Founded almost 90 years ago, in 1920, Swansea University has a long and proud history of academic success, but its approach to study is modern.

AccessibilityICWS’ flexible entry system of September, January and May intakes, enables you to start your studies at the time best suited to you, and allows you to join the degree programme of your choice ahead of students who have opted for the traditional UK academic entry system. Entry intakes for the Pre-Masters are in February and June.

Value for moneyICWS tuition fees are competitively priced among UK institutions, providing an affordable, quality education that enables you to get the maximum return on your investment. In addition, the cost of living in Swansea is relatively low compared with other UK cities, so your money will go even further.

Study in a smaller class with personalised attentionICWS promotes a personalised and supportive educational philosophy that encourages students to reach their maximum academic potential. Academic classes contain no more than around 35 students and English language classes are restricted to a maximum class size of 20. Lecturers are also available for private consultation after class.

Visa application made simpleICWS will provide you with a Letter of Admission for the entire duration of your studies, including English language tuition (if required), your ICWS academic programme and Swansea University degree.

Dedicated student support servicesICWS offers a wide range of support services for its students with a dedicated team of professionals offering advice and help 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The team provide an airport pick-up service as well as accommodation allocation and referral services. All students are provided with a full orientation programme to familiarise them with the College, the University and the city of Swansea.

All ICWS students have immediate access to Swansea University’s student online portal which houses all ICWS timetable and academic information as well as extra-curricular information from the Students’ Union and the ICWS support services and academic teams.

Where is Swansea?Swansea is conveniently located close to the M4 motorway, linking it directly with London and with Heathrow Airport, which is just a three hour drive or train journey away.

Although easily accessible to many major cities, Swansea gives the impression of being a million miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The campus overlooks Swansea Bay and the Gower Peninsula – officially recognised as an area of outstanding natural beauty.

There are excellent direct rail links to London and other major centres, and with Cardiff International Airport just 45 minutes away, budget airlines make it quick and easy to visit other European countries.

As Wales’ second city, Swansea boasts all the impressive infrastructure you would expect from a modern European city, while its beautiful seaside location makes it a favoured destination for tourists.

The citySwansea is a famous historical city as well as a very well-known tourist destination. It is one of Britain’s most vibrant and exciting cities, and is truly multicultural, with Indian, Bangladeshi, Chinese, African, Japanese, Malaysian, Arabic, and Singaporean and Thai communities among its citizens.

Situated between the beautiful coast and the stunning green hills to the north, Swansea is the ideal location to see Britain’s beaches and countryside at its best, while the city itself is a superb centre for shopping and eating out.

A thriving commercial and business centre, Swansea and the surrounding areas are also a hotbed of cultural activity, as might be expected from the region which produced the poet and playwright Dylan Thomas, the actor Richard Burton, and more recently Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta-Jones.

The University campus is home to the Taliesin Arts Centre, which hosts exhibitions, cinema screenings and live performances of dance, drama and music. The city itself boasts at least 10 museums and galleries, including the Dylan Thomas Centre – which was officially opened by Dylan Thomas enthusiast, former USA president Jimmy Carter – and the National Waterfront Museum.

For live performances there are many theatres and other venues, notably the Grand Theatre, founded in 1897, and Brangwyn Hall, which hosts orchestral and other musical events.

Outdoor lifeAs well as excellent sports facilities adjoining the campus, Swansea is host to top-class professional sports teams in football, cricket and rugby. A true sporting university, Swansea provides superb facilities and opportunities whatever your level. Professionally,

Sports Science has helped launch a number of inspiring international careers in sport. But if activity is more your game, the outstanding natural environment means you can bike, sail, run, row, windsurf ... the list goes on.

Swansea’s climateThe climate in South Wales is temperate, and in the summer regularly reaches 20-25 degrees celsius – ideal weather for the beach, just across the road from the campus. Winters are colder, and snow sometimes falls on the hills to the north of the city, but its seaside location usually protects the city itself from the coldest British weather.

The Psychology Department at Swansea was the first in the UK to be awarded the highest (‘Excellent’) rating for the quality of its teaching and learning environment. All our Psychology Degrees are validated by the British Psychological Society and confer Graduate Basis for Registration (GBR), giving you an ideal foundation for further training. Admissions criteriaGeneralThe Admissions Criteria for ICWS consists of two key elements:

1. Academic qualifications

2. English language level (where appropriate)

ICWS will consider applicants for admission once an Application Form has been completed and submitted with evidence of qualifications and English ability. If the applicant is eligible for entry, then ICWS will provide verified ICWS and Swansea University admissions documentation as follows:

An offer of entry to their chosen • academic programme at ICWS from the ICWS Admissions Office.

A conditional Letter of Admission to the • ongoing Swansea University degree programme at the relevant level of entry.

Details of any necessary English • language training required.

