Heroes are doomed to suffer

before they win.

The Ötztaler Cycle Marathon, now in its 29th year, has been growing more and more popular every year. All racers who make it to the finish are winners, and the winners are the true heroes of the roads winding through the picturesque landscapes of South and North Tirol. Training methods and technical equipment have changed greatly since 1982, when the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon was staged for the first time. Today athletes train according to strict schedules worked out by experts, and many of the bicycles have unbelievable 30 gears to make climbing the long and steep mountain passes easier. What all racers have in common is their high motivation and their determination to fight. Some fight for win, others just to pass the last checkpoint on Timmelsjoch pass before it closes at 7.30 pm. Those who don‘t make it in time are forced to abandon their bikes on Timmelsjoch and board a transport vehicle back to Sölden. After a feeling of dejection over the failure,

most racers immediately start making new plans for the next year. Back home they can tell the most incredible stories about this tough mountain race. There are twelve masseurs along the race course waiting to sooth achy muscles. A wide range of measures are provided for

a speed recovery of the muscles as well as energized drinks to ease cramps. Racers can choose from 13 different drinks with each participant disposing of 12.5 liters. There are two food and one water stations along the last and most difficult 29 km long climb from St. Leonhard in the

Passeiertal (700 m) up to Timmelsjoch pass (2509 m). „Please, Red Bull with water“, is what volunteers hear most often here. The race organizers provide some 20,000 cans of this energy drink that is said to „give you wings“. In past races not a single can was returned, but – at least in friendly weather – 90% of the racers managed to take this last hurdle on their way to the finish.

Like any other violation of the rules established by the organizing committee, it will result in the imme-diate disqualification. Furthermore the cyclist will be suspended from the race for the following two years. According to Austrian Law this offence comes under forgery of documents.

4. LIMITED NUMBER OF STARTING PLACESThe first drawing for the Ötztaler Cycle Mara-thon 2009 includes a total of 4,700 starting places: 4,200 places will be drawn from all registrations and probortionally divided into the following classes - single registrations (40 %), small groups of 2 to 4 persons

(30 %) and groups of 5+ persons (30 %). The organizing committee of the Ötztaler Cycle Marathon reserves the right to give away further 500 starting places (media, sponsors, etc.) which are not part of the official drawing.There is a maximum number of 4,000 cyclists allowed to participate in the Ötztaler Cycling Marathon 2009.

5. REGISTRATION - 01, Feb - 28, Feb Between 01 and 28 February 2009 all • passionate cycling fans who want to participate in the 2009 Marathon, can

register for a general fee of € 2 or CHF 3.20. Payment via credit card or direct-debit mandate without deduction and free of expenses for the event organizer.

All cyclists with a starting place are pu-• blished on the official Ötztaler Cycling Marathon homepage the same day and will be contacted by e-mail.The entry fee of • € 75 and the chip deposit of € 10 have to be paid until Friday, 27, March 2009 - total amount € 85. Personal registration data has to be completed as well.All those who do not complete the • registration form entirely and/or do not transfer the entry fee by 27, March 2009 will be deleted from the starting list and the starting place will again be

at disposal of other cyclists in the next draw.A second draw will take place on • 08, May 2009 - Only persons registered regularly until 28 February 2009 can take part in further drawings of starting places.The registration/entry status can be • checked online. To avoid unnecessary waiting times this original starting place confirmation has to be signed and han-ded in when you pick up the starters‘ packages in Sölden.

7. ENTRY FEEThe entry fee for all cyclists will be the same as in 2007 and 2008: € 85 or CHF 136 (ex-clusive of handling charge) including € 10 deposit for the chip. The deposit of € 10 will be given back upon the return of the chip on the race day while the registraion fee of € 2 will not be refunded as it is not part of the entry fee.

10. TRANSFERRING/PASSING ON OF STARTING PLACESIt is possible to give the already paid star-ting place to another registered person who signed up regularly in February. The service charge is € 10. Changes of participants can be made exclusively at the organizing committee by 15. July 2009 at the latest. A special form is available on request.

