As 2015 begins, it’s no surprise to see that IG:LU in CHURCH ST is once again fl ying the fl ag for interesting new artists, just as it has done since it fi rst opened. And this month there’s a trio of exciting shows demonstrating a diversity of styles. If you’re quick you can still catch ‘CREATING WAVES AND MAKING BEAUTIFUL MARKS’ [1] by PAULINE BURNSIDE which runs until 30 JAN and which fi nds the artist using a quote from Hunter S Thompson as the title for an exhibition featuring some splendid pieces drawing on infl uences as diverse as Aubrey Beardsley, sixties psychedelia and comic book illustration. It’s impressive stuff.

More abstract, but just as powerful is the work of JULIA JOHAM, whose ‘MIRACLES OF LOVE 2010’ [2] runs from 09–22 FEB. Ostensibly looking at how love affects us in many different ways, the works will resonate with fans of Jasper Johns, Rothko and the like.

Finally, from 27 FEB–13 MAR, it’s the turn of GARETH GITTINS [3], with a solo show that builds on his degree work at Moray School Of Arts. His artist’s statement says, “my works are non-subjective, an exploration into the possibilities of both the application and removal of paint, and how through this visceral process my mind is taken away from the everyday frameworks of life and helps me to understand one’s own personal circumstances.” To be honest it’s the kind of buzzword-packed statement that’s rather too prevalent from art school graduates these days, but thankfully his work is strong enough to transcend such rote philosophising. He looks like a real talent for the future.

More burgeoning talent at THE SHED in EVANTON on 07 FEB when the excellent PLAN B collective present SHUFFLE, subtitled “a shedful of makars, movers and makers”. Celebrating the work of established and emerging Highland talent, there’s music, dance, spoken word, fi lm, theatre, comedy and visual art, all curated by Frank McConnell and John McGeoch. 10

There’s only one fi lm that’ll be getting all the critical attention this month and that’s…the SHAUN THE SHEEP MOVIE [1] (06 FEB). Oh would that it were so, since the full-length version of the spin off from Wallace and Gromit, with voicing from OMID DJALILI and JOHN SPARKES among others, looks far worthier of column inches than the fl ick that’s sadly going to get them, the “long awaited” movie of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY [2] (13 FEB). After his creepily charismatic turn in The Fall, JAMIE DORNAN takes on the role of Mr Grey, but word has it that the whole thing is even less daring than the porn-for-people-who-don’t-like-porn book. File it alongside the month’s other rom-coms, THE WEDDING RINGER (20 FEB) and FOCUS (27 FEB), the latter featuring the excellent MARGOT ROBBIE and the never knowingly out of work WILL SMITH. And, of course, there’s always Queen Of The Romcom, JENNIFER ANNISTON, whose CAKE [3] is out on 20 FEB, though this is far bleaker than her usual frothy fare, involving visions of a widower’s dead wife, suicide and the like. Nice to see her showing what a good actress she can be when she gets the right script.

Much more interesting is JUPITER ASCENDING [4] (06 FEB), the new Wachowksi’s movie with current Hollywood Golden Boy EDDIE REDMAYNE alongside CHANNING TATUM and MILA KUNIS – who plays the Jupiter of the title, teaming up with Tatum’s interplanetary warrior to change the Earth’s destiny. Makes a fi ne companion to two other time/space warping releases this month, PROJECT ALMANAC (13 FEB) and PREDESTINATION [5] (20 FEB). The former is a found-footage time machine adventure, while the latter is an Aussie yarn starring ETHAN HAWKE and based on an excellent book, All You Zombies. The plot uses the tried-and-trusted trope of pursuing a criminal through time, but has been well received. Two other critically acclaimed dramas that might make Inverness are Brit drama DUKE OF BURGUNDY (20 FEB) and IT FOLLOWS [6] (27 FEB), the latter a horror fl ick with simple old-fashioned scares.

You’ll be hearing lots about SELMA [7] (06 FEB), which picked up a Golden Globe and will be in the running at the Oscars. A chronicle of Martin Luther King’s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama in 1965, it stars DAVID OYELOWO as M.L.K. and also sees the welcome return to the big screen of TIM ROTH.

