Question 1.(Do not spend more than 35 minutes on this question) [25]Write a composition (350-400 words) on any one of the following :

(a) Write an original short story that begins with the words: “It was raining hard thatnight. In my hurry to get into the house, I didn’t notice the black car parked across theroad. I realized something was wrong when………”

Ans. IT WAS RAINING HARD………It was raining hard that night. In my hurry to get into the house, I didn’t notice the blackcar parked across the road. I realized something was wrong when an arm pulled me intothe bush next to the door. I tried shouting but another big palm landed on my mouth. Istruggled with my legs but soon felt a fistful blow that made me unconscious.I woke up to loud voices of men and women screaming around me and the heat made mesquirm uncomfortably. I opened my eyes, feeling dizziness in my head and coughed. There was smoke all around me. I heard the sound of a fire engine loud and realised tofind myself in a house that was on fire.It was not my house, the things lying were not mine. This was an unknown place.I feel scared now. Looking to find a way out I pulled myself up and started movingtowards the door. I touched the doorknob and ‘aeww’, it was hot. It then struck me, thehouse was on fire and me being much inside one of the house.I didn’t knew what to do. The coughs became frequent and breathing difficult too. Ididn’t realize when I fell down unconscious. I could feel nothing, but faintly heard adoor breaking open and me being covered and carried away. The cool breeze on the skin and faint voices calling out my name, brought me out of thedeep slumber. I opened my eyes to white walls and lights around me. I felt a warm handon my palm and exciting words. ‘He is awake now !’ Moving my head towards the right,I saw the most beautiful face, my mother and tears welled up in my eyes. Feeling safe Idrifted peacefully into sleep again. My parched throat, forced me out of sleep and I mumbled softly, ‘water’, ‘water !’ I dranka few drops and opened my eyes, feeling a lot better. It felt like a rebirth.

(b) “School days are the happiest days of our lives.” Express your views either for oragainst this statement.

Ans. SCHOOL DAYS ARE THE HAPPIEST DAYS OF OUR LIVES(i) FOR THE MOTION

School was like my first home with my teachers and friends my family! I still rememberthe first day in school. No one of us crying, but playing happily and taking turns on the slide. Those were somecareless days. No worries. Learning alphabets and numbers was no big deal. Althoughthe best part was shouting our lungs out while telling the poetry rhymes. My favouritetime was spent in the little garden that had slides, merry-go-round and other play stuffs.Soon time flew past, we all were in Primary Section. I still remember those momentsvividly- all that fun-sneaking around the corridors, playing in the rains, stealing mangoesfrom the Mango Tree in our school garden and watching our play ground turn intoswimming pool. One incident that I can never forget, is the “The Rat’s Day Out.” Our Science Teacher Mrs.Kamath was taking our class, when suddenly someone from the corner of the classscreamed “Eekkkss! There a rat here”, so we all jumped on our bench-tops, moreshouting and screaming followed, but somehow Kamath Miss convinced and made us tosit at our places so that she could proceed, but we were not in a mood to listen, and everyfive minutes someone would shout that there is rat here and there to which finally,Kamath Miss got annoyed and called the peon. The class was vacated and the peons went

4 | ICSE Model Specimen Papers, IX & X

on RAT HUNT. Finally, after 15 minutes, the rat was caught, but the moment we steppedinside, the bell rang to which we all heaved a sigh of relief! One more incident I recall is when we were in 10th Standard, when our Principal decidedto take our History Classes (normally Principal sir never took classes). For a week we didsucceeded in trying hard to act decent in front of the principal, but soon got bored, moreover we were frustrated by the way of teaching of our Principal. Every day shewould revise whatever she taught the day before and then start afresh. Then one day weobserved that when one of our classmates was coughing, and Madam would stop until,he stopped coughing. There, our devil brains started working again. So from the nextday, we began our daily ritual of COUGHING our heart’s way out. Our Principal tried toadjust for week with our persistent sneezing, but ultimately she complained to our Classteacher. So the next day, our Teacher distributed Halls tablets in the whole class andwarned us all that we should not catch Cold.Seriously I enjoyed school days a lot. Whenever I meet my old school mates, suchbeautiful memories flash again and bring back smiles and tears of joy and we miss ourschool all the more, the place...where I spent the happiest days of my life.

