COMMENT: 20 percent market recovery in 24 months - "A robust foundation for the future" .............Page 4 A ccording to the most recent data released by ACEM, the Brussels based international motorcycle industry trade association (Association des Constructeurs Européens de Motocycles), total motorcycle and moped registrations combined increased by 5.6% in EU markets in 2015, to 1,210,534 units, with motorcycle registrations driving growth at +10.3 percent, 885,018 units. The largest PTW market was France with 242,885 units registered, although that is one of the few European markets were sales are still in decline at -3.4% compared to 2014. That said, the decline in motorcycle sales in France has stopped with the market there 'flat' for the year (actually -0.1 percent) at 153,239 units. That makes France Europe's second largest motorcycle market, with Italy the largest at 171,952 units, which is a healthy +9.9 percent over 2014. Total new PTW registrations in Italy were +6.3 percent (196,571 units). Germany is Europe's third largest market with 151,661 motorcycles registered (+7.1 percent) out of a total of 181,510 units (+3.2 percent). Spain is Europe's fourth largest motorcycle market, and fastest growing of the major markets in percentage terms, at +18.9 for the year (total PTWs sales there were +17.6 percent at 148,488 units), with the UK Europe's fifth largest market at 105,358 units, which is +15.5 percent growth over 2014 (total PTW registrations in the UK were +12.7 percent, 114,752 units). The trend towards more expensive larger displacement machines is good news for the manufacturers and their dealers, but the continuing weakness in the moped market remains a concern with EU-wide registrations (- 5.5 percent for the year at 325,516 units). The largest market for mopeds was France (89,646 mopeds, -8.7%), followed by The Netherlands (65,932 mopeds, +4.9%), Poland (30,430 mopeds, -25.3%), Germany (29,849 mopeds, -12.7%), and Italy (24,619 mopeds, -13.2%). Spain was the only large European market in which moped registrations actually increased in 2015 with +7.8 percent growth (15,956 units). Commenting on the trends in the European motorcycle and moped market, ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot said: "We will still need to wait until July 2016 to assess whether this is a real recovery, but the sector seems to have regained momentum in 2015. "This was a very positive year for the industry, with registrations increasing in most European countries, particularly in the largest markets such as Italy, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom. 4 INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - FEBRUARY/MARCH 2016

The mountain of market data that has been released since thelast edition of IDN - data for the full year 2015 - makes goodreading, at last! The good news is that with ACEM confirmingEU motorcycle registrations growth of over 10 percent, andthis being the second year of growth, we can now confidently

say that the demand for PTWs is finally headed in the right direction. That said, since the market's nadir in 2013 was a "tale of two halves" (the firstsix months of market decline was followed by the first indications that the bottomof the curve had been reached), Antonio Perlot of ACEM is right to suggest thatthe market still needs to wait until mid-year 2016 before getting too excited. The significance of that will be that if the early results being seen already for thisyear continue, then by July this year we will have seen, orshould have seen, some 36 months of stability andsteadily accelerating growth, since registrations reachedtheir low-point in the summer of 2013.Although the pattern so far has been far from universallypositive everywhere, with some markets still seeingmonthly or quarterly fluctuations in 2015, and some(France and Austria for example) appearing to be laggingbehind the rest of the EU, overall we are in a better placenow than at any stage since the start of the downturn in2008. Although markets such as France and Austriaappear to be locked into their own cycle and trail, withthe recovery being seen elsewhere by two or three years,at least the trends there are also now positive - by theend of 2015 both markets appeared to have reached orwere close to reaching their own low-points.

Of course while good news of this kind is much needed, the context in whichit needs to be analysed is of the utmost importance. The wider economicindicators, globally, aren't universally positive at this time - there is much

talk of softening consumer demand worldwide and signals that more economicinstability could be only a matter of months away.Indeed, though we have seen aggregate growth in new motorcycle registrationsin the EU of nearly 20 percent in the past two years, that means we have still lostmore than 40 percent of a market that in 2007 was at peak-cycle only in thecontext of another decline that had set in at the end of the last century. As BMW Motorrad supremo Stephan Schaller was careful to point out in hiskeynote speech at the ACEM conference in September last year, ours remains anindustry that, in total PTW terms, has lost half of its sales in less than a decade, and that if anyone thinks it will only take four or five years to get that back, orthat it will look, smell and taste the same as it used to when and if it does comeback, then they are likely to be very disappointed.Demographic changes, social upheaval and continuing economic uncertaintymean that the motorcycle industry, dealers, manufacturers and parts, accessoryand apparel vendors are all going to have to continue to work very hard indeedto sustain the present return to growth if the industry is to substantially eat intothat market loss any time soon. The motorcycle industry has some wonderful assets - ones that would be theenvy of many consumer markets - the long-term passion and commitment of its

hard-core customer base, the marketability of its product offerings (their"sexiness"), and the resulting lifestyle options they give, the increasing recognitionthat two wheels are good for urban mobility and potentially better for theenvironment than most other motorised alternatives - all these are "good things",but almost above all the market's ability to innovate its way into a viable futureand respond quickly to public taste and opinion makes our industry unique amongspecialty leisure and transport spending choice options.

