WIE-Rathon

The second event planned for the same day was WIE-Rathon. This event was originally

aimed for female candidates. But seeing all the action it involved, the young men could not

handle themselves and upon demand, a different level was arranged for males as well. This

not only invoked the physical skills of each participant but also challenged the confidence

and resolve of every candidate participating in the event. The venue was set on the road

that stretched between Baradari and Chemical Department. For women it was a simple race

based upon a hundred meters, while for men it was a hundred meters laced with several

hurdles. A two foot table, followed by a balloon to be inflated, a cupcake to be eaten and

finally a two and fro moving rope to be jumped upon. The event started just after Finger

Painting ended and climaxed at around 3:30. Like always, the event was a favorite of the

students of CIIT Lahore.

Minute to Win It

Day two (3rd April) brought along a relatively hectic routine, with somehow all the events

happening simultaneously. No event head wanted any sort of delay in the proceedings of

their event and tried their level best to keep things in order. Minute to win it, another

peoples favorite! The event started at around 2:00 pm at the venue of A-2. This event was

inspired from AXN’s original show. Each team had 4 tasks to perform and each task had a

complete minute to finish.

This event was always one of the most demanded ones since it was first introduced. The

event went on for about 90 minutes and finalized at 3:30 pm.

Eggstravaganza

This was another new idea introduced for the first time by ICLSB. The concept was to

create

such a parachute or any such device that would protect the given eggs from a fall from the

roof of N-block, which is around two stories high! The event started around 2:45pm. Each

team comprising of 2 people was given 30 minutes to conclude their design of the device

and then it was to be drop tested. The IEEE team was surely dazzled at the creativity and

effort put into everyone’s devices. The event came to an end around 3:30 pm, and

unfortunately no team could protect their eggs but there was still a winner, a team had

managed to perform extraordinarily and would have saved their eggs if not for a small

mishap. It was a delightful experience, even though novel, but well managed!

Quiz of Thrones

Another new thought that came into the mind of ICLSB was Quiz of Thrones. This was a

quiz based event, not targeting for curricular or general knowledge, but about a drama

serial! The Game of Thrones has today’s youth by the guts and somehow also inflating the

ego of every watcher when queried on how good of a fan they are. Using this point to a

benefit ICLSB planned a quiz on the show. Many participants showed up, just as expected.

The quiz started around 2:30 and was a heated competition from the start. Everyone seemed

to have prepared for this event more than they would have for any sort of exam! The event

was divided into 3 parts with eliminations in each round. The event had surely been nerve

wracking, not only for the contestants but even for the management! Reinforcements were

needed soon after the even commenced as the enthusiasm was just unparalleled. The event

finally ended at around 4:15 with the winners joyous at proving their fandom.

Escape Room

The third day also kicked off with yet another fresh idea; Escape Room. In this riddle based

adventure each team had to firstly choose which of their partner was to be locked away and

who they needed to get them out! Four participants had to work on the solutions to the

riddles and find the clues regarding that before they could proceed to help their partner

escape the place they were trapped in. This was a true mind captivating experience where

the clues were laced with knowledge and sense combined. The event heads had done an

awe inspiring effort in putting the riddles together. The event started at around 2:30 pm.

Each team was given no more than 60 minutes for 3 separate portions of riddles and puzzles

to solve. At the end the winner had to be chosen based on how less time they had taken.

Surely we had a victorious team taking only 52 minutes. The idea had taken off, better than

expected! The event came to a halt at 4:00 pm.

Techno Hunt

The final event that was to be held by ICLSB for Students Week’18 was the traditional and

cherished Techno Hunt. This too is almost as old as Junk Art and equally as loved. This

has always been a winner for both ICLSB and the participants, who are found running

around campus. The event started at 4:00 pm. Each team had to find clues by solving riddles

in the clues given to them before or the one they found in the clue itself. Each team needed

to provide a selfie as a proof of their victory at finding each clue! The event came to an

ending at nearly 5:15 pm when the first team checked in with all the proof needed and so

did the proceedings that ICLSB.

