Hot on the heels of last months excellent JOHN BYRNE exhibition, INVERNESS MUSEUM

& ART GALLERY (IMAG) is again providing some rather wonderful treats for the eyes in the

form of MODERN MASTERS IN PRINT: MATISSE, PICASSO, DALI & WARHOLfrom 06

DEC. Drawn from the Victoria & Albert Museums renowned print collection, this touring

exhibition explores the work of four great 20th-century artists, the aforementioned Henri

Matisse, Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol. Their works span 75 years and

arguably give birth to the modern age, drawing on everything from psychotherapy and theworld of dreams to the consumerist aesthetic. As well as being rather magnificent to look

at. A great opportunity to see modern masterpieces up close.

IMAG is doing a fine job of engaging with the community and the REMEMBERING

CHRISTMAS PAST, TUE 09 DECSAT 10 JAN in the Room to Discover is no exception. A

display of historic Christmas decorations and Festive fayre from the museums collections

simply sparkles. NB: Room to Discover is sometimes used for other activities - call 01463

237114 to check that the exhibition is open before you go.

Offering a variation on that theme is the FESTIVE FAVOURSevent on THUR 11 DEC from45pm. Head along and get Christmas crafty at this after-school drop-in activity for all the

young at heart, where you can make your own Christmas heart decorations and get glitzy

decorating gingerbread lads and lassies. Mince pies and juice and Christmas cheer will

also be in plentiful supply. No need to book, just drop-in.

Concluding on 06 DEC at IMAG, but thereafter on permanent exhibition in the First Floor

Gallery is WORLD WAR ONE: NESS STORIES. Curated together with pupils from Inverness

Royal Academy, and teams from Highland Archives and Highland Libraries, the exhibition

uses objects from High Life Highlands collections to explore the extraordinarily ordinary

personal stories of those who lived through The Great War. The new research uncovered bythe Academy pupils reveals just how deeply WW1 affected families in the region.

    FILM

    Bring Out The Big Guns

    DOCUMENTARYCOMEDY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

Oh good, another Hobbit film. Actually, those getting weary of the seemingly interminable

franchise will be delighted to learn that THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES

[4]is the conclusion of Peter Jacksons epic retelling of Tolkiens book. And those with

a soft spot for it all will no doubt relish a last chance to get caught up in the goings-on in

Middle Earth. This time round the races of Dwarves, Elves and Men must decide whether

to unite or be destroyed. Difficult choice From 12 DEC.

Another burgeoning franchise presents its latest instalment in the form of PENGUINS OF

MADAGASCAR [2], throwing anthropological sense to the wind with admirable abandon.

An elite undercover task force led by the handsome and husky Agent Classified (voiced

by the justifiably ubiquitous Benedict Cumberbatch) must stop the villainous Dr Octavius

Brine before he destroys the world as we know it. From 05 DEC (EC from 19 DEC).

Another seasonal family flick is GET SANTA [1], a suitably festive romp with Jim Broadbent

as the big fella, waking up in a garage having crashed his sleigh and finding himself on the

run from the police. An excellent cast also includes Stephen Graham, Rafe Spall, Ewen

Bremner and Jodie Whittaker. From 05 DEC.

One of the films of the year is MR TURNERand this month we finally get to see just why

Timothy Spall won Best Actor at Cannes and will no doubt be in the running for an Oscar.

He spent two years learning to paint before taking on the title role of perhaps the worlds

first modern artist and the film is packed with the same breathtaking boldness as Turners

pictures. At EDEN COURT from 05 DEC.

Another fascinating painter biopic is Tim Burtons latest, BIG EYES [7]. Its a drama centred

on the awakening of the painter Margaret Keane, her phenomenal success in the 1950s,

and the subsequent legal difficulties she had with her husband, who claimed credit for her

cute/terrifying goggle-eyed artworks. The wonderful Amy Adams stars. From 26 DEC.This is the time of the year when all the big guns come out in the lead up to the Academy

Award nominations, so youre almost spoilt for choice. Lauded or laughed at will be:

UNBROKEN [6](26 DEC) - Angelina Jolie directs and produces this true story of WW2

    soldiers caught and interned by the Japanese, with a script co-written by the Coen Brothers;

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS [5](26 DEC) - Ridley Scotts biblical epic starring Christian

Bale and Ben Kingsley, and BLACK SEA [3] (05 DEC), the latest from Kevin McDonald,

in which a submarine captain takes a job with a shadowy backer to search the depths for

gold. Jude Law stars. Not sure that DUMB AND DUMBER TOor NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM:

SECRET OF THE TOMBwill troubling the Academy though, popular as they may proveAnd dont miss three glorious films presented by INVERNESS FILM FANS at EDEN COURT

in the form of Ingmar Bergmans THE SEVENTH SEAL(02 DEC), FARGO(16 DEC) and

    THE BLUE ANGEL(30 DEC).

