“STUDY ENHANCEMENT AREA”

Page 2: ICI FINAL PROJECT

What is a study enhancement area?

An area that is used to further improve the quality and value of something, in this case, the proposed stimulus would to improve condition of the area in which one is needed to study at or in. The surroundings in which we try to absorb knowledge or information, greatly weaver our capabilities to absorb information or to do work. Depending on the individual, the type of area is crucial, based on this we need to come up with a concept that meets as many of the requirements of such individuals in times of studying or working.

Current study area (outdoor)

Lacking interception, which deems this place unsuitable for an outside study area.

Extremely monotonous and boring, lacking the proper vibe and furniture as well as the appropriate feel good colors. Furthermore the tilling or flooring does not contribute to the proposed theme of an outdoor study area

Page 3: ICI FINAL PROJECT

The entrance to the site, is nothing spectacular or aesthetically pleasing, furthermore the location of the area, situation right besides the library, this would allow the ease of access as well provide the alternative from studying indoors, as this would be the first proper and adequate study area that Taylor’s University would possess

Currently the aura of the site is far from appealing and drives

away the crowd in many ways, still however, the reason

there is any crowd is due to the lack of space in the library,

to combat this, the

current area will be equipped study friendly and aesthetically pleasing features

Proposal

A working space needs to be divided into 4 sectors such as:

Discussion rooms for groups to want privacy to them selves

Private study areas for individuals who want privacy to their selves (encapsulated)

Group work areas for groups that don’t mind the noise and are more adaptable to the lack of privacy and open space

Individual study areas for those people who don’t mind the openness of studying

What can we do over come this?

Accessibility

Aesthetics (colors, flooring)

Unique furniture

A chilled and relaxing environment

Interactive spaces

Well-planned study areas

Serene surroundings

Grass flooring and elongated study areas, for those that require a conference type discussion and/or any particular type of discussion, the grass factor adds to the theme of being outdoors and provides a sense of bight flooring that attracts the populous towards that particular area. The use of simple but innovative furniture would also make the area more usable and not seem

Personal domes that allow the user to be cut off and isolated from the rest of the world, to allow utter focus and concentration, a feature and furniture that we plan to showcase and feature within our site, indeed it does consume quite a bit of space, however it benefits the individuals that seek the need to cut off from the hustle and bustle of the noisy and busy university life. Furthermore, the presence of lights within the dome, would allow late night study sessions as well, with availability of power points and etc. The various colored lights within, would also give the user a more better and fun environment to study within.

over complicated. However the lack of lighting out side and the exposure of the furniture to open air, would require a routine maintenance schedule.

Much like the grass flooring, wooden flooring will also be included within the study area, it creates a sense of homeliness that every study area requires, furthermore the reflection of the sunlight upon the flooring would greatly increase the appealing factor of the particular area.

The use of various beanbags would give the area much more character and contribute a fun and interactive feel to the area. Its ease of access and comfort ability would make this particular very unique, as well transform the monotonous aura into a rather colorful and inviting one. It would then also become a ‘hot spot’ for socializing while being able to do work and study collectively.

The use of combined sofa furniture would be a great use of space and allow large numbers of people to use it at once; the efficient use of space would save both cost and time to install. The allocation of the furniture piece however is crucial, and possibly being located next to the cube glass would attract the users to that particular section more.

An enclosed group study area is crucial for those who require the area, the availability of this particular option would increase the number of student attracted towards the area and provide various choices as to which area would suit their needs or tasks with the given task at hand.

Site specifications/conditions

Sandwiched between two blocks, C and D, a natural overcasting shadow is present almost all day keeping it cool. The morning sun from the west leaks into the site from the gap at the other end of the block. The evening sun gets blocked out by the roof and the shade above. In the evening the sun hides behind the commercial block. No direct sunlight reaches the new study area.

The opening towards the lake redirects the course of wind onto the site while allowing natural light to flow in, giving the impression of proper design planning by the architect. Subtle breeze is to expected throughout the whole block.

Temperature fluctuates, following the seasonal climate. In the event of a rainfall, the site gets wet as there is no proper shelter for cover. Hailstones, snow and other precipice-based phenomena are not, and never present in Malaysia.

