• The Battle of Shiloh was fought on April 6-7, 1862 in Shiloh, Tennessee. The battle is also known by the name of Pittsburg’s Landing. On the morning of April 6th, Confederate troops under General Albert Sidney Johnston attacked encamped Union troops under Ulysses Grant. The Confederate offensive took the Federal soldiers by surprise, but by the end of the first day, the Union troops, although pushed back, had not been defeated. As night fell, reinforcements arrived on the Tennessee River and on the next day, a Union counter-offensive drove the Confederates from the battlefield. Both sides suffered heavy losses. This was the first major battle of its magnitude in the Civil War.