English Language Entrance Requirements The minimum acceptable English language levels for direct entry to the programmes are:

International Foundation

IELTS 5.5 (or equivalent)

1st Year Degree IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent)

Pre-Masters Programme

IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent)

Applicants to ICWS will be required to provide certified evidence of their English language competency; such evidence must not be older than two years.

English Language PreparationIf students do not meet the minimum English language requirements for their programme, they may choose to enrol in the Swansea University English Language Training Services (ELTS) to improve their English language proficiency.

ICWS offers ‘combined’ packages to students requiring English language preparation with ELTS prior to entering their degree studies at ICWS and Swansea University. All classes are held on the main Swansea University Campus so students enjoy the experience of studying English with access to all the facilities of the University.

The support services team also provide a dedicated phone line to ICWS students, who can call a member of staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

A support services member of staff is also present at key times in the Llys Glas Halls of Residence accommodation.

Students' UnionAs an ICWS student you will become a member of the Swansea University Students’ Union and have access to all of their services, including the sports and other clubs, student bar, and entertainment events.

AccommodationAt ICWS we recognise the importance of safe and comfortable accommodation. For many of our

students the decision to study at ICWS will be the first time they have lived away from their family

and friends for a long period of time. For this reason we offer a range of accommodation options so

that all of our students feel that they have ‘a home away from home’. This not only allows the student

to concentrate on his/her studies but also makes the experience of living and learning in another

country all the more enjoyable.

Llys Glas – University Halls of Residence with en-suite Llys Glas is a beautiful Victorian building, fully re-furbished to a high specification. Each student single room has an en-suite bathroom, radiator, large window with views of the city or courtyard, free internet access and is fully furnished. Each set of five student rooms has an allocated share kitchen. All kitchens are large and fully equipped. The building is fully serviced by the University and local council with an ICWS support services officer on duty at key times.

Llys Glas offers superb student accommodation in the heart of the city centre near to all shops, restaurants, the historic marina and the University as well as immediate access to the bus terminal and all main rail links to the rest of the UK.

This accommodation is intended for new students and is normally only available for a stay of one (1) semester. Rooms in Halls of Residence are limited, so candidates should ensure that they apply early. Students wishing to continue their stay in Llys Glas for more than one semester may apply but should note that availability is subject to demand. Many students find that after living in Halls of Residence for one semester that they will have settled down, made friends and wish to experience life in shared private accommodation.

Rooms in Llys Glas ranges in price from £1376 to £1536 per semester (15 weeks maximum) inclusive of all bills for power and water.

HomestayFor many students, the opportunity to stay with a local family, off-campus and in the community, offers a special appeal. As a homestay student, you will have the chance to be a part of the family, taking part in family activities and celebrating special occasions. It is also a great way for students to learn about British culture whilst improving their English at the same time.

Homestay normally includes two meals a day (breakfast and dinner) with flexibility to arrange three meals a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). Homestay options can be tailored to you needs and can include laundry service and the like. On average, a homestay will cost between £1200 to £1600 per semester (15 weeks maximum).

ICWS operates a referral service for those students wishing to take up homestay.

Many students enjoy the homestay option as it provides an opportunity to stay with a locally approved family and join in all that home life in the UK has to offer. You will be a part of family celebrations and have an insight into British culture at the same time as improving your English language.

Share accommodationShare accommodation is difficult to arrange from overseas. ICWS appreciates this and offers a referral service to local landlords so that you can plan your accommodation arrangements before your arrival should you wish to organise this privately.

ICWS student services will be happy to facilitate communication with local landlords. On average, shared accommodation rent will range from £40 to £55 per week depending on the location and condition of the property.

ICWS accommodation services Once you have accepted an offer to study at ICWS you may then wish for ICWS support services to arrange your accommodation in Llys Glas or facilitate referral to an appropriate homestay or off-campus shared/private accommodation provider. You will be able to indicate your preference by completing and returning the Accommodation form included with your Letter of Admission. The Accommodation form lists full details of all options and prices available to new students.

Swansea is a great place to live and provides some of the least expensive student accommodation in the UK!

Navitas bursary and scholarshipsNavitas bursaryNavitas offers financial support in the form of family bursaries. A bursary applies where two or more students from the same family study with a Navitas member institution.

The first family member can be studying with a Navitas member institution at the same time as other family members or may have previously studied with any Navitas member institution. For the purpose of this bursary, a family member is defined as a brother, sister, mother, father, son, daughter or stepchildren.

The bursary is granted to the second and subsequent family members who study with a Navitas member institution. The bursary is equivalent to 10% of the tuition fee for one program only (ie. High School, Certificate IV, Foundation, Diploma, Bachelor degree or Master degree with a Navitas member institution) and is credited to the eligible student’s tuition fee account each semester (the amount being relevant to the number of units undertaken in that semester). The bursary does not apply to additional units or repeat units that may also be undertaken.