Or(ii) AGAINST THE MOTION

It’s not necessary that the school days are always the happiest days of our lives as wegenerally think. They sometimes appear to be a nightmare. Some people don’t even wantto dream of their school days as they bring fear the mind. The first thing that terrorizesthe children is getting up early in the morning when the rest of the world is sleeping. Theanxiety begins at night only when one has to prepare the bag according to the timetable, get his or her uniform ironed and polish the shoes. They enter the bathrooms yawningand unwantedly when it’s still dark in the morning. After which, waiting on the bus stopor the tempo stand in the early morning hours on the lonely roads adds one more tag tothe boring routine life.In the class again the teachers are aggressive who pressurize the children for completingwork on time. They scold or punish the children for negligence and thus develop a kindof inferiority complex in them. They feel insulted in front of the other students if the workremains incomplete and howsoever genuine reason they give, the teacher is not going tolisten. It seems as if the teachers have descended from some other planet or as if they arefrom army who still hold the strict army rules. They are dried, rude, rough and bitter andthat may be due to their job demand as they have to face the class of mixed children butchildren don’t understand their limitations. Then there are boring school uniforms for continuous many years. The same colour, thesame pattern, the same hair style and the same footwear. It’s difficult to see the so calleduniformity daily. Everything becomes so monotonous that children lose charm inattending the classes. Apart from this, there are daily morning assemblies which childrenusually hate and try to avoid. They find different excuses to sit in the class. Sometimesthey get a diary note to be shown to the class teacher or the monitor to sit in the classduring assembly.

It’s not necessary that all the subjects are interesting for all the children. Some may findBiology interesting; some may find English and some Math. So what happens is that, theuninterested children create chaos in the class and disturb other students as there is nosystem in our country to provide only those subjects to the children in which they areinterested. So I can say that, there is one or the other anxiety always during the school time. One hasto be time bound and cannot behave or live the life of a free bird.

(c) Narrate an incident from your own experience when you helped a friend who was introuble. Explain what happened. What did you do to make the situation better ?

Ans. FRIENDSHIPHaroon and I were best friends long since we met in grade 5. He was the only friend Ihad when I moved to England with my family. We had studied in the same school and

English - I | 5

college but our path diverged as we grew up and both followed our own ambitions.Haroon became a radio jockey and I became a lawyer. Though we were far apart, yet wewould never miss an opportunity to meet each other and help each other in times of need. One day he called me that he had been arrested and I went to rescue my best friend. Ibailed him out of jail and then told me that, the previous evening when he was returningfrom his work, he had stopped at a nearby mart to buy some food items, when he saw ablack man beating up a teenager. Being a good Samaritan, he went to help the teenagerand knocked out the man. The teenager ran away.Haroon called the police and after investigation it was found that the black man was theowner of the shop and was beating the robber (the teenager). Even though Haroon triedhis best to explain to the police, what the misconception was but no one was ready tolisten to him and it appeared as he had accompanied an armed robbery and assaulted acivilian, and consequently he was arrested and taken to the Jail.Haroon was confused and shocked on what was going on and suddenly realized that hehad actually saved the robber! I believed my buddy as I knew he could never do suchmisdeed and as he couldn't afford a lawyer, so I insisted him on keeping me.Haroon had to appear in front of a court to explain his actions. The police had caught thethief who was involved and he blamed Haroon of being the mastermind of the plot eventhough Haroon had no idea of who he was! The video of the fight going outside the martwas shown which made Haroon look as the criminal. I argued that the tape of inside themart shall also be seen to prove that Haroon was innocent. Though the judge had madehis decision, yet he ordered the tape to be shown and it seemed obvious that Haroon hadhelped the robber unintentionally. The judge saw this as a case of misconception andapologized for the problems caused. Overjoyed, Haroon and I congratulated each other.

