The conference brought together policy-makers, industry representatives and academics who specialise in transport research. ACEM says that "the motorcycle industry’s forward-oriented strategy follows an integrated approach covering vehicle technology, user training and infrastructure safety. "As part of this new strategy, the motorcycle industry has signed a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) - safety systems that allow for communication between vehicles and between vehicles and infrastructure. "ACEM members commit to have at least one of their models available for sale with a cooperative ITS feature by 2020. Moreover, the industry will also carry out research on an eCall system for motorcycles - a system that generates emergency calls from a crashed vehicle instantly after a collision has occurred”. With regard to the training of riders, ACEM and the German Road Safety Council (DVR) have joined forces to promote "high quality voluntary post- license training schemes across the EU through a DVR-ACEM Quality Seal".The aim is to help European riders to more easily identify which of the training schemes on offer to them are of "high quality". The European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers will also organise a series of workshops in different European countries to "identify and promote measures to improve road safety at national, regional and local levels". These meetings will "bring together key stakeholders, including public authorities and riders’ organisations. Among others, the areas to be discussed will include development of more effective safety policies, design and maintenance of road infrastructure and promotion of compliance with traffic rules. The "Safe ride to the future" strategy builds on previous safety initiatives. In recent years these have included ACEM members’ commitment to voluntarily fit all of their new vehicles with automatic headlamps-on; the signing of the European Road Safety Charter and the decision to fit 75% of street motorcycle models with an advanced braking systems (as options or standard fitting) by 2015, a decision taken voluntarily in advance of the respective regulatory requirements for manufacturers to do so. Commenting on the publication of the "Safe ride to the future", ACEM Secretary General Antonio Perlot said: “This strategy confirms ACEM members’ desire to be a leader in road safety. It highlights our ambition to have the best possible road safety outcomes for Europe. “The number of road fatalities amongst powered-two wheeler users in Europe is declining. These results are encouraging, but much still remains to be done. The motorcycle industry will continue to promote and support all initiatives that help to create a safer environment on Europe’s roads. “Road safety is not only about the vehicle. Road safety policies must look at vehicles’ safety features, users’ behaviour and the infrastructure in which they operate. “As the number of motorcycles and mopeds on Europe’s roads is expected to continue to grow, as a reflection of citizens’ expectations, it is essential to ensure that they are adequately integrated into transport policies at all levels. We look forward to continuing our cooperation with European and national policy-makers to achieve our common goal of saving lives”. THIS year's major industry shows both displayed evidence ofearly stage market recovery being underway, in terms ofvisitor numbers and with regard to the reports that we hereat IDN heard about sales in the aftermarket parts and

accessories sectors. The Adventure Tourer and 'Naked' street bike sectors still appear to be the

primary focus for high-volume parts and accessory product lines, but with plentyof top-end products (such as exquisite rearsets and wheels for the most recentDucati and BMW models inparticular), the trend towards"premium" products in quality anddesign terms, and towards riderconveniences and ergonomics, continues to dominate the directionthat is leading the vendor communityout of the downturn. While both shows had unsold

exhibit space in their halls (especiallyEICMA), and while there were stillnotable absences from the exhibitor line-ups (also especially at EICMA), thesmaller booth habit that many parts and accessory vendors have been adoptingfor some time now meant that there was still sufficient critical mass at bothexhibitions to keep even the most demanding dealers and consumers engaged. As ever, the "real estate" was dominated by the OEs, though they too have

also cut down their footprints in recent years. Having embraced housekeeping toensure that they stayed in-the-game, the aftermarket is managing to make smallerbooth spaces pay off, with a sense of purpose and focus dominating their exhibits. That's not to say that there were no spectacular booths, especially at EICMA,

and especially among the helmet manufacturers, where there continues to be anarms race among the likes of Airoh, Nolan Group and LS2, as those who seethemselves as the brand "players" staking their claims for market leadershipmoving forward.

