It is our great pleasure to share the news of achieving past awards for the ComSoc Kolkata chapter like CAA 2005, ComSoc Chapter of the Year Award (CoY 2008) under the leadership of the founder Chair Prof. Debasish Saha, CAA 2010 under the chairmanship of Dr. Swarup Mandal, CAA-2014 and CAA-2015 under the Chairmanship of Prof. Iti Saha Misra. A. IEEE 5G Summit: Year 2017 was significant in hosting the international IEEE 5G Summit first time in Kolkata under the leadership of ComSoc Kolkata Chapter.

IEEE Int. 5G Summit and 28th GISFI Standardization Series Meeting (GSSM) has been held during March 17-18, 2017 at SENSES Hotel, Sector V, Salt Lake, Kolkata- 700091, India, on the theme of Digital India. The program organized by IEEE ComSoc Kolkata Chapter jointly with IEEE CAS Kolkata Chapter in which ComSoc Kolkata Chapter Chair Prof. Iti Saha Misra of Jadavpur University took the entire responsibility as a General Chair. Prof. Suvra Sekhar Das from IIT Kharagpur was the program Co-Chair, Mr. Pallab Ganguly of CESC Pvt. Ltd did his excellent job as an Industry Interface whereas Prof. Salil Kumar Sanyal, CAS Chair of Kolkata Section served as the Finance Chair.

It was our pleasure to work with Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, IEEE 5G Initiative Co-Chair, Lead Member of Technical Staff, AT&T, USA and Prof. Ramjee Prasad, Founder Chair -GISFI, Founder President - CTIF Global Capsule (CGC), and Professor of Future Technologies for Business Ecosystem Innovation (FT4BI), Aarhus University, Denmark, without whom the program would not be so successful. The IEEE 5G summit in Kolkata was the 5th one in India attended by many big industry personnel and sponsored by CISCO, Ericsson, Webel (Govt. of West Bengal), Qualcomm, NI Polaris Network, RS Software, ISOAH, BSI etc.

In the first Keynote session Mr. Prakash Suthar, the Principal Architect based in US, CISCO, delivered on “5G Transforming Service Providers’ Business”, Mr. Indrajit Sanyal, Senior Director, Ericsson Global Services delivered on “5G - Out of the Labs and into the Neighbourhood”, Mr. Vinosh Babu James, Qualcomm India delivered on System aspects of Digital India – Requirements, Architecture and Standardization Status”. The other notable presentation in other sessions were made by Mr. Vinoy Gupta, CTO Polaris Networks on 'Innovations in Cellular Core Network for IoT and Machine Type Communications', Mr. Tarun Gupta, Business Development Manager, RF, National Instrument , India, on “Platform based approach for Prototyping 5G Research” and Mr. Sumit Misra, General Manager and Head of Technology Innovation, RS Software on “ Digital Payments”. These sessions were chaired by Prof. Debasish Dutta of IIT, KGP and Prof. Raja Kumar, Director, IIT Bhubaneswar.

Several other Invited talks were on “Spectrum Requirements for IoT Applications” by Dr. Ashok Chandra, Former Wireless Advisor, Govt. of India, “Applications 5.0 - Riding the 5G wave”, by Mr. Ravikiran Annaswamy, CEO, Innohabit Technologies Pvt Ltd Education Co-Chair, IEEE 5G Initiative and “MIMO in 5G” by M Chandrasekaran, Senior Research Engineer Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT).

There was a very interesting panel discussion session on “Security challenges with 5G technology- A Cross Industry View” moderated by Mr. Sandeep Sengupta- ISOAH Data Securities Pvt. Ltd. Among the panelist were Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, Mr. Sumit Poddar of CESC Kolkata, Dr. Sourav Dutta, IBM Kolkata, Mr. Rana Pratap Sircar- Director, GSI SDU IT & C, Head of Information, Ericsson Global Services, Gurgaon, and Nirupam Sen- Business Head (East), BSI Group India Pvt. Ltd.

The present PhD researcher were also the part of presentation and have drawn attraction of the participants in which the leading PhD scholars presented their thoughts on various aspects of 5G research including Intelligent Transport System, Cognitive Radio Aspects for 5G and Network Densification in 5G. The Session was chaired by Prof. Debashis Saha, IIM Calcuuta, the founder Chair of ComSoc Kolkata. The first day IEEE 5G Summit ended at 9.00 pm with cultural program followed by Gala Dinner. All total 170 participants were there in which 100 were the registered attendees mostly engineering students and young faculties.

B. Distinguished Lecturer Tour : DLT 2017

Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, DLT Speaker Part of the Audience of the DLT DLT Speaker: Prof. Dr. Ashutosh Dutta, Lead Member of Technical Staff at AT&T’s Chief Security Office in Middletown, New Jersey, USA, has delivered the DLT program on 16 March 2016 at the Seminar Hall, SMCC, Salk Lake Campus, Jadavpur University. The lecture went on for 1 hr 30 mins from 2.30 pm to 4.00 pm on the topic of "Security Challenges and Opportunities in SDN/NFV and 5G Networks”. There were 35 attendees from academia and industry. Dr. Dutta narrated nicely the various aspects of security challenges in the upcoming 5G technology. ComSoc Chair provided vote of thanks. C . IEEE ComSoc and CAS Industrial one day Seminar: On 15th Sep 2017 IEEE ComSoc and CAS Chapter organized the one day seminar bringing leading Industry researcher at the Electronics and Communication Department of Narula Institute of Technology. The theme of this industrial seminar was the “Advancement in Artificial Intelligence and Security “ – the two most important issues in present technology development. The keynote speakers of the day were Dr. Tapas Chakroborty, an experienced professional from TCS and Mr. Kanchan Mallick from XGEN security technology services in which ComSoc chapter hosted the seminar lecture on “Discussion on Connected

Threat Defence and fight against Targeted attacks” delivered by Mr. KANCHAN MALLICK , Regional Account Manager, TrendMicro India Private Ltd. Mr. Mallik is the Regional head for Eastern India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. Mr. Mallick has an experience of total 17+ years in the IT Security, Network security and Cyber security field especially in solution, Project planning and strategy making, Security consulting, Channel enablement for technical sales & Product positioning and other core areas of security.