Conclusion

Praxis ’18 allowed the organizers and the volunteers to put some extra effort and some

extra will gave some beautiful colors to the societies work. ICLSB not only had a limited

time for marketing but also a very limited time to implement their plans. But there is

nothing known to ICLSB what a little hard work and determination cannot achieve! It can

surely be said that Students Week’18 has been a treasure trove of fruit for the effort put in

it.

TECHFEST ‘18

TechFest 2018 was another great event arranged on 23 rd October ‘2018 in the students’

week 2018 (Fall 2018). It consisted of great events as always and was initialized through

an inauguration ceremony in which the director of COMSATS CUI Lahore honored the

ribbon cutting ceremony. After the inauguration, the different events started and it they all

turned out to be a huge success. The events that were arranged in Tech Fest 2018 are as

follows:

• Finger Painting

• Pubg Gaming Storm

• Quiz of Thrones

• Techno Hunt

• Think Sherlock

• Finger Painting

Quiz of Thrones

Quiz of thrones was yet another brilliant idea that was conceptualized by ICLSB. This

event was based on a very famous show Game of Thrones. This was very cleverly

transformed into a quiz show about the show itself. And needless to say it took off as

anything. It is surprising to see that people are so enthusiastic about the event that extra

volunteers need to be appointed just to know where the first tap came from. 9 teams and

an arduous event to manage is the best way to describe the event.

Techno Hunt

IEEE had all its powers focused towards day 3 of the Students Week. The third day was

made up of two events. The first being techno hunt and this event too has had its history

with IEEE. It is the very basic treasure hunt game where clues are spread all across the

campus and teams have to go around searching for the clues that would finally lead to the

treasure. A total of 4 teams from the students and one faculty tam took part in the

competition and this time no IEEE member accompanied the participants, rather they were

left to search on their own so that they could have the experience to its fullest.

Think Sherlock

Think Sherlock was too was a new idea as the participants were to solve a hypothetical

situation where the entire environment was built on an interactive idea. The contestants

had to search for clues in the given area, talk to the suspects and even do a forensic analysis

of the things provided by the managing team. A crime scene where the participants acted

as the detectives and by the end of it they had to come up with an explanation about who

was the murderer and why. A total of eight teams took part and not only was it a fun

experience but it was very intriguing as the participants had very sharp minds no doubt it

didn’t take long for them to figure out the mystery.

Conclusion

IEEE PLANTATION DRIVE

“He who plants a tree, plants hope”

ICLSB has always played a leading role in bettering the wrongs in the society around it.

Be it empowerment, awareness, scientific advancement or plain social service, ICLSB is

ever ready to play a constructive role in the activity. The recent force towards a greener

Pakistan pumped the spirits of members at ICLSB to play their part and add to the goodness

that was being transpired.

Knowing the good that it would bring to the world around them was a sure motivation for

the members of ICLSB. ICLSB hopes to motivate more young people to step up to make

a positive change in the society and aspires to do so by exemplifying it in the best way.

May the society continue to be the force of positivity it always aspires to be, and continue

bringing further positivity to the society around it!

WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION AND INFORMATION SOCIETY DAY

The purpose of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is to

help raise awareness of the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information

and communication technologies (ICT) can bring to societies and economies, as well as of

ways to bridge the digital divide. 17 May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first

International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International

Telecommunication Union.

Therefore, ICLSB focused its energies under Sir. Zaid Ahmad (Lecturer EE Department

CUI Lahore) to bring about a full day activity on 15th May, for the welfare of the young

and aspiring Students who on the verge of entering their respective fields or fresh graduates

who are now ready to take on the challenges that are almost onto them. Sir. Zaid Ahmad

took charge of another mega event not very far back on CV writing and the event brought

laurels, not only to the management but even to those who attended it.

He managed this event with limited resources and time, and was fairly fresh to the idea of

World Telecom and International Science day. Regardless of the hurdles, he left no door

untouched and managed an impeccable event.