Please note:1. The Navitas bursary is not applicable to English

language programs or any component of an English language program offered by Navitas member institutions. Please contact the relevant Navitas member institution for more information.

2. The Navitas bursary applies to students studying at ACN, CIC, Curtin Sydney,CRIC, EI, FIC, HIBT,ICM, ICWS, LIBT, MQC, MIBT, PIBT, QIBT, SAIBT and SIBT only.

Navitas academic merit scholarshipsNavitas is committed to helping students achieve their career goals by offering scholarships to outstanding students.

The scholarship applies to 50% of the tuition fee for a Navitas Diploma^ program at a Navitas college or one academic semester of undergraduate studies at ACN, Curtin Sydney or MQC.

To be considered for the Navitas academic merit scholarship, students must:

1. Have achieved a minimum average of 70% in their high school final year grades. Students who have completed further studies, must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in the last 12 months of their most recent studies to be eligible. Non-academic subjects including physical education, religion and languages are not included in the assessment; and

2. Have achieved a minimum English language proficiency of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent; and

3. Have a Letter of Offer from a Navitas college or Navitas operated university campus (must hold an UNCONDITIONAL OFFER by the application deadline); and

4. Be a new applicant (i.e. students who are currently studying with a Navitas member are not eligible).

NB. Additional factors such as educational disadvantage, membership of a specific equity group and/or significantly adverse personal circumstances may be taken into account where the committee must differentiate between equally qualified applicants.Students who are eligible to apply for a Navitas academic merit scholarship will be sent the scholarship application form with their Letter of Offer.^Diploma program may also be known or registered as Diploma Stage 2, 1st Year Degree Programme or University Transfer Program Stage 2 by some Navitas member institutions.

How to applyApplying to ICWS Step 1

International students are to complete the attached Application form, or use the online Application form which can be found at www.swansea.ac.uk/icws Students should ensure that they have read and understood the Conditions of Payment and Enrolment.

Step 2

Certified copies of all academic qualifications including school reports and official examination certificates plus English language test results (if appropriate) and relevant employment documents must be provided. Please ensure that your current name is added to copies obtained under a former name and that certified translations accompany documents that are not in English.

Copies of documents may be certified by one of the following:

The official records department • of the institute that originally issued the documents.

A Justice of the Peace or Public Notary.•

Authorised ICWS representative.•

British overseas diplomatic mission • or British Council representative.

Students applying for exemptions should indicate this on the Application form and supply successfully completed subject or module outlines as evidence.

Step 3

Send your completed Application form and certified copies of all your academic qualifications to either your agent, an ICWS contact or email to [email protected]

Step 4

If your application is successful you will receive a PDF copy by email of your Letter of Admission explaining the programme of study you have been offered (if you have applied with assistance from an agent, this will be sent by email to the agent). This letter will also hold details of the tuition fees payable and programme commencement dates. At this time you will also be sent an Acceptance of Admission form and an Accommodation Booking form.

Step 5

In order to officially accept the offer of a place you must pay the tuition fees as stated on the Letter of Admission and complete and return the Acceptance of Admission form – this can be returned by fax or email, details on the reverse of this Brochure. The amount payable is usually one (1) semester’s tuition fees.

If you wish to make a deposit payment for your accommodation or book for the airport pick-up service then please do so at this time as both services are limited to numbers.

Step 6

We do not accept payments in cash in the ICWS office. If you pay by direct deposit or telegraphic transfer, you must provide ICWS with proof of payment (such as a receipt). Please quote your student number on the telegraphic transfer or direct debit deposit.

Conditions of Enrolment

Fees1. All fees, charges and accounts will be payable

in advance as determined by ICWS. Students will not be permitted to commence or continue their programme at the beginning of any semester until all outstanding fees, charges or accounts are paid.

2. Any payments not made by the due date will incur a late payment penalty of £200 and will accrue a further penalty of £50 per week until the full amount owing has been paid.

3. Fees are correct as at the time of printing. ICWS reserves the right to vary its fees at any time.

4. Where a student studies less than or more than a full semester load, the student will pay the current per module fee for each module undertaken. The minimum load in any semester will be 75% of a full-time load unless otherwise approved by ICWS.

5. Should it be necessary for a student to repeat a module, the full amount for that module will be charged.

6. Please note academic programmes are subject to approval.

Conditions1. The student is expected to attend all classes

and undertake all tests and examinations during a programme and abide by all rules and regulations of the College that are in force at any time, see College Policies and Regulations.

2. ICWS may, by written notice, vary conditions of enrolment as necessary to comply with any law, regulation or amendment thereof, of the Government of Great Britain.