INTERMOT has clearly reconfirmed its reputation as the leading "internationalindustry and public event" for high mileage motorcycle riders, which is obviousfrom even the briefest comparative scrutiny of the visitor demographic on the

busiest of the consumer days at both shows. With over 200,000 trade and consumer visitors packing the aisles of Europe's

fifth largest exhibition complex, this year the City of Cologne has been celebratingthe 50th anniversary of the first time the international motorcycle industry cameto town, with the albeit much remodelled Koelnmesse facility itself marking itsown 90th anniversary.Meanwhile, four weeks later, EICMA marked its 100th anniversary with an

excellent series of retrospective 'Decade' exhibits that purposed much of theunsold hall space with a well conceived series of exhibits that showcased the

trends in the 100 years of market evolution seen at their shows.

EICMA's post show release said that their attendance was also up over thelast show, by a claimed 14.7 percent over 2013. However, there remainswidespread scepticism among industry observers and exhibitors alike in

connection with the total number claims that EICMA makes, in common, it hasto be said, with those issued by other motorcycle exhibition organisers in Italy.EICMA say that 45,910 of the 628,000 visitors who "crossed the gates" at

the Rho Fiera Milano were "trade" visitors of one kind or another (with 31 percentof them coming from outside Europe),and that they hosted 1,053 exhibitorsfrom 34 countries. In that other expo arms race, the one

of expo rivalry, INTERMOT claim around960 vendors, from some 37 countries, with visitors of one kind or another from105 countries in total - indeed 69percent of their exhibitor footprint comesfrom outside Germany, which is certainlya higher percentage than the largely

domestic Italian exhibitor footprint seen at EICMA.Regardless of the numbers, the general view at both shows was that there is

the return of some kind of growth, and of a return to a market in Europe thatfavours quality over price, with large displacement riding leading the way.EICMA still has its much larger share of apparel, race and smaller displacement

exhibitors, and that remains a major differentiator between the two, and still amajor characteristic of the domestic Italian market.INTERMOT on the other hand is much more connected to street performance

and robust longer distance riding solutions. Overall though, the conclusions to bedrawn from the two events are similar.Despite the macro-economic concerns that continue to haunt the Euro currency

bloc, the modest growth now being seen in new motorcycle registrations Europeis beginning to filter through to the aftermarket parts and accessory industry -even if the reality is that this is still affecting sentiment rather more than actualproduct volume growth, with improving profits in the sector still due at least asmuch to judicious business management (such as buying smaller expo booths!)as they are to actual increases in sales revenues.

THE latest data from ANCMA (Associazione NazionaleCiclo Motociclo Accessori), the Italian motorcycleindustry trade association, shows that total PTWregistrations fell by -16.1 percent for November, albeiton low volumes (5,723 units compared to 6,819 units inNovember 2013).For the year to date, the Italian market is showingmodest growth at +1.2 percent (151,714 units),compared to being -25.9 percent for the first 11 months

of 2013 and -18.8 percent for the same period in 2012.In motorcycle terms the Italian market is +3.4 percentfor the first eleven months of the year at 52,968 units, ofwhich Enduro bikes (18,006 units) and Naked style bikes(17,658 units) are by far the most popular sectors of themarket.Of the 151,714 total PTW registrations for the year todate in Italy (Jan-Oct inclusive), some 32.7 percent(49,620 units) were of 501cc or higher.

THE strong recovery seen in the Spanishmotorcycle market so far this yearcontinued in November, with the latest datafrom ANESDOR, the motorcycle industrytrade association in Spain, showing new

motorcycle registrations up by +25.4percent (7,813 units) compared toNovember 2013.For the year to date, the Spanish marketis +19.3 percent compared to the firsteleven months of 2013, at 104,331 units(compared to 87,150 for the year-agoperiod). In moped (small cc) terms, the Spanishmarket remains weak, with sales down11.7 percent in November on sales of just978 units; -4.3 percent for the year to date(13,607 units).According to Jose Maria Riano, SecretaryGeneral of ANESDOR, the November figureis one that "exceeds our best estimates"and "a decisive factor was the mildweather, unusual for this time of year."The climate does not explain everything ofcourse. The improving economic situation iscritical, as are the advantages of twowheels in terms of mobility. "However, as mentioned previously, it is notall good news following the announcement

of the next stage in the fleet renewal plans(PIMA 7 and PIVE 4) with two-wheelers stillexcluded despite the average age of themotorcycle fleet in Spain exceeding 14years."For us, this makes no sense on practical oreconomic grounds. Motorcycles reducetravel time and parking overhead, consumeless resources and produce fewer emissions, therefore including two-wheelers in theincentives and initiatives designed toencourage the replacement of older bikeswould have a positive environmental, lifestyle and state revenue impact".

