NEwS ROOM 6-13, 40 COMMENT: Motorcycle sales growth... .....................................................................Page 4 T his year sees the ninth biennial staging of INTERMOT following the German motorcycle industry trade associations’ decision to establish it as a new alternate expo to IFMA at Munich in 1998. This will be the fifth time that the Cologne international exhibition centre (Koelnmesse) will have staged INTERMOT since the 2006 decision to bring the new show back to the German motorcycle industry’s spiritual home (in exhibition terms) at Cologne – the city where IFMA was first staged in 1964. With the German motorcycle market now showing strong signs of growth (+10.45 percent for the first six months of this year – see reports elsewhere in this edition) following the market stabilisation predicted by ACEM at their INTERMOT 2012 presentation, reports suggest that exhibitor booth sales and advance visitor ticket sales are running ahead of comparative figures for this stage two years ago. With further enhancements to the package of business-friendly initiatives for dealers and international trade visitors of all kinds (for the first time Wednesday, October 1st will be a dealer, international trade visitor and premium invited guest ‘preview’ day), expectations are of the strongest trade attendance since the recession started to seriously hit the market in 2009. Koelnmesse’s INTERMOT Project Manager Ingo Riedeberger told IDN that “the trade visitor day offers exhibitors and visitors the unique opportunity to completely focus on trade and business for one full day. “It enables exhibitors and trade visitors to precisely plan activities and to deploy staff effectively during the fair. It also provides a platform for more in-depth exchange with other visiting experts as well as the opportunity to fully concentrate on business”. There will be no outside event programme on the trade visitor day – the event programme will get underway on Thursday October 2nd, the first of the four days when INTERMOT is open to all consumers. The initiatives for dealers again include the popular ‘Dealer Card’ and the business centre and dealer lounge located between halls 4 and 5 – where exhibit space for vendors looking exclusively to make B2B contacts is also available in the adjacent Business District. Advance contact making and trade visitor schedule planning can be enhanced by using INTERMOT’s ‘Matchmaking365’ service – a free of charge online tool that allows trade visitors to request appointments with the vendors they wish to meet. Dealer Cards offer significant savings on the standard box office and ticket shop visitor prices and are available on a one day, two day or full show ticket basis. IT may sound like a paradox to say so, but the recovery we are seeingin the motorcycle market in Europe this year is simultaneously strongand weak.It is weak because in most European markets the wider economic growth forecasts

on which wealth expectations are based are still marginal (with the exception of theUK).

However, the recovery we are seeing in our market can only be described as"strong", as in most key European markets motorcycle sales growth is running wellahead of wider economic expectations in percentage terms.

This is a "good thing" of course, but it does suggest two possible concerns.First, that we don't yet know the underlying state-of-health of the public's post-

recession view of life on two wheels,as at this stage we are clearlybenefitting from built up existingdemand, rather than genuine industryexpansion in demographic terms.

Second, it has to be accepted thatwhile the wider economic recoveryremains in the zero growth to 1.5 or 2.0 percent region, then some fragility remains, with the risk of those wider economic issues yet coming back to spoil the party.

In Germany market deterioration levelled off over the past two years, and therehas been some small growth since - for the first six months of this year new motorcycleregistrations are up by 10 percent, total PTW registrations up by 9 percent.

That is a good number, for sure, but it somewhat disguises what clearly is still alarge degree of market volatility. Germany enjoyed a spectacularly good month inMarch, being up nearly 15 percent on what are usually its highest monthly volumesof the year.

In percentage terms January and February also saw spectacular growth in Germany, but on very low volumes, and June was up over 9 percent. So far this year it wouldappear that Germany has registered some 66,000 new motorcycles, compared to

around 60,000 in 2013 and around 59,000 for the first six months of 2011 and2012.

So, given that the last year before the full force of recessionary pressures hit theindustry (2008) saw some 80,000 motorcycles sold in Germany, while there is still agiant hole in dealer new unit revenues there (everywhere!), we can at least now saythat the market is following the classic stability followed by growth pattern - asanticipated by ACEM at their presentation at INTERMOT in October 2012.

