Mission Statement

The ICE Yorkshire and Humber Graduates, Apprentices, Students and Technicians (GAST) Committee

represents developing engineers who are working towards their professional qualifications. The group

spans across the region covering areas of Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Hull and York.

The core of aim of the group is to provide a basis for developing engineers to regularly meet and engage

with each other as we develop and progress in our careers. Through the events, meetings and activities

which we host, we aim to provide support in the following areas of Networking, Development,

Opportunities, Knowledge, Guidance, Recognition and Events.

In addressing the areas above the crucial item which is most important to us is Your Input. Without the support and engagement of our members we wouldn't be able to achieve our mission.

Meet Greet and Eat – An introduction to the ICE with a stall run by GAST at University or Careers Fair

events to introduce ICE YH GAST, what we do, how to get involved or introduce the attributes briefly.

WEDG – There is a launch event with the MDO to bring anyone interested in becoming involved in the

discussion groups together and provides an opportunity to assist those soon undertaking their review.

The attendees are then split into their discussion groups to begin their self-led groups.

Attribute Seminars – The MDO has hand-picked recently chartered members who give their help and

insight into how they progressed towards achieving attributes which in turn supported their professional

review and becoming an ICE Member. Held over 4 separate seminar sessions, where each session

focuses on specific attributes to ensure that all 9 attributes are covered in the year.

Annual Debate – Debate organised by the committee on a topic of our choice. Typically involves a

special guest chair for the evening, 3 speakers for each side of the argument, and allows attendees to

get involved and have their say.

Emerging Engineers Award – Entrants write a paper on any area of engineering design, research or

practice. The papers are presented and discussed with the winning papers shortlisted to an international

judging panel and then presented at the final at the ICE Headquarters in London.

Football/ Netball Competition – Regional competition held for a day, where teams play against each

other. Great opportunity to network.

ICE YH GAST Meetings – Monthly meetings which provide an opportunity to network, share knowledge,

discuss issues relevant to our region, receive updates on upcoming events, reflect on past events, find

volunteers to assist with activities and provide opportunities to get more involved with the ICE.

ICE YH GAST Socials - There are two big socials of note in the year; the Summer and Christmas Socials.

This is led by the Social Secretary to provide an opportunity to network and engage with the ICE YH

GAST Committee and get to know us to get more involved.

ICE Pitch 200 – Held annually, Pitch 200 is a chance to deliver a presentation in 200 seconds on an

engineering topic of your choice. It should be a fun, interactive pitch that explains an element of

engineering that is easy to understand by a member of public. The competition winner has the chance

to represent Yorkshire & Humber at the national final.

President’s Visit – An evening with the ICE President, which challenges attendees to think about current

topics and discuss them with the President. Includes certificates given to those who have been specially

recognised that year, with a photo opportunity with the president.

Annual Dinner – As part of the recognition of what ICE YH GAST do throughout the year, the main ICE

Committee invites the ICE YH GAST Committee to the annual dinner, where the GAST Chair/Chairs have

a slot for a speech for the evening. A fantastic way to network and a great way of being recognised for

GAST input throughout the year.
