Transcript of Ideas1.02
The only thing constant in life is change.
Man is too powerless to hold a reign on life, or steady its flow. His only choice is to embrace the
onslaught of change, or at least not get surprised every time he undergoes something new. He
inadvertently takes in all that he experiences, his mind becoming a haven to broken shards of
millions of memories. With every passing moment, he becomes wiser, and more stupid, for
more knowledge does not necessarily translate into more wisdom. As his age grows, his life
shortens. No two moments are ever quite the same for the only thing constant in life is change.
Dear Readers, welcome the change; don’t let it be thrust upon you. And don’t go looking for it;
it will certainly come looking for you.
Just like Ideas1.02 =).
April 2011 The mercury rose and we welcomed back load-shedding, who’s consistency year after year is
remarkable! The highlight of the month was without a doubt Britain’s Royal Wedding; Prince William
married a commoner Kate Middleton to give Britain a new Princess! Pakistan successfully test fired and
inducted the Hatf Cruise Missile (only a few countries possess this technology) into its military stockpile.
Imran Khan, who champions this country’s youth, halted NATO supplies to Afghanistan for 2 days and
was quite remarkably joined by a sizeable number of people. Pakistan’s Cricket Team hammered West
Indies in the first three matches to win the ODI series, after losing the only T20 International.

What it Takes to
Graduate?
10 Kinds of
Students
I know I perhaps have missed out on a variety of different sorts of people but then
again, not everyone’s lifestyle can be highlighted. These are examples as I perceive
taken from around the globe and reflect characteristics of students both at home and
abroad. I just wanted to reflect upon some of the categories of people that stand out,
for
“An unreflected life is a life unlived”— Socrates
One could sense that something was up because the cafeteria was missing all the
chairs and the root of this mystery wasn’t that far away as the silence was broken by
a flurry of chants that were to continue all morning. Yes! The student life center had
never been this full and neither had it been so lively and loud. The atmosphere was
electric and it did not deserve anything less for it was not any semi-final, not any
rivalry, not any Pakistan Vs India match but THE match, the best that any World Cup
will offer any time around.

Are Pakistani
Youth Giving up
Islam?
A handful of Pakistani Muslim youths are beginning to question the existence of God and in the process giving up Islam to become atheists. Although affecting a small number of people, the trend seems to be telling of pressures that the image of militant Islam has had on them.
Summer’s just started (I don’t know why my dad insists it is the spring, but coming back home from school soaking wet in sweat makes me think otherwise), and this strict routine of eating (read: nibbling tiny bits of all the good things in life) which I successfully managed to uphold all winter, is dying out as I write this, while I clean out that big bucket of ice-cream.

SHOUT OUTS
COVERSTORY
Conserving. Preserving! Overload said “Bijli ay ya na ay,
hmara dhol bajayga”. Loosely
translated it means ‘doesn’t matter
if we have electricity or not; our
drums would continue to beat’
because that is the Pakistani way!
Yes, it’s that time of the year again
when we wake up one day and
realize that this day is the hottest all
month, but no problem, our
daddies can afford air conditioning
:D But that’s before we are
reminded by WAPDA why they’re
among the most hated people in
this country - load shedding!
Summer has arrived - and tidings of
a comparatively tougher Ramadan
this year.
But one very important fact we
mostly tend to overlook while
complaining is that the load
shedding is caused by excessive use
of air conditioning in summer, and
who uses air conditions? Not the
24% that live below the poverty
line, nor those just above it. And
then there are those who own an
AC but can’t afford it much so they
only use it at night - for a couple of
hours. At the end of the day, it’s the
wealthy and the government that
consume the most electricity.
So do we give up using the AC? No,
this isn’t a sermon about torturing
yourself for the greater good; this is
a sermon about giving up a small
portion of the luxury for those less
privileged, the way Muslims do in
Ramadan, for the sake of self-
reward. Yes, do it for that inner
peace =)
Let’s call this the Ramadan-of-
Electricity (you do not get to
comment on how cheesy that
sounds =P). So here’s what we’ll do
this summer:
1) Before we sleep, we’ll set the AC
to an off-timer so that it shuts-off
an hour or two before we have to
wake up- at least. Such preserving
tactics can also be devised for
daytime use of AC.
2) We’ll cooperate with the
government in whatever policy they
come up with to minimize load
shedding- even if that involves
shutting the shops down at 8pm like
last year. If we sent them to the
parliament, let’s give them a chance
to find out what works best, ok?
3) We’ll listen to and comply with
our dad’s instructions regarding less
use of electricity- for once.
4) We’ll ask others to do the same.
Now, we can actually do a whole lot
more than the above to preserve
electricity but for those less likely to
heed, at least do this much - for the
17 crore people of this country.
Remember, it’s the little things in
life that can make the difference of
a lifetime.
Next year; Insha’Allah, we’ll build
wind powered generators ourselves
if the government doesn’t - or why
not this year? Does anyone here
own a mountain of gold?