THE latest data from German motorcycle industry trade associationIVM (Industrie-Verband Motorrad Deutschland) shows newmotorcycle registrations up by 18.5 percent in October, albeit on thelow volumes associated with this time of the year - 3,834 units(compared to 3,235 units in October 2013).This follows the market being up by 20.7 percent in September(6,124 units) and represents the 24th month of growth in Germanysince January 2012.For the year to date, Germany is running +9.6 percent (92,470 units)compared to being +2.3 percent by the end of October 2013, and+2.3 percent by the end of October 2012.In total PTW terms, the +16.5 percent growth seen in September(9,594 units) has been followed up by +20.1 percent growth inOctober (6,599 units). For the year to date, total PTW registrations in Germany are up 7.6percent (133,931 units) compared to being +1.1 percent after thefirst ten months of 2013, and +0.6 percent at the same stage in2012.

German motorcycleregistrations up 18percent for October

ACCORDING to the latest datareleased by JAMA, the tradeassociation that represents Japanesemotorcycle manufacturers, theircombined motorcycle exports toEurope were up by 14.8 percent inOctober this year, to 11,432 units - themost for October since 2010.

For the first 10 months of the year, motorcycle exports to Europe were upby 24.9 percent, at 124,670 units, which is only 1,000 or so behind the2011 and 2012 performance.

In terms of all Japanese made PTWs(all displacements) October was 12.2percent up, at 12,939 units - again, these represent the best figures forOctober since 2010.

For the year to date, the Japanesemanufacturers have nearly recoveredto the position they were in 2012, at138,990 units, which is up by 22.5

percent over the first 10 months of2013.

Interestingly, the sustainedimprovement seen by Japanesemanufacturers in their Europeandealerships has not been replicatedthis year in the United States, whereyear to date motorcycle shipmentshave caught up some ground, and arecurrently reported as running at -1.2percent (94,248 units).

This is around 1,100 behind the first10 months of 2013, but it stillrepresents a dramatic improvement onthe first half of this year, and comparedto the near complete collapse inJapanese motorcycle exports to the USseen in 2010 - at the same point in thatyear the United States had onlyimported 48,340 250cc+ unitscompared to the 357,430 seen in thefirst 10 months of 2006.

SW-MOTECH and Bags-Connection,which have been sharing premises inRauschenberg, Germany, since 2006,have now announced that they will beoperating as one brand.

“Uniting under one brand allows usa more cohesive market approach andmakes it easier for us to showcase our

expertise in metal, textile andcomposite products alike,” said JörgDiehl, Head of the accessory producer’smarketing department.

“For years now we have seen anincreasing demand for premiummotorcycle accessories. Afterinvestments in new production

facilities and an increase in headcountto now more than 180 employees, weexpect continued growth”.

The merger has had little impact onemployees and customers of the twobusinesses. “De facto we have alreadybeen acting as one company for severalyears,” explained Achim Kessler, formerCEO of Bags-Connection and nowresponsible for luggage systems andtextile products within SW-MOTECH.“The two companies already had aclose business relationship as the threefounders of SW-MOTECH, Jörg Diehl,Kai Jockel and Jürgen Swora, held a 30percent interest in Bags-Connection.Now the four of us together aremanaging partners of SW-MOTECH,into which all Bags-Connection assetshave been incorporated.”www.sw-motech.com

Continental 'One-Channel'ABS for PiaggioCONTINENTAL, the Germancompany best known for itsextensive tyre range, hasintroduced its ‘One-Channel’ABS for smaller motorcyclesand scooters. Based on its ABStechnology for use in cars, thesystem has gone into seriesproduction in the VespaPrimavera and Sprint scootersbeing built by the PiaggioGroup.“Our involvement in such topsellers makes us proud andunderlines the claim made byContinental that we canprovide innovative solutions toour customers,” said Ronan LeRoy, Head of the motorcyclebusiness within the Vehicle