Rather more sedate is THE SECOND BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL [8] (26 FEB), the sequel to 2012’s ‘Best Exotic…’, starring Judi Dench and Bill Nighy, while at the other end of the Brit spectrum is CATCH ME DADDY (27 FEB) a bleak affair featuring non-pro actors all about honour killing. Don’t expect many laughs.

We told you last month about the excellent A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, set in 80s New York – you can still catch it at EDEN COURT in Feb, along with the also recommended INHERENT VICE from Paul Thomas Anderson. Watch out at EC too for Korean drama A HARD DAY (07 FEB), another Golden Globe winner, WHIPLASH (20–26 FEB) and the LGBT HISTORY MONTH featuring the excellent HOCKNEY documentary (01 FEB) and MY BEAUTIFUL LAUNDRETTE (15 FEB).

The INVERNESS MUSIC FESTIVAL, which takes place at EDEN COURT from 23 FEB-04 MAR is actually something of a misnomer since it covers a wide range of disciplines with not only choral, vocal and instrumental music, but also dancing and speech & drama.

There has been a Music Festival in Inverness since 1922. This started as a few classes in one venue on one day, but now into the 21st Century, there can be over 1,100 entries representing more than 4,000 participants. This increase has mainly been in the last decade where entries have trebled. Per head of population, this has to make it one of the biggest festivals of its kind in the U.K.

There are eighty three trophies, shields and cups awarded at various classes, as well as six levels of certifi cate. The competitive element of the Festival culminates with the prestigious Curtis Craig Competition, the winner of which receives the Curtis Craig Trophy; all other performers receive a commemorative medal. Covering a wide range of age groups from young children to the retired, it’s always popular, so make sure to get your tickets early..

CLUBBINGCLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

> CLUBBING > CLASSICAL > FOLK > JAZZ/WORLD > ROCK > MORE… >

Even Better Than The Real Thing?

MUSIC

It’s all going tribute-tastic this month, with acts seemingly clambering over each other to impersonate their idols, many of them rock acts from days long gone. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing, especially since it keeps many of our young folk from joining the ever-growing cult of winsome-yet-perky singer/songwriterdom. Listen kids, the world doesn’t need any more Ed Sheerans. One’s more than enough.

The most prestigious of the tribute acts are RUMOURS OF FLEETWOOD MAC who play EDEN COURT on 19 FEB. They’re arguably even more successful than the (recently reformed) real thing and if you’ve seen them up here in the past you’ll know they nail the band’s back catalogue, though without the messy domestic onstage travails. Big things are expected too from LIVEWIRE AC/DC (IRONWORKS, 21 FEB) and HATS OFF TO LED ZEPPELIN (EDEN COURT, 01 MAR), while even Dire Straits tribute combo MONEY FOR NOTHING (IRONWORKS, 14 FEB) ought to provide pleasure for them that love the whole Knopfl er thing. Meanwhile SCOOTY & THE SKYHOOKS (IRONWORKS, 27 & 28 FEB) are almost a tribute to themselves these days having gone from party band of days of yore to hugely popular purveyors of pop/R’nB/soul classics. Best of all the retro stuff might be THE SIMON & GARFUNKEL STORY [1] at EDEN COURT on 22 FEB as original fi lm footage and a full live band straight from the West End combine to run through a quite extraordinary back catalogue, commemorating fi fty years since the duo fi rst started.

If it’s traditional music you’re after then there are a couple of ace gigs in store in the form of DUNCAN CHISHOLM: THE GATHERING [2] at EDEN COURT on 14 FEB and the marvellous trio of MICHAEL MCGOLDRICK, JOHN MCCUSKER AND JOHN DOYLE [3] at the same venue on 17 FEB. Presumably they, along with most of the audience will be fresh from January’s Celtic Connections, so expect the fi res still to be burning in their performances.

PRIDES [4] (IRONWORKS, 05 FEB), were very much darlings of the music press as well as playing the closing ceremony of the Commonwealth Games, but such is the ephemerality of such things that their star had begun to wane somewhat in the intervening months. More recently however the Glasgow synthpoppers have again found themselves attracting critical plaudits, being XFM ‘Great Xpectations’ artist a couple of days back and playing the Club NME New Year’s Eve Ball at Londons über-cool KOKO (before hotfooting it to spend New Year in Aviemore). Hopefully this gig will mark the beginning of an exciting year for them. Get along and be a part of it.