The area is accessible only by foot, by a connecting walkway through all the blocks and from the library entrance. No doorways are present and a small bridge over a void overlooking the lower floors connects the site to the walkway. Stairs are placed in every block to ensure easy access whereas the current block has 2 easy access stairs close-by.

A stall is propped up adjacent to the bridge connecting the walkway to the site, selling food and beverage. Stalls run throughout the lower floor, Floor 1. The Taylor’s Library is a step away from access and so does the 24/7 Study room. Water and snack vendors are strategically placed along pillars and walls throughout the blocks for quick purchasing.

Other than the constant hum of the bustling students, the quacking ducks and the occasional loud vehicles from the road behind Block C, no other dissonance is detected on site and it can be deduced that the area is noise pollution free.

Page 9: ICI FINAL PROJECT

As proposed, the area is to be divided into 2 sectors with 2 sub-sectors each, from private to public. It is arranged such that the private sector is built against Block D and the more public areas built against Block C.

Rationale

The reason we’ve proposed to build a cube like structure of glass around our 30m x 30m is to provide an aesthetic feel good feeling in times of studying, it also stipulates transparency externally and interior wise, the reason the glass cubicle was chosen to surround the perimeter is to create a sense of freedom. It provides both aesthetics and technicality. For instance during rainy days, there would now not be a problem for the populous to study or work outside, as there is now an interception. It also now allows the monitoring of temperature with the installation of an eco friendly cooling system.

Furthermore the flow of the water along the 4 sides of the vertical façade would look great and allows the people inside to feel more connected to the area. It creates a sense of relaxation. Moreover the people would be overcomed with curiosity what it’d be like to study inside a transparent cube. Especially in times of rain, as it’s a major part of Malaysia’s climate.

Moving on, the internal design of the 30x30m space will be filled with study friendly furniture that will be specified for the 4 types of sectors of study types mentioned above. According to which the spacing and layout will be planned accordingly.

The reason study friendly furniture will be used is to postulate the identity of the prescribed area, which is a study area. The furniture should emphasize the sense of togetherness as well as provide privacy and meet the demands of the community.

Needs of the project to the client/the community

In project proposals or a technical proposal, often called a ‘Statement of Work’, a persuasive approach is to be assessed in order to sell your project. A strong proposal has an attractive, professional, inviting appearance with a well-organized plan of attack. In addition, the information should easy to access. Criterias and needs should be listed in a proposal to introduce an aspect of challenge for the project buyer, while accomplishing solutions for the current problems and needs of a surveyed project.

Several underused areas in Taylor’s hold potential in being a study area. It has come to my attention that the platform fronting the lake along the Library entrance holds an inherent quality of being an awesome place to fucking study. A set of criteria have to be met for a potent and successful enhancement of the proposed area.

In response to the growing community of this institute, 1. Space to study while relaxing2. Outdoor study area in contrast to indoor study conditions such as

the existing library3. Communal area of gathering/discussing/studying4. A more lenient place of study with no noise limits5. To cater to the increasing number of the student body6. An alternate private space when the 5th floor of the library closes

off after 6 p.m.

Additional beneficial elements to existing structure,1. A water catchment area2. Natural cooling area3. A functional space integrated into the building considering site

conditions (shading, wind direction, etc.)

The new construction, should we proceed, should meet these requirements as agreed by the council in consideration of the multitude of problems to be solved upon completion.

Page 13: ICI FINAL PROJECT

These requirements will be explained in detail in the following phrases.

1. The space will be completely renovated with the addition of a glass dome above as a water catchment system to redirect water flow (rainfall etc.) and as a natural temperature regulator.

2. The space will be divided into 2 sectors, private and public, with 2 sub-sectors each, group and individual. Contained units are to be built for the private group discussion rooms and Google HQ-esque cylindrical pods for the private individual room. Open tables, couches and bean-bags are to be issued for the public study sector.

3. A community bookshelf will be placed around the site for books, magazines etc.

4. Students can use the glass to scribble down thoughts or notes using whiteboard markers.

5. The opening facing the lake will be open to allow proper air circulation and a sense of wide, open space.

6. Furniture should be assessed before placement to ensure a thematic visual.
