Large HDD Storage CapacityThe x100 supports up to two internal fixed SATA drives.

DDR2 ECC MemoryThe x100 ships with 533MHz PC2-4200 double data rate II (DDR2) dual-interleaved memoryDIMMs in four sockets. It supports up to 8GB of memory, using industry-standard ECC (ErrorChecking and Correcting) registered DIMMs.

PC2-4200 memory is available in 512MB individual DIMMs and 2GB and 4GB memory kits (two1GB or 2GB DIMMs per kit). The x100 supports either one, two or four DIMMs installed (but notthree).

Industry-Standard Pentium 4 and Celeron ProcessorsThe x100 offers a choice of processors:

2.53GHz single-core Celeron D processor with EM64T, a 533MHz FSB, 1MB of L2 processorcache

2.8, 3.0, 3.2 or 3.4GHz single-core Pentium 4 processor with EM64T, an 800MHz FSB, 1MBof L2 processor cache and Hyper-Threading Technology2.8GHz dual-core Pentium D processor with EM64T, an 800MHz FSB and dual 1MB L2processor caches

Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T) 64-bit extensions allow the Pentium andCeleron processors to use large memory addressing when running with a 64-bit operatingsystem. This can result in higher performance. Additional registers and instructions (SSE3) canfurther boost performance for applications written to use them. Customers should contact theirsoftware provider to determine their software support for EM64T.

Some x100 models feature the new dual-core Pentium D processors, which contain twocomplete processor cores, each with its own 1MB L2 cache. The two cores appear to softwareas two physical processors. The dual-core processors offer considerably higher performance thana same-speed Pentium 4 processor with a single core (although with not quite the sameperformance as a two-processor server would have at the same clock rate).

Hyper-Threading Technology in the Pentium 4 allows one physical processor to act as twological processors that share resources, allowing two programs or threads to executesimultaneously and independently.

By allowing the processor to use resources that would otherwise have been idle, Hyper-Threading Technology provides a performance boost of up to 30% in CPU resource utilization(according to Intel) on multithreading and multitasking operations that can take advantage of thetechnology. Go to http://www.intel.com/products/server/processors/server/xeon/index.htm formore information on Hyper Threading Technology. The full effect of Hyper Threading Technologyrequires an operating system that has been optimized to take advantage of the feature. Go to http://www.intel.com/support/platform/ht/os.htm for a list of these operating systems.

Gigabit Ethernet ControllerThe x100 includes an integrated Broadcom 5721 Gigabit Ethernet controller for up to 10X highermaximum throughput than a 10/100 Ethernet controller. Having an integrated controller saves aPCI slot. Optional PCI adapters offering failover and load balancing between adapters areavailable for better throughput and system availability. It also supports highly secure remotepower management using IPMI 1.5, plus Wake on LAN® and PXE (Preboot ExecutionEnvironment) Flash interface.

Internal Tape StorageThe x100 supports several options for internal half-high tape drives. Supported tapetechnologies include:

DDS5VXA-2Travan-7

Disk/Tape ControllersAll x100 models include an integrated Serial ATA (SATA) controller. The SATA controllerintegrated in the Intel chipset supports up to two internal SATA drives, with maximum datatransfer rates of up to 150MB per second in the SATA models. This is up to 50% faster than theATA-100 controller used in some competitive systems. Operating System RAID (OS RAID) providesoptional support for RAID-0 or RAID-1.

The optional ServeRAID 7t SATA controller provides hardware-assisted support for four RAIDlevels (0, 1, 5, 10).

In addition, the IBM Ultra320 SCSI Controller is a lower-cost, non-RAID, 2-channel SCSIcontroller, with one external port. It is designed for use with external SCSI-based tape drives.

Serial ATA7,200 RPM — 80, 160 or 250GB (500GB maximum)

Drive BaysThe x100 contains five drive bays. Two 3.5-inch bays support fixed SATA drives. This enablesup to two slimline (1.0") SATA drives totaling 500GB, to be installed. A third 3.5-inch bay supportsan optional floppy drive, if required; or an external USB floppy drive may be used.

In addition to the 3.5" HDD bays, there are two half-height 5.25-inch drive bays. Either a 48X3

speed IDE CD-ROM drive or a 48X/32X/48X/16X CD-RW/DVD combo drive (model-specific)ships standard in one of the 5.25-inch bays, leaving one available; a half-high tape drive can beused in the second 5.25” bay.