Elsewhere the picture is less defined - as reported in this edition of InternationalDealer News the UK is doing well, and Spain continues to see rebound. Other majormarkets are either stable, modestly up (France and Italy for example), or have seenthe rate of market decline slow down.

Clearly, if the wider economic performance in Europe is robust, then it is not yetfiltering through into discretionary leisure spending on products such as motorcyclesin all markets. However, define "robust" - "fragile" or "unproven”, still appear to bethe operative words where macro-economics are concerned.

Although the UK economy appears to be "pulling up trees" as it powers pastthree percent annual growth forecasts (according to the IMF), it lags behind the

overall global growth rate prediction. Worse, most Euro Zone markets (and the UnitedStates) are still forecast to see annual growth of only around the one to two percentmark, at best, and at those levels it doesn't take much in macro-economic, geo-political or regional/local terms to reverse trends.

The most recent data released by Brussels based motorcycle industry associationACEM shows cumulative PTW sales in the EU up by 3.5 percent (at 675,630units) for the first six months of the year, with each month of the year so far

having posted at least some kind of growth.Moped/small cc unit sales for the first six months are off, at -8.5 percent for the

first six months, but motorcycle sales, which deliver two thirds or more of marketturnover in cash terms, are said to be up 8.8 percent for the first six months, at 493,378

units.ACEM's data shows year-on-year

motorcycles sales in key marketsperforming well. They have Spain at +20.8percent; the UK at +13.1 percent;Germany at +9.9 percent; France at +6.9percent; +4.4 percent in Italy.

So we have growth. Hurrah! Do we have increasing popularity in the overallconcept of life on two wheels? Well, that is something that we won't know for years,or until some of the manufacturers are able to release demographic data telling uswhether they are selling to returnees or new adopters.

My guess is that it is a mixed picture. Clearly there is low hanging residual, delayedspend demand to be picked up in the dealerships as wallet book strings loosen.Howeve,r common sense also dictates that some sales must be going to people, orwhatever age group, who, for whatever reason, are drawn to a PTW message thathas had considerable creativity and effort invested into it by the trade associations.

The recent and coming crop of new manufacturer products are also adding to themomentum by addressing the "un-biked" and young, especially young, urban socialmedia generation consumers for whom the traditional values associated withmotorcycling are outdated.

With the emphasis increasingly on ride character, the ownership experience andthe individual, the market is becoming better at facing a future in which consumerswill value style, convenience, economy and reliability.

With INTERMOT set to celebrate Cologne's 50th anniversary as the internationalmotorcycle industry's primary business forum with a range of initiatives that lookforward as much as they celebrate our past, expect some unexpected and imaginativenew launches, pre-production prototypes and design concepts when it opens its doorsto the trade on the dealer and industry preview day on Wednesday October 1st.

Oh, and don't forget - all IDN readers are invited to join us at the Business Centrebetween Halls 4 and 5 from 18:30 hrs on Wednesday 1st October for our nowtraditional and popular International Night industry reception.

MICHELIN is following up on its record salesin 2013 with more than seven percentgrowth and all-time high market share inEurope, North America and Asia, with thelaunch of its new Pilot Road 4 tyre. This follows on from seven new productsthat have been very favourably received inits various markets in 2013, such as the PilotPower 3 and the City Winter Grip - with fivetimes as many City Winter Grips sold morethan initially forecast. The new Pilot Road 4 is said to outperformits nearest rivals when braking on wet, slippery roads by 17 percent, while at thesame time offering a 20 percent increase inlongevity compared to the Pilot Road 3,which it is replacing.Key features include the use of Michelin 2CT, XST, XST+ and 2 AT for the Pilot Road 4 GT. Both front and rear feature Michelin 2 CT(Two Compound Technology), which employsa softer compound for the shoulders and amore resistant compound for the centre ofthe tread in order to prolong tyre life andoptimise grip. With Michelin XST (X-Sipe Technology), thepart of the tread band in contact with theroad features sipes and water reservoirssaid to slice through surface water andincrease the tyre’s water clearance capacityto obtain a level of grip on a par with thatassociated with near-dry roads.

