Poignant to see the passing of one of our times real heroes, cover starNelson Mandela, at the time of going to print. Timely for our other coverstar Idris Elba that his new movie Mandela: The Long Walk Home is oneof a clutch of Oscar-pointed lms released in the UK in January. RussellBrand recently got the middle-income huddled masses all of a utter withhis infectious rejection of Paxmans condescension and the facade ofparliamentary democracy. He may not have answers but sometimes you canbe a hero merely by asking the question. A little of that whiff of revolt hangsin the air at IG:LU currently - with its F1RST AGAINST THE WALL show.Perhaps artists can be heroes too. Time to re-appropriate that word fromthe fallen-or-injured-in-the-line-of-work-then-abandonded-to-charity-by-the-government squaddies. Perhaps they dont need our donations so much asan employer that respects their health and their lives. Ouch.

So this, dearest reader, is 2014. How does it look to you? Have you peeled off thesellophane yet or are you saving the shiny? On pages 4/5 youll nd details of somene and extensive events as part of the Highlands contribution to Homecoming2014 - it is, the government have decided, going to be a big year. But for now, letsconcentrate on January. Whasson? ART: As mentioned that IG:LU show continues- worth half an hour of anyones life - and news of Silver Of The Stars coming toIMAG - with celebrity silverware to share drinks with a friend. | FILM: Cripes, reallyso much Oscar action its daft - and thats not even including two De Niro lms,a Spike Jonze ick and our dark horse tip - American Hussle | KIDS: Shhh,

theyre nally asleep after all that excitement. | MUSIC: Newton s back, The Eaglehave a new Battle of the Bands starting, The Vatersay Boys bite off two days atIronworks, Gordie Makeeman s at Eden Court and Pop Campaign &DounreayBeach Party are at Mad Hatters | SPECIALS: What links Churchill, WhooperSwans, Bread, Ethiopia, Kangaroos and Burns Night ? | SPORT : Sled-dogs,skiers and El Kessocko . | THEATRE: Scottish Ballets lush production of Hansel& Gretel promises sweet entertainment, Dr Phil Hammond will advise and amuse(advuse?) on the NHS and I Am The Tag Team Champions features comedy andwrestling. Obviously. Elsewhere, news of an Apple designers sexy thermostat plusless glamorous ways to keep warm, Ken musing on hexadecimal, an exotic foodreview and an interview with Imperial Musics proprietor. It was during the UK premiere of MANDELA: THE LONG WALK TO FREEDOM [1] (03JAN) that the great mans death was announced, meaning that even more attention isnow being given to the biopic based on Nelsons autobiography. And perhaps even morelikelihood that IDRIS ELBA, playing the role of Madiba, will nd himself anointed with anOscar. Initial reviews suggest that its a powerful portrayal, although steering well clear ofany controversy.

That lm is just one of many notable releases this month as the glut of US lms makingsure theyre out in time for Academy Award nominations, come to UK screens. This lookslike being one of the tightest battles in years, with another lm examining black history,Steve McQueens 12 YEARS A SLAVE [2] (10 JAN) also impressing critics, particularly theperformances from CHIWETEL EJIOFOR and LUPITA NYONGO alongside established starsBRAD PITT, BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH (swoon) and MICHAEL FASSBENDER (semi-swoon).

Look out too for awards for THE RAILWAY MAN [3] (01 JAN) (COLIN FIRTH and NICOLEKIDMAN in the true story of a victim from World War IIs Death Railway looking for those

responsible for his torture),AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY [4]

(17 JAN) (CUMBERBATCHpopping up again, this time alongside MERYL STREEP and JULIA ROBERTS in a blackcomedy about a dysfunctional Oklahoma family) and INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (24 JAN)(CAREY MULLIGAN aka Mrs Mumford starring in the COEN BROTHERS latest, looking backat the birth of modern folk music in 1961 Greenwich Village).

