are interested. 2. Look at as many chapters as you can, and select the ones on which you would like to concentrate. 3. Be positive. Do not criticize other chapters or potential new members. 4. Get to know other students. Although many students feel more comfortable if they recruit with friends, don’t count on joining the same fraternity as your friends. 5. Be yourself.

What are the financial obligations for IFC fraternity membership?

Chapter fees fund various activities of the organization such as academic programs, service activities, alumni and parent events, national dues and lifetime membership. Specific costs for each IFC organization can be found at: http://deanofstudents.utexas.edu/sfl/join_table.php?council=ifc.

Additional costs throughout the semester may include parking at the chapter house (parking availability and cost will vary by chapter), optional meal plans, pictures, gifts, social events, T-shirts, etc.

Several chapters at the University of Texas at Austin offer payment plans and scholarships for members who need financial assistance. Please note that when you become a new member of a fraternity, you are affiliating with that organization. If at any time you decide to disaffiliate, you may still be held responsible for fees or payments required to fulfill your contract with the organization.

37

How much time does a fraternity take? There is a required meeting once a week where you will exchange information on chapter events and fraternity education. Weekly chapter study sessions are a programming option for all members, in addition to events like brotherhood activities, community service projects, and social events. Remember, the more you put into the fraternity experience, the more you will get out of it.

How long will it take to be initiated? Most chapters have moved to a period that ranges from six to twelve weeks. The new-member period affords opportunities to meet other members, learn fraternity history and feel at home in the chapter. Each chapter establishes its own new-member program and initiation dates. This is a great question to ask the active members as you meet them during recruitment activities.

Should I attend The University of Texas at Austin’s summer orientation?Yes! Orientation allows you to take placement tests, to earn college credit, pre-register for classes and become acquainted with the campus. A session on Sorority and Fraternity life will be presented as a program during Orientation. Please come to meet representatives of the Sorority and Fraternity community and to ask any questions you may have.

STATEMENTS ABOUT ALCOHOL/HAZING

The law defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act, occurring on or off the campus of an educational institution, by one person alone or acting with others, directed against a student, that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of a student for the purpose of pledging, being initiated into, affiliating with, holding office in, or maintaining membership in any organization whose members are or include students at an educational institution.

What Is HAzing?

Page 41: IFC 2014 Recruitment Guide

39

Hazing is commonly defined as any action taken or situation created, whether on or off fraternity premises, to produce mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Anti-hazing legislation or policies have been adopted by the State of Texas, The University of Texas at Austin, the Interfraternity Council and all national fraternities. If you are subjected to hazing, state law requires that you report it to the Office of the Dean of Students. Hazing has no place in the fraternity community and should not be tolerated. Chapters that haze are not worth your time and are dangerous.

ALCOHOL AND RECRUITMENTRecruitment is intended to provide opportunities to spend time getting to know each other. According to the IFC Constitution, alcohol is not to be served to minors under any circumstances (IFC Risk Management Policy, Section 1K). No alcohol should be served to minors during any recruitment function, whether it is one-on-one or in a large group. Most IFC organizations have national policies that bar the use of alcohol at any and all recruitment and new member activities.

If you are under 21 and you are offered alcohol at a fraternity event, that chapter is violating UT Austin’s Institutional Rules and they are also breaking the law. If this happens, you should seriously consider whether or not you want to join an organization that has so little integrity.

No alcohol should be used or be present during any recruitment function or event, of any kind.