If only there was some sort of special event for kids to look forward to in December, preferably

involving presents and general cheer. Well, unfounded rumours suggest there might be, but

until then were sticking with what we know.

And one thing we do know is that HOMECOMING HALLOWEENis taking place on NESS ISLANDS

on 28 & 29 NOV. The torrential weather put paid to the original event, but so much time and

work had been put into it all, it seemed daft not to let us all experience the spooky fun. And forthose wondering why it wasnt relocated, the whole thing is site-specific, with a whole series of

carefully conceived tableaux, Ness Islands being the only suitable place to stage it all. It would

be a shame to let all the effort from the Council peeps plus John McGeoch and Eden Courts

CREATIVE team go to waste so repay them by heading along for a delightfully scary, even

if slightly late adventure involving the ghosts of returning Scots, summoned by Macbeth. And

then you can turn your thoughts towards the big fella in red

Into December proper and another event thats becoming something of a tradition for

youngsters in the form of WINTER WONDERLAND 2014in WHIN PARK from 1214 DEC. As

you might expect, its all about making Santa and his reindeers welcome as they prepare forthe busy global circumnavigation ahead. Its a fine place for photo opportunities and snaps to

embarrass/warm the hearts of the family for years to come, but dont forget to wrap up warm.

Just as popular, but this time indoors, is the STICKY KIDS CHRISTMAS SINGALONG at

STRATHPEFFER PAVILION on TUE 16 DEC at 10AM. Santa has sent Molly & Mac an invitation to

come to Lapland to perform their action-packed singalong show. Lots of audience participation

and watch out for flying crackers! Suitable for 2-6 year olds. Tickets 6 01997 420124.

Finally, as the Big Day approaches, the little uns will enjoy ONE NIGHT IN SANTAS WORKSHOP

at EDEN COURT from 1620 DEC. Presented by Eden Court CREATIVE whove delighting sell-

out audiences with Ding Dong, Little Blue and Humm-Bug! in previous years, this should be

popular, so get your tickets early. Santas workshop is buzzing with business and everyone is

working hard to get ready in time for Christmas. But at night, whilst Santas little helpers sleep,

the workshop falls silent and the toys have a little fun of their own! Uh-oh

    2015 Here We Come

    MUSIC

Naturally, this months musical offerings will be mere diversions to the general

wassailing leading up to the jiggerypokery of Hogmanay. But there are still some gigs

thatll be drawing the crowds away from their festive preparations and indeed even

topping up the party spirit, beginning with DEACON BLUEat INVERNESS LEISURE on05 DEC. Their performance at Bella a couple of years back showed theyve still got a

huge fanbase and songs like Dignity and Real Gone Girl are wearing surprisingly

well, so expect everyone to go a bit bonkers.

The crowd will be bouncing equally enthusiastically when THE VATERSAY BOYSplayIRONWORKS on 13 DEC. The boys from the Isles do the Party With A Traditional

Soundtrack thing better than most and may even convince those whove written off

the genre as relentlessly fiddly-diddly that its still capable of lifting the heart.

A bit of festive rocknroll nostalgia at EDEN COURT from 1113 DEC with HOLLY ATCHRISTMASwherein tribute act BUDDY HOLLY AND THE CRICKETERS mix the mans

old hits with contemporary classics and Xmas favourites.

If you like your sounds a little more contemporary you cant go wrong with hot young

locals SCHNARFF SCHNARFFwho play their debut IRONWORKS show on 19 DECwith support from Glasgows FOREIGNFOXand local indie-rock act SEARCHING FORDONKEYS. The evening is rounded off with Inverness Indie/Alternative club nightINDIENESSkeeping things going until the early hours.

There are, of course, plenty of opportunities for a knees-up on Hogmanay itself,

most notably the RED HOT HIGHLAND FLINGat NORTHERN MEETING PARK. Nowpretty much a fixture in the festive calendar, 10,000+ people are expected to see

host CRAIG HILL [2](who appears to be after Highland residency status) introduceTHE RED HOT CHILLI PIPERS [1]with special guests MNRAN [4]and THE JULIEFOWLIS BAND [3].

HOOTANANNY should be packed to the rafters for their Hogmanay shindig featuring

THE BIG FAT ELECTRIC CEILIDH BANDand THE MYSTIC SHOES, while THE MARKETBAR opens its doors on 31 DEC for the first time since 2000 for celebrations featuring

JAMIE MARSHALL and THE DISCIPLES OF ROCK. Tickets for both of the above

events are strictly limited so get them now from the respective venues.