With XST+, the technology featurestransverse sipes which improve brakingperformance, while the edges of the sipesare chamfered to help to prevent abnormalwear in extreme conditions. The new architecture of Michelin’s patented2AT (Dual Angle Technology) is the result ofa five-year research and developmentprogramme, and is said to heighten ridingenjoyment on heavier bikes by providing thePilot Road 4 GT with the necessary rigidityto optimise stability when cornering and onstraights. To enhance stability, 2AT providesa claimed 15 percent gain in terms ofrigidity compared with a conventional tyre.

BMW 'ABS Pro' for HP4BMW is to release what it isdescribing as the “first evercornering ABS for Supersports”bikes with a retro-fittable ‘ABSPro’ for the HP4. When BMW presented the S1000 RR in 2009 (its firstSupersports model) it was thefirst motorcycle of its type to befitted with ABS; that year alsosaw the first track victory by anABS-equipped Sportsportsmotorcycle at the 24-hour racein Barcelona.Continuing its investment inR&D, BMW say that “ABS Prorepresents a consistentrefinement of the Race ABS inthat it now enables ABS-supported braking whencornering”.Specifically conceived for use onpublic roads, ABS Pro is said toprevent the wheels from“blocking – even when thebrakes are applied quickly, reducing abrupt changes insteering force on shock-brakingmanoeuvres and stopping themotorcycle from rearing upunintentionally”. The system adapts ABS controlto the motorcycle’s bankingangle depending on the currentsituation on the road. Using thesignals for roll rate, yaw rateand transverse acceleration asprovided by the sensor cluster(as used for BMW’s

DTC/Dynamic Traction Controland electronic suspensionDDC/Dynamic Damping Control),as the banking angle increasesthe brake pressure “gradient” islimited more and more at thestart of the brake manoeuvre.Pressure modulation within theABS control range is said to bemore even with a sensitiveresponse, high level of brakeand ride stability and the bestpossible deceleration on bends. The ABS Pro will be available asa retrofit solution for the HP4from the end of October with anexpected price in Germany ofaround €380.

Knox gains US patent forScaphoid Protection SystemPLANET Knox, the UK-based riderprotection specialist, has received aUS patent for its Scaphoid ProtectionSystem (SPS). The US patent[US8671463] recognises the uniqueproperties of this innovation and thusprotects it from copies in America.Invented by Knox in 2003, SPSreceived a European patent[EP1594378] in 2011, and theaddition of a US patent effectivelygives this British innovationworldwide coverage.

What makes SPS unique is itspotential to eliminate scaphoid andgeneral metacarpal injury when theuser falls onto an outstretched palm,a normal human reaction that oftenresults in one of the most commoninjuries to the hand. The scaphoid is acarpal bone, which helps to controlstrength and use of the thumb.

Knox SPS works by adding twosliders to the palm of the glove, oneof which covers the general area overthe scaphoid. The second acts as abridge and stops the grab and twisteffect. The system is said to protectthe hand from compression fracturesand hyper-extension, caused by thegrab effect when a leather palm gripsthe road surface and forwardmomentum carries the rider's bodyover the hand. SPS allows theoutstretched hand to slide along atthe same speed and remain in frontof the rider’s body.

DATA released by German motorcycleindustry association IVM show thatmotorcycle registrations in June wereup by 9.3 percent (10,284 units)compared to June 2013. This increasefollows a strong start to the year, thena small decrease in registrations inApril and a small increase in May. Thisis the fifth month of the year so far tosee growth, and the 20th month ofgrowth out of the last 30.

For the year to date, motorcycleregistrations are up by 10.5 percent, and at 66,213 units this is the highestfirst half year performance for theGerman market since 2008.

In total PTW terms, Germanregistrations were up by 7.7 percentin June, and at 15,375 units for themonth that was the best Juneperformance since 2008.