CLASSICAL THU 29 JANMARAIKE BRÜNING @ Inverness Town House, 1pm.

FRI 20 FEBLANA TROTOVSEK AND YOKO MISUMI @ Inverness Town House, 1pm.Violinist Lana Trotovsek and pianist Yoko Misumi perform Ravel’s Sonatine with its early jazz influences, followed by G minor Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini, known as The Devil’s Trill Sonata and end with Igor Frolov’s fantasy arrangement of tunes from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

PASSACAGLIA @ Nairn Comm Centre, 7pm. After a very popular previous visit to Nairn, Passacaglia return with another eclectic programme of Baroque music. musicnairn.org.uk, 01667 455701

BBC SSO @ Eden Court, 8pm.“I believe in civilisation” said Jean Sibelius, and amidst the turmoil and uncertainty of the early 20th century, he created a final symphony of monumental grandeur and elemental strength. Sibelius’ Seventh Symphony might just be the greatest since Beethoven; what’s certain is that few composers share such a profound kinship. Alina Pogostkina finds the strength and calm at the heart of Beethoven’s lyrical Violin Concerto, and Donald Runnicles, the BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor, frames symphony and concerto alike in two stirring hymns to freedom: two supreme masters, separated by a century but both set alight by the unbreakable power of the human spirit.

SUN 22 FEBSAX SERENADE WITH AMY DICKSON (SAXOPHONE) @ Eden Court, 7.30pm.Amy Dickson, the young Classical Brit-winning, chart-topping saxophonist, joins the Scottish Ensemble in two powerful pieces for classical sax: Glazunov’s warmly lyrical yet sparklingly virtuosic Saxophone Concerto, and the profound spirituality of Georgian composer Giya Kancheli’s captivating Night Prayers. There’s a journey from darkness to light: Shostakovich’s deeply personal Chamber Symphony

is his dramatic response to the Second World War, while Tchaikovsky’s radiant Serenade for Strings brims over with expressive melody.

WED 25 FEBTHE PIATTI STRING QUARTET @ Inverness Town House, 7.30pm.The Piattis are amongst the UK’s foremost young string quartets, with a host of awards and a critically-acclaimed recording to their name. They have performed in all the major venues around the country including a live BBC Radio 3 broadcast from the Wigmore Hall; the Quartet has also appeared in Australia, Spain, Austria, Ireland, France, Switzerland and Holland.

In the past couple of years Inverness has established itself as the location for some of the best quality amateur boxing in Scotland, but this month sees the visit of a bona fi de professional pugilist in the form of DAVID HAYE [1], who is fronting AN EVENING WITH… at KINGSMILLS HOTEL on FRI 06 FEB. Former unifi ed cruiserweight and WBA heavyweight champion, The Hayemaker, has not fought since stopping Derek Chisora in July 2012, and has endured a frustrating period of injuries and cancellations since, most notably two proposed dates with Tyson Fury, due to a cut in sparring, followed by a shoulder injury, but word among the boxing fraternity is that he hasn’t given up on the prospect of trying for another world title. No doubt he’ll reveal more on the night, along with tales from in and out of the ring. Plus there’s a three course meal and your chance to get your photo taken with him. Call 01294 214277 to order tickets.

Grub is also a backdrop to the FOOD ON FILM FESTIVAL in Kingussie from 05–08 FEB. Back for the eighth year, this looks like being the best yet. Kicking off with a screening of Kiss The Water (produced by local Kate Swann), other fi lms on show include The Joy Luck Club [2], Chef [3] and My Big Fat Greek Wedding [4] as well as the (very, very excellent) Bollywood hit The Lunch Box [5].

One evening will be brought to you by the Creative Media Students of Kingussie High School who’ll be screening a selection of shorts they’ve made including The Wolf Of Walls Street, a take on Scorsese’s hit which is hopefully a little less frisky (and substance-fuelled!) than the original.

