ICE Show 2011

Welcome to a brief overview of ICE!

You may recall some years back all the buzz about placing important emergency contact information in your cell phone preceded by the letters I.C.E.

Since that time there have been a number of adaptations of the concept and number of ways ICE could be used as a safety and personal preparedness tool.

At this time there are roughly 4.1 Billion cell phone subscriptions for the 6.7 Billion people on earth according to the UNs International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and equipping your phone with ICE is still a very relevant safety practice.

1ICE The OriginsBob Brotchie - Paramedic for the East of England Ambulance Corp in the U.K.

Bob is responsible for promoting the idea of using the term ICE in cell phones to assist first responders locate next of kin in mass casualty situations.

In 2005, UK Paramedic Bob Brotchie is widely credited with conceiving the idea of using the acronym ICE as a tool to denote emergency contact numbers in cell phones . Bob had been featured on many news and talk shows advancing this worthwhile idea since then.

Bob continues to actively promote ICE to this day and in 2009 he endorsed the efforts being advanced by ICE4SAFETY & EMS Options LLC who developed and support the use of the symbol you see here and have experience in EMS/Fire/Police/Safety.

We commend Bob for his idea and his unending dedication promoting the preparedness concept!

2ICE The Symbol

This ICE symbol was designed in 2005 and after lengthy application process finally received official trademark approval in 2009. The ICE image was specifically designed with contrasting high visibility safety colors to improve immediate recognition. It was meant to be used by the public as a preparedness / safety tool .

Since 2005, ICE4SAFETY.COM has created a number of different applications for the use of the ICE Image with more be developed on a continuing basis.

3ICE In Case of Emergency

No one wants to find themselves or a loved involved in some natural or man made disaster - but they can and do occur with growing frequency .

By making a conscious decision not to be a victim and taking some simple steps to prepare and act decisively you can actually improve the immediate outcome of many emergency situations.

The topic of our own mortality is a difficult one to address and many avoid it actively ICE tries to address this topic in constructive ways by using straightforward and practical education and application tools.

To quote a famous person - By not preparing you are preparing to fail Ben Franklin4ICE Main Elements

The ICE concept has 6 simplified elements that make it work. Preparation: You must actively take part in being prepared

Awareness: Being cognizant of your situation - anywhere

Communication: Being able to effectively convey information to others quickly without confusion or delay

Action: Knowing what to do and acting upon that knowledge

Responsibility: Becoming more self reliant!

Prevention: Being ready/able to act/react as needed

While ICE may appear to be a passive use it and forget idea it is not that at all. 5

ICE - Cards

Emergency Info Cards are a very practical application for ICE .

ICE Cards can be carried on your person or many other places and can be easily updated without the aid of a 3rd party. You can carry as many as you need. Place them in:Vehicles, wallet, refrigerator, hard hat , ski helmets, backpack, watercraft, ATV, Snowmobile.think of more?

ICE4SAFETY Cards are UV and Water Resistant , can be laminated or carried in a clear zip lock type pouch if desired - they are portable and can be taken everywhere you go.

ICE Cards can convey critical info such as advance directives, medical conditions or language translation needs in a hurry. They can be created in many different languages if need be.

6ICE Sticker Applications

ICE Stickers : Small (1 x 1) Phones /WalletMedium ( 2 x 2) Supplies/VehiclesLarge (8 x 8 reflective) Emergency Vehicle

Their main use is to alert EMS that emergency information is located nearby for an injured/ill person on a cell phone, ICE Card, Medical Info Form , Flash Drive etc.

Stickers also play a role in the rapid identification of critical emergency supplies or prepositioned assets that bear the symbol and that are critical tools in an emergency such as utility shut off tools, respirators, fuel, food, road flares, etc. .7ICE Cell Phones

4.1 Billion Phones and counting! 2/3 of the people on earth have access to a cell phone. It is hard to keep up with all the changing featuresMany phones now have ICE Contact features built in.

Some tips on using ICE on cell phones:List emergency contacts using the E.123 method Place an ICE Sticker on the PhoneUpload ICE image to phone background screen Record safety message or record emergency voice message on your phone as wellIf phone has SIM card place emergency contacts on both SIM and Phone memoryIf camera equipped - take your own picture name the file as phone owner

8ICE Emergency Medical Contact Info

Emergency Medical Contact Forms This is the easiest way to list your emergency contact and medical info make as many as you need carry them with you and leave with your contacts!

When you cant speak for yourselfthis can sure help convey the information you cant.

This record is also a component of the CRITICAL INFO FORM that contains medical-property-financial-contact-health records in a Microsoft spreadsheet file (xls).

Many more forms of this nature can be found on the ICE website that can compliment your preparedness efforts. 9ICE - Posters

If you have ideas for a safety or preparedness discussion ICE can provide an excellent medium for your work. Posters can be site specific /regional or general in nature

Posters can be used to for: Jobsite Tool Box Talks To Illustrate emergency medical information Announcing public safety info or programsShow evacuation routes / emergency proceduresDenote location of Emergency Action Plan infoPromote the use of ICE in the Community or Workplace

Templates are available online or you can create your own. You are only limited by your imagination here. 10Smart-ICEfor smartphones

Smart-ICE was introduced as a Smart Phone Application in Spring of 2009. It was developed by real EMS/Fire Service Professionals at www.ems-options.com

For persons with a smart technology cell phone this APP can be yet one more effective preparedness tool that provide a means of storing easily accessible and most of all UNDERSTANDABLE medical data for and entire family.