Dynamics Business Unit ofContinental's Chassis & SafetyDivision. The news that Continental isworking with Piaggio comesfollowing ten years ofdeveloping and producing anti-lock brake systems fortwo-wheelers. With a boxvolume of significantly lessthan 300cc and weighingroughly 420g, the One-ChannelABS is very light and can beeasily applied to suit a widerange of motorcycle andscooter models. ABS control ofthe front wheel stops it fromlocking up even during a panicbrake by the driver. A wheelspeed sensor constantly

monitors the front wheel'sturning speed, and from thisthe algorithms in the controlunit calculate whether brakingcould potentially cause thefront wheel to lock up. If so, thesystem will reduce the brakepressure, thus preventing lossof directional stability and roadholding. The One-Channel ABScomplements Continental'sportfolio of motorcycle systemscurrently in series production;Motorcycle Integral BrakeSystems and Motorcycle Anti-Lock Brake Systems (Two- andThree-Channel ABS). The VespaGTS 300, the Piaggio Beverly, the Vespa 946 and the PiaggioX10 are available with a Two-Channel ABS, and the PiaggioMP3 is equipped with a Three-Channel ABS. For all motorcycles over 125ccABS will become mandatoryEurope-wide. The regulation iseffective for all new type-approved motorcycles from2016 and for all newmotorcycles from 2017.www.conti-moto.com

IT is already ten years sinceBMW introduced what wasthen (2004) the firstelectronically adjustable

suspension (ESA), allowingfinger-tip damping control fromthe handlebar. That was followedby ESA II in 2009 - giving riderspush-button road and loadcontrol over spring rates.

ESA turned out to be a first step, afirst step in a logical progressionleading to the development of thecurrent dynamic ESA semi-activesuspension system – an "intelligent"system that uses sensors to monitorthe status of the motorcycle andterrain characteristics, optimising thesuspension in milliseconds whileriding.

With many BMW F 800 GS and R1200 GS bikes equipped with theiroriginal ESA systems, even with thelatest dynamic ESA, Touratech is nowbringing out its own ESA version forthese models.

Developed in partnership withDutch specialists Tractive, Touratech'ssystem is said to be an easy-install"Plug & Travel" ESA - one that is fullyserviceable and tuneable to thecustomer's request. Tract iveSuspension specialise in electronicsuspension, founded by the former WPSuspension core development teamwhen KTM relocated the WPSuspension business to Austria. Thewhite colour of the springs is areference to this heritage. The team atTractive previously invented ESA1 andESA2 and is now actively involved indynamic suspension developmentworldwide. The company says that

"even for the newestmodels with dynamicESA, Touratech isworldwide the only realreplacement aftermarketsupplier".

The company statesthat every aspect of thissystem is geared to long-distance touring, with lots

of luggage, on almost any type ofroad surface, and that "Plug andTravel" means no modifications arerequired and components can beeasily swapped out.

"As far as operation goes, customers can adjust the suspensionin the usual way," says suspensionproduct manager Jo Glaser. "We usethe original BMW controls, but wehave completely redesigned the shockabsorber set-up.

"Our ESA suspension system willinterest anyone who wants to taketheir F 800 GS or R 1200 GS touring.Riders who fit the TouratechSuspension ESA system not only getspring elements with a special set-upfor touring, but the components – likeall shock absorbers from TouratechSuspension - are fully serviceable.

"Riders whose motorbikes aren'tequipped with an electronicsuspension system can install our ACEsystem - a self-contained system thatuses its own sensors developed byTouratech Suspension", said Jo Glaser.

"This means that even motorcycleswhich previously used conventionalshocks can be fitted with an electronicsuspension system. Currently the ACEsuspension system is available for theBMW R 1200 GS (front/rear shockabsorber), the Yamaha Super Ténéréup to 2013 (rear shock absorber), theTriumph Tiger Explorer (rear shockabsorber) and BMW R 1150GS/Adventure (front/rear shockabsorber)".

Also available, the fully serviceableTouratech Suspension Cartridge KitExtreme is a fully adjustable dampingcartridge for the original fork that isdes igned to withstand theexceptionally tough conditions ofenduro touring.

