Page 16: IBSAT IBS Hyderabad Admissions 2011

IBS has a unique and innovative approach to business education, that focuses on providing the right knowledge, imparting the right skills for enduring success in management careers, and shaping the right attitudes.

Knowledge

The right knowledge is clearly a critical success factor in business. The right knowledge implies relevant, contemporary and cutting-edge knowledge, in the theory and practice of a variety of core, functional and integrative subjects. As practice precedes theory in business, equal emphasis is placed on concepts and applications. This blending of ideas and actions is achieved through various pedagogic techniques like lectures, case studies, business games, the summer internship program, the management research project, etc.

Skills

What matters most in business is what one can actually do. Doing well implies mastering and applying the skills - professional, personal and human - required for effective decision-making and execution. IBS trains the students in these skills through a series of soft-skills lab sessions scheduled over the duration of the program.

In addition, case-based learning at IBS helps students develop good analytical skills.

Attitudes

A critical attribute for success in life is cultivating the right attitudes like positive thinking, risk-taking, opportunity seeking, adapting to change, and achieving a proper balance between divergent goals of life. IBS helps students develop the right attitudes, and encourages them to grow into balanced and well-rounded individuals capable of taking up leadership positions.

The IBS Approach

16

Page 17: IBSAT IBS Hyderabad Admissions 2011

The case study method is a key component of the academic program at IBS, which is one of the few institutions in India that has made case studies a critical component of its curriculum.

Management case studies describe the situations faced by practicing managers in a narrative form, and also provide the supporting information necessary to involve students in the decision-making process. These case studies encourage students to think of the possible ways of handling such issues, and help them learn the complexities of decision-making in business and the challenges that managers face every day at work.

Almost all the courses in the IBS program are designed keeping in mind the advantages of the case method. Most of the courses are taught 100% through case studies - the case studies being tailor-made to the requirements of different subject areas and topics. Student evaluation is based on class participation and written reports. Students are encouraged to analyze the issues in-depth by gathering supporting information - either through published sources or by directly interacting with the companies involved.

IBS has dedicated research and content development centers for producing case studies and supporting material. Manned by teams of knowledge workers with many years of academic and corporate experience, these centers develop contemporary and thought-provoking case studies which provide great learning value to the students.

Most of these case studies are also made available to global customers through the European Case Clearing House.

IBS case studies have also been published in several leading management textbooks published in Europe, the USA and the UK.

IBS, offers a balanced mix of case studies based on foreign as well as Indian companies. Most of the case studies on Indian companies focus on issues that have not been tapped by other institutions for management teaching. Written in an easy-to-understand and lucid style, these case studies equip students with the latest information on the developments in the Indian and global business scenarios. IBS case studies have won recognition at international case writing competitions organized by institutions such as indicated in next page.

All IBS students are provided with books of case studies (as part of their courseware package), which are customized for different subject areas.

By learning through the globally accepted and popular case method of learning, students are able to hone their comprehension, analytical and decision-making skills. In addition, case studies help them become better team players and managers.

The student community at IBS is truly diverse; the students come from different states, social and cultural backgrounds, and walks of life. As they become a part of the IBS community, they get an unparalleled exposure to different cultures, languages, and ways of living.

At IBS campus, a Student Council consisting of the Director, a faculty member, and a number of student representatives from the senior and the junior batches organizes a variety of programs and activities throughout the year.

Several student activities are directed towards extending the classroom learning experience. Such activities include organizing seminars on contemporary management issues, publishing in-house magazines, organizing guest lectures, and organizing and participating in inter-business school competitions.
