Next summer we will celebrate ICHRIE’s 72nd Anniversary as a professional association. While a

The ICHRIE board of directors—under the direction of our new ICHRIE President Dr. Amit Sharma—has been focusing time and attention on our list of priorities for the products and services we provide members in the coming year. Each board member was asked to develop a list of priorities for the

2017-2018 timeframe and we are beginning the process of determining how to make this long list of goals a reality.

With the growing percentage of our ICHRIE membership being millennials, it is clear we will need to recognize and include this latest generation’s values, attitudes and lifestyles into any planning process we undertake to achieve our organizational priorities. And millennials appear to have reinvented what to expect of the future.

Much attention has been focused on the unorthodox things that young people supposedly care more about than their older colleagues. An IBM study discovered, however, that millennials want many of the same things their older colleagues do. There may be different preferences on smaller issues but when it comes to overarching work goals, millennials are nearly identical to their more experienced colleagues. Millennials view the workplace through the same lens of new technology as any other aspect of their lives: instant, open and limitless. The era they have grown up in has shown them that nothing is a guarantee. Instability and rapid change are the norm. To millennials, time no longer equals money. It is a limited resource to be spent wisely and actively managed.

To remain competitive, businesses need a fresh approach that reflects new values, attitudes and lifestyles. Today’s younger generation lives in a world where physical presence is optional. Banking, renting movies, hanging out with friends, going to school and ordering dinner have all transformed from a ‘place you go’ to a ‘thing you do’ from any connected device. Millennials view work in the same way; not to be measured by hours at a location, but by the output of what you do. Millennials are leading the way in prioritizing job flexibility.

Millennials don’t just want to spend their time earning a paycheck; they want to invest time acquiring the skills and knowledge they need to grow both personally and professionally. This is a revolutionary shift from the traditional sense and the best training programs today are rich learning experiences that tap into employee interests, passions and career goals.

Finally, more so than previous generations, millennials place great importance on social causes and sense of purpose. Millennials want to know how their daily labors are aligned to what the company is doing as a whole and if a company’s concern with social responsibility matches theirs. In the most recent Deloitte Millennial Survey, six in 10 respondents said “sense of purpose” is part of the reason they chose their current employer.

What has long been hailed as ‘the future of work’ is already upon us, and International CHRIE has to move forward right now to meet the values of our most valuable asset–our members.

“Different roads sometimes lead to the same castle.” ― George R.R. Martin, writer, inspired Game of

Thrones series

While writing my first Communique article, I am embarking on two highly anticipated events: 1) the 2017 ICHRIE Annual Conference hosted in Baltimore, MD, USA and 2) the seventh season premiere of the wildly popular HBO cable series “Game of Thrones” (GOT). Based on the book series A Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin, the books follow several “houses” in fictional worlds whose members are at various places in life trying to accomplish different goals. The houses are usually located in various regions located in the north, south, central and west. While this is one very small piece of an intricately, complex storyline, I learned some big lessons regarding leadership and strategy from the show and serving one year as Vice President of NENA. My Top 2 learnings are:

Lesson #1: Dragons are the AnswerWell maybe not real dragons, but knowing what sets our region apart and making NENA special was crucially important. It was important to trust the diverse strengths of each member of the 2016-2017 executive board to help the federation achieve its goals. Our federation was led by David Schweiger (President) who guided the federation through Alligator Hour on Sunday, November 13, 2016 during the HX Experience in New York, NY and a successful 5th annual regional conference March 31st – April 2nd, 2017 hosted by Temple University, School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management in Philadelphia, PA, USA. The central region remained strong with Jennifer Forney (Secretary), Shaing-Lih Chen McCain (Director of Education) and Ronisha Goodwin (Director of Industry Relations) keeping the federation up to date with great communication and a focused regional conference program that aligned with the conference theme “Pursue Your Educational Happiness”.

Lesson #2: Be Good at StrategyWhen planning strategy, first refer to Lesson #1 and second be willing to listen to others. Be open to feedback, criticisms and possible changes in direction. Suzanne

Markham Bagnera (Treasurer), Tarik Dogru (Director of Research), Paul Bagdan (Director of Membership) and Rick Lagiewski (Director of Marketing) set a new bar in fiscal and research accountability while extending hospitality to our members, conference attendees and sponsors. As a result, our conference attendees included members representing academic institutions, workforce development organizations and international attendees. Awards were given to poster presenters for innovation in both concept and delivery.

Additionally, two NENA members watched over us when they departed to the National ICHRIE board, but made sure we were supported with knowledge. Ajay Aluri and Ruth Lee O’Rourke…we thank you. Theresa Lind (Director of Networking) kept the federation communication going with registration updates, Alligator Hour information and social media posts while also serving on the planning committee for the 2017 ICHRIE Annual Conference.