THE WOLF OF WALL STREET [5] (EDEN COURT, 17-30 JAN) is by all accounts a return toform for Americas greatest living lmmaker, MARTIN SCORSESE, based on the real-lifeaccount of a corrupt stockbrokers rise and fall. Its also the fth collaboration betweenthe director and his current muse LEONARDO DICAPRIO, whereas Martys old favouriteROBERT DE NIRO seems these days to be acting his way on autopilot through whateverhes offered, content just to take the pay cheques. And this month that means LASTVEGAS [6] (03 JAN) (in which, alongside MICHAEL DOUGLAS, KEVIN KLINE and MORGANFREEMAN, he plays the part of a sixty-something throwing a bachelor party in Vegas) and, depressingly, GRUDGE MATCH [7] (24 JAN) (in which pair of ageing boxing rivals arecoaxed out of retirement to ght one nal bout -- 30 years after their last match. Hes upagainst SLY STALLONE which makes for the terrifying prospect of Raging Bull meets Rocky ,without any of the greatness/ redeeming features of either).

And the lm doesnt end there this month. Look out for the INVERNESS FILM FANSMIDWINTER SUN SEASON at EDEN COURT (including the French classic PLEIN SOLEIL on 21 JAN), the BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL on 30 JAN at EDEN COURT and theexcellent KINGUSSIE FOOD ON FILM FESTIVAL from 30 JAN-02 FEB with loads of grub-related movies including DELICATESSEN, VOLVER and TAMPOPO . Hi. If Ive got my calculations rightyou should be reading this duringthat awkward no-mans land betweenChristmas and New Year, between

turkey and steak pie, between festivefrolics and more festive frolics. The bitwhere you have to go back to work forjust one or two days during a fortnightoff because your holiday allowancewont stretch or theres no one toprovide cover. If thats the case thenMerry Christmas for last week. Ifeveryone got what they wanted weshould by enjoying world peace andtherell be a pony in your back yard

happily munching all that long grassthough youll just now be realisingthat, no way is there enough grass tosustain a pony for very long and shortlythe enormous bills for straw will startarriving not to mention the stablethat needs building and all that tackyouve still to buy but hey (pardon thepun) - your daughters worth it. Its traditional at this time of year to

look back and reect on the past 12months. For me they included a pretty

signicant birthday and that in manyways was the turning point, the what-am-I-doing-with-my-life moment and thepoint at which I decided I should be

using more of the knowledge I had tolearn when I did my degree all thosemany years ago - you know so thatthose particular four years of my lifewont have been wasted. At college we learned what everyoneand his dog now knows from birthbut for us was a fairly new concept:computers use a series of 0s and 1sto do their, well, computing I suppose. They deal in whats called binary orbase 2 numbers, e.g. 1110 (or aswed usually say, 14).This is all welland good but a bit cumbersome, sowe use other number systems suchas hexadecimal to deal with bytes, kilo-bytes, mega-bytes and now terra-bytesetc. Hex, as its known, is base 16 ituses the digits 0-9 plus the letters A-Fso 1110 (or 14) becomes E - simplereally.

are hex for 29 the Tesco clothingrange FF is 255 - hours of amusementif youre that way inclined, which I am.Anyway, in honour of my years of diligent

study I have decided to start countingmy birthdays in hexadecimal - as of thisyear, if anyone asks my age, and theydont specify they want it in decimal,I shall say 32 and leave them todecided if they want to create a sceneby questioning it. Forget age-defyingmakeup, counting in hexadecimal canght the major sign of ageing by literallymaking the number of years youvebeen around seem smaller. CAUTION: whilst using alternativenumber bases can be great fun itwont always work to your advantage. For example if youre 28 (decimal)this becomes 1C in hex which willonly confuse things. Also you must becareful which number base you usemy age in octal (base 8) is 62 whichisnt doing me any favours at all! Ingeneral though, for birthdays youll

seem younger if you use a numberbase greater than 10. KEN

    > CLUBBING > CLASSICAL > FOLK > JAZZ/WORLD > ROCK > MORE >

Sounds Old & NewNEWTON FAULKNER [1] has much to answer for, not least endowing legitimacy onthat crusty-round-the-campre-with-acoustic-guitar-playing-Kumbayah vibe. Which in turnspawned Ed Sheeran. Posterity wont forget whos to blame. Indubitably, FaulknersHighland tour, which takes in IRONWORKS on 26 JAN, will be packed to the rafters. Meh.But, hey, if you love him (and we know some of you that do), enjoy it!