This product is the only fully supported ICE product with user guides, roll call training for EMS/Fire/Police as well as full consultation support for agencies looking to run a full fledged ICE Program in their area.

Newer releases are being readied that will allow first responders to transmit emergency data to medical centers during an emergency. $1.99 and $3.99 for the family version.

An example of an ER Room Physician own smart-ice in use is pictured here! There are fund raising versions for breast cancer research and customized for local EMS/FIRE promo.11ICE International Recognition

The UN Agency International Telecommunications Union ( ITU), responsible for developing communications standards asked ICE4SAFETY in March 2008 to assist in the promotion of an international standard that simplifies the use of ICE in all electronic devices .

This standard is known as E.123 and it is based upon the language independent method of using Arabic Numerals (01, 02, 03.) as the tool for assigning hierarchy programming cell phones and other devices. This adaptation was designed by ICE4SAFETY for the UN to represent that method internationally and is discussed in detail on the UN and ICE4SAFETY websites.

12ICE Workplace Safety

General Industry 29CFR1910.35(a) OSHAConstruction 29CFR1926.38 OSHANational ASSE endorsed the use of ICE in September 2005

Both relate to having employee emergency medical and contact information readily available with the employee during a jobsite emergency.

ICE can also play a significant role as a component of the Emergency Action Plan by becoming the stand out symbol for emergency action.to date all are confusing and conflicting signage or simple text not good in an emergency.

Employees can have emergency contacts listed on contact cards, medical info forms, phones, stickers on helmets (ok with OSHA does not impede inspection) and info inside.

Workers can also use ICE at home with their families and friends reinforcing the safety system 24/7! That should make it easier for safety professionals to promote ICE!

13ICE When You Ride or Drive

While we all do not ever want to find ourselves in this situation as a driver or occupant of a motor vehicle we may find ourselves on the other side as an EMT, Firefighter, Police Officer or Good Samaritan .

Those who have prepared ahead for such an event would have emergency medical and contact information located in their vehicle, on their person, programmed in their phones, ICE Sticker(s) on their vehicle, first aid kits on board ready to use and be trained in first aid.

For many people who cannot afford costly satellite crash service in their vehicles - using ICE may be the most logical alternative - and of course you can use both! We suggest people do not rely on any one preparedness method or device for their safety.

14ICE Emergency Vehicle Uses

Public Service Agencies can utilize large ICE Placards on their vehicles to reinforce the support given for using ICE in their respective communities.

ICE Banners can be displayed at Fire/Police/EMS stations as a high profile reminder that an ICE Program is in use.

Many ICE like safety products do not actively provide free support for agencies like ICE4SAFETY does.

Professional assistance on administering a successful community ICE Program is also available at no charge from experienced staff at EMS-Options.

15ICE - Easy to Promote

Groups that have promoted ICE include Police, EMS Corps, Skilled Nursing and Retirement Communities, Hospital Trauma Centers, Housing Agencies, Private Business, Individuals, Universities, Foreign Companies, Foreign Governments, Politicians, Social Service Organizations, Construction Companies.

ICE Posters, banners, handouts, brochures, cards, stickers, medical info forms, safety checklists , promotional items all make it easy to start up an ICE Program in your community or use to enhance your workplace safety programs.

ICE has been featured on CNN and various print and broadcast media and as public service announcements (PSAs)16ICE - Supported Near You

Florida happens to be one state with a considerable number of communities actively promoting ICE .

ICE has been featured at the South County Fair and being used by thousands of residents in and around Palm Beach County due to the efforts of the Sheriff (PBSO) .

The ASSE formally endorsed using ICE September 2005 (Review their recommendation letter on the website)

Localities where ICE is in use changes regularly

The ICE website has a slide show with many of the cities where people are using ICE and groups promoting the concept. The numbers continue to grow. 17What ICE is NOT!

Some big box stores offer personal safety solutions that have limited recognition and applications that rely quite heavily on the sale of paid subscription services .

ICE has considerably more utility as an overall safety tool than any of these unsupported single entry products.

Again, this is just one method and addresses having medical information on hand in a USB Drive like device or available through a 3rd party call.

You need to ask yourself how would EMS/Fire /Police organizations recognize, promote or actively support the various conflicting commercial products in use?

This product was last seen next to cat food in aisle 10.

The time for surprise is at a party not during an emergency.!18So, Maybe ICE is 4 You?

If you think that ICE might work for you in your personal or business life great! Use it.

Send for a free ICE Kit.

You might even have some ideas on how the use of this tool can be improved . Feel free to share if you like.

Uses for ICE change quite often as more an more are developed. Thank you for visiting and learning about ICE.