3. The Contract between the Applicant and ICWS is governed by the laws of Great Britain.

4. In the event of circumstances requiring urgent medical care where it is not possible to contact the parent / guardian, ICWS is authorised, as a matter of urgency, to seek and provide appropriate medical care.

5. International students must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirement for entry into the course. English proficiency will be tested; if the test reveals that the English language skills are insufficient, the student will be required to include a bridging English module in the first semester of study (free of charge) or enrol in either a mixed programme or an intensive English course prior to the commencement of studies at the discretion of ICWS.

Attendance regulationsThe British system of Higher Education recognises that the ultimate responsibility for a student’s educational achievement lies with the student themselves. Moreover, as the vast majority of students in British Higher Education are over 18 years of age, they are recognised as adults and a considerable amount of freedom is extended to them so that they can regulate their own studies.

While ICWS (also known as the College) fully endorses the idea that students must take responsibility for their own learning, the College does have a minimum 85% Attendance Policy which aims to limit the number of those individuals who fall unnecessarily into bad habits of non-attendance or poor attendance and ensures that good study routines are established. This policy stipulates that successful progression is based on students maintaining an 85% attendance in all classes, and as such the policy is monitored closely. Students who do not comply will find that they will jeopardize their ability to pass module/s or their programme. ICWS reserves the right to terminate the candidature to an award of any student who has a poor attendance record.

ICWS recognises that there is a direct link between poor attendance and poor academic performance by individuals. The College also holds the view that students who fail to attend classes are letting themselves and their sponsors down. Similarly, because education is a social experience, they are letting their classmates down.

All students will be apprised of the Attendance Policy on arrival and will be required to sign off that they have read and understood its implications.

Refund policy

Candidature1. For the purposes of the Refund Policy a course

is defined as one (1) semester of study in any programme of ICWS.

2. If an applicant accepts a place offered by ICWS and pays the tuition fees, it means a binding Contract is created between the student and ICWS.

3. Notification of cancellation/withdrawal from modules, withdrawal/deferral from a programme of study must be made in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICWS, see Deferment of Admission and Deferment from Studies in this document.

4. In the case of cancellation/withdrawal, the cancellation charge will be calculated as:

a. Full refund of deposit (minus any bank charges incurred) if visa application is refused.

b. 50% refund of deposit paid if cancellation is made eight (8) weeks or more before the start date and no visa application has been made.

c. No refund of deposit if cancellation is made less than eight (8) weeks prior to programme commencement or if no cancellation is made and the student fails to enrol by the stipulated deadline.

d. No refund of deposit once visa is issued.

5. Students who have their candidature to an award terminated by ICWS will not be entitled to any refund of fees paid, inclusive of any accommodation deposits, fees, levies or charges . Any fee refunds will be at the discretion of ICWS.

6. ICWS reserves the right not to offer a programme/module previously made available at its own discretion. Where a student is unable to enrol in a similar programme/module at ICWS and the enrolment is cancelled then the appropriate fees for that programme/module will be refunded.

All applicants will be provided with an Acceptance of Offer of Admission Form, see www.swansea.ac.uk/icws on payment of tuition fees and will be required to fill this in and forward to the ICWS Admissions Department.

Deferment of AdmissionIf a student wishes to defer their admission to the College until a later semester, they must apply in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICWS - see the Deferment of Admission Form on www.swansea.ac.uk/icws or contact [email protected]

Deferral will only be granted for one (1) semester unless determined otherwise by the College. If deferment is approved there is a charge of £250 at which time ICWS will hold all fees already paid (at least one (1) semester’s fees must have been paid) until commencement of the required programme actually occurs. In the event the student subsequently cancels the deferment and withdraws instead, the date on which ICWS received written notification of the deferment will be considered the date of withdrawal for purposes of the College’s Refund Policy. Failure to enrol within one (1) semester of the original application will result in the forfeit of all prior monies paid to ICWS.

Deferment from Studies (Leave of Absence)If a student wishes to take a leave of absence from their programme they may apply in writing to the College Director/Principal of ICWS no later than two (2) weeks prior to the commencement of the following semester, see the Deferment/ Withdrawal from Studies Form, www.swansea.ac.uk/icws or contact [email protected]

Students may be granted a leave of absence on certain grounds after the commencement of their second (2nd) semester. Students wishing to apply for a leave of absence after this time must seek an appointment with the College Director/Principal of ICWS. If granted, their place may be held but all tuition fees applicable to that semester will be forfeit.

A leave of absence will only be granted for one (1) semester unless determined otherwise by the College. If the absence/deferment is approved, ICWS will hold all fees already paid (at least one (1) semester’s tuition fees must have been paid) until re-commencement of the required programme actually occurs. In the event the student subsequently cancels the deferment and withdraws instead, the date on which ICWS received written notification of the leave of absence/deferment will be considered the date of withdrawal for purposes of the College’s Refund Policy.