Tom Glazemakers of Tractive Suspension in the Netherlands, seen here on theright with Lars Wurdemann of Touratech, told IDN that "suspensiontechnology is one of the two most important elements for safe andenjoyable riding. The developments that we have seen in the industry in thepast decade are only the start - the next 10 years will see motorcyclesuspension data gathering, and the systems that data can drive open up awhole new era in the development of the riding experience".

is said to deliver a "noticeably moresensitive response with high stabilityand the greatest possible resilience".

The company says that unlike opentypes, which use the same oil for bothdamping and lubrication, theirs is aclosed system developed for theextreme stresses endured bysportsbike forks.

With this design the damping oil is

located in a closed cartridge, leadingto very exact damping control, similarto that of a shock absorber. Thecartridge uses an internal piston of35mm (which the company says is thelargest in the market!), which allowsfor stable and precise dampingsetting. A special Motorex oilformulation is used for filling the forklegs to lubricate the fork.

Riders receive a completely filledcartridge fitted with the appropriatespring; only the original outer tubesare retained. Touratech Suspensionclosed cartridges are said to handle"even extreme damping frequencieson rough off-road rides. They aresupplied with the unique Touratechtouring set-up for the respectivemotorcycle. For individual settings –

e.g. different loading conditions or fora completely personalised suspensionset-up – it is possible to adjust thespring preload as well as the dampingon compression and reboundstrokes".

A built-in "hydraulic end stop"prevents the fork mechanicallybottoming out when the bike is riddenhard. "This cartridge system provideshugely improved ride safety coupledwith maximum ride dynamics", saysProduct Manager Jo Glaser.

Touratech say their Cartridge KitExtreme is the ideal solution for allmotorbikes that do not come withfactory-fitted adjustable forks. It isavailable now for all BMW F 800 GSmodels, and the Triumph Tiger 800 XCand Tiger Explorer. Lowering kits ofapprox. 25-50mm for the forks, and asui tably adapted TouratechSuspension shock absorber, areexpected soon.

Optimate poweraccessories systemAS the established PowerSportsmarket leader in terms of making sureriders have access to well maintainedbatteries, it was only logical forTecMate to turn their attention to howelse that power can be used.

Starting, powering riding andengine systems, lights, controls andaudio all require a reliable powersource, but the nature of the ridingexperience is maturing quickly.

Power take-off points, such asbayonet/cigarette lighter style plugs, have been the default resource on themotorcycle for everything from cell

'phones to the new generations ofheated clothing for a long time.

Their disadvantages includerelatively low current rating, connection stability, fixed or limitedpositional options and, fundamentally, are different to the fittings thatmodern portable devices use. So whynot reverse the thinking and usesimilar fittings and connections tothose that now populate the mostcommon devices that people want tobe able use on-the-go?

That is exactly what TecMate hasdone in developing a systematic

approach to delivering motorcycle-wide access to the power of that wellmaintained battery.

The company behind the Optimateand other leading batterymaintenance and charging productshas developed a modular power kitthat expands with the rider’srequirements, anticipating the widerange of "current" (!) needs, as wellas offering a future-proof poweredaccessory connection solution that cangrow as the rider's requirementsevolve.

The range is based around a system

of cables, connectors, splitters andUSB and LED accessories.

The fuse protected system offersoptions for connecting and chargingmost USB devices and includes Garminand Apple compatible adaptors. SAEand DIN connectors and cableextenders connect to the battery viapermanent leads to take power andcharging options to the front and rearof the motorcycle. Accessories includea 12V LED flashlight, battery andvehicle charge system checker andvoltage alert/charge-now indicator forstandard/wet cell and sealed AGM andgel batteries.