11. WITHDRAWAL In general no refund is granted if the parti-cipant is not able to participate in the race and cancels his entry. Online bookers can take advantage of the cancellation insurance

which refunds the entire entry fee and the chip deposit if the entry has to be cancelled due to injuries or illness. Please take a closer look at the insurance terms and condi-tions in the course of the online registration. For cancellations not covered by an insu-rance the following conditions apply: in case of a written cancellation sent directly to the organizer until 15, July 2009

the entry fee will be refunded. The deposit of € 10 for the chip will not be given back. The starting place is not valid for next year‘s marathon. Cyclists who participate in the race with the bib number of another athlete or who do not act according to the rules will be immediately disqualified from

the marathon and also for the next 2 years.

12. PICK-UP OF STARTING NUMBERS Numbers are handed out at the tennis center of Freizeit Arena in Sölden upon presentation of the starting place confir-mation. Please read the general terms and conditions and sign them before you pick up your number. Always take a valid ID card with you. Opening times Friday, 28,08,2009 from 2 pm to 8 pm Saturday, 29,08,2009 from 11 am to 10 pm Sunday, 30,08,2009 from 5 am to 6 am

13. SIGNATURE With the signature on the starting number confirmation, which has to be presented at the starters‘ package pick up, every participant accepts the general terms and conditions. All cyclists accept full responsibi-lity for their health and physical condition. The organizer does not accept any responsi-bility for accidents during the marathon.

15. TEAM COMPETITIONTeams and clubs with a minimum of 5 participants take part in the team competi-tion automatically if the name of the team entered in the registration form is exactly the same (100%). There is no separate entry fee for the team competition.

16. Brenner - Brenner pass (1,377 m) - Sterzing - Jaufen pass (2,090 m) - St. Leonhard im Passeiertal - Timmelsjoch pass (2,509 m) - Sölden (1,377 m). The race course is subject to change! In very bad weather an alternative route is available. The final route must be approved by the race committee in collaboration with the local authorities and the organizing committee. 18. CHECKPOINTSThe original marathon course features 1 official checkpoint as

ordered by the local authorities: Timmels-joch pass, 7.30 pm.All participants who do not pass the check-point in time will be disqualified and do not receive a Finisher shirt.The organizer will install an additional checkpoint in St. Leonhard (located next to the timekeeping system for the track from St. Leonhard to Timmelsjoch pass) which must be reached by 3.30 pm. Participants who pass the checkpoint later have the possibility to take one of the broom buses. The race committee is of the opinion that all cyclists who arrive after 3.30 pm have no chance to reach Timmelsjoch pass by 7.30 pm.But the organizer reserves the right to install

21. ON THE COURSE...... Traffic regulations (StVO) must be adhered to at all times, as the route is not closed to public traffic. Every partici-pant rides at his/her own risk. The organizer accepts no responsibility for accidents or any other liability (including third party) before, during or after the event.... The cyclists should respect all orders given by race officials and policemen. Undiscipli-ned riders will be disqualified and deleted from the result list. Severe violations of traffic regulations will be reported to the responsible authorities (personal data). ... There are four refreshment stations and

one station with drinks only. For all partici-pants it is strictly forbidden to throw away garbage outside the marked areas located next to the refreshment stations. Ignoring this rule will result in a disqualification. At

the mentioned refreshment stations you will find a large number of garbage bags. Throwing away things can have negative effects on the continuation of the Ötztaler Cycling Marathon … It is strictly forbidden to paint on the asphalt road

or sidewalk! In case of violation partici-pants can be disqualified and must pay the cleaning service.... Medical assistance is provided by the Red Cross ... Escort cars are not recommended due to environmental reasons and in order to protect the cyclists‘ health and safety. Our utmost aim is to avoid public traffic by installing a number of detours for private vehicles. Slow cars or escort vehicles will be punished for obstruction to traffic by the police. fied immediately. ... Further road blocks and waiting times up to one hour are always possible. The organizing committee provides even more service teams this year. There is no need of private escort cars. ... The closing car and sufficient broom buses are on the course.

