The Situation

Amit and Kapoor work for Liberty in Gurgaon. Amit supervises a research laboratory. Kapoor is the manager of research and development. Amit and kapoor are alumni of the same college who have work for Liberty for more than 6 years. Kapoor has been Amit’s boss for 2 years. One of Amit’s team members has greatly impressed him. This team member is Sumita Sen. Sumita was hired 11 months ago. She is 24 years old and holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. Her entry level salary was Rs. 3 lakhs per year. Amit told her that, in accordance with corporation policy, she would receive an initial performance evaluation at 6 months and a comprehensive review after 1 year. Based on a performance record, Sumita was told she could expect a salary adjustment at time 1 year evaluation.

Amit’s evaluation of Sumita after 6 months was very positive. Amit commented on the long hours Sumita was putting in, her co-operative spirit, the fact that others in the lab enjoyed working with her, and that she was making an immediate positive impact on the project assigned to her. Now that Sumita’s first anniversary is coming up, Amit has again reviewed Sumita’s performance. Amit thinks Sumita may be the best new person the R & D group has ever hired. After only a year, Amit has ranked Sumita as a no. 3 performer in the department of 11.

Salaries in the department vary greatly. Amit , for instance, has a base salary of Rs. 8 lakhs, plus eligibility for a bonus that might add another Rs 1 lakhs to Rs 1.2 lakhs a year. The salary range of the 11 department member is Rs 2.5 lakhs to 6 lakhs. The individual with the lowest salary is recent hire with the bachelor’s degree in physics. The two people whom Amit has rated above Sumita earned based salaries of Rs 5 lakhs and Rs 5.9 lakhs. They are both 30 years old and have been at liberty

for 3 and 4 years respectively. The median salary in Amit’s departments is Rs 4.5 lakhs.

Amit’s Role

You want to give Sumita a big raise. Although she’s young, she has proven to be an excellent addition to the department. You don’t want to lose her. More importantly, she knows in general what other people in the department are earning, and she thinks she’s underpaid. The company typically gives 1 year raises of 5 percent, although 10 percent is not unusual and 20 to 30 percent increases have been approved on occasion. You’d like to get Sumita as large an increase as Kapoor will approve.

Kapoor’s Role

All your supervisors typically try to squeeze you for as much money as they can for their people. You understand this because you did the same thing when you were a supervisor, but your boss wants to keep a lid on costs. He wants you to keep raises for recent hires generally in the 5 to 8 percent range. In fact, he’s sent a memo to all managers and supervisors saying this. He also said that managers will be evaluated on their ability to maintain budgetary control. However, your boss is also concerned with equity and paying people what they’re worth. You feel assured that he will support any salary recommendation you make, as long as it can be justified. Your goal, consistent with cost reduction, is to keep salary increases as low as possible.

You are required to script and enact the Negotiation

Amit has a meeting scheduled with Kapoor to discuss Sumita’s performance review and salary adjustment.