Conclusion

Each speaker was given a shield to applaud their presence and devotion that they showed

in their talks. And were appreciated for the precious time they spared for the event.

With this everything was left to Dr. Saleem Akhtar (HOD Electrical department CUI

Lahore) to give a farewell note and with that souvenirs and certificates were distributed

amongst the registered candidates. And with this the WTISD’18 had now come to an end.

An event that will surely leave a mark for how flamboyant yet formal it was. Such events

not only provide guidance to the youngsters but very importantly provide with a pathway

which these intelligent sparky minds can follow.

A large number of students showed up for this event. IEEE Kinnaird visited the walled

city and the students had a truly wonderful time on the trip. We were accompanied by Ms.

Hinna Arqam, Sir Fahad and Sir Rizwan. We had a tour that encompassed visiting the Delhi

gate, the lavishly decorated Wazir Khan mosque and the Shahi Hammam. As we walked

around this “Walled City,” we got an authentic taste of modern Pakistani life. There were

tons of bazars selling colorful clothing, succulent street food vendors, and even musicians

playing local instruments. The streets are extremely narrow, and there are tons of people

and cars zooming in all directions. You can easily get lost without at least a basic

orientation of the city, which is why our tour guide had been extremely helpful. Students

enjoyed his enthusiastic approach to familiarize us with the history of the places we visited.

We took a quick trip to the Wazir Khan Mosque which is located near the Dehli gate and

is filled with some of the Mughal’s most impressive fret work and tile-work. After taking

some pictures, we were headed towards the food street. The students relished their meal at

the rooftop of Coco’s Den while they enjoyed the breathtaking view of the Badshahi

Mosque. From the walk through the streets of Dehli gate all the way to our lunch at Coco’s

Den we all had an incredible time.

IEEE BLOCKCHIAN HACKATHON-2018

Open-Source Software has emerged as a cross-disciplinary paradigm for a large spectrum of

computing applications. It helps in many ways, keeping the software market away from

monopolies and providing innovative solutions. It not only helps the organizations to keep a

control on the cost of development and deployment but also kept them ahead in terms of

technology and robustness. OSS has also changed the way software applications are architected,

deployed, and consumed but also, they are engineered to provide large distributed cross-platforms

and frameworks.

This year the 12th IEEE ICOSST theme is on “Blockchain”.

Discussions of blockchain are capturing the news, occupy boardroom discussions, and creating

buzz in business, governments, and technology circles around the world. Blockchain technology

has the potential to transform the way businesses operate and has potentially wide-ranging

applications from banking to finance to healthcare to insurance. IEEE Computer Intelligence

Society Lahore Section in technical collaboration with KICS UET Lahore and IEEE Computer

Society, organized a two-day event of Blockchain Hackathon that provided an opportunity for

student and professional teams to compete for cash prizes as you explore the possibilities of a

future on the blockchain.

The Government of Pakistan (GOP) strives to improve its citizens’ quality of life and economic

wellbeing by ensuring availability of accessible, affordable, reliable, universal and high-quality

ICT services. GOP and Ministry of IT strongly believe in mass adoption of emerging digital

technologies and relevant applications as enablers of cross-sector socio-economic development

and transformation of economic activities, governance models and social interaction. This

Hackathon is aligned with UNESCO SDG’s and Ministry of IT (MoIT) Pakistan Digital Policy

2018.

Selected SDGs for participants to focus their projects and solutions on are:

The SDG’s Perspectives:

Blockchain: Opportunities for Health Care

A distributed blockchain that contains health records, documents or images would have data

storage implications and data throughput limitations. Every member in the distributed network of

the health care blockchain would have a copy of every health record for every individual in the

Pakistan and this would not be practical from a data storage perspective. Because health data is

dynamic and expansive, replicating all heath records to every member in the network would be

bandwidth intensive, wasteful on network resources and pose data throughput concerns. For health

care to realize benefits from blockchain, the blockchain would need to function as an access-

control manager for health records and data.