On top of all that there are cooking demonstrations, a bread making competition, art exhibitions and more. Full details at kingussiefoodonfi lm.co.uk

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Hit The Snow

28

1

Back before Xmas, when the slopes of Europe were lacking anything in the way of the white stuff and people were complaining about holidays being ruined, the Highlands were yet again proving to be the best place for a bit of snowsport action. If anything conditions have actually been a bit TOO extreme since the turn of the year, but hopefully it will have calmed down a bit in time for the SKI-MOUNTAINEERING [1] events at GLENCOE MOUNTAIN on 21 FEB and NEVIS RANGE on 22 FEB. The winter of 2013 saw the sport, known to afi cionados as SKIMO, coming to the Highlands for the fi rst time and it’s proved a roaring success, with the latter of the above events, the NEVIS RANGE VERTICAL looking particularly fearsome/exhilarating. More details at skimoscotland.co.uk

If you want to experience just how thrilling such outdoor adventures can be without necessarily exposing yourself to the elements, you should head along to the FORT WILLIAM MOUNTAIN FESTIVAL running from 18–22 FEB. This year’s programme celebrates mountain culture in all its forms and promotes the value of the landscape of Lochaber as “the best destination in the UK to live, work and play”. It includes a superb line up of top climbers and explorers, mountain fi lms, inspirational speakers and skills workshops. It caters for a wide spectrum of enthusiasts from armchair adventurers to climbers and mountaineers to mountain bikers and budding wildlife photographers. Full programme at mountainfestival.co.uk

In a similar vein, though concentrating entirely on cinematic splendour, the BANFF MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL at Eden Court on 12 & 13 FEB brings you two evenings of extraordinary short creations featuring fearless adventurers, extreme sports and people generally doing the devil-may-care thing with such gusto that you’ll either come away loving the great outdoors or fi nding visions of the precarious populating your nightmares for ever more. Recent weeks may not have seen much improvement in County’s results, but it’s obvious there’s some talent there, even if it isn’t gelling yet. ICT meanwhile are confounding all doubters with a marvellous mix of pragmatism and verve, the prospect of European football next season a very real possibility. SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Hit The Snow

See Film, P10.

DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE > 31

First things fi rst - coming very soon is Willy Russell’s now legendary musical BLOOD BROTHERS [1] (EC, 02–07 FEB), which tells the tale of twins – separated at birth, growing up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Wet Wet Wet’s MARTI PELLOW returns to the role of the Narrator and MAUREEN NOLAN reprises her role as the tragic Mrs. Johnstone. In short, it’s a major musical – one you won’t want to miss. Go on, go book your tickets - we’ll wait…

One of the strengths of Eden Court comes from its commitment to innovative and exciting dance productions, with this month’s offerings being no exception. If you’re quick you can catch Jasmin Vardimon’s PARK (EC, 31 JAN) which we told you about last month, but pick of a very good bunch for Feb is THE TYPIST [2] (EC, 16 FEB) an exhilarating story of courage, passion and identity (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof meets Almodóvar), created and performed by some of the UK and Spain’s most exceptional music and Flamenco dance artists. Chief among them is KERIEVA MCCORMICK - vocalist, choreographer, composer and multi instrumentalist. She has released two albums to date and is currently recording the soundtrack to The Typist with legendary ONU Sound producer Adrian Sherwood (Sinead O’Connor, Lee Scratch Perry, Primal Scream etc). And, rather splendidly the show features narration from ALEXEI SAYLE. Unmissable we reckon.

More dance with a twist in THREE’S A CROWD [3] (EDEN COURT ONETOUCH, 07 FEB). Harness fl ying and aerial acrobatics are involved in a show that combines “humour, heartbreak and happiness” with a score from the excellent Luke Sutherland.

Equally spectacular is MULAN [4] (EC, 28 FEB) from the RED POPPY PERCUSSION GROUP, China’s top female proponents of the genre. Drumming, classical Chinese music, dance and, er, kung fu combine for something that looks (and sounds) pretty impressive.

After all that, BRENDAN COLE’s A NIGHT TO REMEMBER [5] (EC 24 & 25 FEB) might seem a bit vanilla, but you can expect something of an extravaganza from the likeable Strictly star. Alas, no special appearances from the top-notch celeb dancers who made the most recent series the best yet, but there should be enough nifty footwork to keep everyone happy.

It’s not just dance with this also being a particularly strong month for humour. THE COMPLETE HISTORY OF COMEDY (ABRIDGED) [6] at EC on 10 FEB fi nds the acclaimed Reduced Shakespeare Company, who’ve already taken on The Bard and The Bible turning their impressive imagination to a whistle-stop journey through the story of what makes us laugh. Read our interview with them on P46.

