Symptom Unable to configure Tivoli Storage Manager server instance using Windows account other than administrator Cause Windows 2008 and Windows Vista require special User Account Control settings when using the configuration wizards. Environment Windows 2008 and Windows Vista Resolving the problem Resolving the error will require the User Account Control settings to be altered to turn off the password protected sharing option. This will allow Windows accounts other than Administrator to be used in the configuration of the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance. Windows 2008 1. Open Control Panel 2. Click on View Network status and tasks 3. On the left side, click Change Advanced sharing settings 4. Scroll down and under Password Protected sharing, select the radio button to Turn off password protected sharing 5. Click on Save Changing and close the Control Panel 6. Go to Start->Run and type in secpol.msc 7. Expand Local Policies and click on Security Options 8. Double-click on User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode and select disable. 9. Reboot the box. Note: in order to use a user other than administrator User Account Control must be disabled. If it is enabled, only the Administrator is the one allowed to perform administrator duties. This is true on Windows 2008 and Windows Vista. Note: if Windows is part of a domain, the Password Protected Sharing option will not be available. In this case, follow steps 6-9. Windows Vista 1. Click Control Panel-> Networking and Internet->Sharing and Discovery. 2. Click the down arrow that is next to Password protected sharing. 3. Click Turn off password protected sharing. 4. Click Apply and exit the control panel. Disable User Account Control if a different Administrator user account is to be used to connect to the Vista target. To disable UserAccount Control, open the Windows Control Panel and click Administrative Tools -> Local Security Policy -> Security Settings -> Local Policies -> Security Options. Then double-click on User Account Control: Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode and select disable. Changing this setting requires a system reboot. Retry the wizard server configuration. Note: The user account entered into the Wizard must already exist on the Windows box and the password must be correct or the same error will appear. Review the RXA trace and logs under the Tivoli Storage Manager directory for more information. Installing the server instance (dsmicfgx.exe) will fail with “unable to establish connection”.

Symptom

Unable to configure Tivoli Storage Manager server instance using Windows account other than administrator

Cause

Windows 2008 and Windows Vista require special User Account Control settings when using the configuration wizards.

Environment

Windows 2008 and Windows Vista

Resolving the problem

Resolving the error will require the User Account Control settings to be altered to turn off the password protected sharing option. Thiswill allow Windows accounts other than Administrator to be used in the configuration of the Tivoli Storage Manager server instance.

Windows 20081. Open Control Panel2. Click on View Network status and tasks3. On the left side, click Change Advanced sharing settings4. Scroll down and under Password Protected sharing, select the radio button to Turn off password protected sharing5. Click on Save Changing and close the Control Panel6.
