What is ICAO?International Civil Aviation Organisation

• Specialised agency of the UN• Established by Chicago Convention in 1944

– now ratified by 190 States

Relevant Tasks:

• Safe, efficient and orderly evolution of international civil aviation

• Sets Standards and Recommended practices – Published as annexes to original convention– Approx 11,000 SARPs in 18 annexes

• Audit of all member states to establish compliance with the SARPS

(SARPs)– the critical elements of a safety oversight

system–relevant safety practices and procedures

• Comprehensive systems approach• All states to be audited in period 2005-2010
