Outline
I, Introduction
Topic: extending condolences to the relatives of the deceased in office setting.- Definition: Extending condolences to the relatives of the deceased is the act of giving comfort or
sympathy to those whose relative has passed away.
- Example:Vietnamese people: Ti rt tic, xin chia bun cng gia nh anh ch.
English people: Its never fair to have such a loss. Aims:
- To investigate special situations of extending condolences to the relatives of the deceased in officesetting.
- To compare and contrast condolences strategies in the two languages and cultures in order to clarifysimilarities and differences in the realization patterns of condoling between Vietnamese and American
English.
Methodology: the major method to be employed is quantitative. Besides, contrastive analysis is also used.Therefore, all considerations, comment and conclusions in this presentation are largely based on:
- Survey questionnaires- Statistics, descriptions and analysis of the collected and selected data- Personal observations and experience
Situations:- Situation 1: How would informants verbally extend condolences to the following person whose
father/mother has just passed away?
- Situation 2: How would informants verbally extend condolences to the following person whose spousehas just passed away?
- Situation 3: How would informants verbally extend condolences to the following person whose child hasjust passed away?
II, Development
Questionnaires were delivered to 12 Vietnamese informants and 12 foreign people (English, Australian and
American) and collected directly. And then, we analyzed critically the collected materials and found down some
conclusions:
