School of Tech- nology wa asked to make a state- ment j concerning Dr Cooks probable discovery of the north Iole how it i was accomplished and if any Irrefu- table ¬ i evidence of the discovery could I be brought out said I Vhilo 1 am not in a position to speak authoritatively I know by I study and observation that the def- inite ¬ location of the pole is purely an astronomical problem Probably the surest method and the one used was to measure the orbit of the North or Zone star in its circuit about the pole within twentyfour hours There is no star directly over the pole or at least none visible save under a pow ¬ erful telescope It would be neces- sary ¬ terefme to take some large star such as the North star and measure its smallest orbit As to any Irrefutable evidence that Dr Cook could bring out to prove his contention that he had found the pole I know none Other explorers as they set forward their movements have loft some fixed mark to show where they had reached This I as snm Is the only thing Dr Cook could do Anti it Is presumed that once having established the location of the pole it would he ea = er in the future for Dr Cook or others to reach it If it is proven true tbpt he has found the pole he has won imperishable fame It te nlco stated that an observation showing no longitude and 90 degrees latitude would indicate the pole The Blood Is The Ufe Science has the presidents sum mons conveyed to him by the tele- phone Smith knoWn to his familiars I as Jimsy was a tall gaunt angular man bearing all over him the stamp of westerner He was in fact from Colorado where he began his active career by engaging in mining Scant i success attended his efforts in this dl rectiou however and after working I with the dogged determination that I was one of his traits until even his patience was exhausted be finally en- tered ¬ the employ of the steamship company In whose service he had I risen to his present position with hindquarters in New York There was something about Smith I that caused men and women also for I that matter to take to him on sight The unbounded good nature big heart wjpocc find unselfishness beaming In his blue eyes and In his whimsical smile were written In every line of his I Inn shaven face Another thing that I made him remarked by all who came In contact with him was his absolute Imperturbability In all his thirty seven years of existence he never had been known to get a move on1 not I even when a premature blast in a- mine bad sent the diggers belter skel ¬ ter for safety and carried death and suffering to many Smith bad walked I tranquilly away amid the rain of rock I and earth until it was all over Then he had returned and organized the work of res ue his placidity causing the ethers Instinctively to look to him I for direction Nor VEM his speech I more hurried than were his move- ments He spoke but little and then I his words came In a quiet even dis- tinct ¬ drawl But be got there as quickly as most men and n good deal quicker than some whose nerves were I highly strung and with whom rapidity of action was as necessary as breath- Ing 1 for he was possessed of keen pow ¬ ers of observation and common sense an earnestness of purpose that gave his utterances weight and an integrity as unshakable as the rock of Gibral- tar As a fitting almost necessary complement of such a nature be WHS endowed with a sense of humor ball added not n little to the attraction hEI exercised for those who knew him I sufficiently well to be able to appre- ciate his qualities of heart and mind He took a calm all embracing um y of the oiiice as he entered looked over to Brooks desk and saluted him with I a cordial motion of the hand and in structed a boy to notify Captain VII j Hams of his arrival He was ushered Immediately into the chiefs presence I That worthy who like his superin tendent was clean shaven was seated at his desk In his shirt sleeves antI the whol room despite the wide open windows was thick from the smoke from an old blackened corncob pipe at which be was pulling vigorously He was a burly man and the short thick I neck the broad shoulders the power- ful big Jointed lingers and the mus- cles ¬ that stood out in bunches on the hairy arms disclosed by his rolled ui shirt sleeves denoted that be possessed I unusual physical strength An ntzlyi- man to get into an argument with was Williams one who it needed no mind reader to judge would be capable of following the word with a blow that I would crush an ordinary opponent For years as Brooks had intimated be bad led tbe roughest life a man can lead hammering by sheer brute strength a way to wealth by ways in which scruple had counted for nothiu at all and expediency for a good deal and his entrance upon a higher plane of civilization had not imparted much polish to his appearance habits 01 speech which were those of the old time sailing ship mariner although of late years be had striven to conform more closely to the examples of re finement he witnessed In the only po- lite ¬ society he eared for which wa that of the family of his dead friend Stanley Harris who was general man ager of the LutinAmerican line whet he obtained control of IL He hid n way of gjaring at a person from un- der ¬ his busby eyebrows with a scni tiny that seemed to read through and up and down him and made him most Ill at ease under it He made his decisions promptly au- thoritatively ¬ after the manner of a man accustomed to command and tn be obeyed without question and br never changed them at least in his business and administrative dealings Artd to all this a vole like a foghorn the effect of which when he raiel- it was as he knew full well to make his subordinates quake and to intimi- date others who had to do with hint and It will be realized that he lived up- fully to his reputation of ling a hard man If For his quiet unmovabSe and thor- oughly capable dock superinlouden he entertained a certain respect He knew from experience that the man was not the least bit afraid or even disturbed by his bullying manner and his bellowing and that his glare al- ways ¬ squarely met had no more effect be brought out said I