(d) There has been heavy rain in your city/town. You went to school but found that it wasclosed because of the rain. Describe the sights and sounds near the school and narratehow you finally reached home and spent the rest of the day.

Ans. MY EXPERIENCE ON A RAINY DAYMy Experience on ‘A Rainy Day’ gives me sweet memories. Rains are blessings. Rainsare a curse. If we could control rains and bring them on wherever we are in need or keepthem off as long as we desires them, of course rains would be a blessing. But as we allknow that elements of nature are not under human control, they are sometimes not to ourliking. There was a day when it rained and I did not like it.It was a holiday and I had planned to enjoy the day. I was to pay a visit to my sister atThriuttani which is at a distance of 75 kilometres from my place. Early that morning Istarted from house. Even at that hour I could see bad weather ahead. Dark, smoky cloudsgave the warning of rain. I thought I would be safe if I got into a bus. I was getting intothe bus when it started raining and it rained the way as it had never rained. Within a fewminutes everyone was drenched to the skin. None got the time to get a shelter. In a veryshort time the roads were flooded and the traffic came to a standstill.Visibility was reduced to a few meters. It poured so heavily that even the headlightscould not pierce the thick sheet of water pouring from the sky. Water collected morespeedily on roads than it went down the drains.

The stalls and the temporary structures for the shops at the bus stop dripped. Thoseinside the shops and buses were in no way better than those outside on the road, whowere getting wet in utter helplessness. It soon became worse. The stools, benches, chairsand small tables, outside the shops and stalls began to float in the rising streams of rainwater. It was a pity to see people running after their articles.A man running to catch a bench fell into a drain. He might have been swept away by thestrong current but the water itself threw him out. The poor man stood for a momentlooking dazed at the rushing water. It rained continuously for four hours and during this period all activities came to a halt. When at last the rain stopped, I was hardly in shape to carry on my journey. There washardly any time left for the return trip.

Moreover, I left home sick and longed to be at home in my comfortable bed. Hence, Icame home sad and tired.

(e) Study the picture given below. Write a story or a description or an account of what itsuggests to you. Your composition may be about the subject of the picture or you maytake suggestions from it; however there must be clear connection between the pictureand your composition.

Ans. PICTURE COMPOSITIONWe have evolved from animals and since then, we humans do have a connection withthem. Animals have been man’s best pals and they would understand you so well thatyou won’t even have to say what you want or feel. It is said very often that a Dog is aman’s best friend. The relation that you develop with an animal is lifelong and rigid unlike of that what youbuild up with man. Those having pets would be able to explain better the relation they hold with theseanimals. Animals respond back with all their love and affection and would make surethat no harm reaches us. Whether it is birds or animals, pets have a special bonding withtheir masters.

Apart from the bonding they also provide great services to their masters. Like forexample, cats and dogs are the most common pets found. Cat’s help in keeping the houseclean by killing rodents and insects and dogs safeguard the house and keep strangersaway. The sensitivity to smell for dogs has been the greatest tool used to hunt down anykind of criminal act for humans. Apart from them, even birds form a great company.Parrots are wonderful pets and they talk so much that it is real fun to be with them. Theyalso inform the owner when strangers are around.

Apart from cats and dogs, horses, elephants, donkeys, camels are all tamed and used byman for his useful needs. These animals help man in several ways and have been of helpto man for several decades. Animals also rescue men from danger. There have beeninstincts where dogs have saved small kids or old men from dangerous situations likedrowning or when in an accident. The help that these animals give could not be measured in any means and animals andman do share a special kind of bonding. Rather than seeing the commercial side withanimals, if man tries to be more compassionate with them, they would do anything forhim and maintain an everlasting relationship.

