I.D. is the first model in a new family of purely electric vehicles that are built on a completely new platform, the Modular Electric Drive Kit, or MEB, where the battery is placed in the floor of the vehicle, allowing its size to be adjusted flexibly to suit individual customer requirements. The powerful and yet extremely compact powertrain sits directly on the rear axle – for impressive driving dynamics and for optimum, highly variable use of space. This concept also gives the designers maximum freedom.

The first freedom is actively enjoying the driving pleasure yourself. The second freedom is the ability to let I.D. drive automatically, safely and comfortably.

I.D. is the first car made by Volkswagen that will be capable of fully automated driving. After pressing the Volkswagen logo, the electrically adjustable and retractable steering wheel disappears into the dashpad and blends in with the Active Info Display. The destination can be entered by voice activation, and the I.D. also knows your diary and contacts from your Volkswagen User ID, allowing the ideal route and the correct time of arrival to be calculated, and intermediate destinations like a pharmacy or a café can also be entered by voice activation. You can simply get out at the ‘car drop-off zone’ in front of the office and the I.D. goes off to find a parking space on its own. After work in the evening it is ready and waiting again, having been called via smartphone.

This is made possible by an elaborate system of sensors with ten laser scanners, four of them on the roof, as well as radar and ultrasonic sensors, cameras, a sophisticated safety intelligence system, and the real-time data from the Volkswagen cloud. The I.D. will use new Car2x technology to communicate with its local environment, including pedestrians and cyclists, thus enabling it to protect other road users, such as children on their way to school.

The I.D. is your partner on the road. It understands your voice and gestures – and you understand it intuitively. The large Augmented Reality Display guides you to your destination quite naturally and keeps you up to date with the latest information. The information, for instance from the satellite navigation system, is projected so that it appears to be between 7 and 15 metres ahead of the car and thus becomes part of the car’s surroundings that can be experienced in 3D.

An entirely new user experience.

Pressing the VW logo causes the I.D. to switch to “I.D. Pilot” mode…

The I.D. even greets its user with a friendly wink of the “eye”, thanks to the interactive spotlight design of its Matrix LED headlights. This friendly gesture is the introduction to a completely new operating and user experience.

The driver’s own smartphone acts as a Digital Key and as a remote control, and it is used to start the I.D. At the heart of its intuitive operating environment is the panoramic windscreen with large Augmented Reality Display. The information is displayed here in its real environment – driving instructions, if you are driving yourself, or service information in automated “I.D. Pilot” driving mode. The vehicle functions are displayed on a screen behind the steering wheel, and the car is primarily operated by natural voice commands or gesture recognition, for which each passenger has a personal control island to make their own entertainment, air conditioning and door lighting choices.

Even things that appear to be taken for granted have been rethought in the I.D.: in automated driving mode the steering wheel becomes part of the dashpad. In manual mode, illuminated marks on the rim of the steering wheel provide information, for example on the indicators or the gear that the car is currently driving in.

The I.D. is a unique personality in the digital world. This means full connectivity in all of its functions in real time. Every I.D. has a clearly distinguishable identity, entirely in accordance with the wishes of its driver and passengers. Thanks to the Volkswagen User ID it knows your favourite music as well as your preferred colours for the displays and interior light. From the driver’s smartphone the I.D. obtains the addresses of the driver’s friends and business associates for route planning, and it knows the driver’s appointments and plans the journey times accordingly.

The I.D. is also part of the Home-Net: the smart fridge sends its shopping list and as soon as the I.D. sets off on its way home, it turns up the heating at home to give the driver a warm welcome. Even now, this Volkswagen is able to keep an eye on what’s going on outside the front door while driving, thanks to the DoorBird app. A delivery service, which turns your Volkswagen into a personal parcel delivery man, is on the horizon, too.

Cars that are available in the car pool can be located by smartphone and you can check their current battery status and range. Using your personal Volkswagen User ID, this car assumes your identity the moment you get in: the seat is in just the right position, the right music is playing, and your personal destinations are selected.

With your Volkswagen User ID you can also update or upgrade your Volkswagen: more entertainment, more driver assistance or new comfort functions are available at the press of a button. Or you can join the largest parking space search engine in the world...

The Volkswagen mobility platform will be open to everyone, whether they own a Volkswagen or not. It learns a bit more each day and with every user, and so evolves into a comprehensive, smart network.