Also bound to be popular is THE VATERSAY BOYS [2] doing a two night stint atIRONWORKS on 24 & 25 JAN when bouncing along to their rumbustuous contemporarytake on traditional sounds will be nigh on compulsory. And more rootsy ebullience comesfrom GORDIE MAKEEMAN & HIS RHYTHM BOYS [3] at EDEN COURT on 31 JAN as thefellow nicknamed Crazy Legs brings his mix of frenzied jigging and bluegrass vocals totown, accompanied by irresistibly uplifting music. Theyve won a whole load of awards andthis shindig should show why.

Its a good month for music at EDEN COURT with another interesting prospect lookinglike being NORTHERN LIGHTS on 18 JAN. The enterprise brings together six world-classmusicians from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Scandinavia in a cross-cultural celebrationof new music that bridges the divide between folk and classical, the traditional and theavant-garde in six new compositions. Should be good.

January also marks the start of a BATTLE OF THE BANDS competition at THE EAGLE,taking place every FRI and SAT throughout the month. Eighteen slots will be made availableat the Baron Taylors Street venue in the city centre for musicians across from the Highlandsto showcase their skills where they will be judged by an eclectic pool of local tastemakersand musicians. The grand nale has been set for FRI 31, when the victorious band will be

presented with a prize that includes recording a single at Gargleblast Studios in Hamiltonwith producer Andy Miller (Mogwai, The Fratellis) and the shooting of a professional videocourtesy of Caithness based lm company Big Box Network, to be directed by CharlieWilson. For more see facebook.com/eaglebar.inverness

Friday and Saturday each week also nd a plethora of new bands from all over Scotlandplaying MAD HATTERS and, even if you may not have heard of them before, there areoften some real gems to be found. This month, for their names alone, well be headingalong on SAT 25 JAN for POP CAMPAIGN [4] and DOUNREAY BEACH PARTY [5] . Thefollowing week, on FRI 31 JAN, again at MAD HATTERS, top local combo LITTLE MILL OF

HAPPINESS [6] will hopefully be proving just why we believe theyre on the brink of doingsomething very special..

For anyone who loves music, record shops

are a unique source of wonder and delight, atleast if youre of a certain generation. Thesedays, unfortunately, as Spotify et al stomp theirjackboots across the cultural consciousness, record shops as physical places of pilgrimage area dying breed. Social networking means you dontneed to spend your Saturday afternoons moochingabout and icking through the racks with likeminded souls in the hope of discovering somethingthatll change your life. And thats sad.Nevertheless there are some admirable souls stillying the ag and we have one in our midst in theform of MARK STUMBLES , owner of IMPERIALMUSIC in the Victorian Market.Having started Imperial in Bristol back in 1996,he built such a reputation for the place that itwas named one of the ten best independentrecord shops in the country before its closure in2004. Bristols loss was our gain though and in

April 2009 he moved up here, opening Imperialdeep in the bowels of the market and creating awonderland for record lovers, providing a totallydifferent experience to the corporate homogeneityof the likes of HMV.Enduring cold winters and driven by a genuine lovefor music, even he admits that its sometimeshard to be optimistic about the future of physicallyselling things, particularly CDs. One glimmer of

light though comes in the form of vinyl, the formatthat seems to be making a comeback and onsome days accounts for almost 80% of his sales. No wonder as some of the stuff in his shop,

particularly the lavish box sets are truly

things of beauty in a way that an MP3 download

will never be.Check out the shop and show your support for aplace that makes the world that little bit better. And in the meantime, here are some of the songsthat Mark loves to listen to right now:

Its that time of the year again when you think it might be rather a ne idea to buy yourselfa husky, such is the beauty of the canine competitors in the AVIEMORE SLED DOG RALLY at GLENMORE FOREST Park on SAT 25 & SUN 26. From just 20 entries in 1984, the eventhas grown to be one of the most important dates on the calendar for the self-styled UKMushing Family. Over 200 teams are expected this year, with those gorgeous dogs pullingsleds over a picture postcard course that may even, if meteorologists are to be believed,

be covered in snow this year. And its a great spectacle to witness, so for more detailshead to siberianhuskyclub.org.uk

This year the slopes opened earlier than ever and it looks like snowsports fans shouldhave plenty of opportunities to hone their skills in the months ahead. And if you want to getcompetitive about it, its always worth checking out snowsportscotland.org where you cannd details of upcoming events, this months highlight being the GORDON SKIERS OPEN at THE LECHT on SAT 18 JAN. Theres even a Bairns Race for the prodigiously talentedyoungsters.

