The Memory of St. Mary of Egypt

St. Mary of Egypt was a repentant harlot. Why does the

Church commemorate her? She led an extreme debauched

life during her youth, yet somehow she ended up going to

Jerusalem for the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.

She was more a tourist than a pilgrim, but a mysterious

power would not let enter the church until she became

conscious of her sins and cried out to the Lord and the

Mother of God for mercy. She was then able to enter the

church, and shaken to the core, she resolved to spend the

rest of her life in prayer and repentance.

What does this message about Mary's life bring us? She

had no future, at least the kind of future that no one wants

to think about. Soon her female charms would wilt and

men would lose interest in her and she would be lonely and

destitute. But in turning to God through repentance and

conversion, she found hope. Not just hope that her earthly

life would be filled with dignity, but most important

that before her is eternal life. The world considers that

repentance is a denial of human dignity. Some atheists saw

believers kneeling in prayer and commented how slavish it

was for someone to kneel. With repentance, the world's

values are turned inside out because repentance offers a

restoration of true dignity and accountability.

Mary of Egypt's story is a story of hope and falling

in love with Christ, the true Light and Beauty. There

are many well-off Christians who became religious. The

servant of God Metropolitan Andrew Sheptitsky OSBM a

descendant from an ancient Ukrainian noble family gave

his personal wealth away. Dolores Hart, an

залитого кровавим потом на Оливній горі. Він бачив

Юду, який наближається до Нього, щоби покласти на

Його святе обличчя поцілунок зради. Він бачив себе із

зв'язаними руками перед римським правителем. Він

бачив свою матір, яка, вмліваючи з болю, йде за

своїм Сином, що, двигаючи важкий хрест, паде під

його тягарем. Він чув свист пагаїв і крик натовпу:

„Розпни, розпни Його!"

Рівночасно Ісус був свідомий того, що навіть

ті, яких Він навчав впродовж трьох років, яким

Він дав стільки любові, покинуть Його і

розбіжаться як стривожені вівці, а навіть голова

апостолів Петро відречеться Його. Все те наводило

на Христа смуток. Євангеліє, яке ми читали, показує

нам Христовий смуток і біль. „Ось

входимо в Єрусалим, — каже Христос,

Син чоловічий буде виданий первосвященикам

та книжникам, і засудять його на смерть та

видадуть поганам. Насміхатимуться з Нього,

бичуватимуть й уб'ють".

Христос був свідомий, що Він терпить за гріхи

aspiring Hollywood actress gave it all up to become a

cloistered nun. Why? Like Mary, they saw Christ the True

Light, precious and inexpressibly beautiful, joyfully left

everything behind.

A fallen woman has no hope of returning to society, all

doors are closed to her. But it is different with God's

mercy. It was a criminal on the cross who Christ said

would be with Him in Paradise. It is God's grace and mercy

that raises us up and makes saints out of sinners, providing

they repent and work with His grace. In Robert Louis

Stevenson's Treasure Island, the pirates sing 'Drink and the

devil will take you to the end'. It is a song of hopelessness,

that one has sinned so much that there is no room for

reform and redemption. All they can do is take the beaten

path to the end.

But the story of St. Mary of Egypt reminds us that if we

fall into the pit and slide to the bottom, turn to God and He

will raise you. "He that falls does he not rise up...and

behold, he that turns away, does he not return?" (Jeremiah

8; 4) We fall but are not obligated to fall deeper and hit

rock bottom. With God's help, we can make a 180 degree

turn and change our life. Great Lent is a reminder of our

freedom, the freedom to leave our former sins behind and

turn to God.

Mar 27: Session 6: Miracles of Jesus Throughout his public ministry, Jesus displayed divine power in the many miracles he performed. Dr. Pitre uncovers a deeper meaning to many of those miracles and how they enlighten our understanding of the Eucharist.

Apr 3: Session 7: Bread of Life Discourse Jesus shocked the Jews of his time by offering his own flesh and blood as real food and real drink to gain eternal life. Was he speaking symbolically, as some argue, or did he mean what he said in ways we’re still trying to understand?
