Preparation Freeze pine cones in a small bucket with a string loop attached (So that you can hang it once frozen) Main Activity • Tell the children that Jack Frost has visited their outdoor learning environment and some pine cones have been frozen in ice. Discuss with the children how this may have happened & how we may release them. Use the states of water pictures as prompts. • Explain that we are going to experiment what will happen when we heat the ice-frozen-cones over the fire pit. You could hang the frozen ice filled with pine cones from your cooking tripod with the string and place it over your fire pit. • Predict what will happen to the ice? If it turns into water, will it put the fire out? Or will the fire be too fierce and heat the ice into water and then quickly turn it into steam/ smoke? Will it melt all of the ice in one go or gradually? What will happen to the pine cones? Will they burn in the fire? • Discuss how we are going to experiment safely. • Children can use sand timer or stopwatches to time how long it takes for the ice to melt. After the experiment is over, analyse the results with the children. Differentiation: HA- Can they name the different states of water and how it can be changed between each stage? LA- You could provide picture prompts for different states of water of you wish. Extension: Provide other materials for ice play and experiments to consolidate learning and understanding.
