INFORMATION FOR SESSION CHAIRS, ORAL PRESENTERS, AND POSTER PRESENTERS
SESSION CHAIRS
Session chairs are listed by name on each session in the technical program. Please check to see if
you are a session chair, and if so, please identify the session(s) you are scheduled to chair. If you
have a conflict with another presentation or event you must attend and cannot fulfil your duties as
session chair, please ensure that another person will be present to assume those responsibilities. It is
important that session chairs maintain the schedule as indicated in the technical program to allow the
participants to see the papers that they want to see at the time they want to see them. If you are a
session chair, please do your best in the following areas:
1. Come to the room for your session early and if possible identify each of the speakers before the
session begins.
2. Provide each speaker with 10 minutes of presentation time and 5 minutes to allow for questioning
and transitioning to the next speaker.
3. Do not allow speakers to extend over their time slot, nor allow questions to extend into the next
speaker’s time. If there are additional questions, these can be handled during a break between
sessions. Use your best judgment to balance the need to be fair to the presenter’s time and to the
participants’ time.
4. In the case of paper for which no author or surrogate is available to present (“no show”), please
either use the time for an open discussion of previous paper or questions, or break for 10 minutes
and then reconvene. Although significant effort has been made to reduce the number of no-shows, it
is always possible that some will occur.
ORAL PRESENTERS
You’ll find your presentation time(s) in the technical program in this booklet. Please locate your
times and places and ensure that you know where to go and when to be there. Please ensure that you
show up early for your oral presentation and identify yourself to the session chair. Please also ensure
that you are as prepared as possible to make your presentation when it is your time. Do not go over
10 minutes for your presentation, allowing for 5 minutes of questions and transitioning to the next
speaker. Follow the instructions of the session chair. In the event that a session chair does not show
for a session, the last speaker should serve as session chair. In the event that this is not possible,
please identify a volunteer in the audience to serve as session chair, or at a minimum identify
someone for each speaker to ensure that each presentation stays within the allotted time.

POSTER PRESENTERS
The poster sessions are scheduled in the Poster Hall. There are no other technical presentations
scheduled during these times. Poster boards are already prepared, and you will be able to start
assembling your poster presentations during the coffee breaks. Each poster board will have a
number pinned to it. To find the number that corresponds to your poster, please go to the poster
paper index in this book. This is also printed next to the paper entry in the main program.
COFFEE AND REFRESHMENT BREAKS
Coffee and refresh will be available for the break each day at 10:00-10:30 and 15:30-16.00 at the
poster Hall.
SOFT COPIES OF THE PROCEEDINGS
Each registrant receives a soft copy (CDROM) of the ICRAES’18 edited proceedings with
following ISBN: 978-9938-9937-1-4.
IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM FOR any conference-related problem, please contact any

Keynote Title: Computational Intelligence Technique-Based Development and Control of
Electric Motor Drives for Motion Control Industry
ABSTRACT
A self-learning fuzzy-neural-network PI-and PD-type control design is offered to replace the
industrial PID controller, adds a self-learning capability to the initial fuzzy design for operational
adaptively, and implements the solution on real hardware using an industrial test-bed system. At
first the proposed solution is to use fuzzy logic-based decision structures to mimic the PI and PD
elements of a PID controller in parallel. The fuzzy decision engines seek to improve response by
executing custom actions per the combinations of fuzzy sets of the input parameters to the logic.
Operational knowledge of the physical meaning of the fuzzy input set combinations and the
necessary control response form the basis for the fuzzy rules design. Then, a fuzzy-neural-network
ICRAES’18, Hammamet, Tunisia Dec. 23 – Dec. 25, 2018
9
(FNN) structure that mimics fuzzy logic replaces the fuzzy logic in the control design and allows for
the capability for adaptive self-tuning of the weights and memberships of the input parameters. This
leads to selection of a learning algorithm for training the networks. The design implements
the novel use of the extended Kalman filter (EKF) to train FNN structures as part of the PI-/PD-like
fuzzy design. The presence of adaptive control via the EKF learning of the FNN control laws marks
an improvement over the FL design. The benefits of the adaptive control providing access to the
fuzzy rules online and the proper execution of the updates are improved control law maintenance
operations.
A dSPACE digital signal processor (DSP)-based data acquisition and control (DAC) system is
chosen as the main interface between the controlled system (process) and the host computer. The
software associated with the dSPACE DSP-board consists of the following:
• MATLAB/Simulink, a Window based analysis environment from the MathWorks.
• A Real Time Workshop (RTW) Window interface between the MATLAB/Simulink
environment and the dSPACE DSP-board
A test bench enables design implementation in the laboratory on hardware using a dSPACE DS1104
DSP and MATLAB/Simulink environment. Experimental testing results show that the proposed
controller learns and robustly responds to a wide range of operating conditions in real time. The
motor drive over time is subject to experience degradation of mechanical parts or even electrical
characteristics, and the ability to automatically adapt the control laws to these changes is a feature
that a non-adaptive fuzzy controller does not have.
SHORT CV
Ahmed RUBAAI, received the M.S.E.E degree from Case
Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH, and the Dr. Eng.
degree from Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH, in
1983 and 1988, respectively. In 1988, he joined Howard
University, Washington, DC, as a faculty member, where he is
presently a Professor and Chairperson of the Electrical
Engineering and Computer Science Department. Dr. RUBAII
has been named an IEEE Fellow in 2015. As an Educator, Dr.
RUBAII has been an acknowledged educator and leader of
curriculum development at Howard University for more than
two decades. He is the Founder and Lead Developer of Motion
Control and Drives Laboratory (http://www.controllab.howard.edu) that provides engineering students
with valuable hands-on and "real-world" experiences.” In recognition of his scholarly work and
dedication to the improvement of engineering education, his work is recognized by the larger
community of engineering educators, as verified by his receipt of the 2011 ASEE Robert G. Quinn
Award and the Distinguished Educator Award of the Middle-Atlantic Section of the American
Society for Engineering Education. This recognition is a clear demonstration and confirmation of his
peers’ high regard for his contributions to engineering education.
As a researcher, Dr. RUBAII has made significant contributions to the development and control of
electric motor drives for industrial system applications in a variety of roles including: scientist,
research engineer, university professor, and as IEEE volunteer and leader. The large majority of

these contributions are heavily oriented towards industrial applications that IEEE serves. Of
particular importance is his development of control technologies by way of intelligence; laying the
technological foundations for the production versions of high performance drives used in an
expansive array of industrial, commercial, and transportation applications today. His work covers a
broad range of manufacturing and product applications and exemplifies his ability to bridge between
academic research and the application to industrial applications. The bridges that Dr. RUBAII has
built between industry and academia represent a uniquely valuable contribution that can be matched
by very few others in the academic world today.