Blockchain: Digital Education Services

Blockchain technology is one of the most revolutionary concepts of our era, and it’s transforming

the manner in which personal and businesses interactions take place on a global scale. The

technology provides a more secure and cost-effective alternative ways. These benefits are precisely

why it shouldn’t be a huge surprise to learn that blockchain higher education technology is now

playing an ever-growing role in our educational systems. In seconds, blockchain technology

accomplishes tasks that what once required significant staff such as monitoring, securing, and

validating.

The cost associated with verifying student accreditations, and the time involved in the requesting

process, limits employers from ascertaining potential new hires’ educational merits. A blockchain-

based system would allow students the ability to prove their academic skills when searching for

employment directly, without delays, and at a much cheaper rate.

Blockchain as a Service (BAAS)

Blockchain has been one of the most awe-inspiring innovations since the Internet came into

existence. Blockchain technology basically allows everyone to hold and make transactions as

strangers but in a completely transparent manner. There is no mediator in between two people

making the transaction, and the entire process becomes easier and cheaper. This concept can be

applied to the entire digital world making any kind of exchange/transactions secure (and not just

bitcoin).

It is this feature of Blockchain technology that has grown in its popularity amongst large banks,

developers and entrepreneurs. Santander Bank, the world’s 10th largest bank, has also been

investigating blockchain technology. They have announced that an internal team is working on

applying blockchain technology and distributed ledgers on various use cases in the bank. Other

international banks like Citi, JPMorgan and Berkeley have also been showing interest in

Blockchain technology. Many startups are building their businesses around blockchain

technology.

Blockchain & Sustainability

Blockchain based applications provide many opportunities to help us create a more sustainable

world: (1) more transparency about individual and collective action, as well as reliable provenance

within global supply chains (2) strengthen accountability loops and reduce bureaucracy and power

asymmetries enabling new types of applications (3) incentivize environmental friendly behavior

with purpose driven technology.

The lack of transparency along the global supply chains create challenges regarding fraud,

pollution, human rights abuses and other inefficiencies. Sustainable behavior of individuals and

companies is therefore currently hard to track and not well rewarded. In this context Blockchain

has the potential to provide an unprecedented level of transparency, with a shared, decentralized

database where immutable and encrypted copies of the information stored on every computer

(node) in the network. This enables otherwise trust-less parties, such as individuals and firms that

do not know each other, to engage in near frictionless peer-to-peer transactions. Blockchains can

therefore serve as a transparent bookkeeping machine that everyone can inspect (public and

permissionless blockchains) or a limited group of people can inspect (private and federated

blockchains). This type of transparency has applications (1) along the supply chain of good and

services, (2) in institutional settings, for less corruption and more accountability.

Blockchain: Transparency & Trust

Blockchain is sometimes positioned as a disruptor to governments, or described in the context of

enabling anonymous sales of illegal materials. However, smart regulators and government

officials have realized that blockchain, just like all tools, properly governed in the interest of our

society, holds the potential for great benefit.

Governments have already discovered several strong use cases for blockchains; property paper

land titles are one example. When Haiti was hit by the 2010 earthquake, the municipal buildings

containing paper records such as land titles were destroyed. This is a prime example of a

vulnerable, single-point-of-failure system. Moving paper records to decentralized blockchains, and

attaching ownership of assets to people’s blockchain-based identities put governments in a far

better position to preserve citizens’ claims to assets, increasing confidence in those governments

and economies. Many governments store all their data in centralized databases which leave them

open to human errors, accidents, and tampering. If these agencies coordinate and create

blockchain-based shared source of truth resources, that allows agencies to eliminate redundancies

and spend taxpayer funds more efficiently. Those shared data pools allow governments to create

higher-quality models enabling them to better serve public interests. If every decision an agency

makes is tracked to individual employees’ or groups’ blockchain-based identities, it makes for easy

audits and excellent tracking in case of an error to determine how a process went wrong.

