Mulgrave Capture ProjectPre-Combustion Capture Demonstration

• Captured 1 tonne of CO2 per day from

synthesis gas (hydrogen)

• Solvent used was potassium carbonate

• Design and built in 2007

• Commissioned and operated on a campaign basis from 2008 until 2010

• Operational data used in benchmarking process simulations (ASPEN PlusTM) used in the development of a lower cost and more energy efficient carbonate process

K2CO3 + CO2 + H2O ↔ 2KHCO3

H3 Capture ProjectPost-Combustion Capture Demonstration

• Captured up to 25 tonne of CO2 per day

from flue gas (nitrogen)

• Solvents used included PuratreatTM and potassium carbonate

• Design and built in 2007

• Commissioned and operated from 2008 until 2010

• Operational data used in benchmarking process simulations (ASPEN PlusTM) used in the development of a lower cost and more energy efficient carbonate process

Conclusions and Further Work

• Successful demonstration of CO2 capture from synthesis gas (pre-combustion) and flue gas (post-combustion)

• Valuable operational experience of capture facilities in the Australian environment has been obtained

• Plant data has been used to benchmark process simulations with an accuracy of +/- 5%

• Process simulations have been used for the further development and large scale design of the CO2CRC’s patented carbonate process

• Construction is underway for two additional pilot plants demonstrating the further technical developments in the CO2CRC’s patented carbonate process

• Operation of these pilot plants is expected to be from 2012 until 2014