Total PTW registrations for the yearto date were up by 9.1 percent at91,535 units, which again is the bestfirst six month performance since2008, with total PTW registrations

there now having shown growth for19 out of the last 30 months.

The growth in motorcycle sales inGermany continues a recovery trendfirst seen in 2012, and whichaccelerated from late 2013. Althoughsales of new small cc models inGermany continue to be sluggish, theturnover value of the growth beingseen will come as a welcome trend forGerman dealers and is already beingreflected in increased optimismamong Germany's aftermarket partsand accessory manufacturing anddistribution community.

FOLLOWING the successfullaunch of the acclaimed 1190RXsuperbike, Erik Buell Racing(EBR) has introduced the EBR1190SX, described by thecompany as "a true nakedstreetfighter-style sportbikewith uncompromised Superbikerace-bred performance andhandling".Sharing the 1190RX’s V-twinengine (rated at 185 crankshafthorsepower and more than 136Nm of torque) the 1190SX issaid to deliver "the highestperformance available in thestreetfighter category".EBR founder and Chief TechnicalOfficer Erik Buell is described asbeing no stranger tostreetfighter-style sportbikes, having defined the category inproduction manufacturer termswith the introduction of the S1Lightning in 1995. In what may be a sideswipe atthe recent unveiling of a'Roadster' design concept byBMW, Buell says that “thestreetfighter classification, which was so revolutionarywhen we first came to market,is now being used by marketingpeople for all sorts ofmotorcycles, including somethinly-disguised standard bikesthat have de-tuned or obsoletepowertrains. So, perhaps theappropriate new name for abike like the 1190SX is

‘Superfighter’."The company goes on to saythat "with so many componentscarried over from the EBR1190RX Superbike, the 1190SXis a genuine high-performancemotorcycle with a racingheritage. ARIEL Motor Company haslaunched a new motorcycle for salealongside its current car production. The Ariel Ace is the first new motorcycleto carry the classic British Ariel name in50 years. The first Ariel was a bicycle in1870 featuring patented spokedwheels, and more recently Ariel wasknown for its four-cylinder Ariel Square4 and the two-stroke, pressed steelframed Ariel Arrow motorcycles.Orders are being taking for the Ace,

which will begin production at the startof 2015 in low volume by Ariel at itsfactory near Crewkerne, Somerset, inquantities of between 100 – 150motorcycles per annum alongside theAtom sportscar. The way that Ariel builds vehicles

allows each motorcycle to be tailoredand fitted to individual customerchoice to give them exactly the bikethey want and to personalise it to theirown use and taste. From low ridingcruiser through street and nakedmachines, to super sport bikes, the Acewill be built to owners’ specificrequirements and desires. Adjustablefootrests, brake and gear lever, plusdifferent seat heights and handlebarconfigurations allow the Ace to bepersonally fitted for each rider. It is not only the fit of the bike that

is tailored to each rider, as there is alsothe choice of variants of front and rearsuspension, low and high seats withpillion options, different sizes of tanks, handlebars, wheels, exhausts, bodywork and more, as well as colours, finishes and materials.Simon Saunders, Director of Ariel,

says of the design and styling options:“Motorcyclists have a real passion fortheir machines. They like them to beindividual and they want them to betheir bike, not just another bikeidentical to hundreds or thousands ofothers. The usual route is to buy astandard bike and then add variousaftermarket components to changethe bike into what they want. However, with the Ace the uniqueness isbuilt in as the bike isproduced, and each one willbe as individual as its owner.”Talking about the

performance capabilitiesof the Honda V4

powered Ace, Saunders says: “Welooked at an out and out, superlightweight race bike, but they arealready out there, and are so farbeyond the abilities of most riders,so we took the decision to producea really fast bike that was easy toride and within the capabilities ofmost riders. Our motto is ‘SeriousFun’, and those two wordsabsolutely encapsulate what the Ace

is all about.”