22. TIMEKEEPINGStarting block 1 will leave exactly at 6:45 am. All cyclists of the first starting block have the same starting time. The qualifica-tion criteria for a place in the first starting block, defined by the race director, can be found on the public notice board. All the other participants start the marathon by using the Real Timing System: the time runs as soon as you pass the starting line. There are 8 more timekeeping points along the course; they must be passed by all participants. With one missing timekeeping

information the cyclist will be disqualified. Several watches displayed on the infor-mation boards (race director, presenter, closing vehicle) show the time passed since the official beginning of the race. Only the watches in the start and finish area show the exact Central European Time.Every cyclist has to pass the timekeeping areas/lines correctly and control it for himself immediately.

23. FIRST AIDAn ambulance will escort the participants along the whole race course. Additional ambulance cars are waiting in immediate vicinity to the Alpine passes: Kühtai, Brenner, Jaufen and Timmelsjoch. A rescue helicopter is available as well and three emergency doctors accompany the cyclists permanently. The first medical aid on the spot is free of

charge. If the injured is taken to a hospital or somewhere else, the service must be paid extra.

24. BROOM WAGONParticipants who give up are strongly recommended to stay on the course and to wait for one of the broom buses. The event organizer will publish the BROOM WAGON LOCATIONS on several information boards on 28,08,. The broom bus stations

can be found near inns and gas stations along the marathon course, and in areas where the cyclists have enough space to wait for the next broom wagon.

25. SERVICE CARSThe organizer provides a number of service motorbikes who can help with minor repairs only. But there are 10 fully equipped service

the non-monetary prizes will be no longer valid. Cups and non-monetary prizes can not be sent either. We are pleased to give you a warm welcome and to celebrate together the end of this great sports event. Additionally, we are extremely proud of the winners and all the others who conquered the Ötztaler Cy-cling Marathon. The following categories and classes will receive a prize: overall winner (female and male), the three best cyclists of every category and the five best teams. 27. ALTERATIONS The organizing committee reserves the right to change program. All official alterations can be checked on the official Ötztaler Cycling Marathon website. Program changes and notifications will be announced on the occasion of the cyclists‘ meeting and on the information boards at the Freizeit Arena. Announced changes and alterations are valid and binding.

28. DISQUALIFICATION The participation in the race with another

cars guided by experts who can help almost in any situation. This service is free of char-ge but the material must be paid separately. Additionally, every refreshment station offers a service point at the end of the refreshment area. Here again, the service is free of charge but the material must be paid separately. 26. PRIZE CEREMONYThe prize ceremony will take place on the occasion of a short entertaining program on Sunday, 30 August, at 9.00 pm in the sports hall of Freizeit Arena. The special honorary prizes and wonderful non-mone-tary prizes are only presented personally to the cyclists. Cups can also be picked up by substitutes after the prize ceremony while

29. CANCELLATION OF THE EVENT If the event has to be cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances the organizing committee reserves the right to refund only 50% of the entry fee.

30. THANKS More than 700 persons help in organizing the great Ötztaler Cycling Marathon, most of them are volunteers who work free of charge. We would like to give special thanks to Sölden‘s housewives for baking cakes and preparing sweets, and to the entire volunteer staff at the refreshment stations. 31. CLOSING WORDSThe organizing committee would appreciate if all participants in the cycling marathon are careful and concentrated especially at the beginning of the race across the Ötztal valley – as long as most of the cyclists are still riding in large groups. It is not recom-mended to race down the valley at full speed, oncoming traffic is always possible. The ultimate Ötztaler Cycle Marathon is held since 1982. The key stages have always been the four Alpine passes; the total distance can vary between 222 km and 254 km. The marathon course mentioned in point 7 has a total length of 227 km and features 5508 m of difference in altitude according to GPS data. Also the refreshment stations can change their location depending on the single stages. All these guide numbers can differ up to 5 km. We wish you a perfect preparation with many meters, plenty of elevation gain and even more kilometers in the slipstream of your best friends.