Vhilo 1 am not in a position tospeak authoritatively I know by I

study and observation that the def-

location of the pole is purely anastronomical problem Probably thesurest method and the one used wasto measure the orbit of the North orZone star in its circuit about the polewithin twentyfour hours There isno star directly over the pole or atleast none visible save under a pow ¬

erful telescope It would be neces-sary

¬

terefme to take some largestar such as the North star andmeasure its smallest orbit

As to any Irrefutable evidence thatDr Cook could bring out to prove hiscontention that he had found thepole I know none Other explorersas they set forward their movementshave loft some fixed mark to showwhere they had reached This I assnm Is the only thing Dr Cook coulddo Anti it Is presumed that oncehaving established the location of thepole it would he ea = er in the futurefor Dr Cook or others to reach it Ifit is proven true tbpt he has foundthe pole he has won imperishablefame

It te nlco stated that an observationshowing no longitude and 90 degreeslatitude would indicate the pole

SMITH superintendent of i

JAMES Latin American Steamship j

docks bad arrived ipto the presidents sum

mons conveyed to him by the tele-phone Smith knoWn to his familiars I

as Jimsy was a tall gaunt angularman bearing all over him the stampof westerner He was in fact fromColorado where he began his activecareer by engaging in mining Scant i

success attended his efforts in this dlrectiou however and after working I

with the dogged determination thatI

was one of his traits until even hispatience was exhausted be finally en-

tered¬

the employ of the steamshipcompany In whose service he had I

risen to his present position withhindquarters in New York

There was something about Smith I

that caused men and women also forI

that matter to take to him on sightThe unbounded good nature big heartwjpocc find unselfishness beaming Inhis blue eyes and In his whimsicalsmile were written In every line of his I

Inn shaven face Another thing that I

made him remarked by all who cameIn contact with him was his absoluteImperturbability In all his thirtyseven years of existence he never hadbeen known to get a move on1 not I

even when a premature blast in a-

mine bad sent the diggers belter skel ¬

ter for safety and carried death andsuffering to many Smith bad walked I

tranquilly away amid the rain of rockI

and earth until it was all over Thenhe had returned and organized thework of res ue his placidity causingthe ethers Instinctively to look to him I

for direction Nor VEM his speechI

more hurried than were his move-ments He spoke but little and then I

his words came In a quiet even dis-tinct

¬

drawl But be got there asquickly as most men and n good dealquicker than some whose nerves were

Ihighly strung and with whom rapidityof action was as necessary as breath-Ing

1

for he was possessed of keen pow ¬

ers of observation and common sensean earnestness of purpose that gavehis utterances weight and an integrityas unshakable as the rock of Gibral-tar As a fitting almost necessarycomplement of such a nature be WHS

endowed with a sense of humor balladded not n little to the attraction hEIexercised for those who knew him

I

sufficiently well to be able to appre-ciate his qualities of heart and mind

He took a calm all embracing um y

of the oiiice as he entered looked overto Brooks desk and saluted him with

I

a cordial motion of the hand and instructed a boy to notify Captain VII j

Hams of his arrival He was usheredImmediately into the chiefs presence I

That worthy who like his superintendent was clean shaven was seatedat his desk In his shirt sleeves antIthe whol room despite the wide openwindows was thick from the smokefrom an old blackened corncob pipe atwhich be was pulling vigorously Hewas a burly man and the short thick

I

neck the broad shoulders the power-ful big Jointed lingers and the mus-

cles

¬

that stood out in bunches on thehairy arms disclosed by his rolled uishirt sleeves denoted that be possessed I

unusual physical strength An ntzlyi-

man to get into an argument with wasWilliams one who it needed no mindreader to judge would be capable offollowing the word with a blow that I

would crush an ordinary opponentFor years as Brooks had intimatedbe bad led tbe roughest life a mancan lead hammering by sheer brutestrength a way to wealth by ways inwhich scruple had counted for nothiuat all and expediency for a good dealand his entrance upon a higher planeof civilization had not imparted muchpolish to his appearance habits 01

speech which were those of the oldtime sailing ship mariner although oflate years be had striven to conformmore closely to the examples of refinement he witnessed In the only po-

lite¬

society he eared for which wathat of the family of his dead friendStanley Harris who was general manager of the LutinAmerican line whethe obtained control of IL He hid n

way of gjaring at a person from un-

der¬

his busby eyebrows with a scnitiny that seemed to read through andup and down him and made him mostIll at ease under it

He made his decisions promptly au-

thoritatively¬

after the manner of aman accustomed to command and tnbe obeyed without question and brnever changed them at least in hisbusiness and administrative dealingsArtd to all this a vole like a foghornthe effect of which when he raiel-it was as he knew full well to makehis subordinates quake and to intimi-date others who had to do with hintand It will be realized that he lived up-

fully to his reputation of ling a hardman If

For his quiet unmovabSe and thor-oughly capable dock superinlouden heentertained a certain respect Heknew from experience that the manwas not the least bit afraid or evendisturbed by his bullying manner andhis bellowing and that his glare al-

ways¬

squarely met had no more effect
