The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized.

In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life’s hills and valleys. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

JESUS’ EXAMPLE OF HELPING OTHERS In today’s second reading Paul offers a wonderful argument to his converts at Corinth for seeking to help those in need. He is dealing with a practical problem, arranging a collection for the poor of the church of Jerusalem; but as he often does, he develops an important teaching about Jesus to make his point. After asking that they show their faith by generous gifts, he reminds them of the “gracious act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, for your sake he became poor, so that by his pov-erty you might become rich” (2 Corinthians 8:9). In the Incarnation our Lord assumed our human nature, certainly becoming poor for one who is God. The ultimate gracious act of this poverty was going to the cross with all its terrible sufferings. By this act of poverty we definitely become rich. Now our sins can be forgiven; we can share in the very life of God through the sacraments; we can attain eternal salvation! Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK O God, who through the grace of adoption chose us to be children of light, grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the

bright light of truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Reflection question: Am I someone whom others see as standing in the bright light of truth? The Monument to the Unborn was recently moved to a more prominent area of the church grounds. Fr. Michael’s decision to move the monument was to serve as a witness of our pro-life community. This project required special skills and equipment and so we approached Carol Clobridge, the Chapel Manager of Blount & Curry Funeral Home on Hillsborough Ave. whose parent company, Stewart Enterprises, owns not only funeral chapels but cemeteries also. Their area cemetery managers reviewed the work to be done and Carol spoke to the parent company, who agreed to do it as a "Community Outreach Project" for our Incarnation community. With the above in mind, we wish to thank Carol Clobridge, Stewart Enterprises, Ben Marshall, General Manager of Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park, Memorial Park & Woodlawn Memory Gardens, Mike Rubio, Operations Manager of Garden of Memories and Myrtle Hill Cemeteries and all their staff that worked so hard to accomplish our goal.

WELCOME TO OUR NEW PAROCHIAL VICAR Fr. Jairo Leon Atehortua, age 51 is the second oldest of five children born to Aurora Bermudez and Arturo Atehortua in Belen de Umbria, Colombia. In his middle/high school years he stud-ied with the Claretian Fathers, who nur-tured his faith and planted within him a deep spirituality which led him to seek Christ in the religious life. He entered the

seminary in 1986 after being introduced to the Congregation of the Missions who minister to people all over the world. After ordination to the deaconate in 1994, he taught in the semi-nary and continued to teach after ordination to the priesthood as well as working and ministering to surrounding communities. (Ordained on 6/25/1995 for the Congregation of Mission at Funza Colombia) He came to America after a priest friend from Colombia who was ministering to Catholic communities in America shared his apos-tolate experiences with him. This led him to seek permission from his Community to come to America and work with God’s people here. In June 1999, he arrived at Our Lady Queen of Peace, New Port Richey where he ministered to both the English & Spanish com-munities