And providing a contemporary example will be TV’s Chatty Man ALAN CARR [7], who comes to Eden Court on 26 & 27 FEB. A different - rather more familiar up here - take on camp comedy shtick comes from CRAIG HILL [8] (EC on 14 FEB).

Lower Face, Nose & Mouth RegionIn the lower face region we use Juvederm and Restylane ller products. These are smooth gel llers which are injected around the nose and mouth to reduce the appearance of the wrinkles in these areas.

When you are young, the skin naturally contains an abundance of a naturally hydrating substance called hyaluronic acid (HA). As you age, sunlight and other factors will reduce the amount of HA which causes the skin to lose structure and volume.

Using a dermal ller is a safe and eective way to replaced the HA your skin has lost, bringing back volume and gently plumping wrinkles and folds.

If you feel your lips have lost volume, have always had thin lips or one lip bigger than the other, you will be able to get a fuller appearance through use of ller products.

Is it sore? The ller products we use come infused with local anaesthetic however we can also give you additional anaesthetic to ensure an entirely pain free treatment.

SPECIALISED COSMETIC TREATMENTS :Facial AstheticsOver the last few months in ICA we have been taking you step by step through our cosmetic braces system.  We have several other cosmetic treatments one of which includes facial aesthetics.

Demand for Facial Aesthetics has grown rapidly with Botox and Dermal llers being the most requested treatments in the UK. We oer non-surgical anti-wrinkle treatments to both upper and lower portions of the face.

These treatments are discrete, quick and we can easily give you a little local anaesthetic so you don’t have to feel a thing.

Upper Face, Eye & Forehead RegionThese are areas where we are generally treating dynamic lines (those which appear when you make facial expressions.) For these areas we tend to use botox. The active ingredient in the anti wrinkle medicine is called Onabotulinumtoxin A. It is one of the world’s most widely researched medicines with approximately 2300 publications in peer reviewed scientic medical journals.

Who is the product suitable for?The product is suitable for any individual between 18-65.

Is it safe?Over the last 7 years approximately 11.8 million cosmetic anti wrinkle treatments have been recorded in the US alone and they have a 97% satisfaction rate.

How do you treat the lines? It is a simple, quick and easy non-surgical procedure whereby the product is injected into the muscles of the face causing the frown lines.

How does the product work? The product blocks nerve impulses in the muscles that make them contract and hence frown. Because the muscle is temporarily inactivated, the lines on the skin are smoothed.

Does it last forever? No, the results are likely to last around 4 months but there is signicant variation between individuals.

The Oakwood RestaurantDochgarroch, by Inverness 01463 861 481

If the A9 is the Gateway To The Highlands (though two cities and many towns along its length lay vain claim to the title), then the A82 is the Back Road To The Highlands; like Mr Kipling’s Way Through The Woods, where “the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools” and “the otter whistles his mate”. Dark and mysterious as any Coen brothers’ movie with just as many deadly twists and turns. Where those that drive too fast are only as dangerous as those that drive too slow.

As you join us, we sit by a window not 15 paces from the hallowed tarmac of this Highland artery, in The Oakwood – a fairly unassuming converted house nestling between a wooded copse with a hidden country primary school and a canal with pretty cottages and lock gates.

With its quiet setting, cosy interior and close proximity to home, this would have made an ideal location to eat with my #bae, but today my accomplice is some guy I used to know before he was famous.

The upside is that he can eat, the downside is that he never knowingly talks - preferring to communicate by showing me things on his phone. Modern life, eh?

Talking of modern life, this isn’t it. Whilst that may be a curse to those fl ocking to the sharp new interior reviewed last month at the Penta Hotel it will certainly prove a blessing to the local traditionalist or visiting tourist seeking that long-lost quaint old-fashioned wholesome Highland hospitality.

There’s no recessed lighting here, no square plates or food on slates, no neon signs or unisex toilets, no foam on the menu and no brand statements. This is not food as art or art as food – it’s food as food. It’s not sexy or dangerous but it’s good portion sizes, good ingredients and good eating.