Temperature-Controlled FansThree strategically located fans provide highly effective system cooling for the x100. Each serverincludes one system fan, one CPU fan, and one integrated into the power supply. This coolingscheme is important because newer, more powerful processors generate a significant amount ofheat, and heat needs to be controlled for the system to function properly.

The fans automatically adjust speeds in response to changing thermal requirements. When thetemperature inside the server increases, the fans speed up to maintain the proper ambienttemperature. When the temperature returns to a normal operating level, the fans return to theirdefault speed. Why not simply run the fans at 100% capacity all the time? For several goodreasons: to reduce the ambient noise, reduce the wear-and-tear on the fans and reduce theserver power draw. The reduction in ambient noise and power draw may be relatively minor for asingle server, but put dozens or hundreds in a data center and it makes a big difference!

Other FeaturesFour USB 2.0 ports — Flexibility to add high-speed external devices. The USB 2.0specification supports up to 480Mbps transfer rates. (Note: Not all USB 2.0 devices arecapable of achieving this rate.)

64-bit PCI Express Adapter SlotsPCI Express (PCI-E) slots are the next generation of high-performance I/O, offering far greaterthroughput than earlier PCI and PCI-X adapters.

The x100 provides four full-length/full-height adapter slots. Two slots support 64-bit PCI-Eadapters, one at x8 (“by 8”) speed (4GBps) and one at x1 (“by 1”) speed (500MBps). Two otherslots support standard 32-bit/33MHz PCI adapters. Because the Gigabit Ethernet and SATAcontrollers are integrated, all adapter slots are available. This offers customers a wide degree oflatitude in I/O expansion.

Extensive System Support FeaturesThe IBM services and technical support portfolio provides world-class, consistent, high-qualityservice and support. The x100 server offers a number of tools and services designed to makeownership a positive experience. From the start, IBM programs make it easier for customers toplan for, configure and purchase xSeries servers, get them running and keep them runninglong-term. These features include IBM Express Portfolio, IBM ServerProven®, the IBM ^xSeries and Netfinity Rack Configuration Tool, IBM ServerGuide, IBM Electronic Service Agent™,Product Customization Services and extensive technical support offerings.

All x100 configurations are exclusively Express models and are part of the IBM ExpressPortfolio, designed, developed and priced to meet the specific needs of small-to-midsizedbusinesses. The IBM Express Portfolio of solutions are easy to acquire, install and manage. Andthey leverage IBM technology to provide tangible solutions to help you solve business problemsin an on demand world.

The IBM ServerProven program provides the confidence that specific options and operatingsystems have been tested on the x100 and are officially supported to work together. It is updated

Advanced Systems Management CapabilitiesThe x100 has a high level of systems management capabilities, enabling remote or in-officemanagement of the server . Features include Automatic Server Restart, Wake on LAN® support,PXE support and optional IBM Director software.

Automatic Server Restart (ASR) helps reduce downtime by restarting the server automatically inthe event of a system lockup. ASR technology is a combination of hardware circuitry tied into theserver’s system reset function and a device driver. As long as the server continues running, theASR watchdog timer will keep being reset, but if the operating system crashes or the hardwarefreezes somehow the ASR software will be unable to reset the hardware timer. If the timer is notreset within five minutes, it automatically triggers the ASR hardware, which immediately restartsthe server. These features are designed so that no more than five minutes can pass before theserver is restarted.

Wake on LAN permits the x100 to be remotely powered on if it has been shut off. Once poweredup the server can be controlled across the network, using the Preboot Execution Environment(PXE).

Like Wake on LAN, PXE is system firmware. It allows software such as the optional IBM RemoteDeployment Manager to take control of a system before the BIOS, operating system orapplications are loaded (using Wake on LAN/PXE) and lets an administrator perform manylow-level tasks remotely that would otherwise require a visit to each system. These tasks mayinclude such things as formatting a hard disk drive, updating system firmware, or deploying aWindows or Linux operating system.

IBM Director 5.1x agent software is optionally available for the x100. The IBM Director agentpermits systems management control from another server running the IBM Director Serversoftware.

IBM Director enables the customer to customize thresholds and monitor system components (forthings like temperature, voltage regulation, etc.) to help maximize uptime.

