iCloud(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICloud)
Was launched on October 12,
2011.
A Cloud Storage &
cloud computing
service
The service provides its users with means to store data such
as documents, photos, and music on remote servers for download to iOS, macOS orWindows devices, to share
and send data to other users, and to manage their Apple
devices if lost or stolen.
The service also provides the means to wirelessly back up
iOS devices directly to iCloud.

• It replaced Apple's MobileMe service
➢acting as a data syncing center for
❖ email, contacts, calendars, bookmarks, notes, reminders (to-do lists), iWork documents, photos and other data

located?(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICloud)

centers is located
in Maiden, North Carolina,
US.
Beginning in 2011, iCloud is
based on Amazon Web
Services andMicrosoft
Azure.
(In 2014, Apple acknowledged that encrypted iOS files
are stored in Amazon
S3 and Microsoft Azure).
In 2016, Apple signed a deal
with Google to use Google

iCloud Privacy & Security
All your iCloud content —like photos, documents, and
contacts — is encrypted when sent over the Internet
and, in most cases, when stored on Apple’s servers
If Apple uses third-party vendors to store your information
• It is encrypt and never shares the keys
• Two-factor authentication helps to ensure that the important information in your account can only be accessed by you, and only with your devices
15
iCloud Keychain

iCloud.com Yes N/AAll sessions at iCloud.com are encrypted with TLS 1.2. Any data accessed via iCloud.com is encrypted on server.
Back to My Mac Yes N/ADoes not store data on iCloud. Data retrieved from other computers is encrypted with TLS 1.2 while in transit.
Mail Yes No
All traffic between your devices and iCloud Mail is encrypted with TLS 1.2. Consistent with standard industry practice, iCloud does not encrypt data stored on IMAP mail servers. All Apple email clients support optional S/MIME encryption.

• Transport Layer Security (TLS) is a protocol that provides privacy and data integrity between two communicating applications.
• TLS evolved from Netscape's Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) protocol and has largely superseded it.
• Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Reminders, Safari.
• iCloud keeps your Apple and third-party apps updated with the latest information on all your devices.
• When you delete an email, add a calendar event, update a contact, or check off a to-do item, iCloud makes the changes everywhere.
• Start surfing on your iPhone and pick up where you left off on your Mac or iPad — or vice versa.

iCloud Pricing

• iCloud is the obvious solution to anyone who exclusively uses Apple.
• In principle, it meets the Just Works criteria:
➢ activate it on all your devices, and you get easy access to all your data –
❖ from calendar, notes and photos through to iWork documents.
• Your iOS devices also get automatically backed-up to iCloud at the flick of a virtual switch.
• It requires no setup, no effort.
➢ You also have a big range of storage tier options than other services, from 50GB at the lower end to 2TB at the top end.
iCloud Pros
21
• If you need the 1TB option, which is the most likely tier for those making substantial use of cloud storage,
➢ iCloud is a little more expensive than most competitors given that Apple offers no discounted annual subscription.
• iCloud seems to suffer more outages than competing services, and can be glitchy.
➢ For example, it can take several minutes for a new file or edit on one device to show up on others.
• Finally, iCloud is clunky to use from non-Apple devices.