Talking of prodigious talent, DUNDEE UTDs Ryan Gauld has it in spades and is already

being whispered about as the most promising Scottish player of his generation, withscouts not just from the Premiership, but also from Real Madrid and Barcelona checkingout his every move. Hes the most notable member of a young team playing with realpanache and moving up the SPL table accordingly, so itll be interesting to see how theycope when they come to town to face INVERNESS CALEDONIAN THISTLE (11 JAN) andROSS COUNTY (18 JAN).

County are having a wretched season so far and ICT are trying to maintain momentumafter the departure of Terry Butcher and arrival of Yogi Hughes, so theres lots at stakewhen the two meet in Inverness on NEW YEARS DAY for the rst EL KESSOCKO of 2014.

Should be the perfect way to blow away those Hogmanay hangovers, though there mightbe some sorrows to be drowned afterwards. For County its a particularly crucial month, with visits from ST JOHNSTONE and HEARTS, while Caley wont want to be distracted bythe forthcoming League Cup semi nal against HEARTS (and its ludicrous, anti-HighlandsEdinburgh location/noon kick off) on 02 FEB

    THEATRE

    Going Live.

    DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

    CABARET > COMEDY >DANCE > DRAMA >MUSICALS >MORE >

The festive season draws to a close with the last frenetic shenanigans of the EdenCourt panto, SLEEPING BEAUTY , which slaps its last thigh on 05 JAN. Its perhaps alittle too much to hope that a trip to the theatre will induce mass desire to take in liveperformance on a regular basis, but hopefully at least a few people will have decided tomake 2014 the year that they take in the original 3D experience a little more often.

And this month offers plenty of opportunities to full such resolutions with a widearray of entertainment on offer taking in a diverse mix of genres, the most notablebeing SCOTTISH BALLETs production of HANSEL & GRETEL [1] at EDEN COURT from2225 JAN. As weve come to expect from SB, this is a rather special take on the story,Christopher Hampsons delightfully inventive production, relocating the Grimm Brothersfamous fairy tale to the 1950s and incorporating the stories and imagination of thepeople of Scotland. Over the past year participants of all ages, through creative writingand visual art competitions, have helped shape the show and the result already lookslike being one of the highlights of the year ahead.

More audience input and just as inventive is I AM THE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONS [2] atMAD HATTERS on SAT 01 FEB. Continuing the RocknWrestle theme that popped itshead over the barricades last year, this is a live comedy production by fans, for fansand was a sell out at last years Edinburgh Fringe festival. Billing itself as a showabout life, fandom, geekiness and the wild world of the squared circle, with stand up,improv, special guests and more , it promises to be a lot of fun, with comedians BILLYKIRKWOOD and CHRIS BROOKER marshalling the mayhem.

Rather gentler humour as a familiar face from the TV, PHIL HAMMOND brings his GAMESTO PLAY WITH YOUR DOCTOR [3] to EDEN COURT on SUN 26 JAN. As both a practicing

doctor and campaigning journalist, he sees things from both sides of the desk, so expectsome underlying serious points to be made in a show that also teaches you how to sing your symptoms, sniff a thermometer, diagnose your doctor, arm wrestle for drugs, getpast the bearded receptionist and get out of the NHS alive .

Finally a heads up for THE SUICIDE at EDEN COURTs ONETOUCH on 05 FEB. NikolaiErdmans black comedy was originally banned by Stalin and is widely considered to beone of the nest plays produced in the Soviet Union. Erdmans controversial piece oftheatre still shares some parallels with todays world as will no doubt be demonstratedwhen a cast of HND Acting students from Inverness College give their take on this rarely

produced farcical tale. Book now and remind yourself of just how good theatre can be.