IBM options for xSeries servers let customers take their servers to a higher levelMake sure that customers know they can rely on xSeries options to supply a complete solution fortheir business needs. Options help them create an optimized server system to meet their dataprotection, storage and availability needs. Every IBM option is designed and tested for peakperformance and flexibility, helping to maximize the customer’s return on investment. Thecombination of xSeries servers and options lets customers keep their fingers on the pulse of theire-business.

Memory — Memory is a significant factor in systems application performance. Adding more memoryto an xSeries server is one of the most effective ways to increase application performance. For bestperformance in a server with a dual-core processor, there should be twice as much memoryavailable as for a single-core processor. The x100 can take memory upgrades either singly or inpairs (either one, two or four DIMMs, total).

Hard Disk Drives — IBM hard disk drives help customers improve the transaction and costperformance of their xSeries servers. The choice of hard disk drives can be a critical aspect ofmaximizing the I/O throughput of the system. SATA hard disk drives are available with capacities upto 250GB at 7,200 RPMs.

ServeRAID Controllers — IBM ServeRAID technology allows an array consisting of multiplephysical hard disk drives to be treated as one logical drive. ServeRAID technology also allows datato be stored redundantly, across multiple hard disk drives— enhancing both the integrity and theavailability of the data. SATA ServeRAID controllers offer enhanced performance due to onboardprocessors and cache. Because IBM ServeRAID controllers can help significantly improve datatransfer rates, this technology is extremely effective when implementing demanding,transaction-oriented applications. By employing the advanced fault tolerance of IBM ServeRAIDtechnology, companies can effectively implement networked business systems that require largeamounts of storage space for data and applications that must be available for their businesses tocontinue operating.

The optional ServeRAID-7t SATA controller supports four RAID levels: 0, 1, 10 (1+0), and5-with-hot-spare. It also offers enhanced SATA performance via an onboard processor and cache.

Price/PerformanceA choice of a high-performance Pentium 4 processors with an 800MHz front side bus and1MB of integrated Level 2 cache or a Celeron processor with a 533MHz FSB and 1MB ofintegrated L2 cache means that there is an x100 model to fit all budgets. 64-bit extensionsprovide the flexibility to run today's 32-bit apps alongside tomorrow's 64-bit apps.

Fast 533MHz PC2-4200 DDR II ECC memory provides speed and high availability.

The integrated Gigabit Ethernet controller provides high-speed network communications, while the integrated SATA controller offers speedy data throughput and the integrated videochip provides high-performance graphics, all without using valuable adapter slots.

Selling Features

FlexibilityThe x100 has the ability to grow with a customer’s application requirements, thanks to:

- Up to 8GB of high-speed DDR2 error checking and correcting (ECC) system memory.

- Four available adapter slots that give your customers room to grow as their adapter needsincrease. Two 64-bit PCI-E (PCI Express) slots support current and future high-speedadapters, while two standard 32-bit PCI slots support legacy cards.

- The four USB 2.0 ports are up to 40X faster6 than older USB 1.1 ports. This providesspeedy access to external HDDs (non-arrayed), CD-RW drives, tape drives, and other USBdevices.

- Up to two internal fixed SATA drives offer a maximum of 500GB of internal storage, fortremendous growth potential. OS RAID offers the redundancy of a RAID-1 (mirrored disk)array, or the performance of a RAID-0 (striped data) array.

ManageabilityIBM Director 5.1x agent is optionally available for proactive systems management. It offersremote systems management from a server using IBM Director Server software.

Availability and ServiceabilityToolless cover removal provides easy access to upgrades and serviceable parts. This meansless time (and therefore less money) spent servicing the x100.

Temperature-controlled fans adjust to compensate for changing thermal characteristics. Atthe lower speeds they draw less power and suffer less wear. Equally important in a crowdeddata center, temperature- controlled fans produce less ambient noise in the data center than ifthey were constantly running at full speed.

Dell PowerEdge SC430

x100: Supports up to 8GB of 533MHz PC2-4200 DDR II ECC RAM. This can offer majorperformance advantages for some applications.

Dell PE SC430: Limited to only 4GB of memory.

x100: Includes a CD-ROM or CD-RW/DVD combo drive as standard equipment.Dell PE SC430: An optical drive is an extra-cost option.

The Bottom Line1. Sell performance and flexibility: 8GB of RAM offers better potential performance for

applications with large memory footprints; the Dell supports only 4GB.

x100 servers are designed to be functionally similar to and cost-competitive with the competition. Therefore there is little functional differentiation between the x100 and competitive offerings fromDell and HP.