New stability control from BoschBOSCH is set to launch a newversion of its motorcyclestability control (MSC). MSC Base is a new variant of itsexisting safety system, and issaid to be the first MSC to bebased on conventional ABStechnology. This technologyfeatures two separate brakingchannels, and complements thecomposite-based ‘MSCenhanced’ system. “With MSC base, Bosch will bein a position to offer leanangle-dependent support fornearly every type ofmotorcycle,” said Dr. FevziYildirim, head of theirmotorcycle safety productgroup in Japan. The corresponding hydraulicunit and lean-angle sensor willpremiere in Ducati’s new 1299Panigale. Bosch is alsosupplying the lean angle-

Öhlins adds Scooter, Multistradaand additional MX product options

ÖHLINS has begun torelease details of itssuspension productsfor 2015, which

includes a wide selection ofoff-road applicationscovering everything from50cc mini motocross to Openclass and Enduro machines. Beginning with the mini MXclasses, Öhlins is offering itsTTX30 rear shock that features‘big bike’ Twin Tube Crossflow(TTX) technology for use oncompetitive 50/65cc machines.TTX shocks have separatelyadjustable compression andrebound damping, and differentspring rates are also an option. For 2015 Öhlins has revised itsSTX 46 shock for use on SW andLW class 85cc machines. Theshock now has a two-waycompression adjuster, and thecharacteristics of theProgressive Damping System(PDS) have been overhauled tocontrol the forces the shockabsorber is subjected to.Riders of 85cc machines canalso benefit from the STX85cartridge kit based on theTTX22 for adult MX machines. The spring pressurised systemcan compensate for heatchanges and provide reliabledamping through every stroke. The kit has been designed torise very low above the fork legtops, allowing the forks to bemounted far up in the tripleclamps for lower bikes or forthe smaller riders in the class. When it comes to 125cc andlarger MX machines, Öhlins notonly has its TTX22 cartridgekits, but also the RXF racingfront fork. The 48mm fork hasgold anodised outer tubes andtitanium-oxide treated inner

tubes, and 2015’s developmentsinclude new seals to reduce‘fading’, and top-out noise isminimised due to theintroduction of a top-out springand rubber. A new check-valveunit helps the fork to stay up instroke without feeling too hard, which also improves the overallperformance of the front fork. For the rear of larger bikes, theTTX44 has been further refinedfor 2015 with a new reboundadjuster design for betterprecision and more rigidfeeling. It features the latest‘Twin Tube’ design with aclaimed zero cavitation risk andmultiple adjustment options.Moving to road options, for2015 Öhlins has developed apair of upgrade kits that makeit possible to add semi-activesuspension to the DucatiMultistrada 1200. The twoMechatronics upgrade optionscurrently available from Öhlinsare dependent on the modelyear. For the ‘10-‘12 Multistrada1200 S, fitted with Öhlins ECsuspension as standard, allthat’s required for semi-activefunctionality is an ÖhlinsSuspension Control Unit (SCU),which provides a set of pre-programmed smart algorithmsto constantly alter the dampingsettings of both the front forkand rear shock. By monitoringthe motorcycle’s speed, acceleration and various otherbike parameters, it ensures thesuspension is continuouslyoptimised. Owners of the base modelMultistrada 1200 can purchasean upgrade kit that includesnew forks, a new shockabsorber, a new dashboard andan SCU. The new forks are

Öhlins ‘Road & Track’, using NIXinternals and TiN-coated slidersfor minimal friction, and therear shock is a twin tube TTX. The first Ducati model availablefor this upgrade is the ‘10-‘12Multistrada 1200, but Öhlins isworking on a similar upgradekit for the ‘13-‘14 version.Öhlins road options for 2015continue with a range of partsfor scooters under the ‘ScooterPerformance Line’ banner.Available for machines from125 to 600cc, the new rangefeatures products for bothmono and twin shock models. The STX shock is available forboth mono and twin shockmachines, while the S36 is aclassic design available inemulsion, ‘dividing piston’ and

piggyback versions (dependingon application), which can bespecified with a number ofdifferent damping adjustmentoptions, with or without lengthadjustment. LEATT has become well known for its range ofprotective support braces for off-road riders, and ithas now expanded its range further with theintroduction of the brand new GPX helmet.

Leatt’s GPX helmet is a ground-up design thatintegrates a host of new innovations in helmetdesign, which the company states makes it one ofthe safest helmets on the market. The changes fromconventional design include the shell itself, which is

available in a choice of carbon fibre or compositematerials and meets ECE2205/DOT, ACU Gold,AS/NZS 1698-2006 standards. For the GPX, Leatthas reduced the volume of the outer. This change issaid to reduce momentum and rotation to the headand brain, as well as transferred neck forces. Bybringing the volume down by 20 percent, Leatt saysit can reduce the momentum and the rotationalenergy to the head, brain and neck in the event ofan accident by up to 40 percent.

