CONVERSATION STARTERS SEPTEMBER 23, 2018 This is a guide to help start a conversation about this week's service. Feel free to pick, choose, re-order and adapt as you see fit. You know your group best and can facilitate their experience by modifying as necessary. ICE-BREAKERS 1. If this is the first week your group is together since taking a summer break, have a moment to catch up. Invite everyone to consider the defining moment of their summer. What was the highlight? The lowlight? The thing you learned? Or the thing you’ll most remember? 2. If there is anyone joining your group for the first time, be sure everyone introduces themselves. Review some of the values and intentions of Life Group, helping everyone feel welcome and secure no matter where they might be on a spiritual journey. COMMUNITY DEVOTIONAL | DREAM BIG, THINK SMALL 1. How many people in the group have been tracking with the first week of our community devotional, “Dream Big, Think Small”? What’s been positive about carving out a few minutes each day to engage with this resource? What’s been challenging? What has stood out to you most so far? 2. As comfortable, share the “holy discipline” you want to commit to as suggested on page 45. NOTE: If most of the group is participating in the devotional, invite them to bring their book each week to check in together. For anyone who doesn’t have one, copies can be picked up at the church. MESSAGE REVIEW 1. You may want to watch this week's message with your group as a refresher. Or, try picking a spot with 10-15 minutes to go to review the main application(s). Messages are found at southridgechurch.ca/messages. 2. Feel free to try one or two of these… What did you hear in this week's message? What ideas stood out? What did you agree with? Disagree with? What questions came to mind? How did it make you feel? MESSAGE REFLECTION 1. When it comes to the invitation to follow Jesus, do you think most people feel like it will make their life easier or harder? What do you think creates our expectations one way or the other? 2. Read this week’s passage found in James 1:1-4. Try to think of a specific challenge you faced recently and how you dealt with it. How do you normally feel when you’re going through “trials” and “tests”? 3. Think of a time when a certain challenge helped you learn and grow. How could this dynamic take root in our faith and following of Jesus? How has this message changed your perspective on the goal of life and faith? MESSAGE RESPONSE 1. Share as a group about some of the current struggles or challenges of life. Take time to pray for one another, not only that God will be with us, but that we will find joy as he transforms us through these challenges.
