November is Foundation Month

Remember EREY : Every Rotarian Every Year Last Monday was a very special meeting, which was reflected in the number of special guests whose company we enjoyed. Chairman for the World War 11 Recognition evening was Gary Doherty, himself a former member of the ADF. Among the guests welcomed by Gary were Past District Governor David Anderson, Jack and Nell Ford, Norma Court and Margaret, Frank Johnson with Carl and Debbie Ure, our own member Tony Lee as President of the Seymour RSL Sub Branch, and our musical entertainers Sandra and Joseph Spotswood. Federal member for Seymour, Rob Mitchell MHR tendered his apology. As usual the first item after the invocation was the toasts: Catriona Jarman officiated, and chose the Rotary Club of Rabaul for our recognition.

FROM OUR PRESIDENT, COMMITTEE CHAIRS and ROTARIANS

Community Service Fundraising during the recent past has resulted in the following contributions to the club coffers: Tastes of the Goulburn: $583 Lunch on the River: $821 Shake the Can: $1662 Family of Rotary Marlene Campbell advised that PP Mark Dossor had not undergone surgery at this time, and his ankle was still awaiting attention at the Northern Hospital. Public Relations Marlene, wearing another hat, thanked Catriona and John for their contribution to promoting Rotary on local radio today. Sergeant In the absence of Sergeant Hugh, Corporal Liz did a pretty good job in fundraising, starting with those missing name badges, then to new grandparents (congratulations Fred and Paulette), onto Gary, Fred again and Greg for their performances last week as jockeys (the Holeproof Award), finally bagging anyone who won a prize in the sweeps.

Chairman Gary then took us to the purpose of the celebration tonight. He explained that on the occasion of Anzac Day 2016, he had noted that our World War 11 veterans were all getting on in years, and were finding it difficult to participate in events. He saw an opportunity for the RSL to honour the surviving WW2 veterans for their service to Australia by recognising the 3 living amongst us in Seymour. On behalf of the club, Gary and President Ruth presented Certificates of Recognition to the trio: Frank Johnson has been a long time supporter of the RSL, and until a recent move to Barrabill House, lived in Alexander St; Norma Court a relative of member Ian Chadwick served in a RAAF Signals Unit based at Ballarat; Jack Ford, with his wife Nell, is still active in RSL affairs. Members joined in congratulating and acknowledging all 3 and their families. During the evening, all present were entertained by Sandra and Joseph, whose repertoire of World War 2 songs was very much appreciated. The finale “We are Australian” was particularly moving. As usual, we finished up with a spin of the wheel. Lucky ticket holder was Christine Doherty, but she was not lucky enough for the wheel to stop at a winning point. In concluding, Chairman Gary reminded those present of the activity on Friday 11 November, Armistice Day. At the hospital gates, from 9.30 a short ceremony will see the dedication and unveiling of a new WWl “Lone Pine” memorial . This will be followed at 11 by the RSL Remembrance Service. President Ruth then closed the meeting, thanking all of our guests, including Sandra and Joseph for their contribution.

Other stuff The Caravan We are still looking for people who will help on a working bee to start refurbishing the caravan. It’s not urgent, but it would be good to have it done by Christmas. Talk to Tony Woodhouse, please. November is Foundation month The Rotary Foundation is our very own charity and philanthropic organisation. It really is deserving of our support. Much of the work for which Rotary is given credit is funded by Foundation. Foundation Chair John Keeffe will talk to the meeting on 28 November about how we can best be involved in OUR charity. We cannot in all honesty expect others to contribute if we do not ourselves do so. “Every Rotarian Every Year” is not just a 4 word slogan: it is a call to action. Two dollars a week is not too much to ask for your charitable giving to YOUR foundation. Please think about it.

Stop Press: Mark Dossor is home, and enjoying full service 5 star accommodation. Readers will be pleased that next week he will resume as editor of this journal; and several other members who had been roped in to do the Bulletin will be relieved at this news.
