Forms and Conventions

In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?

Page 3: Ice Fm :)

USE forms and conventions Similar to other existing conventions we:

-Used a jingle to introduce the news cast

-Also used advertisements like other media products

-There is a weather forecast which many other media products use such as BBC 1

Page 4: Ice Fm :)

Develop forms and conventions As well as using existing conventions we have further developed many some of which are:

Headline: when introducing the headlines we included bass and upbeat music beats in order to appeal to our younger audience

Also the weather forecast has a very mundane and common jingle so we modernised it by adding extra beats also sound effects to bring it alive.

Page 5: Ice Fm :)

Challenge forms and conventions

Our media product challenges media conventions through the new stories targeting the youth

Most media when addressing youth seem to have a negative approach (knife crime, ASBO)

We chose to completely challenge the normal stereotype by highlighting achievements and make them be seen on a more uplifting stage (Young Mayor, X-factor youth winners)

Also included politics which normally only appeals to older generation but we uplifted it making it appeal to the youth.

Page 6: Ice Fm :)

RepresentationHow does your media product represent particular social group?

Page 7: Ice Fm :)

Politics ( Young Mayor Update)Common view: - Youth are disconnected with politics,- Are powerless, only enabled to . This news story shows how young generation

are: - involved in politics and aiming to make

changes, - also allows them to be recognised as

intelligent and well aware individuals.

Page 8: Ice Fm :)

POLITICS CONTINUED(interview with Boris Jonson)Not aware of the political state :

- we give them insight to the on-going (economic state)

- recognising them as responsible people affected by problems of society.

- Also gives them a chance to be shown as fallen victims of the current unemployment issue

- Currently 50% of teenagers leaving at GCSE Level and entering training and the like so will be affected

Page 9: Ice Fm :)

Crime and state of youth - mile end stabbing youth victim

Young boy stabbed by middle aged men To show it on the other side that youth are

not the main suspects but also fall as victims but this is rarely shown.

This represents them in a sensitive manner and a more sympathetic view should be placed on them as this social group are always seen in a derogatory manner.

Page 10: Ice Fm :)

X-FACTOR and food critique

social - it shows young people in another positive way as this shows young peoples fulfilment of aspiration

Hopes and actually achieving there dreams making a reality

Relax – the need to relax and importance of distress not just typical time wasters but have a responsible way of having fun furthermore there interest of other cultures specific to our interest in French food

I’m thinking BBC RADIO 1 !!A very popular station

Page 13: Ice Fm :)

Who are BBC 1

•It is a British national radio station operated by the BBC aiming at ages 15-29

•Specializing in music and chart hits throughout the day

•BBC radio 1 provides a wide genre of music after 7:00pm including electronic dance, hip hop, rock or interviews.• •They have various different stations one of which is created for the younger population.

Page 14: Ice Fm :)

Why choose our newscast of ICE fm ?

•We broadcast to the younger population similar to bbc 1 radio

•Also included in our broadcast is a music section generating the latest hits.

•Also we are a national radio station.

•But also we feel our station may appeal further as it has a target to empower the youth via politics.

AUDIENCEWho would be the audience for your media product?

North London

West London

Series1

We were going to target only east London students but found that would be community news - not local news. On average they listen to radio the least. This intrigued us so we mainly targeted “tower hamlets” anyway.

TechnologyWhat have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Page 21: Ice Fm :)

DIGITAL V ANALOG 21st century uses more digital

technology storing and recording data digitally is

easier. Analogue is not drastically but, still

being replaced by digital technology.

Page 22: Ice Fm :)

DAB Radio Digital audio broadcasting Is the improved service for radios Analogue Radios tend to have

interference within stations like FM. But DAB allows us to be at a focal

point with perfect sound and offers more stations in the same broadcast spectrum.

DAB IS TAKING OVER!!

Page 23: Ice Fm :)

What so good about DAB? DAB STILL HAS ITS FLAWS ... More expensive Hasn't completely perfected problems

of poor reception, But DAB Radio is advantageous Broader selection, quality has improved

drastically no need to re-tune constantly and

wider data available on broadcasts.

Page 24: Ice Fm :)

Convergence Convergence is increasingly popular in

the 21st centuryRadios are now convergent with TV in forms of

SKY.Is this good? YES!!Cost efficient 1 machine to do two things. NO!!!Increase the digital divide...older generations

can onlyuse “old radios” but now there practically

extinct!

Page 25: Ice Fm :)

Digital Divide Is there a gap between people and technology?

YES ! Technology although getting better continues to be inaccessible to some.

The digital divide is classified based on age, gender and ethnic groups as well as locations.

Also global digital divide is about differences in technology access with countries.

Page 26: Ice Fm :)

Parallel Medium•Radio uses the kind of technology that allows us to consume the medium but continue with our daily routine

•E.g. radio so compact you can carry it in your pocket, so sing to your tune and go for your morning run.

•Many more modern technologies have become parallel mediums

C’mon I phones are practically like carrying a computer in your back pocket letting you carry out all the usual activities simultaneously

Page 27: Ice Fm :)

The Future What’s next for technology? Well developments are constantly

being made More technologies are abruptly

making breakthroughs . Next thing: we will be having portable

ATMS

QuickTime™ and aTIFF (Uncompressed) decompressor

are needed to see this picture.

Preliminary tasklooking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Page 29: Ice Fm :)

The preliminary task

Page 30: Ice Fm :)

Only 40 seconds!!

It was quite difficult to get timing right, and recording the voices were difficult as well as choosing a topic.

But when we finally got everything together it worked out great short and sweet.

Helped progress for actual tasks as we were well practised.

Page 31: Ice Fm :)

LEARNING TO USE EQUIPMENT.

We felt mixing things up would be a good idea

Mixing the music Altering voices to make characters Sound codes introduced and used

occasionally – They were used to frequent so we cut a few

to ensure too much wasn’t going on.

Page 32: Ice Fm :)

What did I learn?

Learnt from the progression that radio is something not commonly used by our social group

How making the music finding the right stories and piecing things together is very crucial

Setting the tone is most important too formal = dull

too informal = unprofessional.