Innovation was the theme of last year's ACEM conference, and that has alwaysbeen a hallmark of the motorcycle industry throughout its history. It has neverstood still - it has always responded to consumer needs and to technology.

In the course of the thirty years up to the recent downturn the industry changedcompletely - it saw what we now refer to as the "Japanesesuperbike revolution", it saw the advent of ever morestringent regulations, the development of technology suchas fuel injection and the use of ever lighter materials - allof which resulted in the market of the 'naughties' beingunrecognisable from the market of the fifties, sixties andseventies. So too the "lost decade" of the downturn has seen radicalchanges in consumer attitudes towards transport ingeneral and to the expectations they have of themotorcycle ownership and riding experience. In just the same way that the protests of 'Detroit' overlaminated windshields, seat belts and roll cages wereeventually consigned to the dustbin of naivety, so too theriders entering the market now are concerned about safety,

are concerned about environmental footprints and are concerned for their creaturecomforts and the ergonomics of the products they are being invited to buy - in away that was unheard of thirty years ago. There is no doubt that our industry can and will embrace these changes asopportunities, it is already doing so, but let nobody think that continuing to do sowill be an easy ride, and let nobody think that we have any kind of divine right tosuccess.

All success is hard earned. The turn-around we have seen so far has involvedmost businesses in considerable pain and much re-building of their productofferings, whether it be motorcycles or parts and accessories. It has seen

dealerships - franchised and independent - having to endure a decline that wasout of tune with the years of experience they had and hard work that had beenput in, and there is more of that ahead for all concerned. However, an aggregate growth of nearly 20 percent in two years is a robustfoundation for the future.

According to the latest data releasedby the motorcycle trade association inSpain (ANESDOR), the motorcyclemarket there was up by +26.96percent in January at 8,637 units (from6,803 in January 2015).In moped terms the Spanish marketwas +2.82 percent in January (984units), and for total PTWs the marketwas +23.55 percent at 9,621 units.ANESDOR announced last month thatit expected the strong growth seen in2015 to continue with total PTWregistrations for 2016 reaching some162,000 units, which would be furthergrowth of around 9 percent from the148,000 units sold in 2015 - 131,595of which were motorcycles (+19.55percent over 2014).At the time, Jose Maria Riano, theGeneral Secretary of ANESDOR, hadsaid that "2015 was a very positiveyear for the sector in Spain", and thatin looking beyond the statistics "the

motorcycle is clearly the choice oftransport for millions of citizens inSpain, especially for their dailycommute - PTWs are a major solutionfor mobility in Spain, reducing traveltimes between 50 and 70 percent, andreducing congestion and pollution".

Pointing to the greater age of the PTWfleet in Spain than is the case inneighbouring and nearby countries, hehad again repeated his call for greatergovernment support for the sector,"the average age of PTWs in Spain is14.7 years. Despite the growth in new

registrations the fleet actually agedfurther in 2015 - pointing to a stronggrowth in the total motorcycle parkhere. We believe that a review of thefinancial framework in which the PTWindustry operates is needed in Spain, and that simplifying driving licenseswould also favour fleet renewal".Honda led the way in Spain in marketshare terms in 2015 (21,845 units),followed by Yamaha, Kymco, Piaggioand Suzuki. The top selling model inSpain in 2015 was Kymco's Agility City125 (5,825 units), followed byHonda's SH 125 and Kymco's SuperDink 125. The top selling largedisplacement machine in Spain in2015 was Kawasaki's Z 800 (2,228units).Catalonia in North Eastern Spain is thestrongest regional market, accountingfor 27.5 percent of registrations in2015, followed by Andalucia (19.5percent).

Per Johansson, CEO of McRF, theSwedish motorcycle tradeassociation, says he is lookingforward to "continued growth, building on the positive resultsseen in 2015 as we headtowards a market in which weestimate that around 12,000motorcycles is a natural level".For the full year 2015motorcycle sales were up by+14.4 percent at 9,424 units, with Mopeds +22.8 percent at10,635 units and all categoriesof MotoCross models worth anadditional 2,707 - putting theSwedish market at 22,766 totalPTWs.In related powersports vehicleterms the Swedish market wasworth 7,198 ATVs in 2015 (+9.9percent), 5,840 snowmobiles(+16.7 percent) and 2,911'Quadricycles' (+13.4 percent)for a combined totalmotorcycle, PTW andpowersports vehicle market of38,715 units.Low volume statistics releasedfor January already shows themotorcycle sector at +92.2percent for the first month of2016, with mopeds +72.4percent and ATVs +12.9

percent.Johansson went on to say thatpent-up demand is fuellinggrowth, with Sweden's lowinterest rates and high levels ofemployment adding to thepositive outlook. He also reports that this year'sMCMassan motorcycle fair atGothenburg at the end ofJanuary saw an increasedattendance of 45,634 visitors -up by some 2,500 over 2014 -demonstrating that demand inSweden is strong andincreasing."Our focus on creating interestamong young people had agreat impact in Gothenburg, with 1,255 young people under19 years taking advantage of

the opportunity to come intothe fair for free during the firsttwo days. They were treated totest drives, excitement in theAction Hall, and they were ableto get expert advice on how toget a license and training inSweden."Over 900 people took testrides on new models, many ofthem more than once – and wethink there were some 1,800test rides taken in total duringthe four days of the expo, withthose without a license able totry to run for the first timeunder the guidance of highlyqualified instructors".Next year's show will be inStockholm from 26th to 29thJanuary 2017.

