If innovation diffused across all of our manufacturing shop floors in a “Heart-Beat”, what could we achieve?

Manufacturing Innovation takes too long….

Did you know that it takes several months to several years to find, implement and benefit from an innovation in high value manufacturing*? Experience however shows that if you can´t get it done in under 3 months, it will not really get done. * (Source: OECD "Action steps for sustainable manufacturing" https://www.oecd.org/innovation/green/toolkit/actionstepsforsustainablemanufacturing.htm).

Innovation Speed is THE Dominant Success Factor

• Appreciate innovation as the journey from idea to market saturation. • Apply living systems versus linear process thinking. • Focus top-down on both technology and human game changers. • Understand acceleration variables and their interdependence. • Respect systemic thresholds and tipping points. • Allow for collaborative simulation and gaming. • Reframe approaches to enable viral and swarm behaviours.

The Journey to Real-Time Innovation across the Whole Product Life-Cycle of Manufacturing must…

How do we MEASURE and INFLUENCE the speed of manufacturing innovation?

11/09/2019 3

Context • Based on the Diffusion of Innovation

Curve (Rogers, E.M. (2003) Diffusion of innovations. Free Press, 5th edition, 2003. (First published 1962))

• Starts with a “really really good idea”. • Ends with an idea becoming a “house-

hold” concept.

Challenge

• Measurement • Variables • Influencers

“…transnational and involve minimum six independent organisations from at least three Programme Countries, out of which at least two higher education institutions and at least two enterprises.“ “The overall aim is to help strengthen Europe's capacity to innovate and to support the modernisation of Europe's higher education systems. Knowledge Alliances focus on one or more of the following: • developing new, innovative, and multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, • stimulating entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial skills of higher education and company

staff, and • exchanging knowledge and working together on new solutions.” Funding provided under these programmes covers full costs based on a generic funding model and does not require direct financial contributions from participants. Maximum funding volume for a three year programme is in the range of €1M. More: https://ec.europa.eu/programmes/erasmus-plus/opportunities/knowledge-alliances_en

Support the capability of European high value manufacturing ecosystems

in disruptively accelerating the diffusion of

knowledge from ideation to market saturation

by acknowledging the complex adaptive

nature of the innovation phenomenon and

shifting the perspective from linear process to living systems (include the leverage of

digital infrastructures).

Current policies… • Are focused only on individual stages of the diffusion of

innovation curve and transitions between them -> no “end-to-end” view.

• Emphasize early stages of the diffusion of innovation curve and transitions between them -> no “end-to-end” view.

• See the world from the perspective of the “idea” -> no view of the living system(s) that it journeys through “end-to-end”.

• Cannot trace the diffusion of ideas robustly. • Are pro-innovation and survivor-biased -> no critical

reflection on responsibility of innovation or consideration of innovation failures or their re-engineering.

• Neglect the individual context of adoption for late majority and laggards.

• Do not reflect in the half-life of the innovation before its replacement begins to diffuse.

• Describe, simulate and game innovation behaviour based on success stories using living system principles translated into standard business process notation,

• Determine the (in-) dependent variables (“game changers”) that significantly influence the acceleration of knowledge diffusion,

• Identify the tipping points that signal the disruptive acceleration of knowledge diffusion,

• Define the design standards for ideas to traverse the diffusion of innovation curve with disruptively rapid speed and

• Create educational and policy interventions at all levels and for all stakeholders that enable the collective (swarm) behaviour leading to disruptively rapid knowledge diffusion.

Proposers will be funded for at least a (part-time) manager and a (full-time) researcher. They will be expected to assume ownership of / accountability for specific work-packages and ensure that all formal requirements are met in a timely manner. Current high level work-packages defined in the COST proposal and which will need to be refined / assigned are: • Diffusion Stories: Mapping the innovation diffusion of (non-) successful high value manufacturing

innovations. • Living Networks: Creating a reference-architecture and its simulation / gaming for game-changing

exchanges in high value manufacturing innovation diffusion. • Disruptive Technology: Understanding how technology disruptively accelerates high value manufacturing

innovation diffusion. • Disruptive Relationships: Understanding how human relationships disruptively accelerate high value

manufacturing innovation diffusion. • Designing for Rapid Diffusion: Defining the optimal design of high value manufacturing ideas to diffuse in a

“heart-beat”. • Innovation Automation: Establishing an online platform for simulating and gaming high value

manufacturing innovation diffusion. • Event / Mission coordination.

• Potential NEW workpackages: Structured Ideation, Experimental Innovation, Traceability of Ideas from

Ideation to Market Saturation, Stage Play learning experience

Industry partners will provide a project coordinator who will contribute 80 person-hours annually. The benefits of participating for the industrial partner are: • Identification of short-, medium and long term actionable interventions to rapidly accelerate

the diffusion of innovation across their whole product life cycle (diffusion of innovation curve). • Determination of relevant short-, medium and long term actionable changes to the whole

product life cycle management process (diffusion of innovation curve) itself. • Enablement of stakeholders to apply the identified actionable interventions. • Benchmarking of efforts against comparable industry organizations. Industry partners will support the following activities: • Training of a relevant stakeholder group • Translation of company whole product life cycle management process into living systems

notation, then standard business process notation and finally a simulation and gaming tool. • Mapping of innovation success and failure stories using the generated simulation and

simulation model. • Stakeholder training in the implementation of design standards for new ideas. • Achieving process improvement opportunities.

1. Knowledge multiplies when it is shared. Knowledge is a limitless and expandable source of economic wealth. Intellectual assets – effectively exploited through innovation – are the most valuable resource to manage.

2. Value is created when knowledge moves from the point of origin to the point of highest need or opportunity.

(Technology) Innovation encompasses the full spectrum, from idea creation to commercialisation (and market saturation), and successful innovation involves converting knowledge flows into marketable goods and services.

3. Collaboration for mutual leverage provides optimal utilisation of tangible and intangible resources within and across boundaries. Collaboration replaces the competitive (win/lose) paradigm prevalent today. Win/win benefits are based on pooling and leveraging competencies: knowledge, know-how and skills. Source:
