iEXCEL Executive Summary

It is with pleasure that we present the fi rst iEXCELSM Annual Report, covering the period of July 2015 to June 2016. This report illustrates the achievements that are refl ections of the extraordinary support received from the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) leadership team, faculty, staff, students and community stakeholders. We appreciate the University of Nebraska Foundation and generous philanthropists that share our vision and are committed to making it a reality.

At publication of this report, the design for the Global Center for Advanced Inteprofessional Learning (Global Center) is near completion and has been approved by the Board of Regents. The Global Center will serve as the headquarters for the Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning (iEXCEL), the transformative program that will connect community and rural training sites in Nebraska to foster collaboration across the region.

In addition, due diligence is being conducted related to the technology selection and integration for the project. Most importantly, the iEXCEL team is working with faculty, students and the staff of UNMC and Nebraska Medicine (NM) to ensure that the use of simulation of all kinds, including visualization, is adopted and that there is a sense of readiness for when the Global Center opens in 2018.

Important next steps include the completion of fundraising, the coalescence of key community entities around the development of educational programs that train the future workforce in the technical and content development aspects of 3D and Virtual Reality, and the continued engagement of UNMC and supporting communities.

Finally, our sincere gratitude goes out to everyone who is helping take iEXCEL from vision to reality.

Sincerely, Pam Boyers, Ben Stobbe & Suzanne Torroni-RobertsThe iEXCEL Leadership Team

GOAL$102,000,000FY 2015/16 PUBLIC FUNDS$30,000,000FY 2015/16 PRIVATE FUNDS$62,000,000

Philanthropy

The University of Nebraska Foundation worked closely with the iEXCEL team to foster philanthropic support to make the Global Center a reality. The Foundation was tasked with raising $72 million in private funding to combine with $30 million in public funding to meet the $102 million required for the project. Potential donors were engaged and informed by the Foundation on the iEXCEL program and its evolution. Many community philanthropists had the opportunity to experience iEXCEL in its early stages at the iEXCEL Visualization Hub. These efforts have been fruitful with $62 million of the private funding secured thanks to nine generous and visionary donors who are empowering iEXCEL and UNMC to lead the way for creating a healthier future.

“The educational tools that will be used in this center – which will be deployed across the state – will change the way we educate in health care and may be applied to other NU academic programs. The center will also serve as an economic driver for Nebraska, fostering new opportunities in public-private partnerships and helping to attract and retain top talent to our state.”

James Linder, MD, Chief Strategist, University of Nebraska

“iEXCEL represents a great opportunity for students at UNMC. The simulation and technology iEXCEL aims to integrate into the classroom will allow students to learn not only the content of their studies but the context in which their fi eld operates. This represents a fundamental shift towards a practical and functional model of education that will benefi t students and, in turn, their patients and the community at large.”