Thank you again to each person who served and for each member who participated in events and discussions throughout the year. Each persons’ individual strengths, when combined, achieved the goals set forth over the last year. During our annual conference, we will have the opportunity to officially welcome new members and thank returning members of the NENA Federation executive board. But for now, I would like to introduce the 2017-2018 NENA Federation of ICHRIE Executive Board:

Do as Thumper Said, “Say Something Nice”Michael Wray is President of West Federation of ICHRIE and Professor at Metropolitan State University of Denver.

If you are like me born at the end of the “baby boom” we grew up with

a famous saying from Thumper, the precocious young bunny from the Disney Movie, Bambi. Thumper did not have much of a filter on his outbursts and criticism of others. He was quick to point out that the newborn Bambi “doesn’t walk very well does he.” His mother instructively asked him, “what did your father tell you this morning?” Thumper replied, “if you can’t say something nice, don’t say nothing at all.” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I71cY9Ysy5U

say nothing… say something nice.” I am suggesting that when we are in those awkward silence situations when we ourselves or peers seem to be holding their words back, we could help our colleagues move forward by employing a slight twist on Thumper’s advice, whereas “if others are saying nothing… say something nice.” In the coming year as we interact with our colleagues, rather than sitting quietly through awkward silence, we could think of something nice to say and sincerely note the achievements of our peers. Nothing seems to break the ice and start a critical inquiry of our performance than “saying the nice things” that others have achieved. Perhaps the nice things in life too often go unsaid.

For me, as the outgoing President of West Federation CHRIE, I know that I have shortcomings and some work was left undone. I also know that we have room to improve as a federation. Rather than starting a conversation about the undone tasks and where we went wrong, saying “nice things” about my fellow officers is not only easy, it is the right path to take toward our growth as a federation. In this past year, we have accomplished much to foster scholarship amongst our peers and share in best practice. The bulk of our efforts this year centered on organizing and conducting our annual conference thanks to our gracious host, Carl Winston, and his team at the L. Robert Payne School of Hospitality at San Diego State University.

To encourage shared scholarship at the conference, two key roles were the Director of Research, Karen Xie, and Education, Yung Ying Zhong. Karen got us rolling quickly by using her organization skills to get us online with the EasyChair automated review system. I learned that asking for help was a good idea. Our Past President, Michelle Millar, was very helpful in getting our web-based registration organized. We were off to the races quickly with new automated submissions and multiple reviewers stepping up to provide feedback (and criticism) of our colleagues scholarly inquiry.

To me, I thought the hard part was over when we had our registration going. I thought wrong, because we were planning our first conference outside of a host school which required contracting a hotel, multiple vendors and a myriad of detailed event planning for our largest ever 92 person conference. I was drowning in details when three “right hands” emerged in Matthew Stone, Director of Industry, Thomas Padron, Treasurer, and Patrick Lee, Director of Networking. The email exchange was feverous. I cannot thank these gentlemen enough for their quick responses and guidance.

I have been thinking of this well-worn advise lately and noticed that in the interest of collegiality sometimes we hold back our comments when interacting with peers because there seems to be an innate fear that making ”not nice” comments is one of the social pariahs that can permeate rather stressful meetings and degrade interpersonal relationships. As I continued thinking, I wondered, if we hold back our inquiries and criticisms of others’ ideas that we may sit quietly and tend to say nothing. Without saying anything, I am unsure how we progress and improve upon shared objectives. If our colleagues are all doing as Thumper advices—not criticizing, not questioning, and not identifying things left undone—then how do we know what we need to fix? How can we change and employ innovation if we don’t identify some “not nice” aspects of our own and peer performance? I would like to encourage our readers to switch up Thumper’s advice and suggest that when “others continued on page 9

consider that ICHRIE will be celebrating 72 years, and many organizations never get that far. For example, the number of ICHRIE member schools that predate ICHRIE’s founding can be counted using just your hands.

You were probably wondering when I would get around to mentioning the CHRIE FutureFund™. We started CHRIE FutureFund™ barely twenty years ago. Why—because a group of us believed in the future, and what ICHRIE could mean to those who would follow us. We wanted to ensure that ICHRIE had a source of funding to provide opportunities for the members of the future. We have already provided support for a number of ICHRIE member-related activities, and it is likely that CHRIE FutureFund™ will support many more in the coming years. There is a rule common to investing called the rule of 72. Its basis is that of compound interest. I prefer to call it exponential growth. When you observe what ICHRIE has become since that first gathering in Chicago in 1946, you quickly note the power of exponential growth. Please join with the CHRIE FutureFund™ to continue our trajectory of exponential growth, so that the ICHRIE members of tomorrow (think 2090) will thank the ICHRIE members of 2018 for being future-oriented.

