An Introduction to the Latin Mass The Holy Sacrice of the Mass was celebrated in the Extraordinary Form (in Latin) for centuries. With the advent of the Second Vatican Council, not only did the words and the language of the Mass change, but so did the structure. As part of our Catholic heritage, this form of the Mass has played a large part in the development of our Catholic identity and is the basis of the Ordinary Form of the Mass that all of us are familiar with today. Join Fr. Philip in a three week presentation on the Latin (Tridentine) Mass, which will explore the basics of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass in order to give a better understanding of the words, language, and structure of this most holy prayer. We hope this experience will assist you in gaining a respect and appreciation for the Extraordinary Form of the Holy Sacrice of the Mass that is such a rich part of our Catholic heritage. We also hope this experience will assist you in gaining a better appreciation and a deeper love for the Ordinary Form of the Holy Sacrice of the Mass that we have all become so familiar with over the last 40 years. The Introduction is divided into three separate Sunday sessions, with dierent information presented at each session. For those who cannot attend the afternoon sessions on Sunday, the same information will be presented in the Saturday morning sessions. That is, for a given weekend, you can attend either the Saturday or Sunday sessions as the information on a particular weekend will be the same. However, each consecutive weekend session will build on the previous weekend session's information; therefore, we encourage you to try to attend all three. Session 1: Saturday, April 14 (9:00am 10:30am) OR Sunday, April 15 (4:00pm 5:30pm) Session 2: Saturday, April 21 (9:00am 10:30am) OR Sunday, April 22 (4:00pm 5:30pm) Session 3: Saturday, April 28 (9:00am 10:30am) OR Sunday, April 29 (4:00pm 5:30pm) On Sunday, May 6th, we will wrap it all up with the celebration of the Latin (Tridentine) Mass at 4:00pm in the Church. If you've never experienced the Latin Mass, or if it's been years, please come. We'd love to have you! An Introduction to the Latin Mass

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated  in

With  the  advent  of  the  Second  Vatican  Council,

not only did  the words and  the  language of  the

our Catholic heritage,  this  form of  the Mass has

played  a  large  part  in  the  development  of  our

Catholic  identity and  is the basis of the Ordinary

Form of  the Mass that all of us are  familiar with

today.

Join  Fr.  Philip  in  a  three week  presentation  on

the  Latin  (Tridentine) Mass,  which will  explore

the basics of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass

prayer.

We hope this experience will assist you in gaining

a  respect and appreciation  for  the Extraordinary

a rich part of our Catholic heritage. We also hope

this experience will assist you  in gaining a better

appreciation and a deeper  love  for  the Ordinary

Form of  the Holy  Sacrifice of  the Mass  that we

have all become so familiar with over the  last 40

years.

The  Introduction  is  divided  into  three  separate

GOD’S MERCY Today’s reading from the second book of Chronicles contains a sort of “mini-history” of Israel. It highlights God’s mercies in choosing Cyrus the Persian to be an instrument of deliverance when the people were in captivity in Babylon. Despite their sinfulness and the deserved punishment they were undergoing, God’s mercy was lavished on the people in the form of a mirac-ulous act of liberation. The Letter to the Ephesians, in much more theological terms, gives a similar account of a God “who brought us to life with Christ—by grace you have been saved.” The author stress-es that it was when we were “dead in our transgressions” that God saved us, an act of pure grace. He emphasizes that it is not our own efforts that freed us from sin (“this is not from you”); rather, “it is the gift of God.” This, of course, is the heart of the entire Pauline corpus, that salvation comes to us by faith in God’s mercy, revealed in the death of Jesus. Rose Vestments Only two Sundays a year suggest the wearing of rose-colored vestments. Because they are so seldom used, many parishes do not have them, so violet can be worn on those days. These two days are the Fourth Sunday of Lent, which we call Laetare Sun-day, and the third Sunday of Advent, called Gaudete Sunday. Both of these Latin words mean rejoice, and so the color lightens for that brief time in the season to encourage us in our waiting for the feast of Easter or Christmas.

Catechumens, Catechumenate At this time of year, and especially dur-ing Lent, we hear a lot about the cate-chumens. Who are they really? The catechumenate dates back to the early church. So what we have now is a restoration. People who had never been baptized but who wanted to be, joined what is called the “Order of Catechumens.” They went through a process which prepared them to be baptized at East-er. Over the centuries most of this process and terminology disappeared until Vatican II restored this process. The unbap-tized people who are preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil are called the catechumens. Candidates Unlike the word catechumens, the word “candidates” is a fa-miliar one. Most frequently we use it in a political context. At its basic meaning it refers to someone who is seeking some-thing, whether political office, an honor, a degree, or so forth. Before formal entry into the catechumenate, those unbaptized persons seeking the sacraments of initiation are called candi-dates. Mostly we distinguish between the catechumens and the candidates who are already baptized, but who are seeking full communion with the Catholic Church. They are candidates for the sacraments. by Carolyn Thomas (Ministry Resource Update)
