US building statistics

The built environment has a BIG impact on our natural environment, economy, health, and productivity.

In the United States alone, buildings account for:

•    72% of electricity consumption•    39% of energy use•    38% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions•    40% of raw materials use•    30% of waste output (136 million tons/year)•    14% of potable water consumption

green design concepts

green design principles

Low-impact materials: choose non-toxic, sustainably-produced or recycled materials - little energy to process

Energy efficiency: use manufacturing processes and produce products which require less energy

Quality and durability: longer-lasting and better-functioning products will be replaced less frequently

Design for reuse and recycling Concept of Biomimicry: "redesigning industrial

systems on biological lines ... Shifting consumption from personal ownership

to shared ownership Renewability: materials come from local sources, sustainably-

managed renewable sources that can be composted