Japanese made motorcycle exports toEurope -3.65 percent for 2015The latest data release byJAMA, the automotive tradeassociation that includesrepresentation of Japanesemotorcycle manufacturersamong its membership, showsexports of Japanese mademotorcycles of 250cc+ toEurope in December at +31.17percent (22,397 units) but at -3.65 percent (151,715 units) forthe whole of 2015.Although down on 2014(157,462 units), it remains animprovement on 2012 (147,377)and 2013 (130,455), butcomparison with 2007 (420,601units) and 2008 (326,176) showsjust how badly the recession hitand changed the Japanesemotorcycle manufacturerdynamic in Europe. The increasing number of unitsbeing made by the Japanesebrands elsewhere in Asia, the USand South/Central America goessome way to explaining thedata, though the majority ofhigher value largerdisplacement machines are stillmade in Japan with theiroverseas factories primarilyengaged in making and selling

scooters and smaller capacityunits in 'emerging' markets(where import tariffs are high)and in making ATV/UTV units -especially in the United States, where demand for suchmachines is strongest. In total PTW export terms (allcapacities of powered twowheelers), Europe received23,981 units in December, up by+28.85 percent over December2014 and 170,746 units for thewhole of 2015, which is downby -2.16 percent over 2014.The US market continues to beeven more problematic for the

Japanese manufacturers thanEurope has been, with 250cc+exports of Japanese made units-38.23 percent in December(7.740 units) and -33.77 percentfor 2015 (79.942 units). Thatrepresents a dramatic decline inthe past 10 years; in 2006America received 436,874250cc+ units from the Japanesefactories, 331,978 in 2007 and265,198 in 2008 - with amassive drop to 126,602 in2009.Total PTW exports worldwidewere 417,709 units in 2015,which is down by -10.28 percent

Apparel will need CE markingUntil now only protective (motorcycle)gloves, boots and impact protectorswere categorised by the EU as being"protective gear" and as such neededto meet certain standards. However, the European Parliament hasnow decided to include all motorcyclegear in new protective personalequipment (PPE) regulations. This means that in a few years time, allmotorcycle gear sold in Europe willhave to meet the same safetystandards as other items categorisedas personal protective gear. They willhave to provide a minimum amount ofprotection against abrasion andimpact.Just like with boots and gloves now, there must be a label inside the gearthat confirms that it meets the

European standards and what level ofprotection is provided. Also, information about maintenance, storage and use must be given to thebuyer. The exact standards and date bywhen all motorcycle gear in shops inEurope must meet the standards arenot known yet - and it might take someyears yet. However, this new regulation does notmean that riders are obliged to wearonly approved clothing. Thisregulation is about sellingapproved protective clothing, butnot about wearing it. As far asFEMA knows, the Commission has noplans to make the wear of approvedmotorcycle gear mandatory.FEMA’s General Secretary Dolf Willigerscommented: "When all motorcycle

gear meets the standard you knowwhat amount of protection you canexpect. This is consumer protection wedon’t have now. Of course the newstandards will have to meet the needsof riders, but with the informationavailable to us at this time, I have allconfidence that this will be the case. "As long as the European authoritieswill not use these standards to forceriders to wear only approvedmotorcycle gear (and we intend tocampaign that this will not happen),standardisation of motorcycle gear is agood thing for riders".Helmets and visors are outside thescope of this regulation: they arecovered by UN ECE Regulation no. 22.

Dolf Willigers, General Secretary ofFEMA, said "as long as the Europeanauthorities will not use thesestandards to force riders to wearonly approved motorcycle gear, standardisation of motorcycle gearis a good thing for riders"

More female riders in USA than ever says MICFemale motorcycle ownership is at anall-time high according to the latest datafrom the Motorcycle Industry Council -having doubled in the past decade. TheMIC’s latest Motorcycle Owner Surveyfound that women account for 14percent of all U.S. motorcycle owners, well up from the 8 percent reported in1998.Sarah Schilke, National MarketingManager of BMW Motorrad USA andChair of PowerLily, a mentor groupconsisting of female motorcycle industryprofessional said: "Of the 9.2 millionmotorcycle owners in the United Statesthe number of female owners more thandoubled from 2003 to 2014. Among themore than 30 million Americans whorode at least one time in 2014, a quarterof these riders were women".