I look forward to serving as the 2017-2018 NENA Federation President for the next academic year. I welcome any NENA member to reach out to me at [email protected] or 01 (202) 784-7365.

At the conference we entered a new generation of social media thanks to Alice Swift’s work in getting us a website and social media handles all under the www.wfchrie.com brand with the same handle, “WFCHRIE” on facebook, twitter, and snapchat. She was omnipresent at the conference snapping photos, updating the page and media cites. Alice is a rockstar!

Post conference we learned much from a survey initiated by Secretary Michael Collins. When we were busy patting ourselves on the back for a job well done…and resting from the effort, Michael thought to begin a constructive inquiry as to those things that went right, and where we can improve. We learned that the most popular activities were those that provided for networking and interacting with our peers. None of the academic sessions could compete with the “Beer and Donuts” session…who could? Our general session from Jeff Cava, former VP of Starwood was extremely well received, and the most valued session, next to Beer…of course. Where we fell short however, was in not allowing our peers enough time to share their scholarship with one another. They want more time in their sessions, and particularly posters where there were 14 sessions, some of which would benefit from peer feedback on their in-progress work. We fell short in providing enough break time, meet and greet time, and social engagements. Although the general session was great, our peers didn’t want one each day. They expressed more value in a single opening session, some social activities and a LOT of time for their scholarly presentations and peer feedback.

As a reader of this article, you may gauge the subliminal message/example in the discussion above. When we face those awkward moments where we need to have a discussion on how to move forward with grace and address our shortcomings, start out by pointing out the “nice things” and achievements of others. Those nice things in life often lead to a path of improvement. Smile deeply and sincerely when you honor your peers for their achievements and hard work. Once on the “nice” path, it becomes easier to address the details of where we fell short. For us in the West Federation, the new team of officers, led by our incoming President, Scott Smith will continue us on a path of shared scholarship and best practice. Our upcoming conference is 2-3 February in Denver, CO. Thanks to some hard work by Karen Xie and Yun Ying Zhong, we are announcing our Call for Papers in August and will have registration and submissions open earlier. We are learning from our harried last minute planning of last year that we need to plan sooner. We

Esteemed Hotelier Bestowed APacCHRIE Lifetime Achievement Award

Dr Ho Kwon Ping

Dr Ho Kwon Ping, Founder and Executive Chairman of Banyan Tree Holdings, was honoured with the APacCHRIE Lifetime Achievement Award by the Asia-Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE) at a ceremony held at Sofitel Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia on 2 June 2017.

Sponsored by the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, the APacCHRIE Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a distinguished individual with outstanding contributions to the hospitality and tourism industry and education in the Asia-Pacific region as well as to APacCHRIE.

One of Singapore’s most eminent business figures, Dr Ho received his higher education in Singapore, Taiwan and the US. During an early career in broadcast and print journalism he worked in Hong Kong for the Far Eastern Economic Review before returning to Singapore in 1981 to lead his family’s business. He then founded Banyan Tree with a single hotel in Phuket and developed it into a highly successful publicly listed conglomerate that now includes hotels, resorts, residences, spas, retail galleries and golf courses. The group’s success is driven by its signature blend of romantic settings and environmental consciousness, backed by Dr Ho’s vision of promoting social and economic progress through sustainable tourism supporting local communities.

Dr Ho actively contributes to the community in his country as well as in the region. Under Dr Ho’s leadership, Banyan Tree works actively to preserve, protect and promote the natural and human environments in which the resorts are located. The group seeks to be a catalyst for social and economic development through responsible and sustainable tourism.

A pioneer, Dr Ho champions the vision of Asian paradigm in hospitality industry through his innovative approaches to business. He spares no efforts in cultivating talents for the industry and recognises the importance in developing Asian leadership. A firm believer in education, Dr Ho has been an ardent supporter of many hospitality and tourism schools including the SHTM. He is currently Chairman of Singapore Management University.

Member Updates and Information

“It is a great honour for me to receive the prestigious APacCHRIE Lifetime Achievement Award,” said Dr Ho. “Tourism is a driver for economic growth and also a means to connect the world. In striving to advance the global development of hospitality and tourism in a sustainable manner, we must continue to work together as a united group to nurture all the bright young minds who will become employees, and hopefully future leaders, in the sector.”

will have submissions reviewed and accepted by October so we have more time to meet contract requirements with our host hotel and plan conference details. We also have decided our next two locations; Sonoma, CA and Houston, TX and identified host institutions of CSU East Bay and the University of Houston. Our team of officers are busy planning some fun excursions to the Denver food and beverage scene and an engaging General Session. Let the work begin anew!

Please join me in congratulating our new leadership team and for those in the West Federation, please support them in their very busy task of preparing means to share in our scholarship:
