I.C.S.C.C. MEMO #14 - OCTOBER 9, 1979 PAGE 1 THE RACE STEWARD'S REPORT - BILL ROOT The last race of the '79 season at Portland was a great weekend as most of you know. Most all Conference drivers were there, as evidenced by the very large entry. I thought that most of us drivers were on a budget, but several late entries were paid with this being the 2nd or 3rd time for some! The tech inspection was quite good and moved along well. Several cars were rejected due to some very latent defects. The inspectors had keen eyes and everyone's safety in mind. The race schedule went well, even with a rollover during sedan qualifying. There was some flagging confusion, but by and large, most everyone drove heads-up and slowed down. Racing was very keen and there were some dented cars as a result. After investigation, the following actions were taken: (1) #09 o/w - warned for swerving toward competitor; (2) #07 c/w - admitted error in hitting #76 c/w; (3) #10 c/w - protested by competitor for hitting the protestor and another competitor - all avoidable. Car #221 c/w was black flagged in Race Group 7 for "leaking fluid." He came in, losing important race postion. He wiped off the transmission and was allowed out again. At the end of the race, the driver protested the black flag based on no evidence of fluid on his car at the finish of the race. Denny and I confirmed this observation; however, 3 corner marshals claimed to have seen fluid leaking from the left rear of the car on more than 1 lap. Based on the evidence, we had to rule against the driver. I watched the start of each race group from the starting tower and, with the exception of Group 5 (2 extra pace laps), all groups made a good, clean, tight start. Competition Committee discussed the question of whether the Portland Enduro was the one race in 1979 for an IRR driver to maintain his number. The last race of the '79 season at Portland was a great weekend as most of you know.Most all Conference drivers were there, as evidenced by the very large entry.
I thought that most of us drivers were on a budget, but several late entries werepaid with this being the 2nd or 3rd time for some!
The tech inspection was quite good and moved along well. Several cars were rejecteddue to some very latent defects. The inspectors had keen eyes and everyone's safetyin mind.
The race schedule went well, even with a rollover during sedan qualifying. Therewas some flagging confusion, but by and large, most everyone drove heads-up and sloweddown.
Racing was very keen and there were some dented cars as a result.