BCH – 2018 Orientation Sessions:

Orientation Session I

Title: Blockchain Technology Insights, Ideas to Building Systems

Speaker: Mr. Jamshaid Iqbal Janjua

Abstract: Blockchain is a secure, shared, distributed ledger. Traditional ledgers are centralized

and use third parties and middlemen to approve and record transactions. Blockchain safely

distributes ledgers across the entire network and does not require any middleman. There is massive

opportunity to improve shared business processes using blockchain by storing of digital records,

by exchanging of digital assets and by recording & execution of smart contracts. Here question

arises that how do I build with blockchain? So, there are 4 key questions when starting any

blockchain project.

Orientation Session II

Title: What is Ethereum? The Most Comprehensive Beginners Guide

Speaker: Mr. Junaid Mushtaq

Abstract: Ethereum’s core innovation, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a Turing

complete software that runs on the Ethereum network. It enables anyone to run any program,

regardless of the programming language given enough time and memory. Ethereum enables

developers to build and deploy decentralized applications. A decentralized application or Dapp

serve some particular purpose to its users. Bitcoin, for example, is a Dapp that provides its users

with a peer to peer electronic cash system that enables online Bitcoin payments. Because

decentralized applications are made up of code that runs on a blockchain network, they are not

controlled by any individual or central entity.

Orientation Session III

Title: Blockchain Development – IBM Developer (HyperLedger)

Speaker: Mr. Qasid Labeed

Abstract: Hyperledger Fabric is one of the blockchain projects within Hyperledger. Like other

blockchain technologies, it has a ledger, uses smart contracts, and is a system by which participants

manage their transactions. Hyperledger Fabric has a ledger subsystem comprising two

components: the world state and the transaction log. Each participant has a copy of the ledger to

every Hyperledger Fabric network they belong to. Smart contracts are written in chaincode and

are invoked by an application external to the blockchain when that application needs to interact

with the ledger. In most cases, chaincode interacts only with the database component of the ledger,

the world state (querying it, for example), and not the transaction log.

Orientation Session IV

Title: Blockchain Development – Ethereum platform

Speaker: Mr. Zaid Munir

Abstract: To a beginner, the entire concept of Ethereum and Ethereum token can get very

confusing very fast. The idea that Ethereum not only has its own currency (Ether) but also has

tokens on top of that which can act as currency themselves, can be a little mind-boggling. The

entire Ethereum network is a giant mass of nodes (computers) connected to one another. In fact,

the entire network can be visualized as a single entity called the “Ethereum Virtual Machine” or

EVM for short. All the transactions that have happened and will ever happen in this network are

automatically updated and recorded in an open and distributed ledger.

12th IEEE ICOSST - 2018

Session II (Day 2)

Track 4

Title: Role of Data Modeling, Blockchain and Big Data Analytics towards monitoring and

management of Big Data Applications

Speaker: Dr. Omair Shafique

Abstract: Data Modelling, Blockchain and Big Data Analytics play a very important role in the

monitoring and management of large-scale software applications. In the past, monitoring and

management of software applications have always been complex tasks, especially because

execution data is logged in software applications in an unstructured and human-readable manner.

This makes the process of monitoring and management limited, requires manual interpretation and

makes the process of monitoring and management to be slow, cumbersome and hard. This talk will

present an overview of our proposed solution of data modelling, blockchain, and big data analytics-

based techniques to improve monitoring and management processes for emerging large-scale,

complex and data-intensive software applications (also known as big data applications).

Title: Building Scalable, Secure and Robust, Production-Ready Blockchain Applications Based

on Hyperledger Fabric

Speaker: Zaid Munir

Abstract: Most foreseeable use cases for Blockchain work at scale and bring with it a set of

associated production challenges. In this talk the author would discuss a few particular design

decisions taken by some well-known DLT and Blockchain solutions available and try to impress

the point why they are inherently meant to work at large scales. Then presenter would briefly

discuss some of the important projects incubated under the open source Hyperledger project

relevant to prototyping and production. Following this there would be a deep dive into taking a

Hyperledger Fabric project to production; this part would cover tools, technologies and the skill

set required for moving to a production environment. And how to tackle the challenges of

delivering a scalable, secure and robust end product.

