Recent Trends and Enabling Technologies in RF and Microwaves by Dr. K. R. Suresh Nair, CTO, NeST Group, Cochin This talk will emphasise more on practical aspects of RF and Microwave systems, filled with case studies. After introducing the basic concepts like Spectrum bands, Return Loss, Insertion Loss, S Parameters, etc, two real life system designs will be undertaken. The first one will be a near range RF system; the second one will be long range system. RF over Fiber is a new concept with variety of applications, and a real life case study will be presented. A variety of devices including power splitters, phase shifters, antennas, designed for Health care applications, Communication applications covering 802.11 b,g,n shall be explained. Then talk will conclude with explaining the physical concepts of Radar principles and a case study will be presented on an atmospheric radar.

Dr. Suresh Nair, alumni of Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Bombay has spent his initial career with SAMEER, Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India and later shifted to NeST, a multi-national private industry as Chief Technology Officer. He has designed developed many novel products and many are finding excellent market acceptance globally. Dr.Suresh is also the founder of Innobreeze Technologies, a company concentrating on development of bio-photonics based healthcare devices. He is also consultant to many other companies. Dr.Suresh has more than 85 publications, 10 patents, co-authored one book and more than 150 technical reports to his credit. He has been conferred with many awards. He is member in many of the Government Committees, University boards, Fellow and member in various professional associations. His passion is to mentor youngsters as entrepreneurs. Dr.Suresh is currently the Chair of IEEE Kochi Subsection.

Antennas for Defense Applications by Dr. Dhananjay Jahagirdhar, Scientist F, RCI, DRDO, Hyderabad The antennas are a very basic electromagnetic sensor element in any communication and radar system. Though it sounds old, antennas continues to be as evolving and engrossing since inception. The spectrum of applications is very wide. This talk covers certain feature for chosen applications in defense. The talk will illustrate antennas utilized for ground as well as airborne tracking applications, secure on-board communications, proximity sensors, GPS applications and radar seekers. The talk will also project some futuristic trends.

Dr. D. R. Jahagirdar received his B.E. degree in Electronics Engineering in 1990, from Govt. College of Engineering, Amravati University, Maharashtra, India. He received M.Tech. in Microwave

  • Engineering in 1992, from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, West Bengal, India. He was a Research Assistant at Sponsored Research and Industrial Consultancy at IIT, Kharagpur. Later, he joined Antenna Products Division of Electronics Corporation of India Ltd, (ECIL) Hyderabad. In 1994, He received scholarship from the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, UK to pursue PhD. He obtained Ph.D. in 1997 from the Department of Electronics and Computer Science, University of Southampton, UK. After returning to India, He joined Research Center Imarat, DRDO, Hyderabad in May 2000 and continuing there as a scientist. He has won 'Best Paper Award' at the third IEEE High-Frequency Postgraduate Student Colloquium 1997 at the University of Leeds, UK organized by IEEE UKRI section. He also received Prof. S.K. Mitra memorial award for 'Best research oriented paper' from IETE, India in 2002. He has received IETE-IRSI Young Scientist Award at International Radar Symposium 2005 at Bangalore, India. He received Laboratory scientist of the year award 2007 in RCI. He received DRDO scientist of the year award in 2010 from Hon Prime-minister of India. He has designed variety of antennas for missile applications in DRDO. His area of interest is microwave and millimeter-wave antennas for communications and defense applications. He has 40 publications to his credits in national and international journals and conferences. He is a senior member of IEEE. He is also a fellow of IETE. He is past-Chair of IEEE MTT-AP-EMC society, Hyderabad Chapter. Antenna Tuning by Ms. Sheela M. Krishnaswami, RF Consultant, Chennai Antenna tuners are becoming integral part of mobile terminals. The impedance of antenna changes not only with frequency but also due to effect of users head and hand and the presence of large conductive surfaces nearby the device. Any impedance mismatch between the RF frontend and antenna would mean loss in power transmitted and received, resulting in slow download or call drop. An adaptive antenna tuner senses impedance mismatch and makes the necessary correction in real time. In this talk an analysis of tuneable impedance networks is presented and the architecture of an adaptive antenna tuner is outlined.

Ms. Sheela M. Krishnaswami received her B.E. (Honours) in ECE and M.E. in Applied Electronics from College of Engineering, Guindy, Madras and M.Eng (Research degree) from National University of Singapore. She has specialized in RF/Microwave circuits and EMC. In the past 30 years she has held R&D positions at ISRO Satellite Center, SAMEER, Tait Electronics, NZ, Lucent Technologies, USA Andrew Corporation, USA and C-DOT Alcatel Lucent Research Center. She has served as Professor-ECE at Saranathan College of Engineering, Trichy, Mandsaur Institute of Technology, Mandsaur and Meenakshi College of Engineering, Chennai. She has designed RF/Microwave circuits for terrestrial microwave link, satellite transmitter; VHF/UHF land mobile radio, WCDMA base station and WiMAX CPE applications. She works as an independent RF consultant now.

  • Metamaterials and their applications in Electromagnetics by Dr. P.H. Rao, SAMEER Centre for Electromagnetics, Chennai The talk will introduce the basic concepts of metamaterials with physical insight into the unusual properties of these configurations. Loaded distributed transmission line configurations and planar split ring resonators (SRR) and their complementary structures will be discussed. The equivalent circuit concepts of planar SRRs and CSRRs will be highlighted. Applications of these special configurations in realizing dual band and multiband circuits/radiators, out of band rejections and band notch characteristics will be discussed. A special approach towards miniaturization of planar circuits will be introduced. Few practically developed circuits will be demonstrated with measured results. Dr. Patnam H. Rao has more than 25 yrs of Research experience in Antennas development. After working for 2 years in the Space Applications Centre, ISRO, Ahmedabad, he joined SAMEER- Centre for Electromagnetics, Chennai in 1990 and has since been continuing there. During his stay at ISRO he was involved in the design and development of slotted array antennas for space applications.