After its initial incarnation earlier this year was judged a roaring success, HIGHLANDSFASHION WEEKis back in various venues around town from 0106 DEC with someinteresting initiatives up its (perfectly tailored) sleeve.

Like the campaign to Bring Back The Cape. That being the Inverness Cape, assported by Sherlock and his contemporaries but due for what the HFW organiserscall a revamp to make it current and on trend. With that in mind Project BBTCwill be running throughout the week with celebrity endorsements and the launch ofan exclusive collection. Lets hope Cumberbatch pays his dues and gets involvedsomewhere along the way.

Thats just one of the attractions in store during the week, others including a rangeof masterclasses, a talk at IG:LU on How To Be A Fashion Bloggerand even a pop-up store. The whole shebang concludes with a fashion show at the GLENMORISTONTOWNHOUSE HOTEL featuring a range of local and national designers, showcasingthe best in new fashion and aiming to put the Highlands on the fashionista map.The show will feature models initially chosen from a no make-up selfie competition

headed up by local Lydia Francis.

GARRY JAMES, from the event organiser We Are Giraffe says, I am extremely happythat Highlands Fashion Week is back for a Winter edition, giving designers, modelsand local businesses the chance to showcase their work to a brand new audience.

The support from the locals for the first Highlands Fashion Week was amazing, and wejust hope that it continues and people will get behind this week too.

Garry adds, The models this year are a combination of old and new faces, but the

team is still the same. We put the girls through some rigorous model training, andLydia is the one who has come out on top. I really believe she has a bright careerahead of her and we have a few projects planned for the future together.

    Dressing Up For Xmas

    2

The festive season is upon us and well all be keeping an eye out for Father Christmas.

Or, on the day of the SANTA RUN [1]starting at INVERNESS LEISURE on 03 DEC, a whole

host of beardy folk in red outfits. One of the most successful fund-raising events of the year,

its open to everyone, whether you wish to run, jog or walk around the beautiful 5km route.

For your 15 registration fee all adults will get a full Santa Suit which is yours to keep and

might come in handy on Xmas Eve (say no more). Children under 13 can register for 10 and

you will be able to run/walk together. More details at wildheartsevents.com and if that one

gives you a taste for more, theres another SANTA RUN in Aviemore on 20 DEC.

More dressing up at the latest instalment of the highly successful ROCKNWRESTLE [2]

at IRONWORKS on 12 DEC with quite possible its biggest star to date, DREW GALLOWAY

(or Drew Macintyre, such is the baffling nomenclature business of professional wrestling).

Currently the Evolve Champion and a former WWE intercontinental and WWE tag team

champion, Drew will also be holding a pre-show meet and greet. Also on the card are:

BBC Insane Fight Club star JACK JESTER, NOAM DAR (currently appearing in TNA British

Bootcamp on Challenge TV), BT GUNN, WOLFGANG, LIAM THOMSON, KID FITE, THE

    OWENS TWINS and more.

If you prefer your flashiness on the rink, take advantage on SAT 27 DEC of witnessing

In recent times EL KESSOCKOhas become something of a New Years Day tradition and

its on again this season as ROSS COUNTY take on ICT in Dingwall on 01 JAN. Along with

regular fans were sure therell be plenty of folk home for the hols taking the opportunity to

catch up with old pals in the crowd at a match where points are vital for both teams, albeit

    for very different reasons..

    THEATRE

    A Theatrical Tradition

    DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

    CABARET>COMEDY> DANCE> DRAMA> MUSICALS> MORE >

One of the best things about the Highlands cultural landscape in 2014 has been the

number of quality theatrical productions weve been able to witness, something that might

just have given folk whod never experienced such things a taste for more in the year

ahead. That said, for many going to the theatre is a once-a-year thing and thats just

because of The Panto. So expect tickets to go like hot cakes for ALADDIN [1]at EDEN

COURT from 02 DEC04 JAN, with previous pantos having attracted up to 30,000 people

during their runs. Unlike in some other cities, the Inverness panto doesnt rely on famous

faces to pull in the crowds, preferring instead to offer the tried and trusted thigh-slapping,

cross-dressing and merry mayhem. And Christmas wouldnt be Christmas without it.

Elsewhere there are plenty more panto productions on offer, but curiously, perhaps

due to some act of dramatic synchronicity, three of them are all the same story, DICK

WHITTINGTON. So you can take in the yarn about the fellow with the haversack, the

cat and the dreams of golden streets at LITTLE THEATRE, NAIRN (26 NOV13 DEC),

MACDONALD AVIEMORE RESORT (29 NOV04 JAN) and FLORIANS LITTLE THEATRE (0513 DEC). Presumably theres some sort of prize for anyone going to all three.

Over at STRATHPEFFER PAVILION theyre having no truck