MODEL SPECIMEN PAPER–2(Attempt all four Questions)

Question 1.(Do not spend more than 35 minutes on this question)Write a composition of a reosonable length (350 to 400 words) on any one of following :

(a) If I could change one thing about myselfAns. Perhaps one of the most unpleasant feelings one can experience in life is being discontent

with self. Whereas we are prone to notice negative features in other people, we rarely turnour eyes on ourselves to critically evaluate our behaviour or personal qualities. But if wedo, we can notice many traits within ourselves that we would not like to be there. I try tostay tolerant towards the majority of my personality features. Though, simultaneouslywith my positive qualities, I can be a lazy, irresponsible, apathetic downer. I learned tolive with these and other drawbacks; but the quality that I would enjoy getting rid of ismy tendency to doubt my decisions. It is human nature to doubt ourselves from time to time. Imagine the situation when thefive best universities in the United States are willing to have you as their student. This isone chance in a million, and you know this decision could define your entire life. Mostlikely, you will not randomly point your finger at one of them and say: “I will studyhere”, you will sketch out your future career perspectives as a graduate of each of theseuniversities, and check a number of other parameters. And after intense doubts andworries, you would choose your favoured institution. This is the most reasonable approach. But in my case, I am sometimes prone to doubteven after I have made a decision. In real life, such a peculiarity manifests more ineveryday situations. Whatever I choose, I will spend some time thinking about theopposite variant. To buy chocolate milk or beer? To go to the cinema or to the theater? Not always, but more often that I would like, I start to reflect about trivial decisions. But at the same time, when the decision is made, you must start working towards itwithout hesitation. The more you think over a certain action of yours, the more likely youwill delay the actual realization of what is on your mind.Wise people teach us to be tolerant towards themselves, and accept both their negativeand positive traits. I agree with this thesis, but with one small specification: thisacceptance must not be an excuse for not working towards personal development andgrowth.

(b) ‘Guests are a nuisance.’ Describe an unwelcome guest to your household.Ans. A guest is worthy of our respect. This is what we are taught. But some guests are so

troublesome that they come under unwelcoming category. I also happened to experiencesuch a guest on 23rd October. My parents had gone to attend a wedding and I had stayedback as my exams were going on. At about 4 O’clock there was a knock at the door. Onopening the door, I found aged man with his wife and three children. Before I couldrecognize them, they entered the room. The man told me that he was my uncle.Hearing that, I felt a bit confused. My father and mother had never mentioned beforeabout such an uncle. Therefore, I was at a loss regarding what I should do. Deep in mymind, I was concerned about my Maths paper and on the other hand I was worried, if Ihad not shown proper hospitality to that uncle of mine, I might be severely scolded bymy parents. So I said a short prayer in my mind and decided that I would entertain themas best as I could for some time and, if my parents did not return till then, I wouldpolitely excuse myself.Clearly, I was in no mood to talk and that was evident from the looks that my face bore.Though I did not wish to be rude, I kept answering them in monosyllables. I gatheredafter that conversation, that supposed uncle of mine was actually a man, my father oncemet on a train journeying from Agra to Delhi. My father, being a gentleman gave him ouraddress and that was how he came there that day.God sure hears prayers as he then expressed his desire to leave our house as he had manyother places to go to and time for him was scarce. I told him that I would tell my father

12 | ICSE Model Specimen Papers, IX & X

about his visit. He left his phone number with me. We exchanged polite good night andsoon uncle and his family trooped out of the house one by one.I rushed back into my study room and began practicing my Maths syllabus once again. Itwas not long before I heard another knock at the door and I was gratified to see myparents standing there.

(c) Give your views on the “Importance of Physical Training.”Ans. Physical training is of paramount importance in the world of today. Ours is the Age of