Among younger generations of owners, the percentage of women is even higher.Slightly more than 17 percent of Gen Xowners, and 17.6 percent of Gen Yowners, are women. Among Boomerowners, women make up 9 percent. The Owner Survey also revealed whattype of bikes women prefer. Cruisers arethe choice of 34 percent of female riders.Scooters rank a close second at 33percent, followed by sport bikes at 10percent. In the survey, of some 48,000American households, women werealso asked to share their top threereasons for riding motorcycles. Theyanswered "fun and recreation",followed by "sense of freedom" and"enjoy outdoors/nature". When itcomes to purchasing a motorcycle, women rate "Fuel Economy" and "Test

Rides" as the most important decision-making factors. The study revealed that female riders aresafety-conscious. While 60 percent ofwomen took a motorcycle safety course, only 42 percent of men had any formaltraining. In some state motorcycle safetytraining programmes, women make up30 percent of the student population. The median age for female motorcyclistsis 39 versus 48 for males; more than 49percent of women motorcyclistsperform their own maintenance or have

Exchange indicator relay givesversatile function control German accessory specialist Kellermann hasunveiled its all new CR4 key indicator relay - "a realmagic box for the motorcycle" - that is suitable forall 12V motorcycles.Described as the ultimate all-in-one solution formotorcycles with an indicator switch when LEDindicators are being installed, the load-independentindicator relay elevates the functionality of oldermotorcycles to an up-to-date level and evenoptimises the electronics of current bikes. It replacesthe original 2-3 pole flasher relay. The CR4 offers many new control options -indicating, warning, braking, start, alarm and muchmore. But the clever part of the design is that therider only needs to use what they really want - therider remains in control and can custom-tune theoperation to his/her preferences. The CR4 has an alarm unit, indicator unit withconvenience functions, hazard warning unit, adaptive break light and starter assistant. The corecompetence of the CR4 is the "comfort flasher" fornew LED lights, with what Kellermann's researchsuggests is the perfect pulse of 75 flashes per minute. The adaptive brake light makes the ride more safe -emergency or very strong braking will create aflashing break light for improved manoeuvrevisibility. The alarm unit signals thieves its protected statuswith a control light and reacts on movements or

shocks, with warning signals from horn and indictors. The starter assistant lets the engine start after thehand brake is pulled three times, and the hazardflasher can run without the ignition key, until shut-off manually or by the battery protection.Kellermann say the CR4 clearly is a smart all-in-onesolution for the electronics of the motorcycle and thatit installs easily - connecting directly to themotorcycle's wiring as an exchange indicator relay(only additional horn and constant live connectionsare required).Made in Germany, it is ECE tested, load independent, suitable for turn indicator switches, intuitive in

operation, prevents the accompanying flashing ofnon-activated indicators, has turn indicator resetmemory and comes as a slim-line 80mm long x21mm wide x 12mm unit with a high quality metalcasing for installation almost anywhere on themotorcycle.

'Drift' tri-compositefull-faceThe 'Drift' double-D ring full-face, first seen in IDN lastyear as a full carbon shell, is also offered in a tri-composite fibre shell construction (carbon, Kevlar andfibreglass), which is said to have been "developed forthe most demanding touring riders". It is equipped withan integrated DVT sunshade visor (Double Visor Tech)that permits riding in all light conditions with maximumsafety. The quick release visor mechanism with double springmovement allows visor self-adjustment to guarantee aclose contact of the transparent anti-scratch visor withthe window beading - meaning it is not necessary tomanually adjust it in order to avoid water or air comingin. The left-side lever stops the position of the visor 5mmfrom the window beading to avoid or eliminatefogging; when lifted, the lever locks the visor to avoidsudden opening during a ride or fall.An adjustable Max Vision Pinlock lens further helpsavoid fogging, and the integrated anti-scratchsunshade visor is easily manoeuvrable with a laterallever. Ventilation is guaranteed by three wide, glove-friendly air vents. The lower vent on the chin guarddrives air directly to the inner side of the visor to avoidmisting, while the vent on top channels fresh air insidethe helmet through numerous air grooves towards therear vent. The removable and washable lining is made withhypoallergenic and transpiring fabrics; the design iscommunication system ready, the weight of the tri-composite shell is 1,350 (+/-50g), with the full carbonversion at 1,250 (+/-50g).

Living with Euro-4

Italian performance and tuningtechnology specialist Dimsport'sRapid Bike branded range ofmotorcycle tuning modules areahead of the game when it comes

to the implications of the newgeneration of Euro-4 homologatedmotorcycles. At the heart of its technology is the abilityto work with, rather than fight against, thedata captured by the stock Lambda sensor(O2 sensor) and use the signal todynamically modulate the fuel injectionmap to keep the air fuel mix at theoptimum setting. All three of the Rapid Bike modules - EASY,EVO and RACING - are based on thistechnology, and all three automatically andinstantaneously return an air/fuel ratio thatis either too lean (too much air for the fuel)or too rich (too little air for the fuel) backto the optimum setting.Rapid Bike modules turn the Lambdasensor signal into the tuner’s friend - andturns every rider into a tuner. The dynamicmodulation of a signal designed to workwith a pre-installed map, with its pre-set,all conditions and all circumstances fixedcalibrations, opens up the 'Closed Loop'and renders the concept of a set injectionmap obsolete.Adopting electronic technology for enginemanagement has always required a numberof sensors to control the amount of fuelbeing injected and to maintain a balancedcarburetion. The amount and quality of intake aircoming through the engine and beingmixed with fuel is affected by differentfactors such as temperature, pressure andhumidity rate - this is the reason why bikeperformance changes considerably inoperation even after it has been in thehands of the best tuners, to say nothing ofthe remapping required by changes to thestock set-up such as aftermarket exhausts, air filters etc.The stock Lambda sensor measures thequantity of oxygen in the exhaust gases, while the OEM Engine Control Unit (ECU)determines the air fuel ratio (air quantity inproportion to one unit of gasoline) in thecontext of the value pre-set in its memory, and then modifies the injection timing toachieve its pre-settings based on the signalit receives from the Lambda (and other)sensors. The technology at the heart of Rapid Bike'smodules achieves a very simple result, yet