Like an ignored toddler, snow tries hard make a nuisance of itself. “Try down south” we say, without raising our eyes, “you might bring

them to a standstill, but not us.” It only serves to make (some kind of) sense of the many scarves (of chiffon and tweed) and hats and gloves hung round the walls – like a classier version of Munlochy’s Clootie Well. It makes less sense of the 250+ mugs hanging from the ceiling – but then sense is vastly over-rated and we have always been partial to a little quirk. I think they were probably for sale, mind.

Our very affable host, Gus, fetches us a jug of iced water and menus. Unusually charitably, this unlicensed establishment refuses point blank to charge you corkage for any beverage you may bring with you. So well done them. The place is quite small and midweek quiet also - so the extensiveness of the menu offers us something of a surprise.

What we had thought would be a ‘bish, bash, bosh’ decision turns out to need careful scrutiny and deliberation. We don’t do all this for our own pleasure - we only take pleasure in doing this for you, 3737

dear reader. So we try to choose for you, rather than ourselves…

So to start, we selected you Home-made Paté with White Toast and Creamy Garlic Mushrooms also with the toast. For those of you that would have preferred the langoustine or Shetland scallops or smoked salmon or Cockburn haggis or white crabmeat cocktail, we apologise.

The toast in both cases was of the sliced white loaf variety – not very Golden Globes, a little more TV Quick awards. However, the paté was proclaimed very good indeed - and there was plenty of it, complete with a little salad to keep our consciences right. The also-plentiful mushrooms were, as described, both creamy and garlicky – somewhere between unfussy and unspectacular.

The arms raised aloft in the Main Course Choices Mental Wrestling Match were those of Butternut Squash Casserole, cooked in Cider with Sun Dried Tomatoes & Exotic Mushrooms, served with (gluten free*) Rice, and Mixed Seafood; Monkfi sh, Halibut, Cod, Haddock, Salmon with Prawns and Crayfi sh Tails, cooked in White Wine and Cream fragrant with Tarragon and fi ne Herbs (also gluten free*). The casserole is homely, sweet and warming, a fully satisfying plateful – the sort you could spend an afternoon in the wilds restoring electricity supplies after. The fi sh jamboree offers an embarassment of swimmy riches, with no two mouthfuls the same. It looks the part, too, with Zed the king prawn proudly standing guard over the whole caboodle as it arrives to the table. Who’s Zed?…*Plenty of gluten-free (and vegan) choices on offer here - go free, coeliacs, go free…

And to to dessert. After considering the nicely named Scotch Mist (meringues and whipped cream with toasted oatmeal and whisky), my pal plumped – perhaps aptly in this strongly traditional establishment – for the Cranachan. This offered much of the benefi ts of the former but included the twin delights of

raspberries and honey. I’ll swear his eyes never left the dish until it was licked clean^. Mesmerising, apparently ^only joking - it’s not like we were at home, is it?

More whisky in my own clunky -named choice; Highland Park Single Malt Whisky & Chocolate Cheesecake. A generous thick slice of creamy indulgence, not overly alcoholic, not overly chocolatey; biscuit base, fl aked choc on top. Quite a refi ned dessert. Personally I felt it wouldn’t have been entirely ruined by the addition of some cream or a splash of intense fruit jus, but sometimes simple is good.

So, the recurring theme here is of competently turned out highly pleasant food that will nourish you and make you feel right at home. With a menu that your mum would be pleased if you brought home and that your nan would feel safe with.

Laudably, The Oakwood are all about the high quality ingredients from sustainable environments that offer the highest standards of animal welfare - coming from Orkney, Shetland, Uist and Dingwall among others – another way they show they understand their target audience.

Which is? Well, situated as it is, between city full of tourists and Nessie, we suspect they do alright from our visiting folk. Plus there’s a fair number of en-routers to Drumnadrochit, Glenmoriston, etc – but we suspect there’s another fair few who haven’t unearthed their new favourite comfort food stop yet. Over to you then…

cool interiorsFeels hot, looks cool‒ introducing the classy Juniper Radiator.

So, it’s February and that means winter hasn’t yet warmed itself into spring. Your heating’s probably still set to fi re up before the alarm clock in the morning and you’re glad of the heat provided by your unsightly radiators if not their aesthetic.

But what if they looked super-cool whether they were actually hot or cold? Wouldn’t that lift the look of your favourite room? Well, take a look at the Juniper Radiator. . .

