The*Purpose*of*BANKSETA’s*International*Executive*Development*Programmes*

The!BANKSETA!International!Executive!Development!Programme!(IEDP)!is!designed!to!

compliment!the!existing!Executive!Development!Programmes!implemented!by!employers!in!the!

Banking!and!Microfinance!Sector.!!This!fully!funded!programme!adds!a!South!African,!African!

and!International!perspective!to!the!development!of!high!potential!senior!managers.!

The!programme!creates!an!opportunity!for!senior!managers,!who!have!been!identified!by!their!

employers!as!having!high!potential,!to!engage!in!a!learning!development!opportunity.!!Time!will!

be!spent!with!senior!executives!of!the!companies!that!will!be!visited,!as!well!as!formal!learning!

with!business!school!faculty!operating!in!the!host!countries.!

Participants!will!also!have!the!opportunity!to!interact!with!other!financial!organisations!and!

business!whilst!researching!and!developing!a!business!case!topic!for!presentation!to!both!host!

country!senior!executives!and!a!panel!drawn!from!amongst!senior!executives!of!South!African!

financial!services!organizations.!

Acceptance!to!the!programme!is!subject!to!the!formal!selection!process!and!confirmation!of!

acceptance!by!the!BANKSETA!Management!Development!Committee!(MDC).!

Irrespective!of!the!host!destinations!(in!this!instance!either,!London,!United!Kingdom!or!New!

York,!United!States!including!African!destinations),!this!Leadership!Programme!is!very!intensive.!!

Participants!will!require!the!commitment!of!personal!time!as!well!as!time!away!from!home!and!

office!whilst!on!the!programme.!!A!significant!amount!of!time!will!also!be!devoted!to!afterhours!

syndicate!work.!

BANKSETAQregistered!employers!will!be!requested!to!identify!and!screen!from!the!existing!

talent!pool,!those!high!potential!candidates!who!are!currently!in!senior!management!positions!

and!who!have!the!potential!to!be!or!will!be!appointed!to!senior!executives!within!a!two!or!

three!year!period.!!!

Process:)• Once!the!potential!candidate!has!been!identified,!the!Employer!Representative!will!enter!

feedback!questionnaire;!

• The!Employer!Representatives!need!to!organise!the!formation!of!the!interview!panel!

• Interviews!must!take!place!between!19!to!28!October2011.!!!

• Candidates!will!need!to!complete!the!online!Case!Study!Analysis!during!the!week!of!24!to!

28!October!2011.!!This!will!be!a!TIMED!ASSESSMENT.!!! !

Requirements)for)the)successful)participants)Each!participant!will!be!expected!to:!

• Have!a!valid!South!African!passport;!

• Fully!participate!in!all!programme!activities.!!The!attendance!is!compulsory!and!none!of!

the!elements!are!optional;!

• Work!in!a!syndicate!group!to!scope!the!research!to!be!undertaken!both!locally!and!

internationally.!!Attend!and!participate!in!meetings!related!to!the!research!and!deliver!

the!research!paper!and!presentation!in!the!format!prescribed!by!the!local!business!

schools;!

• Refine!the!approach!to!the!business!case!by!meeting!as!agreed!between!syndicate!

members;!

• Plan!for!and!undertake!local!research!into!the!business!case!topic!allocated,!crafted!by!

the!syndicate,!before!departure!to!the!host!countries;!

• Participate!in!social!and!business!functions!as!an!ambassador!for!South!Africa,!the!South!

African!banking!and!Microfinance!industry!and!BANKSETA;!

• Complete,!within!the!agreed!timeframes,!all!assignments!required!by!the!programme!

both!in!South!Africa!and!in!the!host!countries;!

• Complete!evaluation!forms!and!contribute!to!feedback!sessions!throughout!the!

programme;!and!

• Formally!present!the!business!case!to!senior!executive!panels!in!both!the!host!countries!

and!South!Africa.!

Final!nomination!of!the!programme!does!not!guarantee!selection!onto!the!Programme.!!The!

BANKSETA!MDC!will,!when!finalising!the!list!of!successful!candidates!be!guided!by!the!

following:!

• Assessment!reports!on!each!nominee;!

• The!abovementioned!required!documentation;!

This!development!opportunity!should!meet!a!skills!need!identified!in!the!nominee’s!Personal!

Development!Plan,!as!well!as!to!the!business.!

Selection!for!attendance!on!this!programme!will!be!a!confirmation!that!the!nominee!is!to!be!

developed!for!accelerated!promotion!within!the!organisation!and!that!their!development!is!

being!actively!managed!by!their!employer.!