The load bearing aluminium frame, made from six individual billetaluminium sections, carries the engine, various seat packages, front and rearsuspension as well as providing asafety cell for the fuel tank. Differenthead angles, via interchangeableeccentric bearing holders, areachievable to tune the rake angle from21.8 degrees to 28.4 degrees, with astandard mid-point of 25.1 degrees forneutral handling. The Ace uses the Honda V4

VFR1200 Unicam engine, which ismounted transversely, and was chosenfor its power, flexibility, compact sizeand advanced technology with aclaimed output of 173bhp and 129Nmof torque. Throttle by wire technologyhas been combined with Ariel’s fuelmapping, intake system, and Ariel’svarious exhaust systems. The Honda VFR engine also gives

Ariel the ability to offer the Ace inmanual and Dual Clutch Transmission(DCT) form. The six-speed sequentialmanual offers standard motorcycletransmission, while the DCT versioncan be used in fully ‘Auto’, ‘Sport’ or

push button ‘Manual’ mode. The Ace features front suspension

options of telescopic forks, or the ArielGirder front end. Made from machinedaluminium, the Girder fork’s multi-bearing top and bottom suspensionarms offer improved compliance andreduced stiction over conventionaltelescopic forks, providing betterresponse over different road surfacesand undulations as well as underbraking to corner.Rear suspension is by a Pro Link

single-sided, cast aluminiumswingarm, containing the shaft drive, with options of different gas damper. Front brakes are Nissin 320mm

floating hydraulic discs with six-pistoncalipers, while the rear are Nissin276mm with a two-piston caliper. Allversions of the Ace have electronic ABSbrakes together with switchabletraction control. Wheels are five and seven spoke

alloy, with the option of BST full carbonfibre and aluminium lightweightwheels made specifically for the Ace.Dependent on the use of each bike Arielwill choose from a wide range ofDunlop tyres to suit the use andpurpose of each bike. Further components, bodywork,

tuning parts and accessories will bedeveloped as part of a continuing Acedesign and engineering programme tofurther expand customer choice. Aswith the Ariel Atom, new parts will beretro-fit compliant, allowing Acemotorcycles to be upgraded over aperiod of time or as furtherdevelopments are made.

DAINESE was the first company to introducea back protector in 1981, and the latestversion from the Italian manufacturer is theManis. This new back protector is said tooffer freedom of movement, while alsomoulding to the back by elongating, contracting and flexing to adapt to theposition of the body. In order to protect the spine, Dainese’s D-TEC engineers have developed arevolutionary solution for the Manis thatfastens the protective components of theback protector so that they are not static, but free to move. The protector canelongate and flex laterally so as to protectalong its full length and can twist so as toperfectly follow all chest movements whilestill performing its main role as a backprotector. The scales that make up the outer of theprotector are fastened to a separate layerof padding and joined to each other by acentral pivot that lets them slide as andwhen needed. Lateral flexible silicone jointsprovide control and stability of movementas well as flexibility and resistance under alltypes of conditions. The padding consists of a sandwich made ofthree different materials as well as ‘CrashAbsorb’ material joined to a comfort layermade of expanded polyethylene. NATIONAL Cycle’s latest addition to its range ofVstream windscreens is a series of options for theKawasaki Ninja 300, which allows owners to use thebike as a lightweight sport tourer.

LEOVINCE has launched a new R&Ddepartment called Evotech, and thefirst part to be produced by it is theUnderbody full exhaust system for theYamaha MT-07.

This new department includes anumber of highly trained techniciansthat will lead the R&D professionals inboth the aesthetic design and theengineering solutions for maximumperformance. Three specialists lead theLeoVince Evotech Dept: an industrialdesigner, a mechanical engineer and amotorcycle technician.

The new Underbody exhaust systemfeatures an end cap that has beenconceived to direct the gases towardsthe outside and is protected withcarbon fibre, which offers a barriereffect against the heating radiation ofthe tyre. The exhaust system replaces

the original exhaust, and reduces theoverall weight of the bike by 3kg. TheUnderbody is homologated andequipped with a removable dB-killer. Itis made entirely in AISI 304 stainlesssteel, including the fixing brackets, andthe outer stainless steel sleeve issandblasted to provide a titaniumlook.