is highly innovative since it actuallytakes advantage of the stock Lambdasensor signal to improve engineefficiency while optimising fuelconsumption. The goal is not to eliminate the stockLambda sensor, but rather to perform adynamic modulation of its signal insuch a way that the results of doing soare fully compatible with the newinjection values set by the add-onmodule. This solution helps the whole system(OEM ECU + Rapid Bike Module) to bemore reliable, and to prevent the benefitsof improved fueling from being perceivedby the ECU as a mistake requiringcorrection. Rapid Bike's add-on modules change theamount of injected fuel (and they candirectly control up to 8 injectors) whilemodulating the stock Lambda sensor signalin such a way that the OEM ECU will notdetect any difference in the air fuel ratio. Its new "auto-adaptive" feature allowsRapid Bike modules to compare the air/fuel

With Euro-4 homologated bikes already hitting showroom floors, potentially there could bebike tuning problems ahead for the industry. Rapid Bike add-on tuning models allow you to"open-the-loop" and take control of the impact the 02 sensor signal has on the injectionmap, making conventionally pre-calibrated mapping obsolete.

The company says that its "technology re-maps the most critical section of the powerdelivery curve - the low and medium rpmrange where the Lambda sensor is in fullcontrol of the fueling parameters"

At the heart of its technology is the ability towork with, rather than fight against, the datacaptured by the stock O2 Lambda sensor

The AUTO-ADAPTIVE feature built into RapidBike's EVO and RACING modules will fine-tune the

map of injection values while the bike is beingridden. Seen here for a twin cylinder engine (2015Ducati Multistrada 1200), in which the module is

reading and modulating the signals from both thestock Lambda sensors in order to generate a

correction map specific for each cylinder. In thisway the module is self-learning and responds tothe constant change of external factors such astemperature, pressure, riding style, etc., and also

to the installation of additional aftermarketcomponents affecting directly the injection values

INDUSTRY EXTRA

The Ducati Multistrada was one of thefirst Euro-4 compliant street bikes toreach showroom floors. This dyno chartshows the behaviour of the air/fuelratio (at 25% Throttle Position Sensor)with the 2015 Multistrada 1200 in stockconfiguration (no aftermarket exhaustor air filter, etc.). It shows the Multistrada starting with avery lean mixture (almost 16 points, thatmeans 16 parts of air for 1 part ofgasoline); with the Rapid Bike EVOmodule this value comes down to 14points and maintained at a value between14 and 13.5, meaning the fuel mixture isricher, the throttle response is morereactive, the engine no longer suffersfrom the sudden power drops caused byinterruptions in the supply of gasoline, and the torque is more consistent. When the stock ECU reacts by trying to'correct' this (and re-set the AFR valueto around 12 points - meaning that themixture is becoming too rich), the EVO

module and its technology of Lambdasignal modulation continues to workeffectively and keeps a steady AFRtarget value around optimum at 13.5points. This means the corrections tothe injection values performed by theEVO module (and RACING version)directly connected to the injectorscreate a stable AFR value as close aspossible to the ideal target of 13/13.5points (depending also on other factorssuch as gasoline octane percentagecontent etc). The end result in this example is that at25% TPS there is a gain of almost 5 hpand the torque is also improved (from6,5 kg.m at 8845 rpm to 6,9 kg.m at8520 rpm). The real-world riding impact of thenumbers is that the bike’s handling andengine response are greatly improvedat lower and mid rpm - the mostimportant and most used part of thepower band.

ratio target value (set within the module'smap) with the signal reported by the stockLambda sensor. The result of thiscontinuous comparison determines whetherthe fuel being injected needs to beincreased or decreased - making sure theengine always delivers the bestperformance. This is even more useful when performingmodifications to the bike (such as theinstallation of a free-flow air filter or aracing exhaust system) that require theinjection map to be modified. Rapid Bikemodules are able to develop andimplement these changes automatically, while the rider is using the bike. Rapid Bike says its module will completethe injection auto-remapping processwithin a 200 km ride, even when startingwith a 'zero' value map.The company says that its "technology re-maps the most critical section of the powerdelivery curve - the low and medium rpmrange where the Lambda sensor is in fullcontrol of the fueling parameters". The so-called 'closed loop area' thattypically remains 'off-limits' forconventional add-on module technologybecomes tunable, putting the tuner and therider in full control without any sort oflimitations.