Title: Role of AI in Emerging Networks: 5G and Beyond

Speaker: Dr. Ali Imran

Abstract: The talk will address the answers to following questions: What are the limitations of

the current automation approaches in cellular network operation and optimization? Why classic

machine learning alone cannot address these limitations? Can a certain type of AI help address

these limitations and enable truly deep network automation? How an advanced AI can help do

what humans cannot do in terms of network optimization? The talk will conclude with insights

from recent case studies.

Title: Intelligent Transportation System

Speaker: Dr. Waqar ul Qunain

Abstract: Effective means of transportation are fundamental requirement for suitable growth of

today’s world. Education, health, energy, commerce, in short, every sector, one way or another is

connected to the transportation. All modes of transportation are important for modern society,

however, the road transportation in urban areas is extremely significant as a huge mass directly

engage and get affected by it daily. Effective management of the road transportation is the need of

hour, as failing to do so may have extremely adverse effects on quality of life, economy, and life

expectancy. As per World Health Organization (WHO), worldwide, about 1.25 million people die

in road accidents per year. If the trend prevails then these traffic accidents will be 7th leading cause

of death by 2030 in the world. In last twelve years the data collected by the Rescue 1122 emergency

service of Punjab, Pakistan, shows that around 1.28 million accidents occurred in 36 major districts

of Punjab province. Besides human loss, road accidents also cause an enormous financial bearing,

which is on average up to five percent of national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in a developing

country. Being a developing country, Pakistan needs an immediate initiative to cut such huge

financial bearing and to meet global and locally required targets which are set in the United

Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals 2030. Artificial Intelligence may play a vital role in

addressing challenges of the road transportation. Road transportation could be broadly categorized

in two classes namely traffic and infrastructure. On traffic side there are major four areas where

AI applications are being developed namely autonomous vehicles, vehicle maintenance, advance

driver support systems (ADAS) and modeling of drivers. On infrastructure end, there are two

major areas where AI applications are being made namely engineering and management of the

road infrastructure. The engineering applications focus on autonomous design and optimization of

road network whereas management applications focus on autonomous traffic flow control, law

enforcement and policy design using social simulation. All these applications are highly inter-

related and complement each other which are collectively called as the “intelligent transportation

systems (ITS)”. This talk will cover state-of-the-art of ITS, its local initiatives and opportunities.

also answered the queries of the students regarding power generation.

Bagasse is often used as a primary fuel source for sugar mills. When burned in quantity, it produces

sufficient heat energy to supply all the needs of a typical sugar mill, with energy to spare. To this

end, a secondary use for this waste product is in cogeneration, the use of a fuel source to provide

both heat energy, in the mill, and electricity, which is typically sold on to the consumer electrical

grid.

The control room was based on latest technology DCS (A distributed control system is a control

system for a process of plant). The visit concluded by the afternoon. The industrial visit to Descon

Cogeneration Power Plant was an enriching experience for students in getting live exposure of

power generation which can help them in their internships and further career enhancements.

All the Staff members and Students are highly thankful to Descon Power Solutions (PVT.) Limited

for providing such an opportunity for the visit and hospitality.

Traditional ledgers are centralized and use third

parties and middlemen to approve and record transactions. Blockchain safely distributes ledgers across the

entire network and does not require any middleman. There is massive opportunity to improve shared business

processes using blockchain by storing of digital records, by exchanging of digital assets and by recording &

execution of smart contracts. Here question arises that how do I build with blockchain? So, there are 4 key

questions when starting any blockchain project.

Orientation Session II

Title: What is Ethereum? The Most Comprehensive Beginners Guide

Speaker: Mr. Junaid Mushtaq

Abstract: Ethereum’s core innovation, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is a Turing complete software

that runs on the Ethereum network. It enables anyone to run any program, regardless of the programming

language given enough time and memory. Ethereum enables developers to build and deploy decentralized

applications. A decentralized application or Dapp serve some particular purpose to its users. Bitcoin, for

example, is a Dapp that provides its users with a peer to peer electronic cash system that enables online Bitcoin

payments. Because decentralized applications are made up of code that runs on a blockchain network, they

are not controlled by any individual or central entity.