science. We are living in a mechanised age—an age of amazing speed. Time and distancehave been annihilated by mechanical means such as trains, buses, cycles, automobiles, aeroplanes etc. Our habits have become sedentary and physical education is important forthe normal growth of the human body for an active and alert mind, for recreation andnatural rejuvenation. It is also an established programme that teaches the studentsdiscipline, obedience, cooperation, team work, spirit of brotherhood, competence andcomradene.A sound body in a sound mind is the apt saying. Books provide intellectual food to themind, religion provides moral food to the soul while physical education provides food tothe muscles, brain and brawn. The popular saying “health is wealth” gives a largemeaning to our life as health is considered the most valuable and precious for everyindividual. Good health means not only a state of absence of disease in the body but acomplete physical, mental, social as well as spiritual well being of an individual. Ahealthy environment facilitates good health but it is the unhealthy environment due toover population, excessive industrialization, air and water pollution etc. that is threaten-ing the life with many dreadful disease. In the contemporary India many people havebeen gripped by the clutch of disease like cancer, diabetes, hypertension, AIDS etc.Although people of ancient India were said to be relatively healthy, at present people aresuffering from various mental disorders also because they are racing blindly towardsfame and having only one aim in life that is to achieve the big status in society.Today competition in each field is so intense that nobody can escape from the hecticschedule of life. Physical fitness includes diet, exercise and sleep. These three basic thingshave their own importance in each individual’s life and everyone should be sensible withregard to these for a healthy life. Diet is the kind of food that we take. As our life dependsupon it we must know, how much to eat and when to eat. Therefore, one should “eat tolive and not live to eat”.

very difficult to imagine our life without a cell phone as most of our work is done usingcell phones. Everything has its pros and cons and mobile phones too have its positivesand negatives. The very first positive point of mobile phones is communication. Withmobile phones you can communicate with anyone from anywhere at any time. Now-a-days, the smartphones which are available are small in size and light in weight whichmakes it very easy to carry them. You don’t need to sit beside the receiver as your mobilephone is not attached with anything. found playing games, chatting with their friends and watching movies and other stuff. This had adversely affected their concentration on studies. Indeed, there have beeninstances of a lot of accidents in past few years. A lot of people do their daily work as wellas drive while being on their smart phones. There is a high risk of life involved if you aretalking on the mobile phone and driving as you are giving your half attention to themobile call and are having only half attention on the road. Researchers have also claimedthat these devices also have a negative impact on health of an individual. Using smartphones for long hours on a daily basis might lead to serious health issues. Hence, it alldepends on our usage of the smart phone which defines it effects. Cell phones are themost personal device to us and we should make an optimal use of the same but not in away that it affects our health and work.

(e) Look at the cartoon given and write an account of what it suggests to you.

Ans. The scene depicted in the picture deals with a theme very relevant to the contemporarytimes, i.e., the conservation of water. However, the direct message from this cartoon isthat people just speak loudly are the slogans on water conservation, they write books, they give lectures but they do not practice what they preach. In the given cartoon itappears that some important officials, connected with water conservation department, areputting up a big hoarding which has the words ‘SAVE WATER’ printed on it in blockletters. They want this hoarding to serve as a public message. They want to impress onthe public that water is a precious resource and should not be wasted at any cost. However, the irony of this situation is that right under their nose, a tap is running downand water is flowing continuously and being wasted. They do not even have the commonsense to turn off the tap.Such is the state of the whole country. Moreover the water which should be used fordrinking purpose is being used to wash clothes and dishes. People forget to turn off thetaps even when the buckets have been filled to the brim.In one part of the country, we have floods and dams should be built there to store water. And in other parts of the country there are often long dry spells and people, mostlyvillagers, have to traverse long distances to fetch water in their pots for household

purpose. All this shows bad planning and management so as water conservation isconcerned. In the garb of being comical the cartoonist has tackled a very important issue. We shouldensure that no water is wasted in our homes, schools and colleges.

Subject : Insanitary Conditions in Our LocalityDear Sir,I regret to bring to your kind notice the unsatisfactory state of sanitary conditions in ourlocality. It is a tiny hell on earth. The roads and drains are in deplorable condition. Theyhave not been repaired for the last many years. As a result, they have broken down andhave become full of holes where water accumulates out nauseating foul smell. The sweepers and the water carriers visit this locality only in a while. So, almost all streetsin our locality remain buried under rubbish and filth. There are no dustbins on either sideof the road. Wherever you go, there is nauseating smell. There is not even a urinal for the passers-by to make themselves relieve.