THE HIGHLIGHTS
THE ROYAL WEDDING The wedding bells at Westminster Abbey rang as Prince
William and Kate Middleton exchanged rings and were
pronounced man and wife, and the hearts of millions of girls all
over the globe grieved. (As if they would have had a chance at
the Prince even if it wasn’t Middleton.)
Well, no ordinary wedding it was, as more than 2 billion people
were watching this historic moment which was no less than a
fairy tale. A commoner marrying the future British king was a
moment which left everyone in awe and reminded them of the
fairy tales they listened to. From the royal chariot, to the white
elegant satin gown to the Dukes’ and Duchess’ of Cambridge’s
ride on Aston Martin, it truly was a Royal Wedding! History
was made, and the whole world was a part of it.
As much as I enjoyed seeing the royal wedding, it really
saddened me to see Price William turning into a rather ‘bald’
prince. No offence to all the prince’s lovers out there, as I am
of you but it was indeed a heart-wrenching sight. However,
the ceremonies at Westminster Abbey were, as are most
things British, boring! I couldn’t help myself but imagine a
Punjabi dhol-wala amidst all the chanting of the choir. What a
harmonious collaboration it could have been with all the
guests tapping to the dynamic beat of it. Well, do not let your
imaginations go wild and leave this historical wedding at
harmony and let’s cherish the fact that we were there to
watch it live, even if it was just on our television screen :P

INFOTAINMENT
LEGEN – Wait for it! So finally people have popped out of the Indian bubble and where every Pakistani house broadcasted shows like “Kahanighargharki”, “Kashish” and “Kyunkesaas… you know it right, I don’t even want to type all of it!” now instead has a turn in the tide. People have obviously grown tired of watching the same scene again and again just broadcasted in different camera versions and grown a sense of humour by drifting to the comedy side, the best thing on the television these days.
The adults are more prone to the eccentricities of the
famous Azizi and the insatiable laughter fits of Najia while
the adolescents have taken a more avid interest in the
various western sitcoms. Long gone are the days where
“family front” was used to a household favourite, now,
the trend has been set by “Friends”, the 1994 sitcom
which became a great hit and now who doesn’t
remember the “Oh….My…. God” line (apart from those
who did not watch it)! At least now I can have a pretty
decent estimate about where the term OMG originated
from!
A good sitcom becomes an immediate success with the
likes of “Scrubs” (I always think Indians tried coming up
with their own scrubs but failed), Modern Family, 30 rock,
Office and there are so many more. Amongst the various,
one notable show that really catches the fancy today is
the Big Bang theory, an interesting dorky sitcom which
really has jumped up the ratings, even science is funny
now.
Last but not the least is the famous How I met your mother, the show which really hits off. Six seasons into the show and still the identity of the mother is unknown, Neil Patrick’s famous role of Barney Stinson and his much revered role of the playboy who “suits up” and for making the mystical Bro Code famous, the credit all goes to this hilarious twenty minute show. Drama is overrated, musicals are out-dated, horror is so yesterday and action rarely makes the day. Indeed, in such tough and trivial times for the television shows, comedy is the way to go and these sitcoms really make every minute count. Sitcoms are the next best thing on the tv, of course after Cricket! DARY! ITS LEGENDARY!
