3-1945) - Italian prime minister (1922-1943) and one of the first 20th century European fascist dictators. Il Duce

• Son of a blacksmith, journalist - poor boyhood. Turned out to be a unruly at school and moody at home. Intelligent, self-taught, articulate, and eloquent.

• Political journalist and public speaker first for left-wings and then right-wings.

• Amid the political, economic crisis following WWI, Mussolini formed a political party consisted of republicans, anarchists, disillusioned socialists and frustrated revolutionaries.

• Vittorio Emanuel III, king of Italy, gave in the fascist threat and appointed Mussolini as prime minister.

• The Allied invasion started in 43.• Mussollini was dismissed by the

Fascist Grand Council and then arrested.

• Rescued by German troops and a puppet government was established in Saló, northern Italy with Mussolini its nominal head.

• German defenses in Italy collapsed and Italian Communist partisans arrested Mussolini and executed him with his lover.

• Adolf Hitler (1889-1945) - leader of the National Socialist (Nazi) Party and the Chancellor (1933) and Führer (1934).

• Hitler lost his parents when young and received only modest education.

• Hitler made an alliance with a nationalist, Alfred Hugenberg in 1930 and began a newspaper propaganda - national recognition.

• Steady rise of the Nazi Party and in the 1930 election it won 18% of the vote and Hitler 36.5% in the presidential election in 1932.

• In 1933 Hindenburg, the president, offered Hitler the chancellorship of Germany.

• Road to dictatorship - after the fire at Reichstag all civil liberty was suspended and violent campaign against communists began.

• In the 1933 election the Nazis polled 43.9% of the vote.

• The bill was passed to give Hitler full, absolute powers.

• In three months, all non-Nazi parties, organizations and labour unions ceased to exist.

• Hitler left domestic politics to his deputies and took initiative in foreign policies.

1984) - American freestyle swimmer, who won 5 gold medals and set 67 world records. A famous motion picture actor, notably in the role of Tarzan, who was abandoned as an infant and reared by apes. He starred in 12 Tarzan films between 1932-1948.
