IEEE: Advancing Technology for the Benefit of Humanity

Kathleen A. Kramer is a Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director-Elect to IEEE, the world’s largest technical society. Beginning in January 2017, Dr. Kramer will lead the Western US region for IEEE. She represents IEEE as an Engineering Accreditation Commission member of ABET (formerly known as the

Accreditation Board of Engineering & Technology). She also serves as Vice-President for the IEEE Aerospace Electronics Systems Society, leading their Distinguished Lecturer program and their cyber security technical panel. She has been a Member of Technical Staff at several companies, including ViaSat, Hewlett Packard, and Bell Communications Research. She has co-authored over 100 publications, maintains an active research agenda and has recent publications in the areas of multisensor data fusion, intelligent systems, and neural and fuzzy systems. She received a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering Magna Cum Laude with a second major in Physics from Loyola Marymount University, and her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology. She was nominated in 2014 for an Athena Pinnacle Award, is a proud member of the IEEE Women in Engineering special interest group and was the founding advisor of the University of San Diego Society of Women Engineers Student Section.

Raj Talluri serves as senior vice president of product management for Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. (QTI), where he is currently responsible for managing QTI’s Internet Of Everything (IoE), mobile computing and Qualcomm® Snapdragon Sense™ ID 3D finger print technology businesses. Talluri holds a

Ph.D in Electrical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. He also holds a Master of Engineering from Anna University in Chennai, India and a Bachelor of Engineering from Andhra University in Waltair, India. He has published more than 35 journal articles, papers, and book chapters in many leading electrical engineering publications. He has been granted 13 U.S. patents for image processing, video compression, and media processor architectures. Raj Talluri was chosen as No. 5, in Fast Company’s list of 100 Most Creative People in business in 2014.

Sandhya Jetti was born and raised in Hyderabad, India. She received her M.S in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri, Rolla (now called Missouri University of Science and Technology). She worked as Motor Controls Engineer at General Motors, Torrance, CA and Power Electronics Design Engineer at

Enerpro Inc, Santa Barbara, CA. She is currently a Sr. Electrical Engineer, in Transponics Department at Hyperloop-One, LA. She is responsible engineer for medium voltage high speed AC switches, one of the key components of Hyperloop propulsion. Her areas of interest include power electronics, design, control and development and emerging technologies in electric propulsion. She loves traveling and enjoys playing badminton and ping pong.

Semiconductor Innovation – A Continuum of Opportunities

Rakesh Kumar is a semiconductor industry veteran, an entrepreneur, and an educator. He is President and CEO of TCX Technology Connexions, a company which provides management, business, entrepreneurial and technical ‘bridging the gaps’ consulting services in advanced semiconductor technology and virtual

operations areas. Clients include emerging fabless IC companies, mid-size and large, Fortune 500 IC companies, as well as leading research organizations. Currently he educates and mentors potential entrepreneurs at the University of California San Diego. Dr. Kumar authored the book “Fabless Semiconductor Implementation”, published by McGraw Hill. He is an IEEE Life Fellow and active volunteer since late 1980’s. During his 42 year career in the semiconductor industry Dr. Kumar has also been the VP&GM of Cadence Design’s worldwide Silicon Technology Services business unit, and has held various technical and management positions at Unisys and Motorola. He received the Ph.D. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Rochester in 1974 and 1971 respectively. He graduated from IIT Delhi in 1969 with a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering. He received an Executive MBA from the University of California, San Diego in 1989.

Jessica Gordon leads software development for Illumina’s high throughput sequencing platforms. She joined Illumina in January 2007 as a software engineer and has contributed to a wide range of informatics solutions from instrument control and data analysis to cloud computing. Prior to Illumina,

Jessica worked as a software engineer at Lehman Brothers and as a systems analyst at Amaranth Advisors. She received her B.S. and Masters of Engineering in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In addition, she holds a second B.S. in Management Science and Finance from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

ALBERT PISANO, PHD Dean, UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering

Albert P. Pisano began his service as Dean of the Jacobs School of Engineering on September 1, 2013. Pisano holds the Walter J. Zable Chair in Engineering

and serves on the faculty of the departments of mechanical and aerospace engineering and electrical and computer engineering. Pisano is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to the design, fabrication, commercialization, and educational aspects of MEMS. Pisano’s research interests include: micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) wireless sensors for harsh environments (600°C) such as gas turbines and geothermal wells; and additive, MEMS manufacturing techniques such as low-temperature, low-pressure nano-printing of nanoparticle inks and polymer solutions. Other research interests and activities include MEMS for a wide variety of applications, including RF components, power generation, drug delivery, strain sensors, biosensors, micro inertial instruments, disk-drive actuators and nanowire sensors. He is a co-inventor listed on more than 20 patents in MEMS and has co-authored more than 300 archival publications. Pisano is a co-founder of ten start-up companies in the areas of transdermal drug delivery, transvascular drug delivery, sensorized catheters, MEMS manufacturing equipment, MEMS RF devices and MEMS motion sensors.

NATASHA BALAC, PHD President & CEO, Data Insight Technology, Inc.

Demystifying Data Science and Big Data

Natasha received her Master's and Ph.D. in Computer Science from Vanderbilt University with an emphasis in Data Mining from large data sets. Her dissertation focused on creating and applying novel data mining techniques to mobile robots and real time sensor data. She has been with UCSD since 2003. She has also

led multiple collaborations across a wide range of organizations in industry, government and academia. She had founded and led the Predictive Analytics Center of Excellence at the Supercomputer Center until 2016. She is currently leading Data Science Program at Calit2/Qualcomm institute and teaches at the computer Science Department. Dr. Balac has collaborated on a number of large and multidisciplinary government and research funded projects including the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services, NASA, NSF, CPUC, Smart Grid, Smart City, etc. Dr. Balac has founded and serves at the President and CEO of Data Insight Discovery, Inc. DID’s charter is enabling businesses to discover actionable insight from vast amounts of data.

LISA ISAACSON

Founder, NuLEDs, Inc.

Changing an Industry: The History to Date of the Lighting-Over-IP Revolution

At age 18 Lisa became the 19th woman to join the electrical union in San Diego. She was one of 15 people selected from over 300 applicants to join IBEW local 569 in 1982. She excelled in the apprenticeship training, earning a 3.9 GPA, and

went on to be a journeyman and foreman for Southland Electric. She got her Electrical Contractor’s license, and started Lisa Electric in 1997. This is where she became passionate about lighting. Lisa and Chris, a mechanical engineer, have started two lighting companies. The second, NuLEDs, was founded by the pair in 2011 to change the way LEDs are powered and controlled. They are now bringing about the biggest change in lighting since Edison invented the light bulb. Lighting-over-IP is powering and controlling lights from an Ethernet switch. NuLEDs developed the first Power-over-Ethernet lighting system that controlled on the IT network and has recently engaged in partnership with Eaton to power and control their lines of LED luminaires.

ROSEMARY FRANCIS, PHD Founder & CEO, Ellexus, Ltd.

Dr. Rosemary Francis is the founder and CEO of Ellexus. Rosemary obtained her PhD in Computer Architecture from the Cambridge University Computer Lab. After working in the chip design industry, Rosemary founded Ellexus to infrastructure and storage scaling problems in scientific and high-performance

computing. Rosemary is a member of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and sits on the steering committee for startup incubator, Ideaspace.