This sculptural design is created by Juniper Interiors (established eight years ago by siblings Ant and Catherine Steele), and is a labour of love ‒ entirely hand crafted in high quality stainless steel ‒ right down to the polishing, which creates a luxurious mirror fi nish. Each one takes about fi ve days to complete. And in case you’re concerned about sacrifi cing heat for design, there are no concerns there - they deliver a heat output equivalent to cast iron radiators.

It comes in three widths, from 413mm to 833mm so can suit many diff erent room requirements - and the timeless design looks equally at home in both modern and more traditional settings. Which is good, because they’re built to last so they’ll still look good in 100 years time. You’ll probably dry your jet-pack in front of them.

The Juniper Radiator is available online (starting from £1600) exclusively at: www.featureradiators.co.uk - where you’ll also fi nd many other innovative and über-stylish radiators.

Figures just released by the Highland Solicitors Property Centre (HSPC), leaders in Highland property sales for more than 30 years, show that average house prices and total sales value both increased in 2014.

The total value of properties sold by HSPC in 2014 was £193.887 million – 3% up on 2013 and the highest figure since 2008. At the same time, the average house price in the Highlands and Islands increased by 4% compared to 2013, to an average figure of £168,012.

The number of properties sold was down marginally (0.9%) on 2013, notably affected by a slowing of sales around the time of the Independence Referendum in September.

However, an 8% increase in the number of properties being added to the HSPC register during 2014 reflects growing confidence among house sellers. Interest in the Highlands and Islands market is also strong, as indicated by a 5% increase in visitors to the hspc.co.uk website over the past year.

Commenting on the 2014 figures Sarah Woodcock, Manager of HSPC, said:

“The strong total sales value and the rise in average prices is a good indicator that the Highlands property market is stabilising after a number of years of lower confidence due to the general tough economic climate.

“One of the best features of 2014 was the 8% increase in the number of properties coming into HSPC for sale. This not only shows sellers’ belief in the strength of the Highland property market, but reflects continued confidence in the HSPC brand.

“Looking ahead to 2015, a lot will depend on the general economic conditions. While the UK is relatively stable compared to other parts of Europe, it is still a bit of a guessing game. We start the year with positive moves in the Highlands, including the establishment of the University of the Highlands and Islands and the current levels of activity in the Building industry.

“Building on the stable figures we produced in 2014, we certainly hope for another year of steadily growing confidence.”

THE REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY: THE REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY: THE REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY Matthew PearsonEden Court, Inverness, Tue 10 Feb

Having taken on The Bible, Shakespeare, sports and more, the REDUCED SHAKESPEARE COMPANY are turning their whittling skills to no less a subject than the story of what makes us laugh. The bring their COMPLETE HISTORY OF COMEDY (ABRIDGED) to EDEN COURT on 10 FEB, but cast member MATTHEW PEARSON gave us a sneak preview of what to expect. And why.

Who’s got the better yarns- Shakespeare or The Bible? Well, considering Shakespeare didn’t write any of the plots he based his plays on, you’ve got to give this one to the Good Book. It’s the greatest work of literature ever accepted as fact.

When you started thinking about the project, who/what was always going to be included? Comedy is very subjective, so you can’t just put in your personal favourite types of humour – you have to cater for all tastes. Personally, I can’t stand fart jokes, but some less well-educated, less sophisticated and less good-looking people fi nd them hilarious. Also we really had to include Chekhov as he’s one of the greatest writers of all time and he himself considered his plays comedies – when in actual fact they’re about a funny as a fart in a spacesuit (I can’t believe you made me do a fart joke). We make Chekhov’s plays a lot funnier by dropping in some catchphrases from classic sitcoms.

What’s the best joke ever written? Well, since we deal with double entendre in our show, my favourite joke is along those lines: ‘A woman walks into the bar and asks for a double entendre, so the barman gives her one.’ It’s a

perfect mix of brevity, smartness and fi lth.

What do you want people to take away from the show?No less than the idea that the power of comedy can change the world. If people in power sometimes took a step back to appreciate the absurdity of most situations, and instead of getting angry had a good old laugh, the world would be a better, funnier place.

What next for your unique treatment? The next thing we’re going to reduce is the amount of beer in our glasses in the pub after the show.