Inside the shell of the GPX, rather than the moreusual foam impact protection, Leatt uses its own 3Din-moulded V-foam, which is multiple density and issaid to offer greater protection during medium- and

high-energy impacts. To help protect the wearer in the event of low-

energy impacts, the final innovation used in theGPX is the Leatt 360-degree Turbine technology. The 360-degree Turbines are small polymer discsplaced around the inside of the helmet that deformon impact to absorb energy at concussion level andimprove protection against multiple impacts. Leattstates that initial laboratory testing of the Turbinetechnology has shown a 30-50 percent reductionin energy transfer to the head at concussion level, and that the turbine design allows movement ofthe outer shell during impact, limiting the rotationalforces to the skull and brain by up to 20 percent.

Given that Leatt specialises in braces to protectthe rider, the GPX helmet features an optimised rearcut for correct clearance, a rear hyperextensionimpact platform and unique helmet rim contour to

match the company’s neck braces. An additional feature of the GPX is the inclusion

of fittings for a hydration system, and Leatt has anoptional internal hydration hands-free kit available.

SURFLEX continues to expand its line of aftermarketclutch options.

Seen here is their new Ergal clutch basket for useon Ducati motorcycles that it claims is both lighterand stronger than the stock part.

CNC machined from extruded, heat-treated Ergalbar, the basket is hard anodised for furtherperformance improvements. Although the density ofErgal is similar to that of the cast alloys used to make

the OE part, weight is saved without reducing wallthickness, and metal is removed where it can bewithout damaging the integrity of the structure.Surflex supplies the basket complete with retainingring and replacement screws.

The clutch disc kit for the Ossa Trial TR 280 is madeup of three discs that are interchangeable with theoriginal ones. The aluminium core of the discs iscovered with friction material specifically designedfor trials use, where resistance to high temperaturesand abrasion are required.

The second new clutch option from Surflex is an

anti-hopping clutch kit that can be fitted to theBenelli Tornado Naked TRe R, TRE K, TRE KAmazonas, and Cafe Racer. The new patented kitfrom Surflex works by taking part of the load off theclutch springs to introduce temporary clutch slipping, thereby avoids lock up, vibration and rear wheelhopping.

The clutch kit is made up of friction discs, plainplates, springs and disc pushing. It is not necessaryto change the clutch basket with gears. The frictiondiscs are covered with material designed specificallyfor this application use, and is the same as that usedby Surflex for clutches used by teams riding in theSuperbike World Championship.

Brembo's new Bybrecombined brake system BYBRE, Brembo's brand developed specifically forbrake systems on small and medium displacementscooters and motorcycles, has developed a newcombined braking system.Said to allow the optimum use of brakes and reducesafe stopping distances, the new system consists ofa floating front caliper with three 24mm diameterpistons. The central piston is actuated by a 14mm diameterrear master cylinder with integrated tank, while thetwo outside pistons are driven by a 12mm diameterhandlebar-mounted front master cylinder. A special valve positioned between the rear mastercylinder and the front caliper determines the pressuredistribution between the front and rear calipers. Brembo claims that it ensures that when the brakepedal is operated, the rear wheel will always lock up

before the front, providing better performance thana standard brake system. This type of system willbecome mandatory on all scooters and bikes up to125cc under new EU regulations that come intoeffect in 2016. In other Brembo news, the company says that it hasbeen awarded TÜV certification for their race-bredSupersport and T-drive brake discs - which ensurescompatibility with the latest ABS-equippedmodels.Meanwhile, the M50 monoblock breakcaliper that uses process technology introduced for500cc racing in 1994, and seen in 2011 on the 1199Panigale, has been chosen by Ducati for its twonewest and most powerful superbikes - the 1299Panigale and the Multistrada 1200S.Employing sophisticated "topology optimisation"programmes in which "iterative procedure allow

