IEMC MUSTANG

I know everyone thinks we’re crazy but Melanie and I are Mustang fanatics.

We’ve owned a lot of Mustangs over the years and have enjoyed every one of them.

We’ve been trading up to our dream Mustang, a GT350, but this Bullitt came along

with a deal we couldn’t resist. After the test drive we had to have it. So for our 45th

anniversary we purchased our ’19 Bullitt and we’ve haven’t looked back.

The history of the Bullitt legacy started with the stars of the 1968 movie

“Bullitt”, two Highland Green 1968 fastback Mustangs equipped with the 390 V8.

They later became known as the ‘hero’ car and the ‘jump’ car.

The movie’s main character, Frank Bullitt, portrayed by Steve McQueen

drove a 1968 Mustang GT in a 10 minute chase pursuing two bad guys in a 1968

Charger. The chase has thrilled movie goers for years with its realism and the speed

of the chase.

The history of the two star Mustangs is too long for these pages, but they

remained out of sight for nearly 50 years. Both cars reappeared just in time for the

50th anniversary of “Bullitt” in 2018.

Ford has produced

three tribute cars to

celebrate the spirit of

“Bullitt” and the star 1968

Ford Mustang GT. Ford

released the first tribute car,

the Mustang Bullitt GT, in

April of 2001 with designers

drawing on the heritage of

the original Bullitt car.

‘Stang of the Month (cont.)

The Bullitt GT was sold as an interpretation of the movie car using the SN95 ‘New Edge’ platform. It

came in unique colors and a toned down appearance with additional performance. Ford built 5,582 Bullitt

Mustang GTs that year.

In 2008 Ford surprised Mustang enthusiast with another version of the Bullitt based on the “retro”

styling of the 5th generation SN197 Mustang. The “retro” Bullitt Mustang was built for two years with the

’08 celebrating the 40th anniversary of “Bullitt”. Again the Bullitt Mustang came in unique colors with a

toned down appearance with additional

horsepower and a distinctive exhaust. Ford

built 6,624 Bullitts in the two years of

production.

In 2018 Ford introduced its third

Bullitt Mustang based on the 6th generation

S550 for the movie’s 50th anniversary at the

North American International Auto Show in

Detroit. During the show the surviving “hero”

car Steve McQueen drove during the movie

made a surprise appearance.

Again Ford designed the 2019 Bullitt

Mustang in unique colors with a toned down

appearance, performance enhancements and

a distinctive exhaust note based on the

original’s 390 V8. Each Bullitt is built with

serialized chassis numbers to ensure

authenticity. The unique chassis number is displayed on a plaque located on the passenger air bag of each

car.

The 2019 Bullitt has its own body code and is comparable to a GT Premium with the Performance

Package Level 1, premium interior with LCD dash, upgraded interior materials with green stitching, active

exhaust and enhanced security system. Performance enhancements were borrowed from the GT350 and

Ford Performance parts bin. Only a six speed manual transmission backed the naturally aspirated 3rd

gen Coyote engine producing 480hp.

Bullitt owners have created their own enthusiasm with books, online websites/forums with their own

stories about Bullitt Mustang ownership and theories about the missing movie cars. Over the years many

enthusiasts say the Bullitt tributes are a “sub-brand” of the Mustang much like that of the GT350, GT500,

Boss 302, Mach 1, and the California Special, but that is still to be seen. But, until then, as with all our

other Mustangs, we’re going to drive and enjoy ours while always remembering Steve McQueen and his

Bullitt in that now iconic chase scene.

Well things are not progressing a fast as we would

like. I’m hoping they get the vaccine proven and ready to

go by the end of the year. It sure would be nice to start

the New Year without all the worries and stress we have

all been going through.

Some of our club members attended the Ronald

MacDonald House car show at the Coeur d’Alene Casino

on Sat. August 22nd. We had a good turn out. There

were 15 cars from the IEMC. They had over 100 cars

from different clubs and individual owners show up. Tom

Seep took a fist place with his black Mustang. Nice job

Tom. It was a good show and I think the RMH was happy

with the turn out. Lots of nice cars there! They are really

good people working for great cause. I’m glad we support

them.

What a tuff year! It’s good to know that our

members still hang in there. It’s not fun sending out

emails about things that have to be cancelled, but all the

clubs are dealing with the same situations. We have been

able to find a couple of spots that we can still have a board

meeting and still keep 6 feet apart! Discussions are open

and we work together to keep the club informed of any

new ideas and/or events that may work. I think we all have

some good ideas BUT they don’t all work out. We will

keep trying.

So hang in there everyone. Don’t forget to get your

FLU SHOT! Wear your masks. Take care of yourself and

your family. We will get through this together. Remember

the IEMC is #1 !

Ponies On The Trail

A group of IEMC members met for a cruise to 2nd Ave. Pizza in Sandpoint, Idaho on August 1st.

The trip began in Rathdrum, ID and followed scenic Highway 41 to Newport,WA, then over to

Sandpoint (and points beyond for a few members).

There was a small grassy area with a few picnic tables near the pizza restaurant where people

enjoyed their lunch while adhering to the COVID restrictions and “social distancing” since inside dining

was not available. The food was good and the cruise was a welcome reprieve from the constrictions of

the shutdown that we’ve all experienced lately.

Back In The Day Here’s a look at a page from the now-defunct Super Ford Magazine from February 1981.

Many a story has been told about the Hertz Rent-A-Racer, most with horrible endings. One wonders

how many club members ever owned or rented one of these classics.

Mustang News: S650 Platform To Repeat 8-Year Run

The next generation Mustang will begin its run in late 2022 as a 2023 model and will have a

production run of eight years according to information leaked from suppliers. The S650 platform will replace

the current S550 vehicles but no other information is available regarding changes to the body or

mechanicals. The commitment by Ford for a long run of new Mustangs is good news for car-guys in light of

the trend to move away from traditional cars and toward an almost exclusively SUV line-up by many

manufacturers, including Ford (the Mustang will be the only vehicle which is not an SUV or truck produced

by the Blue Oval).