The program started with a beautiful inaugural session graced by Principal, Dean, Registrar of the NIT and HOD of ECE of NIT along with the Chairs of CAS and ComSoc, Kolkata Chapters. Prof. Salil Kumar Sanyal, CAS Chair talked about IEEE where as Prof. Iti Saha Misra talked about the ComSoc activities , the local and global aspects. Among the participants there were about 60 students from 3rd year and 4th Year of ECE Department.

Mr. Kanchan Mallik presented the session interactively. Several questions and discussions were raised by the participants. Awareness for security is the most important thing in the cyber dependent world as Mr. Mallik said.

D. ComSoc One day Seminar with MSIT Student Branch Chapter: On 9th September 2017, IEEE ComSoc and its MSIT SBC organized a one day workshop on “WBAN, Neural Network and Cybersecurity” in association with IEEE GRSS Kolkata Section at Meghnad Saha Institute of Technology, at the Seminar Hall of ECE Department. The workshop provides a forum for exchange and share knowledge, experiences, best practices, and ideas related to current and emerging technologies in the area of future technology with community. The program started with the welcome note by respected Principal (MSIT) Prof. (Dr.) Tirthankar Datta, with the inspiring lecture by Prof. Dr. Iti Saha Misra, ComSoc Chair of Kolkata Section and Professor, Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Jadavpur University on Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN), Cognitive Radio (CR) and Internet of Things (IOT). The session ended with the future applications of WBAN on health system. It was very encouraging that the students of IEEE ComSoc MSIT SBC came forward to speak about their research and model developments. ComSoc lecture was hosted for Mr. Pallab Ganguly, Deputy Manager, CESC Ltd. on “Cyber Security for smart grid”. He spoke about the different types of cyber attack and their solutions. This inquisitive and enthusiastic session came to an end with a Vote Of Thanks by Dr. Chandi Pani,

E. Participation on IEEE 5G Summit at Bhubaneswar: ComSoc Kolkata Chapter actively was the part of 6th IEEE 5G Summit and 29 th GISFI meeting series at SOA university, Bhubaneswar on 17-18 August, 2017. ComSoc chair delivered an invited lecture on the topic “Cognitive Radio a suitable Choice for IOT enabled WBAN Applications”. The ComSoc dedicated lecture was delivered by Mr. Sumit Misra, Technology Head, Innovation and Practice, RS Software, Kolkata on “Frequent-pattern detection in data-stream for real life business decisions” for 5G Summit on 18th Dec, pre-lunch session.

F. IEEE ComSoC Outreach Program:

This year, two outreach programs from Kolkata Chapter were held at NIT Shilchar and Veer Surendra Sai University, Sidhipur, Burla, Sambalpur, Orrisa, both at the ECE Department. Like the previous years, ComSoc Chairperson Prof. Iti Saha Misra took the opportunity of organizing IEEE programs when she was invited by the Institute for the academic programs as external examiner. It helps to save both time and the cost for travel and other expenses.

1. On May 5th 2017, at the ECE Department of NIT Shilchar, IEEE ComSoc membership aware program was held followed by motivational lecture to join IEEE. As an outcome few ComSoc members and a student branch will open in 2018.

2. On May 19 2017 ComSoc Chairperson was Invited for the QIP Faculty Development Program on "Recent trends in antenna analysis and design" where about 40 fuculties at Asst. Prof. and Assoc. Prof. level from different Institutes attented the program. She delivered three hours lecture on “Antenna :Fundamentals and Evolution for Mobile Communication”. There were only 7 IEEE members. At the end of the lecture, ComSoc Chairperson announed that this lecture was dedicated to ComSoc Lecture for Kolkata Section and then she talked about the chapter activities and the benefits of being the IEEE member. She also personaly talked to interested faculty members to join the IEEE and the society of their interest.

In 2017, ComSoc Kolkata Chapter organized the Social event (PICNIC) at the bank of River Ganges. Student volunteers enjoyed the day long playing cricket, Guiter and singing songs along with lunch at the restaurant of Punyalakshi Resort.

G. Attending the ComSoc Asia pacific Chapter Chair Meet at Singapore and The Award Ceremony at

Globecom Luncheon on 5th Dec 2017:

Chapter Chair Prof. Iti Saha Misra has attended the Asia Pacific Regional Chapter Chair Meet at Singapore, Hotel Marina Bay Sands on Dec 3 and 4 , 2017 to share the activities and plan for the future ComSoc growth. Chairperson has delivered on Kolkata chapter activities to get the CAA award and received the applause and praise for our activities. On 5th Dec Chapter Chair also has received the CAA 2017 award at IEEE Globecom Luncheon.

H. Attending the WIE Mini conference: At IEEE ANT-2017 on 18 th December 2017 at C.V. Raman College of Engineering, Bhubaneswar Odisha. ComSoc Chairperson was invited to be the part of the ANT-2017 activities particularly in the WIE Mini Conference which is the special event of ANT started from 2015. Prof. Iti Saha Misra accordingly helped the organizing members in formalizing the event and delivered special invited talk on the topic “Cognitive Radio: A prospect for 5G Communication and IOT services”. She also talked about the IEEE WIE Kolkata Section, being the founding Chairperson and discussed the significance of special thrust of such WIE programs.