Orientation Session III

Title: Blockchain Development – IBM Developer (HyperLedger)

Speaker: Mr. Qasid Labeed

Abstract: Hyperledger Fabric is one of the blockchain projects within Hyperledger. Like other blockchain

technologies, it has a ledger, uses smart contracts, and is a system by which participants manage their

transactions. Hyperledger Fabric has a ledger subsystem comprising two components: the world state and

the transaction log. Each participant has a copy of the ledger to every Hyperledger Fabric network they belong

to. Smart contracts are written in chaincode and are invoked by an application external to the blockchain when

that application needs to interact with the ledger. In most cases, chaincode interacts only with the database

component of the ledger, the world state (querying it, for example), and not the transaction log.

Orientation Session IV

Title: Blockchain Development – Ethereum platform

Speaker: Mr. Zaid Munir

Abstract: To a beginner, the entire concept of Ethereum and Ethereum token can get very confusing very

fast. The idea that Ethereum not only has its own currency (Ether) but also has tokens on top of that which

can act as currency themselves, can be a little mind-boggling. The entire Ethereum network is a giant mass of

nodes (computers) connected to one another. In fact, the entire network can be visualized as a single entity

called the “Ethereum Virtual Machine” or EVM for short. All the transactions that have happened and will

ever happen in this network are automatically updated and recorded in an open and distributed ledger.

12th IEEE ICOSST - 2018

Session I

Track I

Blockchain: The information technology of the future

Speaker: Dr. Muzammil Shahbaz

Abstract: Blockchain is getting a strong momentum in transforming the modern information technology

systems. Cryptocurrencies are merely one application of the blockchain concept. The horizon is endless and

virtually all types of transactions of assets can be implemented through blockchain procedures. In this talk,

we shall give a brief overlook on the evolution of blockchain in a historical perspective and its current

industrial status. We shall also see how the current most successful implementation of blockchain works by

illustrating the less-understood concept of proof-of-work, its core ideas and design. Finally, we shall look at

problems and possible avenues of research in this domain.

Blockchain and the Internet of Things – Gap

Speaker: Dr. Shahid Raza

Abstract: The future Internet will be an IPv6 network interconnecting traditional computers and a large

number of smart objects or networks. This Internet of Things (IoT) will be the foundation of many services

and our daily life will depend on its availability and reliable operations. IoT and Blockchain are two of the

most hyped technologies. Though both technologies have their own strong spheres, their integration is

envisioned as even more fascinating. This is true in many but not in all cases. The overemployment of

Blockchain and its meaningless integration in many use cases is counterproductive. In addition to a few IoT-

specific use cases (supply chain, healthcare, smart industry, etc.) Blockchain is largely targeted at enhancing

IoT cybersecurity and democratic incorporation of IoT devices into ICT ecosystems. This talk will cover the

integration of IoT and Blockchain and critically discuss different blockchain technologies targeted for IoT. It

will also cover opportunities and research challenges in the IoT and Blockchain domains. A part of this talk

will also cover cybersecurity research at the RISE Research Institutes of Sweden.

Best Open Source Platforms for developing Blockchain Application

Speaker: Mudaser Iqbal

Abstract: Since the phenomenal rise in the value of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, which uses blockchain for

accounting, there has been a tremendous interest in blockchain technology. Blockchain is not only anchored

in financial use cases but has found its ways in almost every business domain of the modern world. From the

supply chain industry to elections and health care, Blockchain is revolutionizing the way businesses interact

and is termed as 5th evolution of computing. A blockchain is a data structure that makes it possible to create

a digital ledger of data and share it among a network of independent parties. Blockchain has been assumed to

cause potential cost saving for banks, health industry, supply chain, and many others. One of the reasons why

blockchain enjoys a top position in upcoming technologies depends on its open source nature. Being open

source helps the platform to grow exponentially as well as keeps the community up to date. A number of

commercial and open source platforms provide the framework for creating applications that support a

blockchain. For easy and quick blockchain app development, there are various open source platforms

available including Ethereum, Hyperledger, HydraChain, MultiChain etc. which makes development of

DApps and other blockchain use cases comparatively easier.

