Readers of all ages are invited to join the reading team this summer at the Amherst Town Library. The 2016 Summer Reading Program— ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, READ! will kick off on Monday, June 20 and will provide a variety of outstand- ing activities and events. The program will run for eight weeks, and will culminate on Friday, August 12 with an Ice Cream Social at the Congregational Church. For CHILDREN we will read books, earn prizes, enjoy a variety of performers, create crafts, and just have fun all summer long. Among other things, well be trying to make the towns biggest jump rope out of plastic grocery bags!! This year, were challenging our readers to read 6500 hours. If they do, Miss Sarah, Miss Sue and Miss Sadie have promised to use the super-long jump rope to challenge the young readers of Amherst to a tug-of-war at the Ice Cream Social—yikes! They say theyre pretty sure theyre going to win—make sure you get a chance to pull them over the line—sign up for the program and READ! TEENS are challenged to GET IN THE GAME at the library this summer. As in past years, well offer book bucksfor every book read or program attended, which may be used to purchase books or be entered into weekly raffles. Reptiles-up-Close Program

Wednesday, June 22 from 2:00-2:45 Come and learn about our reptile friends at the Museum of Science

Traveling Program. We’ll be looking at and learning about these

amazing animals. For children 5 years old and up.

And for a hands-on look at our local animal life, Amoskeag Fishways

Learn the difference between these two fascinating groups of creatures.

Hands-on activities and observation of live animals help students explore

the life cycles, adaptations and fascinating behaviors of our local snakes,

turtles, frogs and salamanders. For children ages 6 and up.

you to many of her puppet pals, and tell some wonderful stories.

Thurs., July 21 at 10:30 AM—-5th Annual Pet Show! —

Sign up in the Children’s Room to bring your pet, or just come to

see everyone else’s—ribbons will be awarded! Make your pet’s

dream come true! Fun for all. Weather permitting. All ages.

Tues., July 26 at 10:30 AM — Mad Science — Come and

join us for a fantastic time with the folks from Mad Science--you'll

have some fun, and learn a lot, too! For kids ages 5 and up.

LOVIN’ the LIBRARY

Make-it/Take-it Crafts Whenever the library is open, the craft table in the Children’s Room is available, with a new craft offered every week. Come on down whenever it’s convenient for you, and your kids will have an opportunity to make a craft.

This summer we’re having our fun-filled family events at various times during the week—-so be sure to look carefully at the date/

time, so you don’t miss one! No registration is necessary for these events—but please take note of the suggested ages.

Mondays in the Meeting Room “On Your Mark, Get Set, Go!” physical challenge activities:

Any time you drop by between 10:00 and 4:00

on Mondays, you and your kids can explore the activity that’s set up in the Johnson

Meeting Room. It might be an obstacle course, some basket-shooting, a ring toss, or a fitness activity. It will be something different every Monday---make sure to come on by and

see how well you “meet the challenge”!!

TEEN TABLE

CREATIONS Whenever you visit the

Teen Table this summer, you’ll find supplies there to

make a creation. The supplies will change every

week, so make sure you come in often—relax, chat quietly with a friend, and

Storytimes Family Storytimes with Miss Sadie Bring the whole family to the library to spend some quality story time with Miss Sadie. She will be sharing a variety of her favorite books aimed at the 3-6 age group, but younger and older siblings are welcome, too. 10:00 AM on Wednesdays June 29 to August 10

Storytime at Baboosic Lake with Miss Sue Pack a lunch and head down to the town beach for some stories by the water. Miss Sue will be sharing a variety of her favorite books aimed at the 3-6 age group, but all ages are welcome. Weather permitting. Noon on Thursdays June 30 to August 11

Baby Listeners (newborn-age 2) with Miss Sarah Come to the library on Friday mornings for this caregiver/child program for our youngest children. We gather for rhymes, songs, puppets, and a simple book or two. In addition to being lots of fun for the kids, it’s a great opportunity for adults to meet, chat, and have a cup of cof-fee with other caregivers of very young children! 10:30 AM on Fridays June 24 to August 12

Hey, teens! We know you’re reading some great books this summer—-use that to

your advantage to come in and win some of our wonderful raffle prizes. For every

book you read, you earn a “book buck”, which can be used to purchase a book from

our “Teen Readers” book cart, or to enter the Teen Summer Raffle. Miss Jane and

Miss Sarah are challenging you to read a total of 300 books. If you do, you get to

vote for the end-of-summer-reading event of your choice (more details to come).

So, come on down to the library and register for Summer Reading!!

Chronicle’s Ted Reinstein Presents “Wicked Pissed: New England’s Most Famous Feuds” Wednesday, June 29 at 7 PM Ted Reinstein, native New Englander, writer, and reporter for “Chronicle,” offers us fascinating stories, some known, others not so much, from the history of New England. Bringing to life many of the fights, spats, and arguments that have shaped the area it-self—from sports to politics, food to finance, avia-tion to engineering, to bitter disputes over simple boundaries themselves. Exercise Y our Mind with a Good Old-Fashioned Feud! East Timor and Indonesia: A Turbulent History, a Peaceful Rebuilding Wednesday, July 13 at 7 PM Barry Pell, photojournalist and world traveler in 161 countries, explores the history, landscape, and fasci-nating culture of East Timor where he recently visit-ed. Located north of Australia, East Timor is one of the world’s newest nations. But its independence was hard fought—first from the Portuguese, and then from Indonesia, with whom it fought a 24-year war. Exercise Your Mind with a Trip to East Timor!

The Starry Messenger: Meet Galileo and View the Night Sky—a living history presentation

Wednesday, July 20 at 7 PM Galileo, portrayed by Physical Science and Physics teacher, and professional actor Mike Francis, “arrives” to present a public lecture on his most recent discover-ies made with his “newly” devised spyglass. After the lecture, a short guided look at the stars with our Li-brary Telescope will be offered. Exercise Y our Mind with a Little Stargazing! Chocolate: The Perfect Indulgence Thursday, July 28 at 7 PM Along with learning which chemicals elicit biochemi-cal reactions in the human brain—making chocolate the perfect indulgence—we will taste chocolate, hear of its healthy benefits, explore the various kinds, and view a few magic tricks with presenter Mike Cross, Associate Professor of Chemistry at NECC. Exercise Your Mind with a Taste of Chocolate! Flight of Remembrance: A WWII Memoir of Love and Survival Wednesday, August 10 at 7 PM Marina Dutzmann Kirsch presents the true narrative of her family’s experiences against the backdrop of WWII tragedy and devastation in Latvia, Poland, and Germany. Follow Marina’s father Rolf’s journey from Luftwaffe to a career in the emerging U.S. space pro-gram. Exercise Y our Mind with a WWII Remem-brance!