Wunderlich CEO Frank Hoffmann said that "ourconcept vehicles have become a traditional featurethat symbolise our expertise, creativity andmanufacturing capabilities. They are all aboutshowing what is possible and establishing designstandards that speak to the quality and ergonomicsof our products".The Wunderlich GS hybrid has a ten-kilowattelectrical front wheel gearbox, which offers severalnew "sturdy" advantages. The big enduro does notjust have much more propulsion on the ground, butthe powered front wheel also draws the GS throughcurves quickly. "The increased performance can beclearly felt in the driving operation", said Hoffmann. The emphasis is on efficiency - for example theenergy produced while braking the GS is used torecharge the battery. The front wheel operation, which can be adjusted while riding, can be usedentirely on its own. It can operate at up to 20kilometres per hour on electric with the combustion

motor turned off, and used as manoeuvringassistance, the electric motor even allows for reversefunction at three kilometres per hour - extremelypractical for parking the heavy GS on a slope.Nearly all the changes to the GS series, including thechassis set-up to balance out the additional weight, were developed in-house by the Wunderlichdevelopment and engineering team, with assistancefor implementation of the electric concept fromItalian electric mobility specialist Evolt, who co-developed some of the electrical components.Of course, when not "stretching the boundaries",Wunderlich's day job is designing and manufacturingparts and accessories that are made to improve theriding experience, and here we also see one of theirrecent product line additions - a cockpit fairing forthe R1200R LC.

Touratech Plug & Play- ESA suspension"Safer and more enjoyable riding at thetouch of a button", that's the claimTouratech makes for its "Plug & Travel"ESA suspension for 2007 - 2013 BMWR 1200 GS/Adventure models. The company says that the standardBMW shock absorbers are a"compromise solution, designed for arelatively lightweight rider withoutluggage", and that they are notserviceable. "Consequently theconditions under which the GS is used, and the different loading conditions ithas to cope with, cause trouble with thesuspension over time, as componentswear out prematurely".Touratech say their "Plug & Travel ESA"is the only complete BMW ESAreplacement suspension systemavailable, and that it simply replaces theBMW ESA shock absorbers and plugsinto the vehicle's control system. "It is completely and fully integratedinto the motorcycle via the originalBMW control unit", according to LarsWuerdemann, Head of Suspension atTouratech."The existing connectors and switcheson the handlebar remain fullyfunctional. All riding modes andconfigurations can be used normally, and are indicated on the BMW's cockpitdisplay. As a result, the BMW buttonswork as before, but the ridecharacteristics are better".The centrepiece of the Touratech "Plug& Travel" ESA suspension system is astepper motor that is integrated into the

shock absorber - one developedspecifically for Touratech. It regulatesthe damping adjustment, while thefamously robust Touratech suspensionEPA spring preload (Electric PreloadAdjuster) enables specially testedTouratech balance and damping set-ups. The shock absorbers("manufactured using precisioncomponents that have been tried andtested over thousands of miles oftouring") adapt to "all kinds of roadcondit ions", according toWuerdemann.Available with alternative spring ratesto compensate for a significantlyheavier or lighter rider and luggageweight, it is fully serviceable ensuring"maximum ride dynamics and thelongest possible service life for ridingwith a heavy load and varying roadconditions while touring". For seriously ambitious long-distancetravel with a lot of off-road work,Touratech offers a severe-duty "Plug &Travel" ESA "Expedition" version.Featuring a shock absorber with anexternal reservoir and tuning for moreextreme requirements, the hydraulicposition-dependent damping system(PDS) ensures that it will not bottom out"even with heavy luggage in the mostextreme off-road conditions".

SR2 Supersport helmetGerman specialist Schuberth Helmets saysthat the five years of racing and roadexperience with its SR1 Supersport helmetand three decades of extensive wind tunnelresearch has given them the knowledge andinsight for the updates that have now beenincorporated into the development of theSR2, available in the spring of 2016."In countless tests in our Air & Acoustics Lab,the new SR2 has been optimised formaximum race track performance. Thehelmet's ideal shape with a relatively widefront and narrower rear not only serves tominimise aerodynamic drag and strain on theneck muscles, but has also beenaerodynamically stabilised with the help oftwo side spoilers and the further developedD-Force 2 spoiler on the rear side of thehelmet."This means the SR2 is directionally stable inthe wind, without lift or any tendency to

Offered in six sizes and three different outershells, it is made from a special glassfibre-reinforced, thermoset-moulded polymermatrix resulting in a weight of only 1,295g(size M), which is said to make it one of thelightest helmets in its class. Scrambler Clubman

With so many OEMs rushing for retro and scramblingfor Scramblers, one of the leading Europeanspecialists who has been "keeping the flame alight"since "motorcycles of character" were last in voguewith the volume manufacturers is LSLMotorradtechnik of Krefeld in Germany.Headed-up by former Harley dealer Jochen Schmitz-Linkweiler, he founded LSL in 1984 - at a time whenthe current styles that are now becomingmainstream were being replaced by superbikes. However, the '60s and '70s styling that spent somany years on the fringes of motorcycle design isnow back in the spotlight. What was once consideredrighteous but radical is now driving new unit salesas naked and retro streetbikes form the vanguard ofthe search for new riders with beards and the returnto growth. In addition to his extensive parts and accessoryprogramme, Jochen's business has become wellknown for its special projects, especially its'Clubman' series, and with a handful of "fellowtravellers" in the European motorcycle industry canlay claim to being among the pioneers of bringingcustom in from the cold, of making it respectable andmaking it desirable.