Roundtable:

Title: Opportunities in Blockchain

Moderator: Mr. Jamshaid Iqbal Janjua

Abstract: A Roundtable talk between industry and academia on the topic of “Opportunities in Blockchain”

was conducted at Vice Chancellor’s Office. Dr. Waqar Mehmood, Director KICS UET Lahore, chaired the

panel discussion. Moderator Mr. Jamshaid Iqbal from KICS UET Lahore encouraged the panelists to define

a roadmap that expedites the future in Blockchain technologies. Mr. Nahil, CEO of Delta-Tech, also showed

his interest in collaborating with KICS UET to develop products in Block Chain. Panelists delivered their

valuable recommendations to spread awareness of this fast accepting technology in the world.

Session II (Day 2)

Track 3

Autoencoders and LSTM for Multi-Class Anomaly Detection

Speaker: Dr. Tariq Mahmood

Abstract: Insider Threats and Suspicious Activities are plaguing all important corporate domains. For

instance, banking frauds and cyber threats are a major source of concern for both customers and service

providers. Many techniques based on machine learning have been used to detect such anomalous or fraudulent

activities. In this talk, we will discuss the performance of two deep learning approaches, specifically

Autoencoders and Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) for anomaly detection. We focus on multi-class

classification of more than 20 classes of anomalies/frauds. We will discuss the results of experiments and

draw our conclusions on the positives and caveats of both algorithms.

Personal Monitoring to Support Workers in Hazardous Industries

Speaker: Dr. Annika Hinze

Abstract: Wearable personal monitoring devices are increasingly being considered by employers to address

worker safety in hazardous environments. Although large-scale laboratory studies show correlations between

activity, physiological data and fatigue, there is little evidence that these can be accurately identified using

wearable technology in the workplace. IoT technology is promising but its use in rugged outdoor environments

is challenged by lack of power, reliable communication and possible interference. Contextual factors are

typically missing from data collected by wearable technology; without this information, predictions of

risk/fatigue may be misleading or inaccurate. The personal nature of the data collected and its proposed use

to monitor workers leads to both ethical and cultural challenges. This talk will introduce our innovative and

ethical wearable monitoring approach that explores data that can be reliably captured from workers using

wearable technology. Issues of data privacy, reliability, and worker persuasion will be discussed.

ASSEMBLE: A Service Mapping Approach for Collaborative Business Process Development

Speaker: Dr. Basit Shafique

Abstract: Business Process (BP) development is a challenging task for small and medium organizations who

do not have sufficient resources for design, coding, and management of their BPs. Cloud infrastructure and

service-oriented middleware can be leveraged for rapid development and deployment of BPs of such

organizations. BP development in the cloud-based environment can be done collaboratively by exploiting the

knowledge of existing BPs of related organizations. However, syntactic and semantic heterogeneity among

the Web service operations of BPs across organizations is a major obstacle to such collaborative BP

development. In this talk, he will discuss our proposed approach for collaborative BP development. Our

proposed approach, called ASSEMBLE, utilizes the attribute, structural and semantics information of service

operations of existing BPs in a given domain to help a user organization to compose its BP. Given a collection

of related BPs and available service operations of a user organization, ASSEMBLE computes a mapping

between service operations of the user organization and BP operations of other organizations. ASSEMBLE

also generates the executable BP code in standard BPEL language, which can be deployed on any process

execution engine on the user organization’s site or on the cloud.

Session III (Day 3)

Track 5

What is the role of V2X communications for C-ITS-current status and future implications?

Speaker: Dr. Taimoor Abbas

Autoencoders and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) for anomaly detection. We focus on multi-class

classification of more than 20 classes of anomalies/frauds. We will discuss the results of experiments and