Action*Learning*Project*(ALP)*A!key!element!of!the!IEDP!is!to!engage!with!a!syndicate!group!in!researching!and!developing!a!

business!case!for!a!topic!that!has!value!to!the!Banking!and!Microfinance!Sectors.!!The!purpose!

of!the!research!element!of!the!IEDP!is!to!present!the!findings!of!an!exhaustive!research!and!

learning!process!that!aims!to!provide!a!solution!to!the!research!question!developed!by!each!

syndicate.!!The!result!is!to!be!presented!in!the!form!of!a!comprehensive!written!report!and!a!

PowerPoint!presentation.!!Details!of!the!required!format!and!related!details!will!be!provided!

during!the!workshops!at!the!local!business!schools.!

Syndicates!will!work!with!a!topic!champion!and!a!coach!throughout!the!whole!programme.!!The!

final!research!document!is!to!be!delivered!to!the!BANKSETA!seven!days!prior!to!the!final!

presentation.!!Presentations!will!first!be!made!to!a!panel!of!experts!in!the!host!countries,!and!

finally!to!a!panel!of!senior!South!African!financial!services!experts.!

Personal*Development*Plan*Success!in!the!programme!will,!in!large!measure,!be!dependent!upon!the!extent!to!which!the!

participant!engages!with!his/her!line!manager!and!the!HR!support!within!the!organisation.!!

Expectations!from!all!parties!should!be!agreed!upQfront!and!signed!off.!

Reflection*and*Feedback*Sessions*All!participants!are!required!to!engage!in!sessions!to!provide!inQdepth!feedback.!!These!

meetings!also!serve!to!record!the!progress!of!the!programme!and!to!give!feedback!to!the!local!

business!schools!and!BANKSETA!on!how!to!improve!elements!contained!in!the!programme.!

project!presentation!and!graduation!day.!

Study!block!1!(5!days)!will!be!presented!with!a!South!African!Business!School.!!Study!block!2!(10!

days)!will!take!place!in!New!York!in!addition!to!4!days!traveling!and!socioQcultural!programme.!!

Study!Block!3!(5!days)!will!be!back!at!the!local!Business!School.!!Study!block!4!(4!days)!will!take!

place!in!Ghana,!Accra.!!The!themes!of!the!programme!will!be!weaved!through!all!four!!study!

blocks.!

Learning)Methodology)Building!on!the!use!of!high!level!faculty!and!the!action!learning!coaching!process,!as!well!as!the!

personal!leadership!coaching!process!and!cultural!programme,!the!local!business!school!will!

employ!the!following!methodologies!to!enhance!the!effectiveness!of!the!programme.!

Overview)of)the)programme)The!BANKSETA!IEDP!will!be!run!in!concurrence!with!a!local!and!international!business!school!in!

London!and!is!designed!to!fast!track!careers!of!participants!through!an!innovative!mix!of!peer!

to!peer!learning,!simulations,!Action!Learning!Projects!(ALP)!and!cutting!edge!leadership!

theories.!!The!modules!run!at!the!Business!School!in!London!will!provide!a!practical!insight!into!

various!aspects!of!banking!with!an!emphasis!on!Retail!Banking.!A!three!day!study!tour!to!

Kampala,!Uganda!will!provide!participants!with!an!understanding!of!the!opportunities!and!

challenges!facing!banks!in!this!country.!

The!local!and!international!Business!Schools!strive!to!turn!knowledge!into!action.!!To!this!end!

the!programme!has!a!strong!focus!on!the!individual!participant!and!includes!coaching!to!ensure!

that!goals!formulated!by!the!participants!on!the!programme!are!implemented!back!at!work.!

The!programme!promises!to!be!a!life!changing!experience!and!one!that!will!lay!the!foundation!

for!rapid!career!advancement.!

Local)Business)School)The!teaching!programme!is!very!interactive!with!extensive!use!made!of!case!studies!and!small!

group!work!to!promote!a!thorough!understanding!of!the!course!content.!!The!following!will!be!

Claw*Back*Principle*

The!BANKSETA!is!required!in!terms!of!the!Public!Finance!Management!Act!(PFMA)!to!ensure!

that!funds!allocated!are!accounted!for!including!recovery!of!funds!as!and!when!losses!occur.!

Participating!employers!will!on!a!prorated!basis!be!liable!to!pay!to!BANKSETA!all!losses!incurred!

as!s!result!of!drop!offs!from!the!programme!including!but!not!limited!to!resignations!specifically!

those!involving!movements!by!participants!to!careers!outside!the!banking!and!microfinance!

sector!in!South!Africa.!

It!is!within!this!context!that!BANKSETA!will!recover!from!employers!the!funds!and/or!costs!

incurred!due!to!non!completion!and/or!drop!off!of!its!candidate(s)!from!this!project.!!

All!participating!employers!will!as!such!be!required!to!sign!a!Memorandum!of!Agreement!with!
