• Full x-ray polarization control (APPLE-II undulator)
• 80-4000 eV energy range (~soft)
• Variable x-ray beam size and focal distance (KB system)
• (ES1) High-field SC vector magnet: 6T, 2T with 1.5K-370K sample temp.
• (ES2) UHV scattering chamber, 2T magnet, large angular access, 20K-350K

E resolution with MEG
BL optics – photon energy resolution
BOREAS
- Instrumental resolution (E/E) ~ 10,000 for typically used 15/15 µm (entrance/exit) slits opening
Photon flux with MEG)
- Flux varying from 1010 to 1012 ph/s @ sample (depending on E)
IFAE-ALBA | Alba, 13th December, 2012BL29 - BOREAS 5 of 20
“HECTOR” 6 Tesla magnet @ UHV
- Running full experiments since May 2012
Scope
- X-ray absorption measurements with:
a) variable polarization incoming light
b) variable sample temperature
c) variable applied magnetic field
Detection systems:
- Electron drain current @ sample - working
- Si diode (transmission mode) - working
- Si diode (total fluorescence yield) - in progress (Si diodes made by IRD, model AXUV100)
Detection, planned:
- Si drift diode (or other) (partial fluorescence yield)
BOREAS
BL endstations – XMCD cryomagnet
Requirements: E window selection, E range ca. 200-3000 eV

2D detection upgrade project
Alternatives for 2D detection
- Backthinned CMOS (comercially unavailable for soft x-rays when decission on CCD taken)
Requirements: large dynamic range, fast reading time, UHV compatible
Foreseen Detection systems:
a) Point detection (~“0D”)
- Si diode, from “IRD”, model SXUV700
- GaAsP diode, from “Hamamatzu”
- Channeltron (for high E, photon counting)
a) Spatially resolved detection (2D)
- Microchannel plate, from “Hamamatzu”
- CCD by “e2v”, 2k x 2k pixel, 20 micron pixel size; “XCAM” mouting (awarded)