Always quick to embrace OE platforms with potentialwith frame styles and powertrain packages of theirown devising, LSL's latest 'Clubman Series' project isa reinterpretation of the current production DucatiScrambler. With its characteristic v-twin and classic space-frame, the Scrambler provides an excellent basis forself-expression - as the results of Ducati's 'CustomRumble' dealer competition have proved.LSL's priority is to liberate the Bologna 800 from itsstreet chains and set free its true off-road spirit.Ride performance is dramatically improved by thereplacement of the less than convincing stock frontend with Ohlins upside down forks and an off-roadfacing 19" front wheel. An LSL X-01 X-Bar handlebarand CNC milled 'Extreme' rider footpegs create anew riding dynamic that is enhanced by provenelements from motorcycle design history such as theround lamp, classic-based seat and short fenders.Further details from the LSL offer include theadjustable short-style levers, 40mm offset triple treeset, sprocket cover, license plate bracket, Clubmanmirrors and adjustable passenger pegs, whichcomplete the look.LSL developed the Scrambler Clubman as a joint

venture with specialist luggage brand Hepco &Becker of Pirmasens in Germany, who used it toshowcase the launch of their new soft luggage line- the crash bars are theirs too.

Magura expands "Hard CoreTechnology" master cylinder familyIn the 12 months since its launch, Magura's race-derived HC3 radial master cylinders have becomeestablished as top-selling upgrades with "ambitiousroad riders and customisation aficionados who havethe highest possible level of demands", according tothe Bad Urach, Germany based specialist.Described as the "cream of hydraulic fitmentupgrades" for Supersports bikes, Supermotos, streetfighters and "classy" custom bikes, the cleverspace-saving modular design of the range with aversatile top-mounted screw, which doubles as thelever transmission ratio adjustment feature, allowsMagura to offer three models of brake mastercylinders each in three-piston bore dimensions andtwo models of clutch master cylinder in threedimensions. The brake masters are available in 11, 12 and 13 mmwith short lever without ABE certification, and 14, 15and 16 mm or 17, 18 and 19mm with ABE.The clutch master is available for 11, 12 and 13 mmfor mineral oil applications, and 14, 15 and 16 mmDOT applications.Based on Magura's patented "Hard CoreTechnology", precision and feel are the hallmarks ofthe high grade aluminium construction, withoptimised lever transmission and a direct pressurepoint. The kits include the folding lever, titaniumclamp fixing screws, a smoked glass reservoir withretaining bracket, a banjo bolt with seals and a brakeor clutch switch. On sale from February this year, and seen in IDNMagazine when it was announced just before lastyear's 'Milan' Show, the compact size non-ABS orABS-compatible HC1 master brake and clutchcylinder version brings the same advancedergonomics and patented technology but adds an"entry-level" model to the HCT family for lessdemanding street bikes and Supermoto models. Thatsaid, the phrase "entry-level" doesn't mean that thepatented technology and precision arecompromised.

The same Advanced Seal Technology prevents airfrom entering the hydraulic system and diminishesinternal friction, significantly improving brake andclutch performance. The HCT system uses a "slotted" piston with astationary primary seal. Fully compatible with allbrake systems, with or without ABS, the systemprevents "ABS kickback" damage.

Sometimes it’s the simple things that makeall the difference! All OptiMate battery charging, diagnosticand maintenance products delivered since2008 come standard with integrated wallmounts neatly positioned around the cables’entry/exit points, allowing the charger to besecurely mounted, even to 'stud' walls. However, many such products seem tospend most of their time living on the floor, next to the vehicles whose batteries arereceiving "the best care in the world".OptiMate battery chargers are fully sealedso it doesn't hurt them - they wouldcontinue working even if covered in dust ordirt, or at worst if liquid is spilt all overthem. However, it leaves the cables getting mixedup and the units getting kicked around andcausing trip hazards. Indeed brand ownerTecMate say that they have seen so manytechnicians who have tried to improvise away of hanging their OptiMates up in theworkshop that they have decided to re-invent that particular wheel once and forall.Step forward the OptiMate HOOK! It easilyattaches to the charger, and then the unitcan be hung pretty much anywhere -including from the handlebar - so it is in fullview, at a convenient height, with all thefunctions and features easy to see andaccess, including being able to monitor thecharge progression and battery condition asdisplayed on the OptiMate LED panel. OptiMate HOOK fits any OptiMate chargerwith integrated wall-mounts and attachesto one of the charger's integrated wall-mounts (typically at the AC cable entry end),with a second optional attachment to thecable itself. Even better - slots are provided to bundleand store excess cable on the HOOK. Nowwhy can't everything in life be so simple!

Founded in 1979, Stylmartin has a long history ofmaking "traditional" motorcycle footwear, andwith the "Continental" the brand makes a vintage-style boot comeback using current technologiesand materials. It is a semi-artisanal product, retaining thosedetails symbolic of the past, for example the fire-branded logo is exactly the same as 30 years ago,as are the retro-style chrome metal hooks thatattach the four straps. The boot is part ofStylmartin's 2016 "Touring Emotions" collectionand made from water-repellent, treated calfskinnappa leather. The boot is particularly striking in

the red version seen here - aged using a specificformulation of hand- applied wax finish. The internal lining is also made of leather formaximum breathability; protection featuresinclude PU inserts for the ankles and mouldedplates in heat-resistant material for the shins(positioned underneath the logo). The sole isanatomical and removable, and the Vibram outersole is said to provide excellent grip. The boot comes in sizes 38 to 47 in red or black, and Stylmartin say this boot is equally at home onvintage Enduros, English classics, cafe racers orscramblers.