design engineers to remove material from areas ofthe caliper where it is not needed, achievingmaximum stiffness and minimal weight".Other Brembo components on the two new Ducatimodels include a fixed rear brake caliper on the 1299Panigale and a floating one on the Multistrada1200S, front and rear brake discs, the PR16/21 radialmaster cylinder and PR 15/19 clutch master cylinder.Brembo also supplies the forged wheels for the Sversion of the 1299 Panigale and a 265mm rearbrake disc with the 2x28 floating caliper on theMultistrada 1200S.Ducati has also used Brembo brakes on its newScrambler model - a single 330mm flat-bell floatingdisc with a four piston caliper at the front and a245mm disc with single piston caliper at the rear.Brembo is also supplying the brakes for Kawasaki'strack-only supercharged 300hp 2015 Ninja H2R andthe street legal Ninja H2. SHOWA made their European expo debut at EICMAthis year and showed a range of new suspensionoptions and technologies. Highlights of the product launch were its ‘BalanceFree Front Fork’, which the company says uses world-first technology consisting of a "balance-freestructure with an inline piston unit, and a ‘DualBending Valve Front Fork’, employing a dual-bendingvalve structure".The Balance Free Front fork and matching BFRC lite

(Balance Free Rear Cushion - lite) rear shock havebeen designed to cure the issue of conventionaldampers suffering pressure balance fluctuation viathe use of a new hydraulic circuit. Showa has paid attention to the outside of thecylinder of the damping force generation mechanismon the compression and rebound sides to enablesmooth and optimum oil flows. The company saysthat the resulting improvement in damping forceresponsiveness enables outstanding traction andabsorption properties. Showa’s Dual Bending Valve is claimed to achieve aperformance level equivalent to that of a forkcartridge, which enables the company to offerinnovative technology at a competitive price. It usesoriginal technology developed by Showa (a claimedworld-first) to provide linear damping characteristicsin accordance with the stroke speed, while at thesame time offering a weight reduction of 250g perunit compared to a conventional cartridge structure.Further new products include the ‘SFF-BP lite’(Separate Function front Fork with lite design BigPiston). It is a high-performance inverted front forkfrom the company’s Southeast Asian productionfacility, which makes it possible to offer the productat a competitive price. Fitting the damping forcegeneration mechanism into one fork leg reduces thenumber of parts and the complexity of the design. The ‘SFF’ (Separate Function front Fork) has beencreated for light motorcycles and small commutermodels with engine displacement of 150cc orsmaller.SFF has a structure, with its spring reaction anddamping force generation in tubes on either side, that reduces the number of parts and complexity.Using only one spring is said to reduce by half thesliding resistance with the inner tube, improvingresponsiveness and ride comfort.

Five-star SHARP ratingfor AGV PistaAGV has confirmed that its Pista GP has been awardeda five-star SHARP rating, making it one of the 331safest helmets in the world.

The award was granted by the influential UKcertification board Safety Helmet and AssessmentRating Programme, with five stars being the highestmark achievable in terms of safety.

AGV say that the technology used in the Pista GPincludes a carbon fibre shell which integrates AGV’s IVS(Integrated Ventilation System) with wide ductshollowed into the shell, and the always-open airintakes, with plastic covers, have protective metalframes and meshes.

Further features include a removable andbreathable Lycra and Shalimar fabric lining withsanitising treatment, plus AGV’s XQRS (Extra QuickRelease System) visor mechanism in metal with roto-translation opening with a visor front micro-locksystem that reduces the risk of accidental opening, aquick release system for tool-free quick removal andreplacement of the race-flat Class 1 optical standard,non-scratch and anti-fog visor with a wide field ofvision, suitable for tear-off strips.

Also seen here is AGV's entry into the modularhelmet market with the Compact helmet.

In order for the helmet to have ECE 2205, DOT andNBR homologation, it features an outer shell madefrom HIR-TH (High Resistance ThermoPlastic Resin). The shell itself includes AGV’s IVS (IntegratedVentilation System) with ducts hollowed into the shell

for improved air circulation inside the helmet. There arethree frontal air intakes, a rear extractor built into theneck roll, and two side extractors.

The company says that four characteristics make thishelmet unique: the double homologation P/J, thecompactness in the Jet position, which decreases the'sail' effect typical of modular helmets, the chin guardopening with lifting-opposite unlocking to avoidaccidental opening in the event of an impact and, finally, the ventilation system that ensures an effectiveairflow inside the helmet.
