ABSTRACT

Idiom is one of the study concentrations in translation. Idiom cannot be separated from literary works because it is used to beautify the writing. Idiom is a frozen form of which meaning is different from its individual word literal meaning. Idiom is essentially considered in translating documents. It is important to consider idiom when translating documents in order to reach the target readers language comprehension. In this case, the study is discussing about idiom happened in novel.

This research is trying to identify the types of idiom in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes novel. Furthermore, the study is also aiming to find idiom translation strategy in the novel.

This study was conducted using qualitative research design. The data was obtained from The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes novel. The study was done by several steps i.e. reading both of source language and target language text of The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes novel, highlighting and marking the idioms, and listing the idioms. After that, the idioms were analyzed and classified using Fillmore‟s typology of idiom. Moreover, the translation strategy that is used in the novel is classified by Baker‟s idiom translation strategy.

Based on the result of the study, the researcher found total 435 idioms in the direct sentence of Sherlock Holmes in The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes novel. The types of idioms found in the novel were encoding and decoding, grammatical and extra grammatical, substantive and formal, idioms with pragmatic and without pragmatic point. Moreover, translation strategies that were used in the novel are similar meaning dissimilar form, paraphrasing and omission. Another type of text will be produced the different results therefore, study to another type of text are pleased.