H2R Evolution (Carbon),GSX-S1000F Slip-On(Titanium) lines

Akrapovic has launched an all-new exhaust systemfor the "ground-breaking" Kawasaki Ninja H2R thatis said to "further enhance this incredible motorcyclewith the latest technologies from the world’s premierexhaust manufacturer".This carbon system uses the same design originallyseen on the Akrapovic concept system and first usedon the Slip-On Line exhaust for the Ninja H2. Theunique profile of the exhaust muffler, with the sleeve, end cap, heat shield and bracket constructed fromcarbon fibre "follows the lines of this motorcycleperfectly", with headers (components cast inAkrapovic’s in-house foundry), collectors, link pipesand a sleeved pre-muffler all manufactured fromhigh-grade titanium. Akrapovic say the main goal of their technicians hasbeen to lower the noise level to make it "compliantfor some track usage without any impact onperformance levels. Intelligent solutions havereduced the noise emissions from 116.4 dB to 101.8dB without compromising any of the performance of

the stock open system". In fact, the company says ithas actually managed to increase the mid-rangepower levels. The company also says its sound engineers havetuned the system to give the motorcycle a deeper andricher sound – despite the reduction in noise levels. An easy-to-follow installation manual is said to makethis performance upgrade a simple plug-and-playoperation with no need for remapping or other parts. The company states it is also a perfect fit for the road-going Kawasaki Ninja H2. Also seen here, the latest addition to their Slip-OnLine (Titanium) exhaust for the Suzuki GSX-S1000Ffeatures a conical muffler described as manufacturedfrom race-bred materials with an outer sleeve intitanium, with the front and rear muffler assemblyconstructed from stainless steel, carbon fibre heatshield and carbon fibre end cap. Akrapovic says that reduced weight adds to theperformance of the 999 cc inline four-cylinderengine, especially when the engine hits 5,000 rpm,and torque levels are enhanced to "ensure asmoother and more enjoyable ride as theperformance increases". The system meets EC/ECEtype approval without having the need for a noise-reduction insert. No additional modifications areneeded.

Yamaha Motor Europe's 2016 'YardBuilt' dealer competition will seeYamaha’s European dealers again "mixit" with some of the best custom bikebuilders in the world to create their own'Yard Built' projects from Yamaha’sSport Heritage range. Yamaha say that "dealers have beenbusy over the winter and now they needthe public's help to choose the bestbuild!"Further to recent collaborations withiconic builders such as Portugal’s 'itroCkS!bikes' and Yard Built newcomersGS Mashin of Switzerland have addedfuel to the fire and motivated thedealers to really pull out all the stops. The results show that the only limits arethe imagination. The builds proveeveryone can take a brand new bikefrom the Sport Heritage range andpersonalise it to their liking - openingthe world of custom possibilities to bikeowners who have considered their owncustom, but were afraid of the technicalknowledge required". The competition has simple rules - thebike needed to be from the currentSport Heritage range, and anunspecified number of genuineaftermarket accessories had to be used. This year Yamaha Motor Europe isawarding special prizes to the bestcustom build in the following threeengine categories: single-cylinder andparallel-twin, V-twin and V-four andfinally inline-four. Voting closes on the31st March. Yamaha say they will beopening up the competition to thepublic later in the year. The initiative started two years ago witha Yamaha Yard Built campaign that sawinvited customisers collaborating tocreate builds based on the SportHeritage range. The competition lastyear then saw European Yamahadealers create 41 of their own

interpretations of the platforms - overten thousand bike fans from acrossEurope cast votes online to help choosefour category winners for unveiling atthe Glemseck 101 event in Germany inSeptember.“This project has proved a greatvalidation that the custom scene is trulyalive and kicking - not just in the nichecustom world, but that it has now beenembraced across Europe by ourdealerships”, commented YamahaMotor Europe Product Manager ShunMiyazawa. “The end results have been reallyimpressive, with some stunning buildsthat wouldn't be out of place sittingalongside the top custom builders.More importantly it shows that ourSport Heritage range of motorcycles isthe perfect base for personalisation". Many of the builds featured genuine

Yamaha as well as aftermarket bolt-onaccessories, showing that riders canachieve quality results without anycutting or welding to the frame. The VMAX category winner was LibertyYam of France with a tribute tolegendary Yamaha France icon ‘JCO’ -muscular Café-Dragster build in 60thanniversary yellow and black colours. The XJR1300 class was won byinternationally respected Germandealership Motorrad Klein with apurposeful, race-inspired machine thatmade more than a passing reference toWSB racing star Noriyuki Haga. The winning XV950 came fromPortuguese dealer Yamaha Motor 7with a dual colour scheme scrambler-inspired build; the winning SR400 wasa classic café racer style interpretationof the popular SR platform by MotorMadrid.
