IEEE AP-MTT Columbus Chapter Seminar: Date: 9:30-10:30AM Monday, February 11, 2013 Place: MRC Conference Room, ElectroScience Laboratory, 1330 Kinnear Rd, Columbus, OH Bio: Dr. Gurel is a Director in the MOT Research Center / CTO Office at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT). He also holds an academic appointment as a Visiting Professor at the Samsung Advanced Institute for Health Sciences and Technology (SAIHST) of SungKyunKwan University. Previously he was VP & Medical Director at Sg2 and an Associate at Booz, Allen & Hamilton where he consulted for both large and small clients spanning the healthcare services, health insurance, biopharma and medical device sectors. Holding an M.D. (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, Dr. Gurel earned a B.A. cum laude in Biochemical Sciences from Harvard University where he conducted research on DNA structure (with Martin Karplus). After graduating, he was a Visiting Researcher at the Institut Laue-Langevin researching neutron diffraction-based analyses of membrane proteins in Prof. Guiseppe Zaccai’s group. Dr. Gurel also holds an M.Phil (Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics) from Columbia where worked x-ray crystallographic structural studies of cytokines with Prof. Wayne Hendrickson. He has also conducted computer science research, winning 3rd place in the Westinghouse Science Talent Search for work on microprocessor software development systems, followed by robot programming systems work at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center (Dr. Russell Taylor) and at Harvard’s Aiken Computation Laboratory (with the late Prof. Thomas E. Cheatham). Dr. Gurel has taught a number of subjects—cellular and molecular biology, neuroanatomy, bioinformatics and mathematical modeling—at several universities including the Columbia, Roosevelt University, Harvard, and SAIHST. His work has been published in the peer- reviewed scientific literature including the EMBO Journal, the Journal of Diabetes Science & Technology, Nanotechnology Law & Business, Lab-on-a-Chip, and the Journal of Molecular Biology.
